Pijl-class Arsenal Ship - Free Republic of Lamoni

Image

---

The Pijl (Dutch for Arrow) program began when it was learned that the Protectorate of Lyras was working on it's own arsenal ship. During the design and construction period of the Pijl, numerous other Arsenal Ships either had already been or were being put to sea. The threat of Lamonian carrier battlegroups being overwhelmed by waves of enemy missiles was made even more real with the rush of construction of this type of ship. The Pijl is designed to counter this menace by supplying Lamonian and Lamonian-aligned naval formations with massive (SAM, SSM, or AShM) missile saturation bombardment capabilities as well as showing the flag missions, and a deterrent role.

The massive amount of firepower packed into such a ship means that it will always need the protection of other friendly ships and aircraft, as one enemy hit can potentially create a truly massive explosion. Lamonian Naval doctrine therefore explicitly states that the Pijl class ship must always have friendly sea and air units escorting it.

The Pijl is powered by two Pressurized Water Nuclear Reactors, giving it global range; which power two Supercavitating Propellers with 118,000 shaft horsepower. This gives the Pijl a maximum sprint speed of 33 knots, and a maximum sustained speed of 30 knots.

The Pijl carries 50 10-cell Mk.41 Vertical Launch System cells, each capable of holding up to a BGM-109 Tomahawk Cruise Missile or Hellion/Hellion 2 . In addition, the Pijl boasts one forward mounted 5 inch/54 caliber Mk.45 naval gun. For limited self defense capabilities, the Pijl boasts two Goalkeeper CIWS weapons, as well as four MK-49 Guided Missile Launching System (GMLS) launchers for RIM-116 Rolling Airframe missiles which are also intended for the CIWS role, but which can also be used as anti-ship missiles in an emergency.

The Pijl is highly automated, allowing for a crew consisting of 10 officers and 40 crew. While the Pijl does not carry it's own radar, it does have a Naval Data Link, which inputs the sensory information from all friendly units in range into a computer, which can be used to target the missile armament. The Data Link uses Lasers communications in order to assure radio silence, but usage of the system in stormy areas is not advised. Similarly, the lasers cannot penetrate through solid objects. For this reason, there is also a backup radio link, but this can be dangerous to use with enemy forces in the area. If used correctly, this ship's weapons can destroy enemy naval fleets, enemy air raids, or cause dramatic destruction on land.

Mokastana: Then Lyras happened.

Allanea: Wanting to avoid fighting Lyras' fuck-huge military is also a reasonable IC consideration

TPF: Who is stupid enough to attack a Lyran convoy?

Sumer: Honestly, I'd rather face Doom's military with Doom having a 3-1 advantage over me, than take a 1-1 fight with a well-supplied Lyran tank unit.

Kinsgard: RL Lyras is like a real life video game character.

Ieperithem: Eighty four. Eighty four percent of their terrifyingly massive GDP goes directly into their military. And they actually know how to manage it. It's safe to say there isn't a single nation that could feasibly stand against them if they wanted it to die.
Yikes. Just... Yikes.

OOC: Dude, that image was of a navy concept to invent a modern "battleship" or "missileship" during the mid 80s I recall...
