WHO ARE WE ?



Varhaug Armament Conversions (VAC), or Varhaug Conversions, was founded in December 2020 as a subsidiary of the Northeast Interstate Kombinat, a state-owned conglomerate initiated by the Sovjetunionen of Nanban-Ha, the People's Democratic Republic of Nihon-Ha and the Secular Heterotopya Of Massayiana.
The company aims to be a melting pot of experiences in terms of converting obsolete military equipment that these three nations have accumulated over the last fifty years, notably Nanban-Ha following the Havonyan Liberation War (1960-1972), the War of the Borders (1979-1989) and the Winter War (1985-1989) with the Imperskaya Federativnaya Respublika of Chorussia. During these three almost consecutive conflicts, large quantities or military equipment were captured and often stored without too much consideration. The justification put forward at the time were mainly financial and logistic. The Soviet Union could not simultaneously provide its military forces with modern equipment and ensure the conversion of obsolete or foreign equipment. However, the necessities of war forcing compromises, this equipment could be very useful in the future, to equip the Hemvarnet (Home Guards) units or reserve contingents in the event of an invasion or at least a military defeat of strategic dimension.
The type of service offered by VAC is certainly not its prerogative. Every country is confronted to the problematic of the conversion of its obsolete military equipment in new, modernized platforms able to meet its evolving needs in terms of defense policy. But each country is limited by its own technological advances, by its ability to mobilize its scientific research around its defense needs, as well as its industrial, human and financial resources. For many states, buying new is often the one and only solution to replace equipment that certain technological advances, like drones or new anti-vehicles systems, have made too expensive, both in financial and manpower terms, to mobilize in a military conflict.

VAC aims to meet three different types of needs which can relay to very large array of national defense strategy.

In addition to the conversion of obsolete military equipment, VAC also intends to provide its customers with the logistic chain, especially in term of spare parts, necessary to maintain the readiness of every peace of equipment sold by the company. The objective is above all to offer an after-sales service to its customers but also to conquer potential clients among nations which are not engaged in armed conflicts but have significant quantities of military equipment which they must keep in high level of readiness despite lack of budget or plan to replace them.

Unlike many companies in the defense industry, VAC does not actually sell new equipment. By simplifying to the extreme, it is engaged in the purchase, conversion and resale of obsolete military equipment. It is not an exchange program nor a charity. In other words, it is not because a seller allows us to acquire a quantity of material that this material once converted is immediately returned to him. With the exception of contractual conditions with a client, nothing would force us to resell the vehicles acquired by VAC to their original sellers. Once converted, this equipment becomes the property of VAC, which can choose to sell it to one or more customers of its choice.
Equipment sold to VAC cannot be bought back at the same price once it has been stored. This may seem logical to many but is worth remembering. The set of modifications made to these equipments often explains the price difference between the purchase price and the resale price. However, the purchase of modernized equipment from a stock of obsolete equipment that was sold earlier represents a clear advantage both in terms of cost and logistics. Most of the conversion effort is made by VAC and the product often represents a significant improvement at a reduced cost.

For example, a T-72 costs between $ 1,000,000 (earlier variants) and $ 2,000,000 (T-72B1). At VAC, we offer to buy complete or incomplete T-72 for $ 400,000. Based on our production cost, a T-72 converted to an M7117 Armored Personal Carrier "Black Bear" cost between $ 1,700,000 and $ 2,400,000 per unit. Selling a T-72 and then buying its converted version amounts to obtaining a reduction of almost 25% on the usual market price and a modernized APC according to the latest technological advances for a cost between $ 1,300,000 and $ 2,000,000.
Not all VAC products and conversion programs systematically follow this type of ratio. The Protector program is notably more expensive because of its ambitions to offer a Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle from a platform as obsolete as the Cadillac Gage Commando vehicle series.

VAC offers application forms which you will find here. These forms are intended to facilitate interactions with our customers, however, they are not the only communication tool with VAC which welcomes any proposal in any form, as long as it takes the form of a clear and concise request. In other words, it is not necessary to fill out a form to do business with BCA. But if you choose to not do so, make sure that most of the information is easily understood by everyone involved.

DISCOUNTS

Discounts can be accumulated but cannot exceed 75% of the original value of an order.

  • Members and Observers of the International Socialist Congress, Contributors to the International Socialist Volunteers Corps: Nanban-Ha is a full member of the ISC, a contributor to its International Socialist Volunteer Corps. All nations that are members of the ISC are eligible for discounts, depending on their status within this international structure. Observers and full members can obtain a discount of 10 and 25% respectively, symbolizing their difference in status within the Congress. Members or observers who contribute significantly to the ISC (for RP especially) can get a discount ranging from 50% to 75% on the entire catalog, unless otherwise stated. As Varhaug Conversion Armaments is under the direct control of the Sovjetunionen of Nanban-Ha, the status of each nation will be monitored in close contact with the Congress. BLACK LIST

Any nation that is an ally, contribute to the Unified Command of Christian and Patriot Militias or the Death Corps, participate or support in any shape or form the effort of the Tetrarchy to destroy us are also affected by this decision and will be added to this list. Any nation that intend to play a role of third party by reselling to the Tetrarchy or its allies our products will also be added to the list.
  • Federal Republic of Countesia: For threats expressed against the Soviet Union and adopting a petty-bourgeois and counter-revolutionary attitude aimed at assimilating us and our allies to the fascist and genocidal tyrants of the Tetrarchy of Arkanyia.

PURCHASE PRODUCTS PRICE LIST



The price list below is for the generic prices that BCA is willing to pay for the purchase of platforms and equipment that our company can modernize or convert.

This list is far from being exhaustive. We invite our customers to suggest other equipment that might be of interest to our engineering teams.

When no price is indicated, our customer can propose their own.



Soviet type of equipment

  • Zil 135: An 8 x 8 heavy truck with fair cross-country performance, the Zil 135 is the carrier for the BM-27 rocket launcher system. Price: $25,000
  • Ural 375: A 6 x 6 truck with good cross-country performance, the Ural 375 is the carrier for the BM-21 rocket launcher system. Price: $20,000
  • UAZ 469: Eastern bloc equivalent of the jeep or 1/4-ton truck, the UAZ-469 is a light wheeled utility vehicle. It has a weapons mount on a post behind the front seat. Price: $8,000
  • PTS-M: An unarmored, tracked, amphibious carrier, the PTSM has a fully enclosed cab located at the extreme front of the vehicle. The cargo/passenger area is open-topped, and there is a rear ramp that drops down for loading cargo. Price: $35,000
US/Lusatinian type of equipment

