Fusion Electric Drive Locomotives (Generation 1)

Postby Gear 1 » Sun Mar 23, 2014 10:55 am

The following series of locomotives for the GEAR 1 railway network were designed by Inter-Global Industries with the assistance of the Federation Department of Fusion Energy as a means to break away from large scale dependence on fossil fuel sources and metropolitan electricity generation to power rail vehicles. Switching to self contained fusion energy will allow extremely long lifespans of the locomotives, elimination of third rail and overhead power as used by electric locomotives (thus allowing seamless local and intercity travel), and highly improved returns on investment.

Inter-Global PPB-1 Retrofit (Passenger Power Booster) - Highlands and Coastal Railroad
Older fossil fueled "B Units" withdrawn from general service were retrofit with fusion batteries and electric axle drives. Coupled into passenger trains, the boosters provide train-line power without drawing from the motive power. In emergencies, these older boosters can provide up to 2,500 additional horsepower and supplement the tractive force when "multiple unit" connected to the head end locomotive's control. Available in limited quantities because the carbodies are no longer being manufactured.

Fossil Fuels to Fusion Conversions

Postby Gear 1 » Sat Mar 29, 2014 1:21 pm

A variety of older models of locomotives have been withdrawn from service and sent back to Inter-Global Industries for fusion conversion. Some were returned to service with their owning railroads, while others have either been retained by Inter-Global as collateral to pay for the upgrades, or as patterns for new build locomotives with fusion-electric drivelines.

General Service 40 (GS40) - Military Transportation Service, Center City Capitol Region Transportation Authority (CCCRTA) and others
One of the most popular and numerous models in service, the GS40 has seen service on almost all commercial and Federation-operated transportation networks. Rated at 4,000 horsepower in fossil fuel (diesel oil fired) form, the fusion-electric units are capable of 5,500 total hp.
Image
Image

General Service 70 (GS70) - Federation Railway Express Joint Operating Partnership and Portage Delivery Service - Purple Zephyr LLC
The part government-owned and part private FEDRAIL (FEDX) took initial delivery of five Inter-Global GS70 streamlined locomotives for long-distance intercity passenger service. This class of locomotive has served in both passenger and freight service on many long-distance networks. Rated for 7,000 horsepower, the fusion upgrades bring it to 8,500 total hp. The GS70 gained fame as the head end power of the Purple Zephyr, an all-first-class intercity train service.

Image

Special Duty 45 (SD45) - Center City Capital Regional Transportation Authority CCCRTA, the "Grape Ape"
Special Duty 45 "hood units" were designed for heavy work in hill country and for pulling long industrial drags and unit trains. Rated for 4,500 horsepower, their fusion-electric upgrade gives them 6,000 total hp. One example pictured is the sole unit owned by the CCCRTA, which serves as a yard hack and recovery locomotive to retrieve malfunctioning locomotives or equipment on the metropolitan high speed commuter rail and subway system. RailGo Transportation Services of GEAR 1 utilizes a fair sized fleet of SD45 fusion units for freight services on selected routes within their system, and is considered the largest current operator of the type.

Image

Gravesend Heavy Manufacturing Class 1 - Center City Capital Regional Transportation Authority (CCCRTA), Highlands and Coastal Railway, and others
Originally designed as an electric locomotive, powered from overhead pantographs or frame-mounted third rail voltage pickups, the Class 1 dominated commuter rail passenger services in most of the major cities of GEAR 1. When the costs of extending the power distribution infrastructure of cities became too high to inaugurate intercity service, many railroads began to look toward converting their long-serving fleets to fusion or planning their eventual replacement with newer designs. Class 1's have been surprisingly resilient, staying in service and being converted to fusion, many variants retaining their former electricity collection equipment as a backup system where service is available.
Rated from 3,500 to 4,500 horsepower, the upgraded fusion units provide 6,000 total horsepower or 5,750 nominal horsepower and regulated draw for trainline electrical power.

