Description

YellOS (YellowApple, Inc. Operating System) is a modular and cross-platform operating system from YellowApple, Inc. renowned for its robustness, low resource consumption, and portability while making no sacrifices in ease of use and appearance. Like all YellowApple, Inc. software products, YellOS is both free as in 'free speech' (released under the GNU General Public License) and 'free beer' (costs absolutely nothing to download, install, use, modify, distribute, or do anything else with).

YellOS is a Unix-like operating system, having originated as an enterprise-grade Linux distribution, and still uses a highly-modular variant of the Linux kernel. These Linux underpinnings have facilitated YellOS's growth from an experiment in high-level coding to among the most trusted names in the enterprise world. Combining low resource consumption with high reliability, security, and usability is the overarching goal of YellOS.

Here's just some of the numerous features available in YellOS:

Cross-compatibility: the YellOS API Module Subsystem enables users to install API Modules, which provide both API and ABI compatibility with Windows, Mac OS X, Phoenix², and more (note: dependent on target architecture; binaries compiled for one architecture may need to be recompiled to run on another architecture)
Stability: rebooting is a thing of the past; YellOS's modularity - including kernel and driver redundancy - allows for a YellOS installation to run for as long as the hardware lives
Performance: native YellOS applications are distributed as platform-neutral bytecode; on officially-supported architectures, the installation process automatically recompiles software packages to platform-specific binaries, taking into account all code optimizations available to the target platform and utilizing them for maximum runtime performance
Portability: since all YellOS software - even YellOS itself - is distributed in platform-neutral bytecode, YellOS can install and run on virtually any system that the installer will run on - which is (you guessed it) virtually any system
Scalability: YellOS installations on the same local area network can coordinate with each other and form ad-hoc computing clusters out-of-the-box, making all YellOS-powered computers and devices work faster; alternately, YellOS Cluster Edition enables even users with minimal computing knowledge to harness the power of dedicated cluster computing in their own homes
Pizazz: the YellOS Graphical Shell (YOS-GS) is fully three-dimensional, and vector-based graphics make YellOS look beautiful on any screen size and pixel density
Security: process isolation, intelligent memory management, multi-tiered security levels, support for multi-factor authentication, and a myriad of other features make malware obsolete; plus, if an exploit is found, YellOS's open-source design model allows for rapid security updates
Usability: the YellOS Graphical Shell - and the included applications - are powerful, beautiful, and user-friendly, making them suitable for novices and power users alike; plus, the integrated YellOS Package Management System not only provides users with all kinds of software just a click or tap away, but also updates both the operating system and installed software automatically and without fuss

YellOS Desktop Edition can run on as low as 512MB of RAM with a single YellOS is officially supported (by YellowApple, Inc.) on SPARC (including and especially YellowApple, Inc.'s YA-SPARC variant), IA32, AMD64, IA64, ARM (32 or 64 bit), PowerPC/POWER, MIPS, and various other embedded architectures, while YellOS community developers - thanks to YellOS being free, libre, and open source software (FLOSS) - have ported the operating system to a wide array of more obscure architectures.

YellOS comes in several varieties optimized for specific use cases.

Desktop Edition

YellOS Home Edition is the premier end-user operating system, complete with a full suite of office, desktop publishing, entertainment, gaming, internet messaging, and web browsing software. In addition, YellOS Home Edition includes the Win32, Win64, OSX, Java, and Phoenix² API Modules pre-installed. Combined with the YellOS Graphical Shell, a slick three-dimensional desktop system and window manager using WebGL, Java, and YellowApplan-born HTML6, YellOS Home Edition is a must-have for any household.

Enterprise Edition

YellOS Enterprise Edition is similar in design to YellOS Home Edition, but is optimized for use on an enterprise-level network. Specifically, YellOS Enterprise Edition is pre-configured for network booting, remote user data, automated installation/configuration, advanced user permissions, and pre-installation of the DOS, Win32, Win64, Java, and ELF API Modules, among many other optimizations required for business workstations. YellOS Enterprise Edition, like YellOS Desktop Edition, comes with the YellOS Graphical Shell by default.

Server Edition

YellOS Server Edition is designed specifically to be a robust and fully-featured server operating system. The installer allows for pre-configuration of the server during installation to serve as a file server, database server, DNS server, DHCP server, Active Directory server, print server, web server, torrent seedbox, gaming server, cloudserver, or any combination of features thereof, plus many more other server role presets. YellOS Server Edition is, like YellOS Enterprise Edition, designed to be used on an enterprise-level domain-driven network, and is also pre-configured for network booting, remote user data, automated installation/configuration, and advanced user permissions. YellOS Server Edition does not include a graphical user interface by default, instead using YAsh, a robust shell based on the Bourne-again shell but includes its own baked-in support for three-dimensional vector graphics.

