Background:

For a long while, the Allanean Armed Forces utilized variants of the Lyran Arms LY300 Manticore MLRS system. This system has been used by Allaneans in the Second Freemen’s Crusade, the Spirean-Nefreedian conflict, as well as the Taros Islands conflict. The Allaneans have always been satisfied by the firepower of the LY300, and its ability to be modified in the field to fire 220mm rockets, anti-ship missiles and even long-range cruise missiles by simply lifting out one rocket pod and fitting in another. Allanean Arms, Inc. had even developed and supplied the armed forces with a long-range ATGM to be fired from the 220mm rocket pod - the Mercury multipurpose missile.

Still, the Manticore had one powerful disadvantage. It used a tank chassis. The chassis was extremely heavy - the vehicle weighing more than seventy-two tons loaded, twenty-two tons more than the main-battle tank in current use by the Free Kingdom Armed Forces, the T-95, and fifty-two tons heavier than the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. Moreover, the Manticore required the same maintenance cycle as a tank - its weekly maintenance cycle required the crew to spent eight hours or more to maintain, leaving them drained and inflicting various health damage, such as stress fractures and torn muscles.

To reduce the maintenance cycle on the vehicle, Allanean Arms proposed the use of its MAF-625 truck body - a heavy tank transporter truck produced at the Minograd Automotive Factory - to carry the extremely heavy rocket LY4072 LRM pods. The first prototypes faced some difficulty - the LRM pods were either posed too far back, causing the vehicle to fishtail in tight turns, or too high, causing it to flip over due to a high set center of gravity - but eventually, Allanean Arms decided to create a chassis where the base of the launcher was weighed down somewhat (by means of making a hardier launcher base), which made the vehicle more stable, finally giving the world the AA-30 Whirlwind.

After combat use of the AA-30 Whirlwind, several changes had to be made. First, it soon transpired that the standard crane supplied with the vehicle had insufficient power to reliably reload it. Second, a variety of armaments were soon developed that could be used with the standard series of rocket pods.

Armament and Ammunition:

As mentioned above, the AA-30 Whirlwind utilizes the LY4072 rocket pods. Just like any other system using the LY4072, the WHirlwind is reloaded by having the two LY4072 pods lifted into place using a 30-ton-capacity crane/reloading vehicle (also utilizing the MAF-525 chassis). This use of the LY4072 rocket pods in their various modifications allows users to utilize both the MLRS rockets and long-range missiles that are available for the Lyran Arms systems using these missiles.

In the same manner, compatible rocket pods can also be lifted in place and armament. For example, it is possible to launch cruise missiles from the AA-30 [i]Whirlwind using a compatible, lengthened LY4072-L rocket pod. (Capable of launching up to 14 533mm cruise missiles similar to the Lyran Arms Hellion). However, Allanean Arms wishes to stress that the missile pod would weight more than 25 tons loaded. Serious care must be executed when performing road marches with the pod, and movement while the pod is elevated is against safety regulations in the Free Kingdom Armed Forces.

The standard armament of the Whirlwind MLRS are the following variants of weaponry:

The primary armament of the Manticore is, not surprisingly, its two LY4072 rocket launcher pods. The pods are held at the horizontal for movement and transport, and are raised into firing position by two supporting arms, which are themselves connected to turrets located at the front and rear of the vehicle.
The LY4072 was originally designed to carry thirty 220mm unguided solid -fuel thermobaric rockets, the entirety of which can be fired within 5 seconds. Now the suite of available munitions is substantially larger, with conventional, cluster munitions or deployable minefield munitions also able to be utilised. Further, with the acceleration of Lyran and Allanean efforts towards accuracy of firepower delivery and computational miniaturization, stocks of unguided rockets are in sharp decline, replaced by those guided by a combination of inertial navigation and GPS uplink.

