WHO WE ARE



Founded by Joseph Henry MacDonald in 1887, the business quickly grew from its first store in ???, ???, with his son Robert MacDonald joining him in 1899. Under their joint management, J. H. MacDonald's emerged as one of the first North Laurentian department store chains, taking inspiration from existing retailers abroad. By Joseph's passing in 1923, J. H. MacDonald's had expanded nationwide, with stores from coast to coast.

A devout Methodist, Joseph was committed to the safety and wellbeing of his employees, and J. H. MacDonald's proudly continues this to the modern day, The Herald continually ranking us among the top 5 North Laurentian companies to work for in their annual Best Companies to Work For list.

A family business to this day, J. H. MacDonald's is owned by Joseph's great-great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Elizabeth MacDonald, who took over the business after her father's retirement in 2015.