  • HMMWV Squad Carrier: The above letters stand for High-mobility, Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. The HMMWV is a four-wheel-drive, offroad vehicle designed as a light scout, utility and cargo vehicle. It has replaced the jeep in service. It has a weapons mount above the commander seat.Price: $20,000.
  • HMMWV Ambulance: An HMMWV variant for transport of wounded. Price: $20,000.
  • HMMWV TOW Carrier: The standard Hummer fitted with a TOW launch system. Price: $20,000.
  • HMMWV Fire Support Vehicle: The standard Hummer fitted with a 25mm chaingun turret. The weapon is fired by means of a down linked television monitor connected to a console in the gunner's position (right front passenger compartment). Price: $30,000.
  • M880 Truck, cargo, 5/4-ton: The M880 series (M880-M885) and other medium-sized utility trucks are in common use. A pintle mount weapon is sometimes added to the cargo bed as a field modification. Price: $15,000.
  • FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle): The FAV was developed in the 1980s as a scout and general tactical vehicle for the fast attack battalions of US army light divisions. The FAV resembles a dune buggy in configuration, and is fitted with an NHT weapons mount. It is usually armed with a machinegun (M2HB, MAG, or M60 MGs), a TOW launcher, or a Mark 19 GL. The vehicle is also provided with kevlar side and top armor sheets, attached to the roll bar framework. These sheets, intended to provide protection from shell fragments and small arms fire, were usually rolled up to avoid interference with crew visibility and to facilitate the crew's rapid departure from the vehicle in stress situations. Price: $15,000.
  • M648 10-ton Cargo Carrier: An unarmored cargo carrier on the same chassis as the M993 MLRS. Access to the forward located crew compartment is through two doors (one on each side) and a hatch located on the right top of the compartment. A tailgate in the rear facilitates loading/unloading of the opentopped cargo bed. Price: $250,000.
  • M548 6-ton Cargo Carrier: A cargo carrier variant of the workhorse M113 series chassis. It is nearly identical in layout to the M648 mentioned above, but smaller. Price: $50,000.
NATO allies type of equipment

  • LWB Land Rover (Unarmored Cargo Vehicle): The British-built, 4x4 Long Wheelbase Land Rover is one of the most commonly seen vehicles in the Third World. Rovers are in service with many armies, police forces, and paramilitary forces throughout the world, as well as in civilian use. Civilian versions are sometimes converted to military use by a field-expedient weapon mount, added armor (sheet metal or sandbags in improvised frames) and (sometimes) a coat of paint. The vehicle is not NBC sealed. Price: $18,000.

Soviet type of equipment

  • T-55: A Soviet-built tracked main battle tank. There is a driver's hatch on the left front deck, and a commander's hatch and a loader's hatch on the turret deck. The gunner uses the commander's hatch. A weapons mount is located near the commander's hatch. Price: $200,000
  • T-62: The T-62 is a tracked main battle tank. The driver has a hatch on the front deck, and the commander and the loader have hatches on the turret. There is a weapons mount by the commander's hatch. Price: $300,000
  • T-64: A tracked main battle tank. The T-64 has a driver's hatch in the center of the front deck, and commander's and gunner's hatch on the turret deck. A weapons mount is located near the commander's hatch. Price: $350,000
  • T-80: Basically a T-64 incorporating better armor (notably in the turret and glacis area) and an improved power plant. The characteristics are the same as the T-64. Price: $400,000
  • T-72: A tracked main battle tank of Soviet manufacture. There is a driver´s hatch on the middle front deck, and a gunner´s hatch and commander# s hatch on the turret deck. The gun is automatically reloaded. A weapons mount is located by the commander' s hatch. Price: $400,000
  • T-74: Basically a T-72 with improvements in the armor; the layout and characteristics are the same. Price: $400,000
  • T-86: A tracked main battle tank, the T-86 has a chassis similar to that of the T-72. The turret is more angular, making it possible for the T-86 to incorporate composite armor. The hatch layout on the T-86 is the same as the T-72. Price: $500,000
  • T-90: Unveiled in 1993, the T-90 marks a return to diesel power following the gas turbine T-80. As an improved T-80, the T-90 also has the same layout as the T-72. The T-90 also fires an ATGM from its 125mm gun, the 9M119 Reflecks (known by NATO as the AT-11 "Sniper"). Price: $600,000
  • M-81: A Romanian-built tracked main battle tank. The chassis is similar to the T-55; however, the turret is larger, allowing room for the German-made 120mm gun. The gun is manually loaded. The M-81 is equipped with side skirts and has a driver's hatch on the front deck. The turret deck has two hatches, one for the commander and one for the gunner. The commander's hatch has a weapons mount. Price: $350,000
  • Type 62: Type 62(Light Combat Vehicle):A Chinese-built tracked light tank, a development of the Soviet PT-76 light recon tank. The Type 62 is of conventional layout and is armed with an 85mm gun and coaxial PK MG. An additional MG can be fitted to the commander's hatch in a cupola mount. Price:$950,000.
US/Lusatinian type of equipment

  • M60A4: Developed in the 1950's as an outgrowth of the M48 series of AFVs, the M60 series (the M60, M60A1, M60A2, and M60A3) was the mainstay of US armored forces from its adoption in 1 962 until it began to be replaced by the M1 Abrams family in the 1980's. In 1 987 the M60A4 was adopted as type standard for all remaining M60 models in inventory, and work began on bringing the earlier models up to A4 standards. Side skirts for the tracks and "Blazer" reactive armor for the turret are the primary features distinguishing the M60A4 from earlier versions. There is a single driver's hatch on the forward deck. The turret mounts a commander's cupola containing an M2HB MG and a loader's hatch, both on the turret deck (the cupola is fitted with a hatch as well). Price: $400,000.
  • Cadillac Gage Stingray: The Stingray was a private venture tank developed by Cadillac Gage in the US and Royal Ordnance of England, designed for the export weapons market. Although never adopted by the US Army, the Stingray was a less expensive AFV alternative in many armies in the years prior to the war. In 1997, conditions in the US were such that Stingray inventories and production were requisitioned and the vehicles assigned as replacement equipment to several units in the US and abroad. The Stingray's layout is conventional: there is a driver's hatch on the forward hull deck, and a commander's hatch on the turret deck with a weapons mount. The 105mm turret on the Stingray can also be fitted into the various other CG Commando chassis (M706, M750), and a small number of such "Stingray Juniors" were produced. Price: $800,000.



