For many years, the Free Kingdom Armed Forces have utilized a variety of rifles in .308/7.62 Greater Prussian (known in some countries as the 7.62 NATO). Until very recently, the rifle of choice of the Free Kingdom has been the FN-FGR, designed and produced by Questers. While an excellent rifle, the FN-FGR has always been somewhat bulky and heavy, and various proposals have been sought out to replace it.

Eventually, the Joint Services Small Arms Board assembled a Special Committee on the Infantry Rifle, which considered and weighed two principal offers – a transition back to an ‘intermediate’ cartridge (utilizing either 5.56mm or 5.45mm ammunition, both of which are still produced in Allanea for export and for use by civilian shooters), and the development of a new rifle in 7.62. Due to the proliferation of high-durability body armour, such as the Lyran Arms Dauntless, and the existence of non-human aggressors that may be bulkier and heavier than baseline human beings, and thus require a larger firearm, it was decided to proceed with the latter.

After some consideration, several designs were submitted by Allanean Arms, Armatax, and Izhevsk Mechanical Plant. The winning design was the Allanean Arms rifle, which was then approved for armed forces use as the M6A1. This was a carbine-length firearm, based on the AR15 series of rifles.

Combining the knowledge of modern materials engineering, records from the use of various rifles by Allanean, Greater Prussian, and allied soldiers in the field, Allanean Arms had eventually created the M18 rifle and M6A1 carbine. In its stock configuration, it is a 16”-barreled rifle, equipped with Picatinni rails, and weighing only 3.3 kilograms unloaded. The M6A1 was even lighter, weighing in at 3.15 kg. Conversely, an M18D (Designated Marksman) version was made that involved a special trigger and improved quality control, as well as a molycoated barrel.

The Free Kingdom Government then purchased the central production rights from Allanean Arms, and contracted it, and several other arms makers, to make the gun. Under the conditions where the Free Kingdom Government owns the copyright, manufacturers within Allanea can produce the gun freely, whereas foreign agencies must negotiate production rights with the Free Kingdom Government. (This is primarily an export control measure).

The M18 and M6A1 are available for both civilian markets and for the military. In nations where the M18 and M6A1 cannot be legally purchased as full-auto firearms, semi-automatic and even bolt-action versions can be made available by manufacturers.
