The UEF-6 Universal Electronic Fuze is easy to describe - it is a smooth cylinder, either black or green. On one end a steel rod protrudes from the bottom of the cylinder, for insertion into the mine. This is the business end of the detonator enabling it to be inserted into any Soviet landmine that used the MUV detonator, all modern Allanean landmines using standard detonators, and in short a broad range of Soviet and allied mines from 1932 to this very day. A complete backwards compatibility with heritage designs is thus accomplished.

On the other end the mine is equipped with a cloth pull tab for the safety (to be torn off upon planting) and a small plug into which a sensor wire can be plugged in. [In this mode the mine functions as an ordinary tripwire). There is also another tab, for connecting a communication wire to a minefield management computer.

As we have noticed before, the UEF is an electronic fuse. This means that tearing the tripwire engages the mine. Attempts to tilt or move the mine, or to remove the fuze, will engage the fuze’s onboard vibration sensor (gyroscope), also causing the fuze to engage. When in communication with the Minefield Management Computer, the mine will also alert the MMC of its detonation. Alternately, the user can program the fuze to be used only in a man-in-the-loop mode, to be detonated on command (in which case tilting the mine does not detonate it).

The UEF can also communicate with a Minefield Management Computer or a Minefield Management Router wirelessly (similar to the technology used in cellular phones, but of course encrypted for military purposes). In this case the range of communications can be between 35 and 70 kilometers, depending on the range. Finally, for safety reasons, the mine self-destructs once battery voltage falls past operating levels.

The fuze has its own MAC and IP address, and can be part of a Minefield Management Network of any scope. Finally, a Minefield Management Computer or similar device can be used to set the fuze on a timer or set out more complex settings (for example, enabling the mine to only arm itself after 48 hours). The accelerometer on the fuze also enables its use as a sabotage device.

[u]Special Note:[/b] A variant of the UEF fuze that takes standard civilian micro-SIM cards is available for use by saboteur teams. This is sometimes mockingly called the iED in foreign use. In this variant, the saboteur may acquire a micro-SIM card in an enemy country for activating and detonating the device. Calling the device on its phone number detonates it on the third pulse of the phone.
