The reform of the Greater Prussian Stellar Navy required a range of special conditions on the new Navy's ships. Rather than attempt (as with previous designs) to build expensive, powerful ships to meet the galaxy's premier combatants on a one-to-one basis, it was decided to proceed with a much humbler project. The new ships would be utilizing deliberately simple technologies (or at least, 'simple' as far as faster-than-light warships were concerned. This would present several strategic advantages.
First, containing none of the most advanced, classified technologies used by the Free Kingdom of Allanea and other members of Greater Prussia, the ships in question could be exported to alliance members and even non-members, without jeopardizing the leading members' defense technology edge. Second, the ships in question could be produced in Allanea, Menelmacar, New Dornalia, or any other Greater Prussia member state that had achieved the capability to build interstellar spacecraft, a fact that would both boost member state economies and enable the ability to build thousands more ships if the GPSN suffered significant combat losses.
To do this, of course, certain compromises had to be made. The ships were designed utilizing common technologies from the Skyriver galaxy – particularly, the hyperdrive technology commonly in use there. Large interior spaces had been dedicated to the deployment of eight spinal plasma cannon, aimed by rotating the entire ship. Further, recessed in special hardpoints along the ship's sides were 16 lesser plasma cannon, capable of covering firing arcs along the ship's sides (coverage along the rear arc is limited to non-existent, but the ship's STL drive can be modulated to fire as a close-range weapon).
Another item to which Greater Prussian engineers paid significant attention was personnel comfort. Each crewman is assigned a separate, comfortable room, and special conditions are prepared for the officers. As the GPSN is led by members of the social and political elite of Reichskamphen, and other GPE member nations, each ship is equipped with a luxurious 7-room Captain's Suite and an identical suite for the XO. Additionally, there is a large officers' club, (equipped with two billiard tables and a well-furnished bar), as well as an officers' mess hall.
A particular point of pride is the bridge. Beyond the regular furnishings seen on the bridges of starships everywhere in the galaxy, the bridges of all Greater Prussian ships have a ceiling in the form of a large dome, on which the movements of friendly and enemy ships are continuously portrayed, in either a regular or a schematic form, to ease the comprehension of maneuvers in space battle by the commanders.
In short, while it is not the most heavily-armed, nor the most advanced of vessels, the Lance-class is an excellent choice for a nation making its first foray into the world of interstellar politics and war.
