History

Postby Australian rePublic » Thu Nov 10, 2016 2:22 pm

In 1950, Bob Calwhich opened his first ship yard on the Murray River. Being located on Australia's largest body of fresh water, Bob Calwhich specialised in fresh water ships, before realising that he would benefit from expanding his opperations to the ocean

In 1952, Bob Calwhich was able to purchase a ship yard in Melbourne, which maintained the large ocean liners bringing in migrants. Here is where Calwhich learnt to build salt water vessels.

In 1973, Bob Calwich passed his business onto his son Thomas, and on 7 December that year, Thomas launched his father's company onto the share market. Thomas remain CEO of Calwhich ships until his retirement in 1982

In 2000, Calwhich had one several awards, and had become one of Australia's largest companies

Fresh and Salt Water Ships

Postby Australian rePublic » Thu Nov 10, 2016 2:43 pm

Fresh Water ships are designed to be more cost effective, but will rust in salt water, as anti-rusting technology costs more. Fresh water ships are designed to operate in rivers and lakes, with larger fresh water ships designed for very large lakes, where shipping is the most effective form of goods trade.

Salt water ships are designed to operate in water with the salinity of oceans, and are perfectly capable of operating in fresh water, so can be docked in fresh water harbours, or brought to trade in fresh water bodies, such as rivers or lakes, as well as operating in the open ocean, or salt water lakes (provided they're not overly salty, unless customed ordered)

Most ships are only available in salt water versions (unless otherwise specified), but can be operated in fresh water

Our ice breakers could be used as their own form of transportation in and of themselves, or as a method of clearing passages for other ships
All are suitable for saltwater operations
