FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
In Protest of For-Profit Education

ATTN: The Legion International University

Today, I write this open letter as we all witness the growth of a deeply upsetting trend. For centuries, the developed world has held certain standards when it comes to educating our brightest minds. However, today, this standard has been lowered. It is my intention to draw attention to this issue so that the world will respond to it with the proper ethics and morality.

One of the most important lines in the Mission Statement of the University of Videnhagen is, "We pledge ourselves to integrity and courage in the pursuit of knowledge." This means that when it comes to teaching, learning, and researching, honesty is paramount. These activities cannot be carried out honestly if the objective is money instead of knowledge. For example, mistakes cost money in a for-profit setting. However, we all know that mistakes provide wonderful opportunity to learn. Educating tomorrow's leaders with the sole objective of profit is corrupt and dishonest; if you're just a customer, will you receive the treatment you deserve as a student?

There is also a discrepancy between what is good work and what is profitable work. Curing cancer is terrible, terrible business; it's throwing millions of dollars at something that might not even be possible. Even if it is, it is likely to be so expensive to implement, that the vast majority of people won't be able to afford it. However, this does not make this goal any less valiant. Universities should be deeply committed to the advancement of humankind. Studying economic policy in developing countries advances humankind, but there is no monetary gain attached to it. Figuring out which derivatives yield the highest returns is very profitable, but does not advance society any more than watching soap operas. The former is most definitely a more respectable use of time, but it will never be carried out at a for-profit institution.

Most importantly, a for-profit university misses the point of education. Anyone can make more money. It's not hard; work from sun up to sun down, never take time off, and devote your entire life to your salary. However, only a fool would believe that this would makes people genuinely happy. The goal of an education from a university is not to make better workers who have higher lifetime incomes. Rather, universities are meant to facilitate students in leading happy, successful lives. This is career skills married with the abilities to think, learn, teach, give, interact, and contribute. Not only do these schools build good careers, they build strong citizens and moral individuals, which is the true goal of universities.

Non-profit organizations for the advancement of individuals and society are called universities. The converse, a corporation that prepares people to work likes machines, is a ponzi scheme.

With thanks,

"A Global Education"
3rd of May, 2015

Public Address by Dr Alistair W. Hennings
Chancellor of the Legion International University

In response to "In Protest of For-Profit Education" (2nd of May, 2015)
By Mr Anders Sorensson
President of the University of Videnhagen

To the academic world and especially President Anders Sorensson of University of Videnhagen:

I'd like to begin with a very warm thanks to President Sorensson's letter to our humble institution, giving the opportunity to once again revitalize and make known the very fact that our university has stood and will always stand for in the continuous and (perhaps) shared pursuit of knowledge and wisdom for the next generation to come. It is with no doubt the University of Videnhagen is a prominent educational institution in the Socialist Republic of Vermark, and there are certain ideologies that this country and its people hold as their national values. These values are strongly influential towards the setting up of the University of Videnhagen. Such values as to the strong socialist and republicanism ideals is believed to motivated its people in the direction that benefits the nation the most.

We do not doubt your good intentions to bring forth the education policy that, in your view, benefits the next generation. However, it would be unwise to think that we want any different. It is a very subjective and serious charge to assume our differing operational model of our respective institutions has resulted in our educational policies to be any less than your institution (and blatantly ignore the possibility of it not better or improved upon yours), and by that brings me to my next point.

That is where our main differences lie, and sets the foundational basis for setting up this organization from the very beginning.

The Legion International University was founded under the mission towards a globalized learning setting. We have always believed in change and we serve as the primary example ourselves. The University's main goal is to allow our institutions as a place of nurture for internationally-minded and people-centered leaders and dreamers who are honed with practical and down-to-earth skills in their respective industries. We do not seek to defend our good name in any way, there is nothing to defend as your letter is already the most perfect example to how the University has improved and built upon the educational styles from the past.

In this day and age, it is no longer a single institute or governance system that governs the world. No one nation or person can call upon the world as its supreme leader, and it is with a collective mindset and civilized negotiations that push forward ideas that better our world. We have come to realize that only with the communal efforts of all peoples of the world that we can put forth the best ideas for the future of our humanity. Academia is no different in our pursuit of these ideas, and should adapt and change to the trends of what is required in the world today.

We understand where the University of Videnhagen is coming from, believing the academic torch should be free from all economic ties and operate as a non-profit organization for the world. We have studied your operating style before we begun, and through that we seek to look beyond these meagre circumstances of what appears to motivate our institution.