Image

Gravesend Class 7 - Highlands and Coastal Railway, MTSX/Federal Arsenals
The Class 7 was Gravesend's answer to the SD45; rated at 7,000 horsepower, this heavy freight hauler generates 8,900 total horsepower or 8,000 nominal horsepower with trainline power for attached passenger cars in fusion form. The Class 7 is one of the preferred locomotives used in hilly and mountainous routes.

Image

Gravesend Class 8 "Mountain Man" - Military Transportation Service (RailTank Mark 1), Highlands and Coastal Railway, and others
The Class 8 Mountain Man was one of the most powerful general service locomotives in GEAR 1 prior to fusion locomotive development. Rated for 9,000-11,000 horsepower depending on installed powerplant, the double-ended Class 8 can tackle the steepest grades on the national railway system. Because it has control cabs on both ends, it doesn't require extensive facilities or trackage to reverse direction. The Class 8's biggest operator is the Northern Mining Company, which operates in GEAR 1's most mountainous regions. A number of older units were retrofit by the Army to carry weapons and pull troop trains that move in more dangerous frontier zones. Fusion units generate 11,000 horsepower using a tandem fusion drive unit.

Send in the Marines (Engineers)

G1083 / BTR-80 A3 "Viking" Amphibious Engineer Fighting Vehicle Variant
GEAR 1 Marine Corps

Developed jointly by the Ground Forces Project Manager (Amphibian Fighting Vehicles) and Ground Forces Project Manager (Combat Engineering) offices, with Inter-Global Automotive Special Applications and Fabrication as the prime contractor, the G1083 AEFV was derived from the amphibious assault vehicle, wheeled, Bronevaya Transportr 80 "Viking" with A3 upgrades. As the base nodel for a large number of combat vehicles in service with the GEAR 1 Marines, it was the primary choice for adaptation into a battlefield transport for the Marines' Combat Engineers.

Capable of transporting a squad of thirteen Marines ashore in sea states up to level 3 (of 5), the boat-like hull, naturally buoyant "balloon" tire design, and waterjet propulsion units offer superior performance for Marine combat applications than the Stryker / LAV III program used by the Ground Forces Corps of the Fighting Line as their universal wheeled fighting vehicle (which is only operationally authorized for swift water river crossings, and is subject to several weight limits that preclude the installation of certain armament types and equipment without losing its combat loaded amphibian rating).

For the Combat Engineers application, the Viking is fitted with a combination turret housing three systems: one remotely operated mounting for a squad support weapon (Mk.19 AGL or M2HB HMG), a single MICLIC armored mine clearing line charge launcher system, and a Demolition Rocket system with six 5"/127mm high explosive antitank (HEAT) rocket-propelled demolition rounds. It is also fitted with an adjustable light dozer blade for creating or clearing obstacles. Unlike ground combat engineer equipment, the dozer blade has special vent covers that, when opened, allow seawater to flow through the dozer bucket and eliminate hydro-resistance. This permits the Viking EFV to travel efficiently and at full speed through the water without changing its buoyancy characteristics. The covers are closed to keep earth from dropping out of the dozer bucket during normal operations. Once ashore, remotely controlled lane marking units can be fitted to the hull sides for deploying mine clearance marker flags.

As with all Vikings, the hybrid fusion-electric drive powerplant, EFDU, transaxle and marine drivetrain are at the rear of the hull, troops ride amidships on side benches with two assault hatches in the hull sides. The driver and commander/turret operator ride facing forward in the bow of the vehicle, with the dismount squad leader facing astern between them. Driver and commander also have escape hatches in the roof of the hull. It is both watertight and NBC sealed.

Also in development for the Viking AEFV is a turret replacement that can be installed by maintenance units in the field, mounting four to six projectors for the VOLCANO remote-controlled landmine dispersal system. This system may be ready for fielding at any time as the VOLCANo system has already seen wider adoption among the combat engineer assets of the Ground Forces.

