Gracefield Shipyard can trace its origin to the year 1691, when John Gracefield opened a shop for the repairing of small fishing vessels in the colonial city of Baltimare. After noticing the poor quality of the boats that were brought to him, he decided to design and build his own line of skiffs. Soon he had obtained local popularity for his sturdy and efficient design, and found he was making more profit from constructing new boats than repairing old ones. In 1693 he moved on to designing cutters, and eventually with the expansion of his business in 1698 he was constructing merchant schooners for coastal transport. In 1699 he hired a chief engineer, George Watts, and in 1702 they had constructed their first sloop. They were given an order for a second sloop of the same pattern by a representative of the renowned East Imperial Company, and by 1707 they had a flourishing company with its own small shipyard. They continued constructing sloops of various design until moving further up to brigs in 1710, and their first frigate in 1718. John Gracefield retired and passed the company onto his son, Peter Gracefield, in 1732, after which the company received its first military contract in 1737 for a gun boat. Gracefield Shipyard provided invaluable service during the War for Sovereignty in 1745, and has since become the leading ship constructor for the Imperial Navy and East Imperial Company. Today Gracefield Shipyard owns and operates 3 shipyards in Baltimare, Phillydelphia, and New Canterlot, and holds shares in 12 different shipbuilding companies. Along with ship construction facilities, Gracefield Shipyard owns several private dockyards, a port in the Colony of Darkpool, and operates a private fleet of 20 vessels. We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship, attention to detail, and ingenuity.

Whether you're a nation making its start in the golden Age of Sail, an individual seeking the novelty of owning a sailing vessel, a historical organization, or something else entirely, Gracefield Shipyard can more than adequately provide for your needs. All ships are constructed with care and held to the highest standard, rigorously scrutinized and tested at multiple points in the construction process. Our timber is gathered from company owned and privately owned reserves across the Empire, with all trees being certified for hardness and quality. The drying and aging processes we employ ensure a maximum lifespan for all our vessels, as well as decreasing the chances of board warping at sea. And our specially invented construction techniques give our ships superiority in both survivability and armament over similar ships of the same size.

If you would like to order a ship for construction and purchase, please review the proper despatch guidelines outlined below. In order to streamline communications, we have a pre-written letter provided for your convenience, but you are welcome to write us your own. We only ask that you include all the necessary information we require to complete your purchase. Special orders can also be accepted, and should we find the design a good one, we may adopt it as a standard pattern vessel (simply acknowledge if you wish for us to do so). After your order has completed construction, you may either send a crew to sail it, or we can provide a crew to sail it for you, at additional cost. All newly completed vessels sail under a flag of civil neutrality, recognized by all nations, so their safe passage is ensured. If you still feel uncomfortable or uneasy of your vessel undertaking its journey, we offer two insurance plans available for purchase up to the day of the ship's launch.

Despatch Guidelines
1: All despatches must include type of ships being purchased and number of each. Otherwise the order will not be accepted.
2: Any information not included will be assumed as a "no."
3: You are welcome to include any other information you may think to be relevant.
4: Despatches must be made "In-Character" and with reasonable English grammar.
5: Despatches should be made with consideration given to national tech levels (please refer to the "Tech Lvl Notice").

Nations of all tech levels are welcome to purchase ships from Gracefield Shipyard, and no one will be disallowed from purchasing a product on the basis of tech level. All that is asked is respect be given to the tech level of the storefront (for instance, not asking for any future tech modifications to be made to a ship), as well as that of other nations. Thank you.

Ships-of-the-Line

Andy Class - First Rate

In 1775 the rapidly emerging but still fledgling New Equestrian Imperial Navy comprised mainly of re-fitted merchant vessels and foreign privateers. Very few military ships of New Equestrian origin were in service, none of which carried more than 32 guns. The need for a powerful striking ship was of the utmost importance to the Admiralty, to enable the navy to compete with larger and more established nations. A contest was held to design a ship carrying at least 72 guns, and weighing at least 1,800 tonnes. After reviewing all the entries, the Admiralty chose the design submitted by Gracefield Shipyard; a first rate Ship-of-the-Line carrying 120 guns on three main gun decks, with a displacement of 5,000 tonnes. Among the ship's many innovative features was a simple yet streamlined hull and revolutionary sail placement, allowing for speeds up to 10 knots, and in one case 12. The design was finalized in 1773, with the first ship being ordered the same year. The first ship of the class, IES Andy was laid down in 1774, completed in 1777, then launched and commissioned in 1778. Due to the high cost, only 3 more were built in the proceeding 10 years. In 1800, 4 more were ordered for construction, and a final third batch of 4 in 1804. No more than 12 were built.