This era that we are in, an era of commercial importance, an era of marketing and an era of globalization, is something that cannot be changed at the present. Any organization, be it educational or otherwise, should adapt into the trend and seek to change for the future. Those who are stubborn to change will eventually find themselves falling behind in this fast-paced society that we are in. The world waits for no one, and it makes no exceptions. To fight against the tides is fighting on the wrong side.

We, as this brand new organization sees the spread of knowledge done most smoothly through our operating model, and as you have seen we have over 10 universities worldwide in various nations, with a wide variety of industry partners and leaders on board our program. As suited to continual change, we have therefore closed down the Plackett Liberal Arts College and reopened it as the Plackett Academy of Engineering.

We will tell you straight up, we are not one for fundamental education in liberal arts, and we will gladly leave this aspect to those who seek this development, and we duly respect you for that. However, it is dead wrong of you, in your position as President of a university, to criticize a fellow educational institution who shares the same goal of bringing education to the masses, on the sole basis that it does things differently from yours. Don't you think it is a tad bit rash in hindsight? Let's be practical, in order to change the world, doesn't it have to be sustainable? A non-profit organization like universities of the past rely heavily on the funding of donors from big corporations and governments who have their own ideals and goals to push for. Do you think that relying on foreign donors is the solution to the problem? The University of Videnhagen has proven itself against its point, seeking the donations and endowments from other corporate organizations in the market of today, and with that, do you see the vulnerability of educational policies to be dictated by business ideals and commercial priorities as such? In comparison to a self-sustainable education system of the Legion International University, with the ethics and moral values to stand as one honest corporate leader in the market, and imposing a strict discipine and educational protocol for our students to follow?

We will not follow the mistaken footsteps of said university with an uncivilized protest that aims to break down and abolish the remaining few institutions who seek to leave a legacy on our generations to come, as we can so easily to that. But we have to understand where our position in the community comes into play, and with that it is with no doubt that the Legion Corporation balances this aspect with great detail and care. The conglomerate have done our fair share of accusations and protest on the corporate and business levels in our own term and operating methods, and we know strongly that we will stand not to do the same as it is inappropriate for our education division to do so.

An education is a exemplification of a role model for our future generations. To change the world, you must be willing to change yourself. Not once have we doubted our stand towards a change, and as ironic as it sounds, that same stand will be open for consideration should there be any arguments that can better our current model.

We do not seek to win you with our arguments and impose it strongly on you as you have done on us, but on the flip-side, encourage you to challenge our model even further. That is the only way education and ideas for development of our humanity can continue to prosper into success. We do not say that our educational model is the best, but it is one that has proven time and again to be more successful in terms of sustainability for our institution to continue operating, the sustainability for historical wisdom to be worked and researched upon, and the sustainability for our children of tomorrow to build upon our legacies towards protecting the existence of mankind in the many years to come.

On behalf of my university, and its associates, we look forward to hearing back from you.

Greetings! The Legion International University is a global higher education provider owned by The Legion Corporation. I am Dr Alistair Hennings, Chancellor of the Legion International University, and am writing to you today regarding a proposal to collaborate! The University operates a relatively new way of role-playing, which aims towards connecting major industry leaders to become partners of our colleges and schools within the University. The aim of our institution is to nurture the next generation, to educate and pass on to them skills that are practical in the international market. We believe in down-to-earth realistic skill sets and being global-mindedness. We want to nurture students who can create and develop new ideas and concepts to lead the industries of tomorrow. At the same time, we can promise our partners in the industry the continual surge of talented professionals to join their organizations.

The Legion International University is building its institutions worldwide at the same time and we are contacting international market experts to join us!

Our institution operates under a new education system called the Legion International Education Standards Certification Program, an official certification provided by all Legion International Universities worldwide for higher education. The program is highly regulated by the Board of the L.I. University and the Ministry of Community of the Recon Empire. With strict mandates to curriculum and student development, it offers personalized learning and efficient certification at every level from Undergraduate up to Terminal degrees.

The Majesty Hotel has proven time and again the track record towards hospitality and customer service. It is with no wonder that the Majesty Hotel still stands so successful in the market today. We are very interested in having you as a partner to The Kohler Institute of Economics and Business. The Kohler Institute of Economics and Business is the foundational school for every Legion University worldwide. Providing its students with core essentials to management, marketing, and other aspects of business administration and economics, the Kohler Institute of Economics and Business breeds sharp-minded entrepreneurs and market trendsetters. We sincerely hope that the Majestic Hotel can provide this great opportunity for us to receive your organization's veteran guidance and at the same time an opportunity for our graduates to be employed at your company in the areas of management and business administration.

