Description

The Zeus Maritime Industries Griffin-Class is a class of littoral combat ships/frigates designed to perform anti-surface, anti-submarine and even asymmetric warfare over all waters, littoral or oceanic. Originally designed with focus on littoral warfare, the Griffin-Class has evolved to become a potent oceanic frigate as well, following advancements in its variants. Due to its design philosophy, it has the speed and maneuverability of its littoral combat aspect, while keeping the strong attack ability of a true oceanic frigate. Its designs are considered similar to the American Freedom-Class Littoral Combat Ships.

Although the Griffin-Class is capable of performing an array of operations, its revolutionary features most stand out in anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare. For submarine and surface target detection, the Griffin-Class widely employs unmanned weaponry - unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), unmanned surface vehicles (USV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are the common ones. Unmanned underwater vehicles are the scouts under the surface - fitted with passive sensors, they are capable of detecting submarines and sending the data to the mothership, which, in this case, is the Griffin-Class. Its USVs have a similar role, except that they are fitted with active sensors and are armed to a limited degree (compact depth charges), meaning that they can take a more active role in striking down submarines. Rail-launched or hand-launched UAV's, unlike UUV's and USV's, are used for early detection of surface targets: flying further and more elusively than the helicopters, the UAV's are like the scouts that watch over the surface, while sending data instantly to the nearest allied ship/helicopter.

Of course, like a true surface combatant, the Griffin-Class is armed with an array of weapons to make it capable of fighting against enemy ships and submarines, while defending itself against aerial threats, if not defending others. Its primary gun, a 127 mm gun, brings naval firepower to the Griffin-Class, with a Phalanx CIWS assisting it. In addition, the Griffin-Class is armed with eight RGM-501 'Thor' missiles to bolster its anti-ship/anti-surface warfare capabilities, though it can be switched with other missiles of its size tier. For air defense, it has a SeaRAM launcher, holding 11 RIM-116 missiles. The SeaRAM can be replaced with a Vertical Launch System that holds 24 RIM-300D Sea Viper missiles, a ship-launched derivative of the AIM-300 Viper (standard on the Naval Combat variant). It is armed with light torpedoes, in order to respond to the threat of submarines.