Type: First Rate Ship-of-the-Line
Displacement: 5, 020 tonnes
Beam: 16.10 metres
Draught: 8.55 metres
Height (waterline to top of mainmast): 63.8 metres
Length (bowsprit to stern): 67.4 metres
Propulsion: Sails, 4,190 m2
Masts: 3
Rigging: Square-rigged
Speed: 10 knots, up to 12 knots in good conditions
Boats: 1 x (14m) pinnace, 3 x (9.1m) cutters, 1 x (7.3m) launch, 4 x (6.7m) jolly boats
Total Effective Complement: 1,020 - 1,100, including 10 commissioned officers
Marine Complement: 135 enlisted, 5 officers
Armament: 124 guns total (standard)
Lower Gundeck: 34 x 36 pounder long guns
Middle Gundeck: 36 x 26-pounder long guns
Upper Gundeck: 34 x 16-pounder long guns
Quarterdeck: 8 x 12-pounder short guns, 8 x 32 pounder carronades, 4 x swivel guns
Forecastle: 2 x 12-pounder long guns, 2 x 38 pounder carronades, 4 x swivel guns
Hull: Oak, .3 - .6 metres thick

Purchase Cost (equipped): $580,000 NSD

Frigates

Iron Class

Despite fielding the large Andy first rates, and a respectable fleet of Furie sloops, a design was still needed to close the gap between affordability and capitol firepower. In 1788 The New Equestrian government put out a request for a ship carrying at least 36 guns, with a displacement over 1,800 tonnes. After receiving a design by renowned shipwright Humphrey Joshua for a "heavy frigate," funds were appropriated for the construction of six of these ships, with private shipyards being contracted for the construction. Gracefield Shipyard was one of those chosen for construction, and the keel for Constitution, the third ship of her class, was laid in 1794. In 1796 construction was halted as the government debated weather new vessels were actually necessary. Eventually it was decided to complete the first three of the six originally planned ships, Constitution among them, with construction being completed later that same year, and her launch in 1797. What makes the Iron class design unique is the white and live oak hull layering, in addition to "ribbing" along the bottom of the ship, each constructed from a single tree rather than separate sections joined together. The result is an exceptionally strong ship able to carry far more firepower than any other ship of her class, while being able to withstand otherwise devastating hits. Combined with Gracefield Shipyard's construction and carpentry techniques, the Constitution is an especially notable and fearsome ship. In 1806 it was decided to resume construction on the other 3 original ships, which were completed in 1808. Although only 6 Iron class heavy frigates were built, the design was modified to be cheaper both monetarily and materially, and renamed the Adamant class.

Type: Heavy Frigate
Displacement: 2,210 tonnes
Beam: 13.26 metres
Draught: 6.7 metres
Height (waterline to top of mainmast): 70 metres
Length: 95 metres
Propulsion: Sails, 3,975 m2
Masts: 3
Rigging: Ship-Rigged
Speed: 12 knots, up to 14 knots in good conditions
Boats: 1 x (11m) longboat, 2 x (9.1m) cutters, 2 x (8.5m) whaleboats, 2 x (6.7m) jolly boats, 1 x (4.3m) punt
Total Effective Complement: 395 - 410, including 5 commissioned officers
Marine Complement: 55 enlisted, 3 officers
Armament: 52 guns total (standard)
Gun Deck: 30 x 24 pounder long guns, 2 x 24 pounder bow chasers
Spar Deck: 22 x 32 pounder carronades
Hull: 3 layers; White Oak, Live Oak, White Oak, .45 - .55 metres thick

Purchase Cost (equipped): $420,000 NSD
Purchase Cost (hull): $360,000 NSD

Adamant Class

The Adamant class frigate is essentially a re-designed Iron class, made to be all around cheaper. It is a respectable warship, and forms the bulk of the Imperial Navy's foreign fleets. Despite fielding less firepower and armour than the Iron class, it is actually better suited to the task of being a fleet frigate, whereas the Iron class is intended for more clandestine and independent operations. Adamant class warships often act in a communicative role, relaying flag signals amongst the larger Ships-of-the-Line in battle, delivering mail, and acting as scouts or pickets.