By being a partner of the University, it shows the support and recognition for our certification, and at the same time offers our students internship opportunities within your company! As the employment for GE&T businesses have not really been taken care for, this is a brilliant opportunity for us to address these RP aspects. It also provides us an opportunity for a deeper level of roleplaying in the future! Furthermore, as the Legion International University is not a single university, but is adapted into different countries all around the world, it provides a holistic and objective approach towards providing a professional and diverse employment. If you'd like, we're even happier to construct a university in your nation for your people!

Regardless, it would be a great honour to have such an esteemed partner to come on board on this mutually beneficial venture! We welcome you to visit our storefront to find out more about our organization!

As the Legion International University hopes to serve as a bridge and connecting point for different industries, at the same time we also seek your understanding in areas of improvement! We are very open to feedback on our current systems, and would be extremely grateful if you could provide us with feedback and suggestions so we can continue to grow and improve along!

With our greatest sincerity and respect, we look forward to your correspondences. Thank you very much.

Dr Alistair Hennings
Chancellor of the Legion International University,

The Legion Corporation,

Dear Dr Hennings,

Please allow me to thank-you for your interest in Majestic Hotel and Majestic Corporation. I am writing on behalf of the Corporation's Board of Executives, in response to your proposal for a collaborative project between Majestic Hotel and The Legion International University.

After careful discussion and consideration with Majestic Corporation Board of Executives and reviewing our current international projects abroad, we have come to a decision. I am pleased to say that the Board of Executives have voted to accept your proposal to collaborate. Further to this, we are happy to place 150 students on a paid internship, with the opportunity to work at different levels throughout the hotel staff structure. In order to do this with the upmost benefit of the students, we have allocated $2.7 Million to pay for the internships, which is an estimated $18,000 salary for a one year period. Majestic hotel will further allocate $1 Million for travel to and from the Majestic Hotels and accommodation (excluding food and bills), and would ask that the University match this commitment for their students.

We are extremely interested this project, and believe that it can of great benefit to both of our causes, and we look forward to hearing from you soon, with detailed plans of the project, so we might implement them with haste to launch the programme.

Please allow me to thank-you once again for your interest in the Majestic Corporation.

Yours Sincerely,

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Re: A Global Education

Mr Alistair Weatherby Hennings:

Thank you for your quick reply. I hope our discourse can shed light on this issue and spread information widely to those of the world who need it most.

First and foremost, I would like to point out one thing. The full title for my home nation is not the Socialist Republic of Vermark; rather, it is the Social Republic of Vermark. Vermark is not a socialist state. The social aspect of the name comes from the political and cultural identity Vermark has that values people and their position in society. Rather than being focused on an economic ideology (socialist), Vermark is centered around the advancement and protection of society at-large, as evidenced by the welfare state and the culture of social trust and individualism.

However, it is okay. You made a mistake. Mistakes combust to fuel learning, like petroleum combusts to fuel automobiles. However, the acceptance of mistakes is a lot more prevalent at my institution than at yours. Why? Profit-based organizations value money over all else. Mistake, by their nature, cost money. Therefore, mistakes are frowned upon; they come out of your pay check, get you yelled at, fired, and cause headaches. At the University of Videnhagen, a mistake earns you a low grade on an assignment, however, there is always another assignment and an assurance that the same mistake won't be replicated. Mistakes are the cornerstones of learning, but try to telling that to someone at a for-profit college.

I agree with a lot of things you say. We are in an, "era of commercial importance, an era of marketing and an era of globalization." Our teaching must cater to the needs of the integrated world as well as all of the cutting edge developments that occur in this day and age. However, we must differentiate what is a change and what is a fad. The digitization of the world is definitely a change; thus, we have invested large sums of money in computer programming and engineering programs. Yet, the idea that the only skills that are important are skills attached to a monetary value is a fad. Soon enough, there is going to a be a lot of rich people, who are deeply unhappy, and we will realize that the culture of materialism is not something we should embrace. The point is, we agree that education must adapt to the world around it, but we must be careful when it comes to selecting how we go about this evolution.

