South Sands power plant, reactors 3 and 4
This structure houses two Magnox reactors and has been operating reliably since 1972
We are regulated by the INRC, the International Nuclear Regulatary Commission, the IAEA as well as the Ministry of Energy, this ensures South Sands Nuclear provides a safe, reliable means of power generation with our reactors, safe and environmentally considerate storage and disposal of nuclear material after it has been used in our reactors, and the safe transportation of nuclear fuel.
South Sands Nuclear was founded in 1965 when the Auroran government nationalised the electricity industry, bringing in 4 power companies into one large company, with its new headquarters being situated in South Sands. Since then we have grown and grown to ensure that we have the power to deliver energy requirements for the growing needs of the Aurora Confederacy. For our domestic supply, South Sands Nuclear pushes out high voltage direct current at over 750,000 volts for national transmission which is stepped down to 110v dc for domestic supplies.
When it comes to plant security, we take that seriously too, each plant is protected by armed guards who are there to protect the plant from potential aggressors, these are generally provided by the Civil Defence Authority, and on the Aurora Confederacy at least are authorised to use lethal force if needed, however of South Sands sets up in an overseas nation, we will liaise with local authorities to provide security, this will generally be by means of a military or police authority for accountability to the host nation.
South Sands is hoping to invest in your nation, whether it to take over existing power plants, construct and run new power plants, or manage your nuclear infrastructure such as safe transportation of nuclear material. As well as nuclear power, South Sands produces electricity by coal and tidal hydro, and will in some areas that require it consider Geothermal power source.
Station types offered by South Sands Nuclear
1: Nuclear Thermal
Here, a nuclear reactor is used to produce heat which is then used to generate steam to drive turbines.
Reactor types available:
Magnox Gas Cooled Reactor
Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor
Pressurised Water Reactor
Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor
Pressurised Water Reactor
2: Solid Fuel Thermal
In this type of power plant the fuel is typically coal, however biomass (wood pellets) can be used instead of coal, the solid fuel is used to produce heat is then used to generate steam to drive turbines
3: Liquid fuel thermal
These types of power plant work identical to coal fired stations but instead of coal use heavy oil and recovered oil.
4: Gas fired thermal
Gas fired thermal stations use large gas fired boilers to generate steam to drive turbines in order to produce electricity
5: Gas-Turbine Combined Cycle
These stations take up a small footprint compared to thermal plants, here a gas turbine engine similar to those used to power an aeroplane or ship are used to drive a generator directly, whilst in the exhaust stream a heat recovery circuit generates steam to drive a second turbine, making sure no energy from the turbine is wasted
6: Hydroelectric
Here a large dam is built to hold back a river and generate a head of water, this is then used to drive a turbine which is coupled to a generator.
7: Solar Thermal
Ideal for countries that have an abundance of sun such as desert nations, here large mirrors focus sunlight onto a tower that has a boiler installed, this then heats up salt to be used as a heat transfer medium to be used in a thermal steam circuit like a conventional thermal power station.
8: Solar PV
Adaptable and environmentally friendly, here solar panels generate power.
9: Localised Diesel
Ideal for small nations with small populations, here the electricity is produced by means of diesel engines driving alternators. Scaled down versions of these installations are also suitable for additional backup electricity sources for existing nuclear power plants as well places where a continuation of power is vital to life, such as hospitals.
10: Windfarms
Here, large areas of land are utilised in the housing of tower mounted turbines driven by windmills.
11: Geo thermal
Drill deep enough into the ground and you will encounter rock hot enough to turn water into steam, such areas can be found near active volcanic fields and so little infrastructure is needed in order to create steam with sufficient pressure to drive turbines. As such these stations are relatively cost efficient as it is the ground itself that has the energy to turn the water into steam as opposed to a large boiler or nuclear reactor with steam raising plant.

Nuclear reprocessing
Shipping of nuclear fuel
South Sands Nuclear's safe storage site in South Sands has two storage areas, a wet site for short term storage of Magnox fuel prior to reprocessing, for longer term, Magnox fuel is stored in a CO2 environment where it is kept refrigerated in a dry storage environment. From here in the primary containment building it is transferred to the reprocessing plant to be recycled into new nuclear fuel, here the waste fission products and plutonium and uranium are separated from eachother. Plutonium is then prepared as new fuel rods for reactors that are fuelled on Plutonium, whilst Uranium fuel is re enriched to be reused in other reactors, the waste fission products is glassified and encased in concrete and prepped for safe, environmentally friendly disposal at a secure disposary that is located in a classified location and guarded by the Auroran Civil Defence Authority. After spending a short period of time at local cooling and storage sites, the spent fuel that is no longer suitable for use in nuclear power stations is transported top a deep geological storage site in the north of the Aurora Confederacy.
When it comes to shipping, Our fleet of dedicated transport ships are armed with 50 calibre machine guns to ward off any potential attacker and always sail in pairs, furthermore they are escorted whereever they sail by 4 ships from the Auroran Navy, this is to reduce the risk of hijack of the vessel and its cargo, providing a heavy measure of security for the cargo.
Each ship is designed to be ice proof and state of the art with multiple redundancy built into them. Each vessel has twin propellers, twin rudders and 4 engines, everything that can be duplicated has been duplicated, this makes them the safest ships on the ocean. The holds of each ship can transport 2 transport flasks, a diagram is seen below.
These flasks are tested to the highest standards to ensure that they, no matter what the accident remain intact, whether it be a fire, truck crash, train crash or simply dropped, the transportation flasks WILL remain intact, ensuring that no radioactive material is released. When aboard the ship, the flasks are not simply lashed, the cradles they sit in are in fact bolted to the ships hull to ensure that they remain in place for the voyage.
For transportation of low and medium level waste to our safe store locations, South Sands Nuclear SMC uses several contractors, one of which being Spedycja Mielowski, this low and medium level waste is however not fiscile material, but material which has been used in or around radioactive components and materials and so deemed to be contaminated.
