The T4D1 is a laptop designed for charitable distribution in areas of the developing world and to at-risk populations in the developed world (such as the homeless), jointly developed by Tech 4 Development, the Allanean technology and development charity, and YellowApple Inc., the technology corporation.
Some assistance for this model has also been provided by the New Dornalian Sledgehammer Networks corporation, established by “Lady” Gracie Kurimitsu, as part of Sledgehammer Networks “Hammer-capable” line of computers sourced from various companies as part of a general rollout of the sattelite internet network. THe design philosophy shared by all actors involved was to create a way for participants to produce as many computers as possible, while making them available and easy to use for residents of the developing world. The slogan of the day is - CHEAP. EASY. DURABLE.
A T4D1 laptop
The device, in its appearance, is a rather small, fairly thick contraption, designed from the ground up to be both cheap and durable, and simple to use. It is colored safety green. The keyboard is also safety green, and uses a safety membrane design to protect the keys from dust and fluids. The screen is capable of being rotated and locked in place, allowing the device to be used as a tablet as well as a laptop.
The device is equipped with several modes of Internet access. It is equipped with a transceiver chip for access for the New Dornalian free satellite Internet network, Sledgehammer Networks (allowing free, 1 MB/s access for anyone who agrees to register with the New Dornalian Sledgehammer social Network), and Wi-Fi capability, as well as being able to connect to existing 3G and 4G networks (using a SIM card).
Other devices in the T4D device family include the T4D2 Developing Area Phone (priced at $19), T4D3 Developing Area Tablet, (priced at $50 each), and T4D4 Developing Area PC (priced at $9 each). These will appear in the future.
Applications: The computer comes with several pre-installed apps, including an office suite, an app for the SledgeHammer Social Network, as well as two applications for MOOC programs, one allowing the students to take online education on the K-12 level, and the other - on the college and professional level. Any owner of a T4D computer can access these educational materials from any spot on the globe, and in this way ownership of a T4D1 (or any other T4D device, in itself constitutes educational access. Furthermore, ABC 2.0, an educational software that teaches basic Common literacy, also comes with the device.
The T4D line of devices, including the T4D1, ships with the free-and-open-source YellOS as its operating system, bringing with it a suite of secure and privacy-friendly communications applications. Built-in support for Tor and I2P is included, as well as PGP signing and encryption tools integrated tightly with the system’s Mail and SimpleText messaging apps, and all wrapped in a simple, easy-to-use graphical interface with accessibility options for those with diminished vision and motor skills. The built-in SimpleText app uses a strongly-encrypted and standardized point-to-point messaging protocol, allowing owners of T4D devices (and other devices running SimpleText or a compatible application) to send messages to one another with total privacy and confidentiality.
For users suffering from health issues that make it difficult for them to use the regular method of typing, a speech-to-text voice recognition app has been introduced into the program, known as VoiceType. Conversely, for users with a visual impairment, a text-to-speech app, ScreenReader 1.5, has been implemented in the T4D1.

Furthermore, T4D computers come with FreeWallet, a cryptocurrency application, allowing them to be used to receive and send cryptocurrencies of several common types. Finally, RivaOnline, an app for the microloan site Riva is also pre-installed. In this way, users in countries with low-quality banking services or non-existent banking services can have access to loans and a secure currency storage system, as well as means to send and receive remittance money.