Individual rocket specifications
Caliber: 220 mm (8.8 in)
Length: 4 m (13.33 ft)
Motor: Solid-fuel rocket

LY 4040 (Unguided Thermobaric)
Weight: 312 kg
Unguided
Maximum range: 55 km
Warhead: Thermobaric

LY 4041 (Unguided Conventional)
Weight: 302 kg
Unguided
Maximum range: 85 km
Warhead: 512 x HEDP submunitions

LY 4042 (Guided Conventional)
Weight: 308 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 75 km
Warhead: 612 x HEDP submunitions

LY 4043 (Guided Thermobaric)
Weight: 310 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 70 km
Warhead: Thermobaric

LY 4044 (Remotely deployed minefield)
Weight: 325 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 45 km
Warhead: 32 AT mines

Beyond these standard Lyran-licensed products, Allanean Arms has made available the following armaments for the AA-30 (and all compatible artillery systems):

AA 4059 (Anti-Personnel Minefield)
Weight: 325 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 55 km
Warhead: 50 tripwire-activated anti-personnel mines.

The AA 4059 rocket delivers plastic-bodied anti-personnel mines. As they are deployed from the rocket, the mines unfold small plastic winglets to slow their fall to the ground, and upon impact each mine deploys 4 wires, which form the triggering mechanisms of the mine. Catching on the wire and pulling it will detonate the mine. The mines can be equipped with self-destruct and/or antihandling devices.

AA 4060 (Anti-Diver Munition)
Weight: 325 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 45 km
Warhead: 100 anti-personnel depth-charges.

For protection of harbors and other oceanic facilities from divers, the Free Kingdom has commissioned this unique munition. A single AA 4060 rocket carries 100 miniature depth-charges, each approximately 600 grams in weight, programmed to detonate at various depths to maximize the probability of engagement of a diver. As the individual depth charges have a lethal radius of 14 meters, the full launch of 60 rockets is likely to cover 684,000 cubic meters or more.

GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb)
Weight: 272 kg
Length: 391 cm
Range: 150 km
Guidance: GPS/INS,synthetic aperture radar.

This is a conversion from existing stockpiles of Small Diameter Bombs. Equipped with folding gliding fins, the SDB munition can engage targets at 360 degrees around the launcher, be programmed with a complex approach pattern, penetrate bunkers, and strike soft-skinned and hard-skinned targets like tanks, warships, etc.

We are proud to say that this is perhaps one of our most useful products. Combined with the fast reload capacity of the LY4072 rocket pod, the GLSDB allows a small group of MLRS launchers to engage large landing forces, making them an indispensable anti-landing asset.

AA-6458 Lightning Bolt Nuclear Munition

Weight: 300 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 100 km
Warhead: Dialable yield 0.1-kt-50 kt

This is a nuclear weapon for firing from the Manticore and AA-30 MLRS, and all compatible launchers. DPR for the Lightning Bolt is not sold automatically with the system, and is available only to allies of the Free Kingdom. DPR for the Lightning Bolt is also avaliable, free of charge, for Lyras, Holy Marsh, and Lamoni. For other partners it is available for 30 billion Universal Standard Dollars.

One final armament compatible with the Whirlwind and Manticore missile systems is the MGM-240 Archer, produced by Syndicate Defense Industries. Allanean Arms produces a protected rocket pod coupling (similar to the LY4072 pods), capable of carrying a total of 10 MGM-240 Archer missiles. These are available either in a unitary penetrator variant, or carrying 250 DPICM munitions, or 50 anti-tank submunitions. DPR must be negotiated for separately.

Weight: 700 kg
Guidance: GPS/INS
Maximum range: 500 km
Warhead: Unitary penetrator/DPICM/ant-tank submunitions.

Crew Comfort Systems: The vehicle is equipped with the crew comfort systems common to civilian trucks - an air conditioner, a media entertainment system, and a small food fridge. It is also NBC proof.

Variants:

The weapons system is comprised of the following vehicles:

AA30LV - Launch vehicle
AA30TL-X - Transloader vehicle
AA30CCHQ - Command and Control Headquarters
MTO-V - Maintenance Vehicle