Soviet type of equipment

  • SU-152: A tracked, self-propelled howitzer. It has a driver's hatch on the front left deck, a commander hatch on the turret deck, and a loader's hatch on the right turret side. A weapons mount is located by the commander's hatch. Price: $250,000
  • SU-122: An amphibious tracked, self-propelled howitzer. It has a driver's hatch on the front left deck, a commander hatch and a loader's hatch on the turret deck. Price: $200,000
  • SU-203: A tracked, self-propelled gun, the SAU-203 has a fully enclosed armored cab for the crew. The gun is mounted at the rear of the vehicle and is not protected; it has a powerassisted loader. The crew gains access through two hatches on the front deck. Price: $400,000
  • SU-130: The SU-130 is a tracked, turret less assault gun built on the chassis of the T-62A tank.   • M691 Diana: The M691 Diana is one of a number of air defense systems adopted by the US army after the cancellation of M988 DIVAD system production in the mid-1 980's. The Diana mounts a fully rotating turret with twin 25mm Oerlikon autocannons on an M1 Abrams tank chassis. Price: $700,000.
  • M17 LAVAA: An antiarmor variant of the LAV-25, achieved by replacing the 25mm chaingun turret with a TOW launch system. The launcher can be extended upwards, to permit the M60 AVLB and 17m bridge weapon to be aimed and fired while the vehicle is hull down, for improved survivability. It is otherwise externally identical to the LAV-25. Price: $ 100,000.
  • M901 ITV: Yet another variant of the M113 chassis, the ITV (improved TOW Vehicle was designed to replace earlier TOW carriers (hence the name). The TOW launcher replaces the commander's hatch, and automatic reloading machinery largely fills the rear crew compartment. Otherwise the vehicle is as the M1113 in the equipment list.   • LAV-PIVAD: Another LAV-25 variant, fitted with a PIVAD (Product Improved Vulcan Air Defense) system. The LAV-PIVAD was designed to provide a light-weight, mobile air defense weapon for use in army light divisions. Aside from the weapon, it is nearly identical to the LAV-25. Price: $100,000.
  • M990 ADA: A LAV-75 chassis fitted with a twin 30mm Bofors anti-aircraft turret, incorporating an improved DIVAD fire control and target acquisition system. It is otherwise identical to the LAV-75 in the equipment list. Price: $250,000.
  • M741A6 PIVAD: Another antiaircraft weapon, an M113 fitted with a PIVAD system. Aside from the weapon, which replaces the commander's hatch, it is nearly identical to the M113 APC in the equipment list. Price: $75,000.
  • M109A2 SP: A tracked, self-propelled howitzer with a large turret on the rear vehicle deck. There is a driver's hatch on the left front deck, a commander's hatch and gunner's hatch on the turret deck, and hinged doors on both siders of the turret, the rear of the turret, and the rear of the hull. A weapons mount is located by the commander's hatch. The M109 can be made amphibious by use of a special kit not normally carried. The kit consists of nine large air bags. Price: $300,000.
  • M110A2 SP: A self-propelled artillery system on a heavy chassis developed for the army by the Pacific Car and Foundry Company. The gun system is mounted externally on the chassis, and (unlike the M109) there is no protection for the gun crew (except for the driver, who rides inside) or for the ammunition. To remedy this (at least for the crew), a kit consisting of a tubular metal framework and kevlar shields was issued, but most crews found them too cumbersome to erect. They were usually discarded or left with the supply units. Price: $375,000.
  • M993 MLRS: The M993 was the first multiple rocket launcher System deployed in significant numbers by the US army since WWII. The vehicle uses a chassis developed by FMC and a large, boxlike rack of twelve launching tubes (which can be rotated 360°), behind a forward-mounted crew compartment. The tubes can be discharged in pairs, or ripple-fired. Access to the forward located crew compartment is through two doors (one on each side) and a hatch located on the right top of the compartment. The weapon can be reloaded by one person, using an integral derrick to hoist the ammo pods (6 rockets each) onto the vehicle. Price: $250,000.
  • M948 LARS: Built on the M548 cargo carrier chassis, and using 160mm rockets instead of 227mm ones, the M948 Light Artillery Rocket System is smaller than the M993 MLRS, but identical in layout. Price: $225,000.
  • M917 ADATS (Air Defense Antitank System): A quadruple ADATS missile launching system fitted to the LAV-75 chassis. This vehicle is an attempt to combine antiarmor and antiaircraft capabilities in a single vehicle. Price: $225,000.
  • M920 M2 Hellfire AT Vehicle: The M2 Bradley chassis with the turret removed and a quadruple Hellfire antiarmor missile launcher fitted into its place. Price: $200,000.
  • M757 Blazer: The Blazer is the basic M2 Bradley chassis fitted out for an antiaircraft role with a triple barreled 30mm chaingun system and a quadruple stinger launcher. Price: $200,000.
  • MPGS-90: A LAV-25 chassis mounting a reduced pressure 90mm gun similar to the British 90mm Cockerill. Price: $250,000.
  • M48 Chaparral: The M48 Chaparral air defense artillery vehicle consists of a modified M548 chassis (designated M730) and an M54 missile launch system. Price: $150,000.
  • M975A3 Roland II: The Franco-German Roland antiaircraft missile system was manufactured in America under license, beginning in the 80's. The US version consisted of the Roland turret (incorporating the target aquisition and tracking electronics) fitted to a modified M109 chassis. The twin launcher is reloaded from an autoloader in the rear of the vehicle's hull. Price: $300,000

  • BTR-70: An eight-wheeled, amphibious, armored personnel carrier. The BTR-70 has a side door and roof hatch for both the driver and commander, and a hatch in the deck of the turret gunner. There are large overhead hatches for the passengers on the vehicle deck and a hatch on each side in the middle of the vehicle. Three firing ports are located on each side of the vehicle.   • BTR-80: Very similar in layout to the BTR-70, the BTR-80 has a different power plant and the firing ports are obliquely angled to provide better forward fire capabilities. The BTR-80 also has small doors near the center of the hull for passenger egress. Price: $85,000
    BMP-1: The first in the long line of Soviet BMP designs, the BMP-A has a driver's hatch and a commander's hatch on the front deck, and a gunner's hatch on top of the turret. The passenger area is accessible by two hatches on the rear deck and rear doors. There are four firing ports on either side of the passenger compartment. Price: $140,000
  • BMP-2: THe BMP-2 is one of the former standard Eastern block tracked amphibious, armored personnel carriers. Main access to the vehicle interior is by a drop ramp in the vehicle rear. There is a driver's hatch on the left front deck, a commander's hatch behind it, a gunner's hatch on top of the turret, and two long oval-shaped hatches on the rear deck for the passengers. Three rifle firing ports and one machinegun firing port are located on each side of the vehicle. The machinegun firing port can be use by any type of battle rifle, assault rifle or PK machinegun.   • BMP-3: Another tracked, amphibious armored personnel carrier, the BMP-3 is a completely new design.   • BMD-B: The BMD-B is a tracked, amphibious, infantry combat vehicle developed for the airborne forces.   • MTLB: The MTLB is a tracked, amphibious, multi-purpose vehicle that serves mainly as a prime mover for Soviet AT guns and howitzers. More recently, the multi-purpose vehicle has served as a platform for SAM missiles. The MTLB has a hatch on the left front deck for the driver and a hatch for the commander on the center deck. There are also two hatches on the rear deck and two rear doors for passenger usage. A firing port is in each rear door and on each side of the passenger compartment. Price: $60,000