EWP Equipped Combat Vehicles

Postby Gear 1 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 9:35 pm

The EWP - Energy Weapon, Pulse - equipped combat vehicles are still in the experimental stage at the GEAR1 weapons development service.

EWP is the first generation of energy weapon that was designed on Haven for the GEAR1 armed forces, and was intended to outmatch conventional projectile weapons in all aspects, including range, performance, rate of fire and first shot, first kill lethality. The EWP pulse cannon is a high-output, directed energy weapon.

To comply with the safety concerns of requiring a bank of microfusion power generators to make the weapon "hot", the entire system was designed to fit in the special turret, and vehicles mounting the EWP were adapted to a Crew-In-Hull (CIH) configuration. Safety features of the EWP turret include an emergency scram system for the fusion generators (which would make the pulse cannon inoperative), as well as explosive ejector bolts and blowout panels to detach an overloading generator, so that the vehicle and crew can theoretically move a safe distance and survive an overload explosion.

Originally tested on the chassis of the GEAR1 modified M-1A3 "Abrams" Main Battle Tank (and M-1A3 "Panther" Tracked Heavy Vehicle), the weapon system proved light enough to also be field tested on the G1126 "Stryker" Medium Wheeled Combat Vehicle.

Pre-Orders from nations politically and diplomatically friendly to GEAR1 are welcomed at this time, as LRIP (Low Rate Initial Production) has been approved and the systems are being displayed in the GEAR1 arms expositions.

The Ground Forces have already signed commitments for 150 EWP on remanufactured (or new-build) M-1A3 Main Battle Tanks and 450 EWP on new-build Stryker vehicles. These initial units are to be assigned to continuing the field test programs, training for Army and Marine combat crews, and deployment to selected Brigade Combat Teams.

The Vectra is offered in seven basic models: 2-door Coupe, 4-door Sedan, Touring Wagon, Coupe Cabriolet, Sedan Cabriolet, Sportruck (like an "El Camino") and R-Spec Sedans/Coupes for racing. The higher-performance SSP upgrade package is exclusively offered to municipal fleets, emergency response units, the Armed Forces and police services. The vehicle is labelled and marketed domestically as Vector, and export models called Vectra. International licenses to produce Vectra are available through the Federation Department of External Trade and Technology Sharing, or by contacting the appropriate departments at Inter-Global Automotive Corporation.

The Safari utility vehicle, based on boxy, conventional all-wheel-drive vehicles of modern-day Earth, is one of the best selling civilian vehicles in most of GEAR 1, next to the Wildcatter, whose sales have slackened due to the nature of its market and the durability of the model in general.

Sold to civilians, the armed forces, and police, the Safari is also seen on many bases as a general security patrol vehicle and law enforcement unit.

Roads and Rails

Postby Gear 1 » Wed Jul 29, 2015 8:19 pm

Image

Somewhere in Center City, the capital of the GEAR 1 colony, a major emergency or civil defense drill has brought out a GEAR 1 Office of Emergency Management (FED OEM) Mobile Command Vehicle, a City Department of Public Works truck and an IGACo. Guardian Touring SSP police wagon, with emergency response personnel including Police, Paramedics, OEM Regional Manager, Military Police, Army Medic and a Liaison Officer from the Kelseyland Royal Guard Brigade.

A request job that was done probably somewhere in CYO 4 before my website galleries and bandwidth got murdered by the hosting company. Arrgh.

Image

Image
Sevvanian MRS-1 Military Road Switcher in "Desert Rock" camouflage paint scheme.

The requested drawing was for a notional Late WWII or Early 1950's diesel design for military use. This model was based on contemporary ALCO American Locomotive Company RS type road switchers. I modified it to be longer, with an armor-plated diesel fuel tank, separate compartments fore and aft of the control cab for the diesel engine and electrical generators, and a ball turret from a B-17 with twin cal-50 HMG for close defense. Typical engine crew is three minimum: Engineer, Train Commander/Radio Operator, and Ball Turret Gunner (Equipment Mechanic).

