J119Y Shūsui (Nif. 秋 水 - "autumn water", used as a poetic metaphor meaning "cold steel" and thus a sword) is a Nifonese fighter program that entered service in 1984. The original aim of the project was to create a replacement for J107M. During wartime conditions of the Red Monsoon a competition was called for which three major companies - Tsukumo, Murakami and Yamakusa - presented their prototypes. Finally, Yamakusa's delta canard design triumphed over top engine proposal of Tsukumo, becoming J119Y.

Overview:

- J119Y follows a tailless delta configuration with two large canards mounted slightly above the wing. The role of the canards is purely pitch control, thus eliminating the major drawbacks of delta wings. This aircraft is unstable by design, using a fly by wire system for control.

- A combination of compound delta wing and canards allows Shusui to dominate the battle at low speeds, as well as sufficient acceleration for interception and penetration missions.

- A single, large vertical tail is included.

- The inlet is mounted below the nose, including an s-duct. The inlet features a splinter plate.

- Tricycle landing gear.

- The wing features flapperons and leading edge extensions.

- Majority of the airframe has been built from carbon composites, with exception of leading edge extensions and areas around engine's inlets and outlets, which were built from aluminum, glass composites covering tops of the vertical stabilizers, and Kevlar composite shielding the radar dome. Such choice of material serves to make Shusui both lighter and more durable.

- J119Y has been designed with simplicity in mind. Therefore this aircraft can be operated and serviced by conscripts.

- The cockpit features a joystick and a pair of throttlers in addition to an lcd multifunction display.

- Full radar cross section isn't at this point publicized, but according to a report delivered by Plamyrion air force "it is roughly 1/3 that of Mirage 2000". While not incorporating full stealth, RCS of J119Y is greatly reduced, which is dictated by several factors; small overall size of the fighter, high percentage of carbon composites included in the airframe (carbon composites do not reflect radar waves) and S shaped, fuselage buried engine inlets greatly contribute towards a semi - stealth capability, which may pose a serious obstacle to multiple enemies.

Propulsion:

- A single Kojima K-016 engine with 83kn dry, 128kn afterburner trust. Combination of a powerful engine with compound delta wing allows J119Y to start from runways and barely prepared airfields.

Electronics:

- The first possible option is a X band, multi channel pulse - doppler radar known as Ta-Ki 8. This radar system allows for target detection at range of 75km against 3m2 RCS while looking up, and 35 km for 3m2 while looking down. Surface naval targets can be detected from as far as 130 kilometers. Ta-Ki 8 features both BVR (beyond visual range) mode, WVR (within visual range) mode, ground surveillance mode and incorporates considerable EW resistance. All Nifonese, Riysan and Kommonder armaments are supported by this radar.

- Since subsequent modernisations, an option was included to include an AESA radar - Ta-Ki 19 is a X-band active electronically scanned array capable of tracking fighters at range of maximally 170 kilometers. Maximum amount of targets tracked at once numbers 15. Additional capabilities include support for ground search model, capable of mapping terrain at 300km and detecting large surface targets at 200km. Aside from the main array covering 120* Ta-Ki 19 features side panels further expanding the radar's spectrum. The entire system weights 70kg and covers 60x60cm area.

- Additional detection capability is provided by an optronic / infra - red search and track system developed by Aravean company Wehrner Electronics - S71. S71 directly integrates a high quality FLIR camera and optical camera, allowing for detection of airborne targets though infra-red at range of up to 100 km depending on the signature, surface targets up to 7 kilometers, and combined TV/IR sensor with laser rangefinder capable of operating up to 40km range. Pilot of "Ofnir" has to his disposal helmet - mounted targeting system with 20* FoV in the left eye. Each "Ofnir" is also equipped with a data link allowing for reliance of the information between multiple platforms. Other equipment include safe radio, AXISAT and satellite link. All avionics are fully integrated into a single system - a real "sensor fusion" that turns Da-17 into truly modular aircraft, allowing to install new components without any issues.

