HELSINGBERG - The demise of Skyway Airlines came swiftly and suddenly in July 2014. Citing mounting operating costs and running a deficit six years in the running, over 10,000 people were left unemployed as the largest airline serving Vandelstein shut down its counters and grounded its entire fleet. Passengers numbering in the thousands were left stranded , unable to refund their tickets or rebook their flights. The shutdown also occurred at a time when a trio of back-to-back disasters hit the airline, severely affecting passenger numbers and public confidence in the company.
Almost six months later after a government bailout, a massive overhaul of systems, and the selling of excess assets, Skyway Airlines is poised once again to take to the skies. With a healthy capital of 50 billion Vandelstein Grants by the government and investors, new life has been injected into a company once famous for its unwavering commitment to care for its employees and customers. "It's a great thing to see the Crimson Swans flying again," says former Skyway flight attendant Christopher Bach, referring to the nickname employees bestowed upon the company's aircraft. "You know what else is great? I'm employed again!"
Of the thousands left unemployed by the airline's closure, many are returning once again, eager to help in the revival of their beloved workplace. Anneliese Baumann, who once worked at the airlines main operation center, had this to say. "I worked at Skyway for over 10 years. It was such a great shock for all of us when Mr. Brandon (former CEO of Skyway Airlines) announced we were shutting down everything. I don't think there wasn't anyone who didn't cry that day. But now my airline's back, I'll make sure I do my best so that we won't lose it again. Everyone does." Even former Skyway Airlines employees who now worked at VanAir - once the company's biggest rival - were thrilled by the news. A former Skyway flight attendant, who now works for VanAir and chose to remain anonymous, said, "Once my contract's done here, I'm going back. I miss the bond we all shared and the happiness I felt whenever I was working flights with my friends. I also miss those red heels." VanAir CEO Graham Lykes was also thrilled. "I was hoping they'd come back. I was good friends with Martin [Brandon] and our airlines had a healthy, competitive relationship...The Skyway - VanAir rivalry is back!"
To mark its comeback, Skyway Airlines has reinstated some of its most popular routes - restoring services to Alebcay, Kington Langley, and Romberg, among others. Patrons of the airline before it went under started booking the moment flights became available. "It's like flying for the first time again!" says passenger Elise Holst, "I have nothing but good memories with this airline before it stopped flying. Now, I'm looking forward to more good memories." A festive gala celebrating the return of the airline is also scheduled to be held at Helsingberg International Airport on Saturday. The gala will culminate in a special, cross-country flight for 120 lucky guests who will get to visit the domestic destinations Skyway once served from its Helsingberg hub. Regular passenger service is slated to begin on Monday, January 12, 2014.
At a press conference held at Skyway Airlines' headquarters, newly-appointed CEO Elisabeth Holtzer said, "We want to make a statement that Skyway is back. We're back and we're staying."
- Engel Janz, Vandelstein Chronicle
We are pleased to announce that guests who have accumulated frequent flyer miles prior to Skyway Airlines' shutdown in July 2014 will now have their miles integrated with Celebrity - our new frequent flyer program. Guests with accumulated miles may exchange their old Skyway Club cards or apply for new Celebrity Club cards. Guests who have also held Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond status under the old Skyway Airlines will be immediately awarded with the new frequent flyer status equivalent to their past status. Skyway Airlines will be sending out emails to the relevant guests, who may choose to have their Celebrity Club cards delivered to their homes or picked up at the airport or any of our ticket offices in Helsingberg or Concordia. Guests may also choose to have their cards cancelled by sending us a notice via email or personal appearance.