Image
Uncolored version waiting to be painted or laid over your own camo pattern...

If anyone needs engines or rolling stock designed, the GEAR 1 railroad industry is ready to fill orders and requests.

Whether operated by contractors or a dedicated fleet of equipment solely for the armed forces, just about any type of rolling railroad stock can be used to deploy troops, vehicles and supplies to ports or the combat zone. Here are examples of some pieces in GEAR 1 service.

All military and government owned rail equipment is administered by a pseudo corporation, called the Military Transportation Service, Rail Division, and is assigned the federation reporting marks of MTSX, which are used to identify ownership of its equipment.

GEAR 1 operates both the basic civilian designs of equipment, and specially modified "war stock" which carry weapons to protect supply trains from ambushes or marauders in the more lawless and uncontrolled frontier areas along the country's national borders. Subsidiaries like FEDARS (Federation Arsenals) and FEDTREAS (Federation Treasury) may use unique paint schemes on dedicated equipment, but they are still dispatched and maintained by the Railway Operating Battalions of the armed forces.

LAV 1 Grimjack - First generation wheeled combat vehicles

Postby Gear 1 » Sat Aug 08, 2015 8:06 pm

The GEAR1 Grimjack wheeled APC was derived from the designs of the South African "Ratel" light armored vehicle and battle taxi. A total of 13 variants are available for the Grimjack, which is a 6x6 light fusion drive powered vehicle. It is amphibious (propelled by the turning of its wheels) and NBC sealed, as well as optimized against landmines using a reverse-engineered, boat-shaped bottom hull.

Eventually given the standard designation G101 (LAV 1), the Grimjack served as the standard issue vehicle for medium infantry, light recon and support units. Due to its ruggedness and reliability, most of the inventory remains in service with the GEAR 1 Organized Military Reserve (OMR) forces, or have been remanufactured for service in urban tactical response units of the Federation National Police (FEDPOL).

Orders are being accepted for new-build or remanufactured vehicles through foreign military sales programs.

Inter Global Automotive Vector / Vectra SSP Sedan

Postby Gear 1 » Thu Aug 13, 2015 11:21 pm

Displayed are examples of the IGACo. Vectra Special Service Police model, painted in a variety of camouflage patterns. This promotional assembly was intended to be used to sell a variety of government contracts including outfitting remote military base security forces and the young Federation National Police (FEDPOL) and Border Constabulary (BORCON) organizations operating on the country's frontier.

While the idea of camo paint on civilian police cars was considered ill-conceived in the major cities, the frontier forces actually accepted some test patterns for the use of their Constables and Marshals as they performed their duties in the more remote areas of the borderlands. The Vectra program didn't really take off however, more because of the availability of Safari and Wildcatter utility vehicles, which were better suited to the duties and conditions the remote frontier patrols encountered.

Image
Military Police demo models in various camo paint, marked for 717th Military Police Company (Garrison), Eagle Point Military Reservation and Proving Grounds
FEDPOL/BORCON test models used a standard patrol car with SSP Polizei Green striping, and replacing the SSP Off White portions with camo paint, as seen at Eagle Point Proving Grounds.

Inter-Global still considers these variants of the Vectra part of their lineup and will accept orders from appropriate authorities and foreign friendly governments for camo pattern sedans.

GEAR 1 Public Transportation Services - Taxis

Postby Gear 1 » Mon Aug 17, 2015 9:31 am

Taxicabs have long been regarded as an efficient, private party service for getting around big cities and areas where auto ownership isn't practical for everyone.

In GEAR 1, the sprawling urban areas are no different, seeing services provided by some large national franchises and a variety of local operators.

The vehicles of choice for "checker cab services" include the Vector/Vectra Touring compact wagon, CityVan minivan, Garda / Guardian midsize sedan, and the Safari AWD utility vehicle.