Embedded Edition

YellOS Embedded Edition is the most commonly-used version of YellOS, and is actually distributed as a source tarball rather than traditional installation media. YellOS Embedded Edition is designed specifically to be installed as part of an embedded system. YellOS Embedded Edition is the operating system of choice to drive devices ranging from personal alarm clocks to industrial robots to even state-of-the-art unmanned space exploration vehicles. Given that YellOS is intended to only be installed with the software necessary for a specific device, the YellOS Graphical Shell is not installed by default.

Mobile Edition

YellOS Mobile Edition is a spin-off of YellOS Embedded Edition designed specifically for mobile phones. Included are applications for phone calls, text messaging, mobile web browsing, email, multimedia playback, video/photo capture, and much more. Like YellOS Embedded Edition, it is distributed as a source tarball, but also includes the iOS, Android, WinPhone, Blackberry, and Java API modules, as well as a mobile-optimized version of the YellOS Graphical Shell.

Vehicular Edition

YellOS Vehicular Edition, a spin-off of YellOS Embedded Edition, is the ultimate software solution for the computers controlling automobiles, rail vehicles, aircraft, naval vessels, and even spacecraft. YellOS Vehicular Edition contains a number of specialized programs and scripts for managing a vehicle's engines, brakes, transmission, fuel systems, and everything else that factors into a vehicle's operation. It also includes graphical software packages for vehicular user interfaces, including software for navigation systems, automotive entertainment systems, in-vehicle communications systems, and much more. Like YellOS Embedded Edition, it is distributed as a source tarball.

YellOS Lightweight Edition

YellOS Lightweight Edition is similar to YellOS Enterprise Edition and YellOS Desktop Edition, combining their features into one single package. However, YellOS Lightweight Edition emphasizes resource-conservation, using the lightweight YOS-GSlite graphical shell, as well as more lightweight alternatives to the same applications found in YellOS Enterprise Edition and YellOS Desktop Edition. YellOS Lightweight Edition only comes with the Java API Module installed by default.

YellOS Multimedia Edition

YellOS Multimedia Edition is a spin-off of YellOS Desktop Edition featuring a wide variety of video, audio, and image editing software and utilities. From red-eye correction to music composition to a full-feature CGI film, YellOS Multimedia Edition can do it all. The Win32, Win64, OSX, Phoenix², Flash, and Java API Modules are pre-installed by default.

YellOS Developer Edition

YellOS Developer Edition is a spin-off of YellOS Enterprise Edition designed specifically for the design, development, and testing of software for virtually any operating system and CPU architecture, and is actually the operating system used by YellowApple, Inc.'s YellOS developers to develop YellOS itself. With an extensive suite of IDEs, compilers, debuggers, flowchart programs, and virtual machines, YellOS Developer Edition is the perfect choice for all programmers ranging from first-time coders to the most experienced software engineers. YellOS Developer Edition only includes the Java API Module by default, but the installation process enables additional API Modules to be selected during installation.

YellOS Tactical Edition

YellOS Tactical Edition is optimized specifically for military applications, and is the operating system that drives the AppleWear Advanced Tactical Uniform, the AppleGuard Automated Sentry Unit, and all YellowApplan military vehicles. YellOS Tactical Edition includes support for electronic warfare systems, advanced sensors systems, cyberwarfare / digital infiltration, weapons targeting, and much, much more. YellOS Tactical Edition is distributed as a source tarball and only includes the Java API Module by default, and the user interface (Full, Light, Command-Line, None) can be selected during installation.

YellOS Manufacturer Edition

YellOS Manufacturer Edition is designed specifically for the automated installation and configuration of other YellOS installations in OEM environments either over a network or by copying a pre-configured and automated installer on any removable storage device able to be booted from. Included are a multitude of compilers, configuration/automation utilities, testing utilities, and installation media creation tools, among other utilities. Only the Java API Module is installed by default, and the user interface (Full, Light, Command-Line) can be selected during installation.

YellOS Medical Edition

YellOS Medical Edition is designed specifically with healthcare applications in mind, and comes preinstalled with YellowApple, Inc.'s AppleCare EMR Software Suite and other free-and-open-source applications vital to any hospital or clinic in the digital world. YellOS Medical Edition is actually a combination of YellOS Server Edition and YellOS Enterprise Edition. YellOS Medical Edition comes with the Java API Module preinstalled by default.