- Every pilot of an Shusui is equipped with To - Ga helmet mounted display, providing 20* FoV for the pilot's right eye and fully capable of displaying every data from the aircraft's own sensors, alongside electromagnetic position sensing technology employed. This system allows to target hostile aircraft simply by keeping them within the eyesight. All data streams have been integrated into To-Ga, allowing pilot to see multiple data in real time.

- All electronic support measures (ESM), radar warning receivers (RWR) and electronic warfare (EW) functions were connected to a single system called "Kozane-1" after first type of lamellar armor worn by the Nihonese samurai, aimed at increasing survival ability of the aircraft. "Kozane" family series is specifically optimized for aircraft it is placed on, due to open-end architecture allowing it to integrate various systems depending on requirements placed on it.

- Fujita Ku-Ne 13 radar warning receiver (RWR) is capable of detecting targets in spectrum between 0.7 to 40 GHz (in pulsed mode) or 2-18 GHz (continuous wave mode) which is more than capable of detecting majority of modern radars. This system is fully capable of wideband operations, as well as having high sensitivity & probability of intercept of signals. Detected radars can be classified using incorporated library.

- Washi 4-15 laser warning receiver was designed to counter emergent threat by laser - guided missiles (SACLOS). The system automatically detects laser beam and informs the pilot, including direction from which the beam is being emitted.

- Washi 5-11 missile approach warning system (MAWS) consists of 4 sensors and electronic control unit (ECU), using ultra violet signature emitted by the missile engine for detection of hostile missile attacks. Each unit has 110* field of view. The sensor is fully passive, and the false alarm rate has been proven to be low due to incorporation of advanced system of pattern recognition algorithms that operate on defined wavelengths. Once a hostile missile is detected, Washi 5-11 provides full range of information such as attitude, speed and positioning, allowing for better discernment of errors from true attacks.

- Another important countermeasure is "SML" countermeasures disperser, capable of dispersing chaff and IR countermeasures, housing over 160 packs of various kinds. Release occurs via non-pyrotechnic mechanism using electromagnetism to push the countermeasures weighting from 7 kg to 9 kg depending on type into the airstream. Fully integrated with internal avionics, two such packs were mounted at both wings. New generation of materials allowed to create an extremely effective countermeasure system which, when coupled with extreme maneuverability and jamming, allow to successfully evade attack by newest missiles.

- Washi W-21 are pair of wing-tip pods especially designed to provide self defense electronic warfare capability by using digital radio frequency memory (DFRM) jamming. "W-21" is capable of jamming targets between 6 GHz to 18 GHz spectrum, +/- 90 degree in azimuth and +/- 60 degree in altitude around the aircraft with power of 50 Watt per module.

- Fujita Type F-12 is a towed decoy designed to, rather than than traditional decoys, work directly integrated with aircraft's own EW systems. Towed on a fiber optic cable of length up to 100 meters, F-12 has a conversion device that converts the data into light to be transported and analyzed by main EW unit inboard the fighter. F-12 can work in variety of modes including deception, suppression and seduction of enemy missiles.

During the ground attack missions targeting capability is provided by pylon mounted "Horo" targeting pod which incorporates it's own FLIR, HDTV, laser spot tracker, laser marker, video data link, and a digital data recorder, capable of guiding bombs even through smoke and clouds and with low - light / no - light conditions.

Armaments:

- 10 hardpoints, 6 under wing, 4 under the fuselage.

- Aside from rockets this plane can count on a single Ryu-92 gattling gun. Ryu-92 is a six barrelled rifled gattling gun shooting 23x115 rounds. Being one of cannons possessing the highest rate of fire in the world, Ryu-92 is gas-operated (requiring no external power source to operate, reloading itself by recoil of the floating barrels) and fed by linkless feed system, with electrical fire control (this new computer-managed system allows the pilot to manage the size of the salvos) and 10 pyrotechnic cocking charges. While it can not match the sustained rate of fire of electric-powered gattling guns, the initial rate of fire of Ryu-92 is far higher. The gun is capable of shooting up to almost 8 500 rounds per minute, which permits it to rip to shreds any target unlucky enough to find itself within it's range. 500 rounds of ammunition are carried, allowing this aircraft to expend it's ammunition in less than 2 seconds, turning whatever the target into a Swiss cheese.