  • M2A3 Bradley II: An improved version of the Bradley APC. The main external differences are the smaller turret and the replacement of the TOW AT missiles with the superior Hellfire system. Price: $200,000. ($150,000 for earlier variants)
  • M3 Devers: An armored cavalry variant of the M2 Bradley. Externally, the vehicles are identical; internally, the M3 carries fewer passengers and more missiles. Price: $200,000.
  • M113A3: A slightly modernized M113, with the addition of an armored cupola for the commander's hatch machinegun and paired gunshields for the cargo hatch weapons. Price: $75,000.
  • M113A3 ACCV: A tracked, amphibious, armored personnel carrier. There is a hatch on the left front deck for the driver, a hatch in the center of the deck for the commander - which has a weapons mount - a large, rear drop ramp for access to the vehicle interior, and a large rectangular hatch on the rear deck. There are two other weapons mounts: one on either side of the large rear deck hatch. These are used by passengers standing up in the open large hatch. Price: $75,000.
  • M115A1 ACCV: An improved version of the M113 ACCV, armed with a 25mm chaingun turret, eliminating the cargo deck weapons mounts. It is otherwise identical to the M113 from the equipment list. Price: $75,000.
  • AAVP9: The AAVP9 is an advanced version of the AAVP7A1 amphibious armored personnel carrier, entering service in the early 1990's. A 40mm AGL and M2HB MG combination is mounted in a small cupola on the right front hull deck, and there are two smaller hatches for the driver and vehicle commander on the left front hull deck. The rear deck contains two large doors for disembarking personnel, and the rear has a ramp/door which can be lowered as well. The vehicle is fully amphibious. The 40mm AGL is identical in performance and characteristics to the Mark 19. Price: $80,000.
  • Commando V-300 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier): The APC version is normally fitted with a pintle-mounted MAG or M2HB MG, a light power turret incorporating twin machineguns (either MAG or an M2HB/MAG combo) or a 25mm autocannon (same as on the M2 Bradley series). Other armaments include a 40mm GL turret (same as that on the AAVP7A), an air defense version with a turret-mounted 20mm autocannon, and an open topped 82mm mortar version. The V-300 APC is fully amphibious at one-quarter its cross-country speed. Price: $350,000.

