General background: With the growing role of the Free Kingdom’s Armed Forces and the Greater Prussian armed forces in both counterterrorist operations and humanitarian relief operations, there has been an increasing need for power sources to provide power to foreign military bases, as well as to power civilian infrastructure where power plants have been damaged by terrorism or natural disasters. After some consideration, it was decided that the time had come for the Free Kingdom Armed Forces to develop a new generation of portable reactors. While previous military reactors have existed around the world since the 1960s, most of them were not truly mobile, as they consisted of multiple units that had to be fixed in place (and sometimes dug into the ground) to operate safely.

The Prometheus, offered up by the Serene Power Company of the High Treefolk was something entirely different - a reactor that, together with its generation unit, fit entirely into a forty-foot shipping container. It could be transported to any location by aircraft or helicopter, and simply powered up. After a power-down procedure it could also be moved away.

Alternatively, the Prometheus can also be ordered in a Prometheus Quad[tm] unit, in which the purchaser receives four FEU-sized sub-units that cannot function on their own, but which can be used together as a single 81-MWe assembly (i.e. more powerful than four separate Prometheus units.

Economics and Logistics: The Prometheus reactor is priced at approximately $75 million dollars, which enables it to compete favorably with fossil fuels both in the sense of fuel costs (over its 20 years of expected lifetime, the Prometheus reactor costs less than a comparable fossil fuel operation just in terms of fuel costs), and in terms of military supplies consumed. (Feeding diesel generators or power plants with a comparable output to a Prometheus reactor requires organizing approximately 286 convoys per year to feed their logistics needs in fuel and parts, whereas the Prometheus requires 8 shipments per year, primarily of parts. This is estimated to vastly reduce casualties occuring during convoys, simply because convoys are reduced by over 95%.

After the first 15-20 years of its operation, the Prometheus can be safely refueled, and its lifespan extended by another 15-20 years period.

The Prometheus, or components of the Prometheus Quad, can be safely airlifted using regular aircraft, such as the C-130, Il-76, or even a large skycrane helicopter such as the Mi-26.

Safety: The reactor is a closed-cycle gas-cooled reactor, designed to remain under a temperature of under 1700 degrees Celsius in all circumstances, and utilizes a system of self-contained fuel elements, which can be safely removed with all their ‘waste’ upon the end of their life cycle, utilizing a regular crane and a small group of qualified personnel. They can then be safely removed and stored. The reactor design includes radiation shielding under most practical circumstances, obviating the need for expensive and time-consuming construction of shielding equipment.