ImageImageImageImageImage
The Vectra compact wagon carries up to four passengers plus a good deal of luggage for the average taxi consumer. Outfitted with digital adboards, the franchisees make extra money running advertisements while on their routes.

ImageImageImageImage
Roomier in the passenger cabin, but with less space for bags and cargo, the Garda midsize sedan is a taxi mainstay. Also fitted with digital adboards, this model was one of the first adopted for large scale taxi fleets.

ImageImageImageImage
Image
With seating for up to six passengers and variable amounts of luggage and packages, the CityVan is a flexible addition to the taxi fleets of GEAR 1.

Image
A CityVan in use as a security and patrol vehicle for the Federation Port Authority, Center City Regional Airport

ImageImage
With a smooth, all wheel drive ride and well appointed interior, the Safari in commercial service is a pleasurable mode of transport for up to three passengers and their luggage. Mainly operated by the larger franchises in remote areas that take advantage of their off road capability, suburbanites often enjoy a run into the city aboard the Safari instead of the mainstream fleet taxis. (But the drivers are allowed to charge a premium fare within the public transport regulations...)

Thank you for your order! Production has begun on your 5,000 units and deliveries can begin by high-speed transport ship / cargo aircraft by the end of the month. Your final cost will be 467,500,000 GUC Universal Credits.

Should you wish to procure spare fusion drive trains, specialized parts and tooling for the armor kits, your nation can license produce them with full manufacturer support for an investment of 50,000,000 GUC Universal Credits.

Thank you for your contact regarding the Vector automotive product line! In response to your request for a product quotation, IGACo is prepared to deliver the following units. Unit costs are listed in NS$ (NationStates Dollars) and the equivalent in GUC (GEAR 1 Universal Credits) at the prevailing exchange rate of 2 GUC : 1 NS$ on the World Assembly financial markets.

Your Nation has been approved for Government to Government sale. Your costs will be far below the retail cost of the requested SSP vehicles. You need only to choose how you want your quantity of 1,500 units divided. (N.B. The Vector product line for export is labelled on all documentation and vehicle branding as "Vectra".)

Vectra Sedan SSP 1.8 Standard Package - NS$ 13,000 (GUC 26,000) per copy (wholesale from domestic production) - Retail cost is NS$ 23,000 (GUC 46,000)
Vectra Sedan SSP 3.0 High-Output Interceptor - NS$ 14,000 (GUC 28,000) per copy (wholesale from domestic production) - Retail cost is NS$ 24,000 (GUC 48,000)

Distribution of spare parts and Core drivetrain unit spares from GEAR 1 factories are at wholesale costs. Licenses to produce spares or complete Vectra SSP vehicles through your own industry have been authorized by the Federation Government's International Trade Division.

We look forward to your letter of acceptance of these terms and are prepared to commence deliveries immediately. Should you wish a customized paint scheme for your police vehicles, please advise (OOC: I'll draw and recolor your own for you) or select from the camouflage/civilian patterns in the examples.

With Highest Regards,

Inter-Global Automotive Co.

Aramingo "Dart" kneeling shuttlebus

Postby Gear 1 » Mon Aug 17, 2015 7:19 pm

Used for rapid / mass transit, the Aramingo Dart bus is a first generation fusion-electric drivetrain vehicle. Designed for limited inner-city and city to airport use, longer routes are covered by more comfortable commuter trains and high speed subways. Motor coaches are currently in development to provide services to areas not covered by the rail network or inaccessible to the low-ground clearance shuttlebus.