  • HWK II (Armored Personnel Carrier): A German-built, tracked APC intended for service with the preunification Bundeswehr. The HWK II was never adopted for German service, but has had extensive sales in foreign countries, primarily in Latin America. It has a hatch on the front deck for the driver, a commander's hatch with a pintle mount (NHT equivalent), two large passenger hatches on the rear deck and a hinged ramp at the back. The vehicle is not NBC sealed. Price: $75,000.
  • Panhard M3 (Armored Personnel Carrier): Manufactured in large numbers for the export market, the Panhard M3 is a 4x4 APC also found in service with French military police and internal security units. The M3 has no turret, just a cupola-mounted MAG MG (the gunshield is 360° and has an AV of 2), a passenger door in each side, three firing ports per side, and a hinged ramp in back for troop access.   • Panhard VCR (Armored Personnel Carrier): The Panhard VCR (Véhicule de Combat a Roues or wheeled combat vehicle) is a private venture, 4x4 APC developed by the Panhard company for the export market. Other variants on the basic hull exist, including a mortar carrier, a Milan ATGM carrier, and a light support vehicle mounting a 20mm autocannon in an open (unturreted) mount. Data below are fortheAPC version, which is most common. Export versions are not NBC sealed. The vehicle is fully amphibious at one fourth its cross-country speed. Price:$75,000.
  • RAM V-1 (Armored Personnel Carrier): It is the custom of the Israeli armaments industries to amortize their development costs by selling their low-tech products on the open market to everyone but theirdirect enemies.The RAM V-1 is a 4x4 light recon vehicle. The vehicle is open-topped and has no access hatches, but the driver and commander have small firing ports (one on each side). The RAM V-1 is armed with three pintle-mounted MAG MGs, one firing forward and one to each side. All of these weapons are readily dismountable. The passengers dismount to form a recon team.
    Some vehicles mount a single TOW ATGM launcher on a central pintle mount at the cost of the side machineguns (four missiles are carried in place of two of the passengers; the other two form the weapon crew). Price: $45,000
  • RBY Mk1 (Armored Personnel Carrier): The RBY Mk1 is a 4x4 light recon vehicle, a slightly larger version of the RAM V-1. The vehicle has two large doors on the top deck through which the crew enter and exit the vehicle. The driver and commander have small firing ports (one on each side). The vehicle is armed with four pintle-mounted MAG MGs-one firing forward, one to each side, and one to the rear. All of these weapons are readily dismountable; indeed, they must be dismounted to close the top doors. Price: $45,000.
  • EE-11 Urutu (Armored Personnel Carrier): Sharing many basic automotive components with the EE-9, the EE-11 Urutu is a Brazilian 6x6 wheeled APC designed for both domestic service and the export market. The vehicle has a driver's hatch on the front deck, a ring mount (NHT equivalent) at the commander's hatch in the center deck, and a hatch in the rear deck forcrew access. Some versions are armed with a 60mm mortar, and a few are fitted with the same 90mm turret as the EE-9. The EE-11 is fully amphibious at one-quarter its cross-country speed. Price: $180,000.
  • OTO-Melara 6614 (Armored Personnel Carrier): The OTO-Melara 6614 is an Italian-built, 4x4 APC used by the Italian Army and sold to foreign armies as well. It has a driver's hatch on the front deck, a cupola-mounted MG on the center deck, a door on each side, and a ramp in the rear for departure of passengers. One of the passengers serves as gunner.   • SO-120: A tracked, amphibious airborne assault vehicle, the SO-120 is based on the BMD-2 chassis and has a turret-mounted 120mm gun/mortar (2S9). There are hatches for the commander and gunner on the turret deck, and two hatches on the front deck for the other two crew members. Price: $120,000
  • BRDM-2: A four-wheel armored scout car that has the retractable wheels like the BRDM-3, the BRDM-2 comes in several variants. The most common are a Spandrell (AT-5) launch platform and a turreted vehicle. There is a hatch for the driver and the commander on the front deck of all versions, and a hatch for the gunner on the turret deck for the turreted version. Price: $45,000
  • BRDM-3: Similar to the previous versions, except the vehicle sometimes has a 23mm autocannon in place of the 30mm autocannon. Price: $50,000
  • OT-65: An independent development by the Hungarian Army, the OT-65 is an amphibious, four-wheeled,a armored scout car. It is often used in place of the BRDM. It has a side door on each side of the car and a hatch on the turret deck for the gunner. Price: $45,000
  • BT-76: A tracked, amphibious light tank designed to give mobile fire support to airborne and air assault units. The BT-76 replaced the PT-76 and the ASU-85 and was itself being replaced by the SO-120 when the war started. There is a driver's hatch in the center of the front deck, and hatches for the commander and gunner on the turret deck. A weapons mount is by the commander's hatch. Price: $70,000
  • BT-57: A variant of the BT-76 armed with a 57mm autocannon. Characteristics are the same. Price: $75,000
    BMD Weapons Carrier: The BMD is the same vehicle as the BMD-B but with the turret removed. Two AGS-17 grenade launchers are on either side of the space where the turret used to be, and two PK machinegun mounts have been fitted, one on the bow firing forward and another on the rear deck firing to the rear. The driver's hatch is still on the front deck, and the place where the turret was is now open-topped. Price: $110,000
  • BMP Automortar: A turretless BMP with an 82mm Vasilyek mounted in the chassis in place of the turret. Characteristics are the same except for reduced passenger capabilities. Price: $160,000
  • BMP-120: Another variant of the BMP, this one mounting the 2S9 120mm gun/mortar turret. Intended for close artillery support, this vehicle does not carry passengers. Instead, the rear area is for stowage of ammunition. Price: $185,000
  • TAB-90: A tracked, infantry combat vehicle designed and built in Romania, the TAB-90 has a turrent-mounted 23mm autocannon. There is a driver's hatch on the front deck, and a hatch for the commander and the gunner on the top of the turret. A large hatch on the rear deck allows passenger entry.   • M750 AC (Commando V-350): Unlike the other Cadillac Gage armored vehicles, the V-350 was type-standardized by the US Army, entering service in the mid 1990's. The M750 is a larger version of CG's V-series of armored cars (beginning with the Vietnam-era M706 Commando V-100). Several versions were built by CG, but the AC variant (also used by MP and airfield security units) was the only one ever officially adopted. A six-wheeled armored car (that is, 6 x 6, unlike the previous 4x4 versions of the Vseries), the M750 has a driver's and a commander's hatch on the front deck, a gunner's hatch on the turret, and another hatch on the rear deck, fitted with a pintle weapons mount. A two-part hatch is located on the rear. Price: $50,000
  • Peacekeeper Armored Car: A Cadillac Gage 4 x 4 light armored car, acquired by the USAF in 1985 for airfield security duties and by the Department of Energy for perimeter security at certain nuclear reactor facilities. It contains two conventional automobile-type doors (one right, one left) for the driver and front passenger, plus two cargo doors in the rear. On the top center of the cargo/passenger compartment there is a 360° gunshield/ mount for the vehicle's normal armament of twin MAG MGs. A searchlight is usually fitted to this gunshield on perimeter security models. Price: $35,000.
  • M577A1 CP: The command post variant of the M113 APC. The main modifications are the expansion of the passenger compartment to permit its occupants to stand and the installation of an air-conditioner (to protect fragile electronic equipment from over-heating, not for crew comfort). The commanders hatch is shifted forward on the deck, and the cargo door on the deck is eliminated This vehicle also contains an integral 7.5 kw generator and a large tent which can be erected at the rear of the vehicle to expand the area available in the command center. Price: $90,000.
  • M18 Mortar Carrier: The M18 is the mortar variant of the Bradley AFV. The turret has been removed (a hatch and MG mount take its place), and the interior heavily modified to take the M121 120mm mortar and its associated equipment. Price: $200,000.
  • M106 Mortar Carrier: An M113, heavily modified to carry the M30 107mm (4.2") mortar. Most of the vehicle's main deck has been removed, but the commander's MG mount remains intact. Price: $75,000.
  • M728 CEV: The M728 CEV (combat engineer vehicle) is a variant of the M60 tank. The vehicle's main gun has been replaced with a 1 65mm demolition gun, and a crane has been installed on the turret (which also lacks reactive armor plates and the studs to hold them). Aside from these differences, and the lack of side skirts, its characteristics are identical to the M60A4. Price: 600,000.
  • Commando Scout (Light Combat Vehicle): The American firm of Cadillac Gage manufactures a number of vehicles for export, some of which have been picked up for US service. The 4x4 Commando Scout is not one of the latter, but is in service with a number of military and constabulary units throughout the world. The vehicle has a driver's hatch on the front deck, a commander's hatch on the turret deck, and an exit hatch on the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle's extremely low weight makes it easily air-transportable, and the Commando Scout is very popular with mere groups requiring a light AFV. The vehicle can be armed with a machinegun or a 20mm autocannon. In some models, a single remotely fired TOW II ATGM launcher is also mounted on the turret, or a 40mm autogrenade launcher such as the Mk19 may be fitted in place of the main armament.   • Commando V-150 (Light Combat Vehicle): Produced by Cadillac Gage, the V-150 series of 4x4 wheeled APCs (adopted for service in the US Army) comes in several versions, the most common being an APC version, either with a machine gun turret as shown or with a pintle-mounted MAG MG. The 150 series is also available in mortar carrier (turret is removed and replaced with deck hatches), 20mm autocannon, and 90mm gun versions (using the lowpressure gun turret from the V-300).   • Commando V-300 TUA (Light Combat Vehicle): The V-300 series is a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle manufactured by Cadillac Gage, but was not adopted by the US Army. The antitank TUA (TOW under armor) version is one of two TOW versions; the other has a single TOW launcher on a nonturreted pintle mount. The V-300 isfully amphibious at one-quarter its cross-country speed. The vehicle has two side doors and a rear exit ramp, plus a commander's hatch in the middle of the top deck fitted.   • Commando V-300 CS (Light Combat Vehicle): The V-300 series is a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle manufactured by Cadillac Gage, but it was not adopted by the US Army.   • Ferret (Light Armored Vehicle): The Ferret is an obsolete, British-built, 4x4 armored car, now in service with non-British armies and paramilitary police forces worldwide. It was produced in several variants, and most are now armed with MAG MGs in a turret mount. The vehicle has a single hatch on the turret top serving both driver and commander/gunner. A few models have been fitted with ATGM launchers. The vehicle is fully amphibious (once a flotation screen has been erected) at one-quarter its cross-country speed. Pnce: $95,000.
    M20 (Light Combat Vehicle): The M20 is an unturreted version of the WWII M8 Greyhound 6x6 reconnaissance vehicle, still used by a number of foreign countries. Its armor is inferior compared to other vehicles, but it is cheap and mechanically reliable. The vehicle is not NBC sealed. Price: $125,000.
  • M24 Chaffee (Light Combat Vehicle): An American-built, WWII-era, light AFV, now out of service in the US Army but still serving with many smaller armies. The M24 is of conventional layout. The vehicle is not NBC sealed. Price: $350,000.
  • M41 (Light Combat Vehicle): The M41 replaced the M24 Chaffee in US service in the 1950s but was itself rendered obsolete by other vehicles. It is still found in service with other countries, however. The M41 is of conventional layout for an AFV and is not NBC sealed. Some models have had their gasoline engines replaced with more economical diesel ones. Price: $500,000.
  • Panhard AML(Light Combat Vehicle): Manufactured by the French firm of Panhard, the 4x4 Panhard AML comes in two types: the AML-90 armed with a French 90mm gun (the version illustrated), and the AML-60/20 with a 20mm autocannon and 60mm gun/mortar. Both versions have a door on each side, and a hatch on top of the turret for the commander and gunner. Price: $45,000
  • VBC-90 (Light Combat Vehicle): The VBC-90 is a French-built, 6x6, armored car, intended both for domestic use and forthe export market. It features a driver's hatch on the front deck, and commander and gunner's hatches on the turret deck. It has an extremely high road speed, but suffers in cross-country performance due to its size. The vehicle is armed with a 90mm French-built gun which differs slightly from the 90mm low-pressure guns used by other vehicles from non-french countries. Price: $750,000.
  • EE-3 Jararaca (Light Armored Vehicle): The Jararacac is a Brazilian 4x4 recon vehicle in service with a number of armies worldwide. The vehicle comes with a ring mount (NHT equivalent) to which an M2HB MG is usually fitted at the front deck hatch (C). The vehicle has two side doors and a rear deck hatch for crew access. Variant armaments include a 20mm autocannon, a 60mm gun/mortar, and a Milan ATGM launcher. Price: $200,000.
  • EE-9 Cascavel (Light Armored Vehicle): The EE-9 is another Brazilian AFV intended for both domestic service and the export market. The Cascavel is a 6x6 wheeled recon vehicle of conventional layout. It has a driver's hatch on the front deck, commander's and gunner's hatches on the turret, and a firing port on each side. The 90mm gun turret has a coaxial MAG MG, and a mount (NMT equivalent) at the commander's hatch for an optional second MAG MG. Price:$200,000.
  • OTO-Melara 6616 (Light Armored Vehicle): The OTO-Melara 6616 is a private-venture, Italian, 4x4 armored car used by the Italian Army and exported to other countries. It has a driver's hatch in the middle of the front deck, and a commander's hatch and a gunner's hatch on the turret deck. A cupola-mounted M2HB MG (C) is located at the commander's hatch. M1217 Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle "Protector I & II"