Type: Frigate
Displacement: 1,650 tonnes
Beam: 10.20 metres
Draught: 5.8 metres
Height (waterline to top of mainmast): 64 metres
Length: 72 metres

Total Effective Complement: 380 - 400, including 5 commissioned officers
Marine Complement: 55 enlisted, 3 officers
Armament: 32 guns total (standard)
Gun Deck: 30 x 18 pounder long guns, 2 x 24 pounder bow chasers

Sloops-of-War

Furie Class

After winning sovereignty from the Kingdom of Equestria in 1753, and being an island nation, the Provincial Government of New Equestria passed a law enabling for "the construction of a fleet of warships to hence provide for the security of the state." The only problem was that the government lacked the financial resources to fund the creation of a navy. This in turn meant the responsibility fell largely onto private and civilian shipyards, with a wide variety of designs and types coming forth. But it was the Trout, later re-christened Furie, that proved superior. Able to be built cheap, requiring little crew, and still fielding a respectable amount of firepower, the Furie was exactly what was needed. After early successes with the initial ship, which launched in 1754, and with the expansion of the Empire, the Furie design was made into its own ship class and 49 more were ordered for construction. Between 1760 and 1770 35 Furie Class brig-sloops were built, for a total of 85. Military construction of the ships ceased in in 1771, with the design being modified for civilian and mercantile use. Despite being an old design, the Furie ships continue to serve exceptionally in the Imperial Navy.

Type: Brig-Sloop
Displacement: 298 tonnes
Beam: 8.9 metres
Draught: 2.5 metres
Height (waterline to top of mainmast): 23.3 metres
Length (bowsprit to spanker): 28.5 metres
Propulsion: Sails, 1,195 m2
Masts: 2
Rigging: Brig rigged
Speed: 14 knots
Boats: 1 x (8.5m) whaleboat, 2 x (7m) jolly boats
Total Effective Complement: 107, including 3 commissioned officers
Marine Complement: 15 - 20 enlisted, 1 officer
Armament: 16 guns total (standard)
Gundeck: 14 x 32 pounder carronades, 2 x 8 pounder bow guns
Upgraded Armament:
Gundeck: 16 x 36 pounder carronades, 2 x 12 pounder bow guns
Hull: Oak, .1 - .2 metres thick

Purchase Cost (equipped): $250,000 NSD
Purchase Cost (hull): $210,000 NSD

Spriggon Class

Faced with a need for small, fast, manoeuvrable patrol vessels, the Imperial Navy completed designs for the Spriggon corvette in 1804. A total of 60 vessels were commissioned for construction, of which Gracefield Shipyards was tasked with 20. The Spriggon corvette provides some additional firepower above a sloop, while maintaining more speed, manoeuvrablity, and lower cost than a frigate. It is designed mainly for coastal patrol, escort, show-of-flag missions, and interceptions and fast attacks, for which a frigate would either be too large or a waste of resources. Corvettes of various sizes often operate independently, or at the head of a flotilla of other small warships. When combined with larger fleets they act in much the same role as sloops, and may occasionally be tasked with carrying out skirmishing actions against enemy vessels, sailing in to fire a volley or two, followed by a hasty withdrawal. The Spriggon class is especially notable in that the hull design borrows from sporting racing yachts, where it is shaped to resemble the body of a fish, resulting in reduced water drag and higher cruising speeds.

Type: Corvette
Displacement: 405 tonnes
Beam: 8.2 metres
Draught: 4 metres
Height (waterline to top of mainmast): 38 metres
Length (bowsprit to spanker): 44.5 metres
Propulsion: Sails, 2,212 m2

Armament: 22 guns total (standard)
Gundeck: 20 x 28 pounder carronades, 2 x 8 pounder bow guns
Hull: Oak, .1 - .2 metres thick

Purchase Cost (equipped): $310,000 NSD

Merchant and Civilian Vessels

Ruby Class Yacht

The Ruby class yacht is a luxury vessel intended for small pleasure voyages, typically no longer than 7 days. Though it has been certified for open seas, these yachts are usually kept relatively close to shore. Built for comfort over sport, the Ruby has ample cabin space to comfortably sleep four people over the course of a week, but can accommodate up to eight. It is delivered with four berths and a small kitchen included as standard, but can be delivered as a hull or fully equipped at the customer's request.