One of your main premises was that the University of Videnhagen is unsustainable. Unlike your perspective on globalization, I could not agree less. Education is a timeless institution. Society will support it regardless of whether or not it is cost-effective. This is because education will always be something that society revolves around. Education perfects the fabric of modern society: the human mind. Education's benefits are wide and many, as you know. Thus, there is little question that society will support and sustain it in the years to come.

There are two fundamental issues with the existence of for-profit universities. First, is a conflict of interest issue. You claim to be an organization committed to, "bringing education to the masses," yet I do not think you understand that you are not fooling anybody, at least not me. Let's use the petroleum analogy once again. Petroleum is intended to fuel automobiles, however, it produces carbon dioxide as an unintended side effect. So, the Legion International University does bring education to many people, however, this is not its primary goal. As a subsidiary of the massive Legion Corporation, generating revenue is its chief objective, similar to the propulsion of a vehicle. Educating the public, is a byproduct of this, like the exhaust. It is unfair that the Legion International University market itself as a place that seeks to promote education when it is, at its core, motivated by finances. Be committed to your students or be committed to your check book. Don't claim to be committed to both.

Secondly, your teaching approach is flawed. Limiting your offerings is not a logical solution to a broadening world. For example, ending your liberal arts program was a terrible mistake. First, the belief that the liberal arts do not possess marketable skills is a gargantuan misconception. The liberal arts teach thinking, reading, writing, and learning. In the long run, these skills are far more valuable than say, coding, because while a programming language becomes outdated, the ability to articulate oneself and solve problems will last for an entire career. Moreover, successful companies do not succeed by purely having a good product; these companies are able to convince the public of what makes their product important. To do this, fields such as philosophy, art, and psychology are brought into play. The latest telephone is not sold with the specification of its graphics card, it is sold by ability it has to improve the livelihood of its purchaser.

More importantly, as I stated in the initial letter, education should not, and does not, aim to make people richer. Mr. Hennings, I ask you, and the rest of those reading this, to visualize your funeral. What will your family say about you? Will they talk about your promotions? your bonuses? how valuable you were to your bosses? You certainly hope not. I, at least, hope to be remembered as someone who was caring, understanding, honest, and genuine. This is what abstract education aims to do, and this is where the Legion International University misses the mark.

With thanks,

OCC: Sorry but I don't have the energy to make a clever IC portion to this post. At least not right now anyways. For for now, this will all be applications. I liked reading through and I think you did a very excellent job on this thread. I had a similar idea once to this kind of idea (sort of a education thing, but im going to not specify because I my or may not become interested in it later on) and I think you saw the same cornerstone that I imagined. Again, really great job done on here and I hope my applications help out!

"Moving Ahead"
8th of May, 2015

Public Address by Dr Alistair W. Hennings
Chancellor of the Legion International University

To President Anders Sorensson of University of Videnhagen:

As the admissions offices prepare for our second admission period in June, we do apologize for the lack of response on our part during this time.

A very warm thanks to President Sorensson for responding to our previous correspondences. Once again, we see another example of what we are changing from, which encourages the Legion International University to continue what we have always done in our school's mission, to provide this global education. The Legion International University understands that change is a difficult process, and there will always be schools who choose to remain conservative in your approach to education. However, we will not confront this issue as it is a private institution, and you, as President, have every right to how you wish to run your institution.

We do not worry, as education will change in time, and schools worldwide will take their own pace in evolving into the needs of the world. The Legion International University is extremely happy and honoured to spearhead this change, leading fellow universities like yours into joining this new era of education and global-mindedness.

Thanks to the University of Videnhagen, the Legion International University's vision and mission is enforced by your leading example, and we believe that in time whichever education system works will be evident. The LIU would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the immense support by our partners and associates who have chosen to stand with us as a result of our correspondences.

We look forward to embracing differences during this time, as we work together in providing committed education despite our separate paths.

To the Majestic Hotel:

The Legion Corporation,
Recon Empire

Dear Chancellor Hennings--

Your school has recently been brought to our attention, and we are please to be offering you a proposal to continue your educational work in Ceneria. While Whiteclyff is not the capital of Ceneria, it boasts being the country's oldest city and longest inhabited place in the nation. It is the capital of Glacia region, and home to the headquarters of some of the most prestigious organizations in the world. It is a mere hour away by aircraft from Alpine, Ceneria's capital, and less than an hour by rail or road to some of the world's best skiing and other outdoor activities.

So, it is with pride that we offer you this chance to educate the young men and women of Ceneria. We hope to hear of your response soon!