The M1217 Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle "Protector" is inspired from the M1117 Guardian, also denoted Armored Security Vehicle (ASV). In the late 1990s, the conversion of the V-100 and V-150 Commando series of armored cars into a rearguard or internal security vehicle was a partial success. First prototypes appeared in February 1997 and serial production of the M1117 commenced between 1999 and early 2000.
At the time, the M1117 was one of the first military vehicles to be built on a specialized mine-resistant hull. After 2001, it was adopted in increasing numbers as a direct response to the threat posed by improvised explosive devices to forces in low intensity conflict.
At the origin, its armament consists of a Mk 19 grenade launcher and a M2HB Browning machine gun, mounted in a turret similar to that used on Armored personnel carrier or Amphibious Assault Vehicle; and a M240H Medium Machine Gun mounted outside the gunner's hatch. The vehicle was utilized by mostly military police and border security units. It is a more heavily protected and heavily armed alternative to the armored Humvee which was not originally designed to be a protected fighting vehicle.
The M1117 had many conceptual and manufacturing faults. In 2007, it failed some ballistics testing, while being presented for export, leading to many country to cancel their order, including the Tovaryan Armed Forces who had planned to received more than 1,200 vehicles to be added to their already 500 fleet of M1117 vehicles.

In 2003, in desperate need to acquire mine-resistant vehicles to equip its border troops, the Soviet Union of Nanban-Ha decides to buy back some of the vehicles produced but not sold as well as the spare parts reserves already acquire by Tovarya. Hundreds of these vehicles were bought between 203 and 2008. At first, despite their flaws, the M1117s behave well enough for the SVS to initiate a more systematic buyback strategy. But in 2009, the decision was taken to withdraw most of them from service. Officially, the reason given was that following several accidents, malfunctions and obvious structural problems to the design, the platform was not viable for active service. In fact, the problem was the renewed interest in the M1117 design by nations facing insurgency. The cost of buying back vehicles increased, as did the difficulty in obtaining spare parts from third parties.

The emergence of the M1217 MPUGCV design

Under the leadership of the Utrustning och Infrastrukturdirektoratet (UID, Equipment & Infrastructure Directorate) of the Sovjetiska Väpnade Styrkorna (SVS, Soviet Armed Forces) of Nanban-Ha, a group of engineers was tasked with studying the possibility of converting the M1117 platforms in order to restore their readiness or if their dismantling should be considered.
Started in 2012, the forskningsrojekt-1217 quickly turned into the development of a Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle design. The main reason was pragmatic at first. The V-100 and V-150 Commando series of armored cars were too old to actually be modified and converted into operational platforms for conventional use. The access to the M1117 platform was becoming difficult. Above all, similar, modern equipment incorporating innovative technological solutions were already produced or likely to be produced in the years to come to equip the SVS. Seeking to multiply the models risked posing problems at all levels of the defense strategy of the Soviet Union. Other choices also came into consideration.
The nature of the platform itself. Obsolete, it made it possible not to focus on its use but rather on its potential operational capabilities. Modifying the original platform did not depend on immediate needs but rather on those that could be attributed to a vehicle of this type. "Faire du neuf avec du vieux", ("Make something new with something old") say the French. The capabilities of the project being almost infinite, the engineers could better take into account the expectations of the UID and more broadly of the SVS, allowing an interweaving of technological advances, operational field feedback as well as the evolution of the defense strategy of the Soviet Union.
The size of the interior made it possible to explore numerous avenues as for the capacities and the characteristics in term of equipment, mobility and armament. Technological developments in the complex and competitive world of robotics and unmanned vehicles could be taken into account in the long term, in particular the continuous decrease of the size ofelectronic components, electronic circuitry and computer engineering elements. "Initially, it was a question of bringing a big computer into a big car protected by armor plates", as Anton Wahlgren and Andreas Norberg, the first co-directors of the project, readily admit. Rosemarie Forsberg who succeeded them also insisted on this point: "Over time, the evolution of our knowledge, our technological capabilities, the range of possibilities and capabilities of each prototype has grown to the point of being able to perform multiple missions at the same time".
Third, its design was a choice to ignore remote-control vehicles like the military robot dogs developed by several companies of the Aeropia Amenasiano region. The UID research department in charge of the project choose to straightforward develop and designed relatively large platforms that do not require non-existing engineer solutions. The main idea behind such an orientation of research and engineering was that the most important thing was to experiment from a relatively malleable platform despite its size. From this point of view, the miniaturization of the components of the project itself would intervene subsequently or should serve other projects. In the immediate term, being able to line up Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicles in itself presented a technological and military advantage that could not be ignored.

Development of the design of the M1217

In 2015, the designation for the project prototype was officially changed to M1217 MPUGCV for Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle. With the help of the Massayianan and Nihon-Ha Armed Forces, the research group acquired some Cadillac Gage Commando, the ancestors of the M1117 platform at the origin of the project. This made it possible to extend the spectrum of the project by including different variations in design as well as the capabilities of each vehicle. This led to the development of two branches from the main design, the Protector I branch using Cadillac Gage Commando platforms and the Protector II branch, based on the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle.

The Protector I project include four variants of the Cadillac Gage Commando vehicle:

  • Commando Scout, a 4x4 vehicle. It has a driver's hatch on the front deck, a commander's hatch on the turret deck, and an exit hatch on the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle's extremely low weight makes it easily air-transportable, and the Commando Scout is very popular with mere groups requiring a light AFV. The vehicle can be armed with a machine gun or a 20mm autocannon. In some models, a single remotely fired TOW II ATGM launcher is also mounted on the turret, or a 40mm autogrenade launcher such as the Mk19 may be fitted in place of the main armament.
  • Commando V-150, 4x4 wheeled APCs (adopted for service in the US Army) comes in several versions, the most common being an APC version, either with a machine gun turret as shown or with a pintle-mounted MAG MG. The 150 series is also available in mortar carrier (turret is removed and replaced with deck hatches), 20mm autocannon, and 90mm gun versions (using the low pressure gun turret from the V-300). The vehicle is fully amphibious at one-fourth its cross-country speed. The vehicle has two side doors, and an exit hatch on the rear deck.
  • Commando V-300 TUA, a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle manufactured by Cadillac Gage, but was not adopted by the US Army. It has an antitank TUA (TOW under armor) version is one of two TOW versions; the other has a single TOW launcher on a nonturreted pintle mount. The V-300 is fully amphibious at one-quarter its cross-country speed. The vehicle has two side doors and a rear exit ramp, plus a commander's hatch in the middle of the top deck fitted.
  • Commando V-300 CS, a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle manufactured by Cadillac Gage, but it was not adopted by the US Army. The CS (combat support) version with a 90mm gun is shown. The V-300 is fully amphibious at one-quarter its cross-country speed. The vehicle has two side doors and a rear exit ramp, plus a commander's hatch atop the turret.
  • Commando V-300 APC, an APC version fitted with a pintle-mounted MAG or M2HB MG, a light power turret incorporating twin machine guns (either MAG or an M2HB/MAG combo) or a 25mm autocannon (same as on the M2 Bradley series). Other armaments include a 40mm GL turret (same as that on the AAVP7A), an air defense version with a turret-mounted 20mm autocannon, and an open topped 82mm mortar version. The V-300 APC is fully amphibious at one-quarter of its cross-country speed.
The Protector II project include all variants of the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle vehicle that serves multiple type of missions, including Command & Control, Recovery Vehicle, Reconnaissance Surveillance & Target Acquisition, Ambulance, Infantry Carrier Vehicle and Direct Fire Support.