Type: Cruising Yacht (Recreation)

Opal Class Yacht

The Opal class yacht is designed and built exclusively for maximized speed, with its intention as a racing yacht. With a revolutionary hull designed to offer the least possible resistance in the water, combined with lightweight materials, the Opal class is a fearsome competitor. However, it has little cabin space and is not meant for extended voyages with a full crew. The Opal class, though known to be quite seaworthy, is recommended to be sailed for no longer than necessary on open seas, such as trans-oceanic voyages to a racing destination. The Opal comes with a sleeping quarters of four berths and small cargo hold as standard, but can be delivered as a hull or fully equipped at the customer's request.

Type: Racing Yacht-Schooner (Sport)
Displacement: 22 tonnes

OOC: Are those prices meant to be in 1700s dollars, or in modern-day USD-equivalent?

In 1794, the US Navy procured its famous first six frigates for $688,000 total, which is nearly 10 million in today's money. Possibly you should make your ships more expensive?

It would be our humblest pleasure to accept the offer you have placed forth for an advertisement in your most esteemed newspaper. We will begin work on a draft at the earliest possible convenience. Should there be any further rules or regulations with regard to content, layout, or other such matters, we would request such details be relayed as soon as may be possible. We look forward to hear word from you again, with the possibility of further business interaction, and once again extend our heartfelt thanks for this most gracious offer we have had the honor to receive.

Just make sure that the advertisement isn't too large

In 1794, the US Navy procured its famous first six frigates for $688,000 total, which is nearly 10 million in today's money. Possibly you should make your ships more expensive?

OOC: It's hard to figure out as my ships are based off real ones from the early 1700s to early 1800s, in Britain and the US. The prices were intended to reflect the historicals, not the modern equivalent (thought it would be kinda funny to have ships that appeared to be super cheap lol). I will however look into this, thank you for bringing it to my attention.

To the Gracefield Shipyard
From the Regius Historica Societatis

We at the Regius Historica Societatis have for a very long time been planning to start reenactment naval battles of all sorts. Specifically, we want to reenact the Battle of the Vasconia coast. But unfortunately, we fell into the problem of many shipyards either not accepting to build these types of ship or them already too occupied from orders from either the navy or private orders. But then we found your company, and even found that many of your ships have the same dimensions as ours. So we come to you to help us finish our mock fleet. We only really ask for one modification on the ships bought. That they have a few cosmic details added to make them look like the imperial fleet back in 1821, and these modifications will be explained in slightly more detail on the application left below.

Sincerely the board of the Regius Historica Societatis, March 11th, 1904

Ship Purchasing Info

Ships you are purchasing and number of each: 2 Andy class, 7 Adamant class, 5 Iron class, 19 Spriggon class

Are ships being purchased equipped or as a hull? (Please specify which are being purchased as which) we would like to purchase all ships as hulls. We have the equipment for them already.

Would you like a provided crew? (This will add an additional 200 NSD per 100 sailors. Please specify which ships you would like crewed.) No, we already have crew ready

Ship Modifications you would like made (this will add additional cost): as we are a historical society, we would like a few minor cosmetic additions to make the ships look more like ones used during the earlier parts of the Alpini civil war. We have left examples of major ships and the type of ship they are below, with these ones proven to have fought in the battle. Your company does not have to do any of these things as this is just a request

Note: Many factbooks are in a constant state of WIP or being considered for entire rework or deletion

Welcome to The Alpes a Septentrionali Imperium, a nation where I brutalize and adapt Latin and French History to my needs to get my Ultraroyalist Absolutist French Monarchy with a vaguely French-sounding fictional royal family to work.

Don't ask about the flag, it has something to do with RMB RP that I'm involved with.

To the representative in correspondence with the Regius Historica Societatis,
in regards to the purchasing of ships for historical reenactment,
heretofore received, this date, 17 July, 1819 (Imperial Calendar)

Sir, -

The requested ships on your order (2 Andy class, 7 Adamant class, 5 Iron class, and 19 Spriggon class) have been ordered for construction, and word shall be promptly sent once they have been completed. The time estimated for the completion of all ships is approximately 6 to 8 months. The requested cosmetic additions shall be applied with no additional cost, as they will incur a near negligible expense on construction. Furthermore we would like to extend an offer for a 20% discount on your order since it is for the purposes of historical education, which Gracefield Shipyard as well as the New Equestrian Imperial government prize very highly. We wish you the utmost luck in your endeavors, and are honored to be given the opportunity to provide for your needs. Once again we thank you for your purchase, and look forward to your continued patronage.

Yours respectfully,

William Sigmund,
Corresponding Secretary,
Gracefield Shipyard.