Thank you for your time,
Franklin James Greyhelm, Mayor of the City of Whiteclyff, Ceneria.

To: Dr Alistair Hennings; Chancellor, Legion Defense College/The Legion International University, The Recon Empire
From: General Nelson Tell, Managing Board Member, NSPMC Guild

Chancellor Hennings,

Thank you for contacting us. We have carefully reviewed your proposal after a bit of hiatus due to board members various PMCs' being involved in some difficult contracts. We are sorry but some of the delay was in deciphering some items that we didn't understand - 'RP', 'roleplay', 'GE&T'??
Ultimately, we decided to look past these mind boggling terms at the spirit of your letter, assuming these were special training terms. I think that I can at least speak for some of us, in the very least, the USG Security Corporation, in saying that we are most willing to work with your higher learning institution in providing advisement and training in the art of defense and security to both your nation's soldiers and others across the globe at branch locations.

We are also keen on seeing some of our officer candidates come from your institution with a greater strategic sense than they may get through their own nation's armed forces, in order that they would have an edge up when taking our advanced courses towards being a leader in our elite outfit.

As to establishing a branch university in our nation, our PMC is stateless, with an island for an HQ that is claimed by no actual nation. Establishing a university on the island is not entirely feasible due to tight quarters, but we shall still consider it.
Some other PMC members of the Guild are in a similar situation, or have tight restrictions put on their operations by their host nations.

Despite these obstacles, it is certain that we would be able to participate in your program and partner with your institution in some manner or another. Thank you again for contacting us and we look forward to pushing this partnership forward. We will be in touch.

Sincerely,

General Nelson Tell, USG Security Corporation/Regiments;
Managing Board Member, NS PMC Guild HQ

Not crazy about the unclear delineation between OOC and IC as I tried to portray ICly in the letter, but I get the gist of it and I think that other Guild members are on board, too.

"To Reach Further and Beyond"

Addressed to Dr Alistair W. Hennings (otherwise to whom it may concern)
From the TAAS Administration

Dear Reader,

As you know very well, the Tolmakian government has recently taken note in your exceptional university and its proficient schools. With the TMOD now associated with the Legion International University, the TAAS wishes to follow in its footsteps (and of many other organizations as well), and to become a partner (specifically with The von Biber Institute of Science and Technology and The Plackett Academy of Engineering).

While the TAAS has experienced many successes and milestones in its history worth sharing (some examples being its triumph in launching its first Lunar satellite last year, and in utilizing and promoting the use of cutting-edge aircraft), it still has a long path ahead of it to tread in order to complete its many programs, and achieve its ultimate goal of exploring the reaches of outer space and other worlds, as well as searching for viable sustainable methods of transportation for the near future. The TAAS hopes that it can work together with these schools to improve its understanding of technology, and to fulfill its objectives.

Additionally, we here at the agency look forward on contributing and helping in any way we can to encourage mutual benefit from each other. I write this letter on behalf of all my colleagues, and for myself too. We eagerly await your reply, and appreciate you for your time in considering our proposal!

To Ms Kathy Cameron, Tolmakia:

Greetings! The Legion International University is excited to announce that the University of Greater Saltbridge has been approved as a partner to the The Plackett Academy of Engineering and the von Biber Institute of Science and Technology! The Plackett Academy of Engineering is a remodelled school to cater to the growing needs of engineering. From aerospace and naval to structural and electronic engineering, the demand for engineering has never been greater. This has led to the early dissolution of the Plackett Liberal Arts College and its courses derivated to other schools. The Plackett Academy of Engineering therefore aids the growing demand for engineering at the von Biber Institute, and puts forth a new curriculum dedicated to engineers of different fields. The Plackett Academy of Engineering was named after Dr James Plackett, a notable mathematician.

The von Biber Institute of Science and Technology is one of the Recon Empire's top scientific institutions, covering aspects of natural sciences to astro technology. It has been rated as one of the best in the world, and its alumni have made significant breakthroughs in the scientific community of the Recon Empire and worldwide. It is named after Minister Vincent von Biber, the current Minister of Science and Technology of the Recon Empire. Formally named the "von Biber Institute of Science, Engineering and Technology", the growing need for engineering has been dedicated by the Plackett Academy of Engineering.

We look forward to working even closer with you in the future to ensure our education policy fits your organization's needs and requirements. We'd also like to invite a representative o your organization to our annual Partner's Dinner to thank you for your support of our institution.