The M1217 Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle "Protector" series is designed to provide remote reconnaissance, fire and breaching support, logistic support capabilities to a variety of users, from counter-terrorist force to regular forces, mostly in urban environments.
The M1217 MPUGCV can be used autonomously on a predefined road all manually operated by one man from a truck control station or by a small backpack control station.
The various vehicle variants serving as the basis for the M1217 MPUGCV have undergone significant modifications, in particular with the removal of all equipment linked to personnel previously required. The free space allows not only to install the computer equipment necessary for the operation of these platforms, batteries for this material as well as the vehicle, the extension of the ammunition storage, the installation of devices and storage settings for support mission as well as modules allowing a rapid modification of the range of missions that can be accomplished by each platform.
The originally designed version is supposed to be armed with 30mm automatic cannon, 4 ready-to-launch anti-tank guided missiles, 6 ready-to-launch reactive flamethrowers and a heavy machine gun mounted on the left side of the vehicle. Two anti-tank launcher and 3 flamethrowers launcher are located on each side of the turret. The anti-tank guided missiles can be replace by the same amount of surface-to-air missiles launcher.
The M1217 MPUGCV can resist firing of small arms ammunition, shell splinters, some anti-tank grenade-launcher or anti-tank missile systems. The plates of the hull, made of steel, offer protection for the vehicle suspension.
The robotic system is equipped with various remote-controlled sensor modules such laser warning system and electro optic thermal imaging cameras. It has an on board fire control system comprised of automatic target detection, identification and tracking devices as an elaborate ballistic computer. The systems are able to detect and track targets at a distance of up to 6-7 kilometers during the day and 3-4 kilometers during the night.
The M1217 MPUGCV has two operation modes: semi-autonomous and manual. In semi-autonomous mode, it can automatically identify, detect, track and combat enemy targets based on the pre-programmed path set by the operator. In manual mode, the M1217 MPUGCV is manually control by a single operator from a mobile command and control station mounted on a truck or in a backpack from a safe distance which can go until 500 to 1 kilometer.
The vehicle is powered by a diesel electric power source which provide a speed of 30-31 kilometers/hour on a highway and a maximum 20 kilometers/hour speed in cross-country environment. In off-road conditions, it moves slowly at 10 kilometers/hour. The chassis offers increased cross-country mobility.

M1217-A Multi-Purpose Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle "Protector I" Variants

Every variant incorporate enhanced armor upgrades, such as the explosive reactive armor and titanuim armor on their roof and expose sides. All of this variant are capable to resist mine and IED to a certain degree.

  • M1217-A1 Scout: based on the Commando Scout variant from Cadillac Gage, its extremely low weight makes it easily air-transportable. The vehicle can be armed with a machine gun, a 20mm or 30mm autocannon. Two sets of remotely fired TOW II ATGM launcher are mounted on each side of the turret. A 40mm auto-grenade launcher such as the Mk19 may be fitted in place of the main armament.
  • M1217-A2 Commando: based on the 4x4 wheeled APC Commando V-150 variant of the Commando V-150 from Cadillac Gage. The vehicle can be armed with a machine gun, a 20 or 30mm autocannon as well as a 90mm gun. Two sets of remotely fired TOW II ATGM launcher are mounted on each side of the turret.   • M1217-A4 Heavy Ordnance: based on a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle variant of the Commando V-300 CS from Cadillac Gage. The vehicle can be armed with a 90mm gun with an autoloader. Two sets of remotely fired TOW II ATGM launcher are mounted on each side of the turret. A 40mm auto-grenade launcher such as the Mk19 or a mortar-launcher from various caliber may be fitted in place of the main armament. The vehicle is fully amphibious at one-fourth its cross-country speed.
Non-battle readiness tested variants

  • M1217-A5: based on the Commando Scout variant from Cadillac Gage. This version has no armament but several layers of reinforced armor. It is equipped with a compartment which can be filled with a large quantity of explosive (between 500kg to 1 ton).
  • M1217-A6: based on the 4x4 wheeled APC Commando V-150 variant of the Commando V-150 from Cadillac Gage. It is equipped with a compartment which can be filled with a large quantity of explosive (between 1 to 2 tons).
  • M1217-A7: based on the 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle variant of the Commando V-300 TUA from Cadillac Gage. It is equipped with a compartment which can be filled with a large quantity of explosive (between 1 to 3 tonnes).

The M1217 Protector I & II variants can be operated remotely beyond visual line of sight utilizing 5G and 4G networks. But in areas where the civilian infrastructure is partially or totally destroyed, mobile relay trucks are a necessity. In term of combat readiness, it allow vehicles operation even from longer distances with higher reliability. The demonstration of remote-controlled M1217 Protector vehicle under 5G network was made in cooperation with the University of Avensborg.



Each M1217 Protector I & II variants are all modular platforms and can be modified according to the need of its operators.

History

The idea to convert T-54/55 into APC come from Israel defense force after the War in Lebanon in the 1950s. The standard APCs then in service, like the M113, could hardly withstand anti-tank weapons hit without extra protection, especially from the whole range of third generation launchers used by the Hezbollah. The main battle tank from the IDF was encountering difficulties to the point where it was used as improvised heavy APC, due to its rear access and roomy interior. A solution which was far from optimal the main reason being that converting Merkava to APC actually reduced production and the available fleet of MBT.
The solution provided by the IDF was to use the mass of captured vehicles, in particular the T-54/55 in order to transform them into APC, thus freeing the production chains of Merkava from the pressure of producing two types of models.
The first attempts at conversion, notably the Tiran-4S, were unsuccessful. Their weak protection, manufacturing faults and difficulties in nested too different systems within the same platform forced the iDF to use them as training or reserve vehicles.
The need for a large fleet of vehicles capable of supporting infantry in urban combat accelerated the design and production processes leading to the creation of a heavy CPA, the first of its kind in the world.