West Rail - The Gateway To The Golden Skyline

Postby Gear 1 » Wed Aug 19, 2015 4:40 pm

West Rail Marketing Slogans - "All Points West And Beyond" - "Route of the Five Finger Canyons" - "The Golden Nugget Line"

West Rail, also known as Western Regional Cargo Transport and Logistics, is a fairly modern railroad company that has begun to compete with the "old dogs" of the GEAR 1 national railroad system. Originally founded by a former Northern Mining Company rail division executive to serve as a feeder railroad to expand behind the Northern Mines assets that were steadily moving west to conquer a large, mountainous expanse and exploiting its vast mineral resources, West Rail originally used older equipment leased from a variety of sources. Eventually, the flow of revenue put the company in the black and engineering began on its first company-owned main line. Up until the blazing of the first routes, the trains carrying products from the Northern Mines quarries and mountain digs were using the same quick deployment railroad trackage that Northern Mines laid in order to send their crews and surveyors out. This was often slow and hazardous work, nevermind the frequent disputes with locals and threats of raids and sabotage with the military too distant to respond quickly with anything other than air support.

Spurred growth from the westbound main line and re-investment in current rolling stock is serving West Rail well, as it now picks up additional contracts and is often given resupply assignments to the new settlements opening behind the Northern Mines camp movements, military outposts and whistle stops.

HHP-5 "A" Unit (Control Cab) - Fusion-electric hybrid drive locomotive
The entire West Rail fleet is composed of HHP-5 primary locomotives, with the exception of yard helpers in the extreme western stations that join with Northern Mining Company outposts, where leased Class 8 Mountain Man locos formerly owned by Northern Mines, assemble trains and assist the material consists coming out of the mining camps. The main line is able to maintain very high transit speeds due to the standardization of operations on the HHP-5A.

HHP-2B "B" Unit (Power Booster) - Fusion-electric hybrid drive locomotive
While the West Rail management considered pairing the HHP-2A and HHP-2B as their prime mover combination, the need for speed pushed the selection of the latest head end fusion power. As a booster unit, the HHP-2B has no equal, and is used on heavy unit trains.

To: Gear 1; ATTN Sales
From: Isaac Hidalgo
Subject: Hardware Acquisition Request

Greetings!

It pleases me to announce that funds have been allocated specifically to the Birtonian Ground Defense Force in order purchase several pieces of hardware from GEAR 1. There are many new improvements to national defense and we would like GEAR 1 products to be at the forefront of these national endeavors! Upon reviewing your catalog and vetting your products, our evaluation has concluded that you are a satisfactory company worthy of providing the Birtonian military with quality products.

To begin with, the Knights-Regent are beginning to implement a "mobile fortress" idea. It utilizes the current rail systems that circumvent Birtonia, in addition to new tracks being laid out. Military freight and personnel are shipped daily on these tracks and many parallel the border, were there are lighter ground security forces. Therefore the Gravesend class 8 Mountain Man military transportation service, or "Rail Tank" as you have coined it, is wonderfully perfect for the job. In order to provide additional security and engine power, the Mlitary Road switcher will be utilized.

That will be all for rail systems for now.

In addition I have been authorized for other products from GEAR 1. We have great interest in your EWP program, and are willing to furnish personnel, raw materials, production facilities and funds necessary to produce these weapons on a large scale. Please inform us what you will need. The Grimjack line of armored vehicles has been noted and we would like to procure both the SHORAD-F and 120mm self propelled mortar version. Would it be possible for a repainting of the vehicles as well? One final question is if you will be producing an ambulance variant of the Grimjack, and if not, we could provide additional funds to develop one.

Please give us the final pricing on these items and we will wire them directly, and securely to your accounts.

Sincerely,

Knight-Major Isaac Hidalgo
Commander, Department of Supply and Acquisition
Birtonian Ground Defense Forces

GEAR 1 Specialized City Vehicles etc.

Postby Gear 1 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 8:04 pm

As in every major industrialized colony world, vehicles are designed and then adapted to many roles and uses, perhaps not originally intended by their designers. GEAR 1 is no exception.

Outfitted with plow blade, spotlight lamps and a 16-foot long, 7-foot high, 8-foot wide cold rescue module permanently attached and hardwired into the fusion-electric power plant. Standard military TTLC's can also carry and power the rescue module, as well as standard TEU (20 x 8 x 8 foot) ISO containers modified as portable emergency shelters.
