The AGM-7 Arrow is a long-range, all-weather, supersonic strike missile capable of performing Anti-Ship and Cruise Missile duties named after the historical projectile. Produced and designed by Halcyon Arms as the first major indigenous cruise missile to the Meritocracy of Pharthan, it is the fourth iteration of the attempts at making such a missile. While it was initially designed to be an air-launched weapon, versions of it are able to also be launched from ships, and a long-range build is also available.
The AGM-7 Arrow spawned the initial likeness of a large majority of Pharthanian missiles; a long, box-like body with curved edges and a wider ventral base than dorsal section, culminating at the tip in a stealthy sensory nose-cone, with the tail tapered off to improve high-speed flight. It also features winglets that extend after launch, which then fold back in prior to impact. The stealthy nose-cone was not originally intended to make a stealth-cruise missile, rather, it was meant to function as a lift-producing body to improve range, but was soon molded further into giving the missile a smaller Radar Cross Section, allowing it to go undetected for considerably longer than a standard anti-ship or cruise missile. At 16 feet in length it is a considerably long cruise missile, and much of this length is owed to extra fuel space. Attached boosters wrap around the tail section, preventing lengthening the missile any further.
Originally designed to combat mobile hard targets and immobile hard targets, the Arrow has been adapted to also accommodate payloads and sensory packages to perform effective kills against soft targets and maritime targets. Warheads available include thermobaric, area-denial, anti-personnel/anti-vehicle infrared-seeking cluster submunitions, unitary anti-maritime, nuclear, multi-staged warheads, delayed or sensor-fused weaponry and more. The warhead package is designed to be swapped as necessary, allowing for a fully modular weapon.
While not impervious to EMP, the Arrow utilizes EMP hardened systems and EMP resistant circuitry. Provided a loss of input, can switch to secondary and tertiary forms of guidance.
Operation:
The Arrow is initially launched, either by ship, land-based launcher, or aircraft, and begins it's pre-programmed flight. Against less technologically advanced targets, this often involves a powered or free-glide flight directly to the target, to make maximum use of any altitude granted by the method of launch, and to avoid ground clutter. Against a maritime or more hardened enemy, the Arrow can be programmed to begin terrain-following, to include avoidance of pre-programmed enemy threats to the missile, which can also be provided actively via a data-link. The missile can also be allowed to take it's own safest route around these obstacles, though these alternate routes can shorten the overall operational range of the weapon in avoidance measures. However, this also improves greatly upon the stealth capabilities of the Arrow, in radar-avoidance. All variants include a short-ranged radar suite in the nose such that all missiles are able to perform terrain-following flight patterns. Thanks to vectored thrust, the Arrow can make considerably tighter turns than any aircraft and indeed many missiles that might attempt to intercept it, at the cost of fuel and therefore range.
In the event of an interception, the Arrow will determine it's range to target and availability of maneuvering in an attempt to actively avoid incoming fire. It may go so far as the change it's entire route to present a less promising or even stealthier side to the target missile, based on whether or not it is detected that the missile is radar or infrared seeking, or guided by a remote control station. The AGM-7 may even fold in it's wings to present a less attractive RCS. If it does not have enough fuel to provide extensive active avoidance, it may begin a series of randomized jukes and rolls to avoid intercepting fire. In the event of a multi-pronged attach, multiple Arrows or similar Halcyon Arms missiles may "talk" to one another, given they are within line-of-sight, to even "sacrifice" some of the missiles as necessary to provide a maximum overall mission-kill percentage.
Prior to strike the standard protocol for the Arrow is to fold in it's winglets; the common distance for this is 14 nautical miles, preventing ground based radar at the target site from spotting the missile as it flies towards the target. Depending on the target, the missile may enter a dive towards the target or a low-level flight, or any variation thereof, in order to achieve maximum - or minimum, if necessary - damage. For maritime targets, this often includes a short dive below the waterline to strike at a submerged portion of the hull to inflict maximum damage.