"The decision was taken in 1986, and work started with the design bureau of the Israeli Defence Forces Corps of Ordnance, leading to a prototype in 1988, which was tested and accepted into service. 250 conversions followed over the years, to serve in Lebanon. The original upper part of the chassis was entirely removed, turret included, and the lower part was also modified (engine cradle, suspension bearings, electrical wiring, etc.). A new more modern and compact NIMDA 650-hp engine (1st series) was relocated in the rear-left part.
The original drivetrain and torsion bars were apparently left unchanged. A troop compartment was created in the central part, with a right-rear side access door. The compartment was roomy enough for seven fully equipped infantrymen, while the rest of the crew was composed of the driver, MG-gunner and commander (which in option could have a bulletproof glass turret over his hatch) at the front. The driver’s hatch comprised as usual three periscopes covering the frontal arc.
Since protection was paramount, it took the shape of a new add-on armour glacis at the front, and thick side armour made of ERA modules inserted into bulkheads, parts of composite armour up to 200 mm thick. Roof protection was increased with a full set of ERA bricks. Armament now comprised two 7.62 mm machine guns fired from inside, and a single 7.62 mm Rafael Overhead Weapon Station (OWS) remote station. The latter could be replaced more recently by an improved 12.7 mm Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station.
A second version of the Achzarit, the Achzarit Mk.2 was produced later on. The main difference included a new 850 hp diesel engine by NIMDA, and possibly armour upgrades. Design of the conversion

In 1991, the problem of the conversion of obsolete military equipments became an intense topic of discussions among experts from the Utrustning och Infrastrukturdirektoratet (UID, Equipment & Infrastructure Directorate) of the Sovjetiska Väpnade Styrkorna (SVS, Soviet Armed Forces) of Nanban-Ha. Access to the plans of the conversion prototypes on which the Israeli engineers were working, in particular concerning the T-54 or T-55 type platforms, considerably accelerated the decision-making process within the SVS. In March 1992, the order was given to work on a prototype which could not only equip the army but also constitute a potential import product.
The constraints imposed on the engineers in charge of the project were simple. Transform the T-54/55 platforms into a medium or heavy armored personnel carrier, flexible in terms of secondary equipment, particularly with regard to its potential equipment such as turrets or augmented defense systems that can be added to the original platform.
The prototype had to present several characteristics concerning the maintenance of its operational readiness, in combat as with regard to its status within the arsenal of the SVS. In other words, the General Staff expressed the wish that the new platform could see its lifespan and its capacities be modified and expanded as needed, as well as having access to a reliable vehicle, easily deployable in every condition, every type of conflict. In this sense, the prototype had to be equipped, in its lightest version, with a heavy machine gun as the main armament. This armament could be completed, without major modification, by two other pieces of equipment of the same type, including while in the field. The engine had to be able to deliver at least 650 to 850 hp, allowing to obtain a ratio of 14 to 19 hp per ton. Particular attention had to be paid to the comfort of the occupants of the vehicle, its crew as well as its passengers. Above all, the prototype had to be able to offer an operational autonomy of 600 km and to maintain a speed of movement in open and cleared terrain of 60 to 65 km/h.
The first prototype was proposed in August 1993. Its characteristics were considered insufficient at the time with regard to the material means and the needs of the SVS. The General Staff in particular asked for a reassessment of its interior design which made too many modifications to the habitat, risking weakening the structure of the vehicle. Engineers' desire to expand transport capacity in terms of passengers and their equipment came up against what Fieldmarshal Tortennsson called the "Olympian mentality" of UID engineers. "We don't want to jump higher, launch further. We want to acquire a platform capable of transporting our forces from the rear to their combat positions without endangering their operational capacities and their level of readiness. medium or heavy platform which will be at the same time a danger for the enemy and an asset for our forces. In February 1994, a new prototype was proposed by the UID. Responding to Tortennsson's remarks, the engineers emphasized on armor instead of firepower. The T-54 or T-55 original chassis was heavily modified. The crew compartment was moved to the front of the vehicle. The passenger compartment was reduced from ten to seven, at the location of the turret, while the engine compartment was installed at the rear, in a more compact version. The major advantage of this new internal structure was multiple. The engine compartment could be replaced entirely without major modifications being necessary or requiring specialist engineers to work on the vehicle. Finally, the engine compartment could be installed on the right or left of the rear of the vehicle, allowing some protection for the crew hatch.
The main armament of the prototype could be a 7.62mm heavy machine gun, a 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun or a multiple grenade launcher. Additionally two or three 7.62mm MAG machine guns could be pintle mounted.
The protection of the vehicle was considerably improved. The original chassis was retained but supplemented by spaced armor to provide protection against common rocket launcher warheads and autocannon rounds. Particular emphasis was placed on the frontal armor of the prototype capable to withstand 100mm to 125mm tank gun rounds.
The advantage of using the T-54 or T-55 tracked chassis gave the vehicle very good off road mobility, especially in relatively difficult terrain such as the swamps of eastern Nanban-Ha.
After the first tests, the original engine was replaced by a compact Vindal Diesel 665 hp turbocharged diesel engine. The first series produced showed flaws, especially in terms of engine power deemed underpowered and unable to keep up with the main battle tanks of the SVS. A new variant model with a powerful Jurgentopp 850 hp turbocharged diesel remedies this shortcoming.

M6155 Armored Personal Carrier "Black Bear" Variants

All M6155 Armored Personal Carrier "Black Bear" incorporate enhanced armor upgrades, such as the explosive reactive armor and titanuim armor on their roof and expose sides. Fire testing, seating and ammunition stowage arrangements are significantly different from the Achzarit APC, like the ammunition storage which was rearranged to enhance safety. All the platforms, except the Ambulance variant, have been equipped with enhanced information and communication equipment, a central processing unit, information displays for the vehicle commander and squad leader, laser rangefinder, global positioning system and compass, missile countermeasure device, combat identification system, and thermal viewer for the driver. The vehicle commander also has an independent thermal viewer and a new integrated sight inspired from the Improved Bradley Acquisition System (IBAS), which allows automatic gun adjustments, automatic boresighting, and tracking of dual targets. All the platforms have been made compatible with the inter-vehicular communication system of different type.

The different versions of armored vehicles are used for this platform are marked with a letter system (respectively A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 for T-54/55, T-62, T-64, T-72 and T-80 platforms). For example, M6155-4 Command on a T-62 platform would be designated as M6155-4A3 Command.

  • M6155-2 Urban Combat I: this platform with an enclosed doghouse made of 7 bulletproof windows (and an armoured panel on the back) for urban combat. This platform can be equipped with one or multiple mounted firepower stations which can be accommodate with different types of ordnance (grenade launcher, autocannon, heavy machinegun).
  • M6155-3 Urban Combat II: the platform fitted with an extra cargo capacity, a winch and a dozer blade. An extra heavy platform, the M6155/2-IIA is equipped with an autoturret which can be accommodate with different types of ordnnance (grenade launcher, autocannon, heavy machinegun).
  • M6155-4 Command: platform equipped with an enclosed armoured bulletproof glass windows firing post, with a hatch above, and some communication equipment. Can be use by company or battalion commander.
  • M6155-5 Recon: platform equipped with long range communications system, extra special thermal and range equipment.
  • M6155-6 Heavy Mortar: the center of the platform is set up to have mortar or multiple mortar launcher system.
  • M6155-7 Ambulance: the interior is tailored to maximize the number of stretchers carried. Special storage compartment are also installed to provide enough medical equipment to set a limited triage on the front line. Even immobilize, this platform can be used as an emergency station post for seriously injured personnels.
