Caron Iron Works is one of the premier machinery companies in Virginia, producing industrial machinery, farm equipment, locomotives, and even military equipment. It is headquartered in Leesburg, Virginia, CSA.
About
Caron Iron Works started life as a small blacksmith shop in pre-war Middleburg, VA, founded by now-governor James Caron. Prior to the war, Caron had been a blacksmith, chiefly supplying iron horseshoes and repairing iron farm equipment.
During the war, Caron was enlisted in the Army of Northern Virginia, and witnessed both bloodshed and the new machinery of the time. Up to the end of the war, Caron had gained a decent understanding of machinery, to the point of continually making performance modifications to his unit's British-built traction engine.
After the war, as the demand for new agricultural machinery increased, James Caron, with $700 saved during the war, bought an old furnace in Leesburg, and began making replacement parts for the mostly British-imported farm equipment, officially founding Caron Iron Works in 1868.
By 1873, the fledgling Caron Iron Works began to build its own traction engines, as well as other steam-powered equipment. By that time, the company had expanded, building a much more advanced furnace, and adding a machine works. Sales grew rapidly after the abolition of slavery in 1873, as plantation owners rapidly switched to mechanised farming.
By 1881, Caron Iron Works was selling machinery all over the country, and had long expanded beyond just farm equipment, now also producing industrial equipment and even locomotives. It was at this time that locomotives built at CIW's brand-new Manassas locomotive works were ordered and transported to Nippon, for use on the Hokkaido frontier on coal mine railways.
