The KR-22 Cataphract is the first of Kronos Inc.'s Legion Universal Combat Platform, which is forecasted to supersede most tracked combat vehicles currently in service within the Greater Eastern Union Defense Forces. While the entire combat platform was meant as a response after an assessment of threats in the modern 21st-century battlefield, the KR-22 Cataphract is an epitome of the platform's unique philosophy, built to gain a competitive edge against most modern battle tanks currently in service.

The unique philosophy of the KR-22 Cataphract begins with its overall design; it is manned by a crew of three - the gunner, driver and commander. Such reduction of crew from four to three was made possible through the introduction of autoloaders within the unmanned turret; though an unorthodox feature, the unmanned turret minimizes the potential of losing crew if the turret is hit, while also easing the replacement of turrets in post-combat situations. Instead, all three personnel are positioned inside an armored section within the chassis, maximizing crew survivability in pressured combat situations. The crew compartment is also suited for CBRN situations, should such weapons of mass destruction are also deployed in the battlefield. It prioritizes crew survivability for the most part: the capsulized crew compartment is estimated to have a RHA equivalent of almost 1000 mm RHA,

Its armor, however, is compensated by the usage of modular reactive armor and other countermeasure systems. Although the armor itself is superb - composite armor consisting of tungsten, fiberglass, titanium composites and optionally depleted uranium, there has been initial criticism that this may not be enough for parts outside the crew compartment. To compensate for this seeming deficiency, the KR-22 Cataphract utilizes modules of both explosive and non-explosive (optional) reactive armor in the chassis and turret, effectively covering the turret and key spots from the threat of munitions. While also boasting an array of ECM, smoke grenades and other passive countermeasures managed by the ARES-C Ground Combat Management System (GCMS), it utilizes the Thunderbolt APS built by Li-Jien Dynamics, which launches active kill munitions to destroy and neutralize incoming anti-tank guided missiles: a four-side AESA radar system, coupled with ECM as well as acoustic and laser detection systems, detect the incoming missile, which is downed by an anti-missile grenade launched towards the direction.

The ARES-C Ground Combat Management System primarily handles and augments the combat situation to the crew in the capsulized compartment, using cutting-edge infrared sights and other electronics to give a 360-degree spectrum of the battlefield situation. The gunner's sight is augmented by the ARES-C by allowing real-time detection and tracking of the target, thereby increasing the chances of hitting a target. The ARES-C system is also in charge of controlling the unmanned turret's weapons, which, in the case of the Cataphract, is both the 120 mm/L55 smoothbore cannon and the 7.62 mm RWS on the turret.
