Most of the modern nations in the world currently have access to stockpiles of nuclear weapons. While very few have actually been deployed against a hostile force, there remains a standing threat of nuclear engagements, and the targeting of dense population centres, where the death toll will be in the tens of billions. The ever increasing threat of MIRV's creates further problems, with one missile alone being capable of destroying entire nations.
Currently installed within New Phyrreus, the SLAMS [Sea, Land and Air Missile System] is the nation's first line of defence against Nuclear attack...
The SLAMS System consists of two distinct 'stages', of a successful defence. Stage one, consists of a cluster of 24 satellites in a Geo-Synchronous orbit above the country. Each one consists of four solar sails, and an on-board computer system. These systems can successfully track any launched MIRVs from their initial lift-off points across the planet, thanks to a magnetically-excited Photon Target Locating system. Three satellites triangulate using these systems onto the missile, and relay information to the others in the cluster, as well as ground control. This information usually contains intel on the missiles' vector, speed, range, type, warhead, point of launch and intended target. Should the missile be deemed hostile, the satellite will manoeuvre itself using on-board hydrogen thrusters, and maintain precise targeting algorithms. Then, a chemically based photon emitting beam, (powered by a stream of constant photons excited by a pinched magnetic field) will fire. While the initial strike will be brief, the damage done to the missile will cause immense stress upon the outer skin, and cause catastrophic heat damage, EMP effects, and stress upon the missile, which will be destroyed or rendered useless upon re-entry or landing.
Should the missiles make it through the satellite clusters, their intel will be passed down to ground control, who will order a scattering of 14 ground missile stations to track the missile's route. Once deemed hostile, the radars will mutually triangulate, and a ME-3 Kinetic Sabot missile will be launched at an intercept vector. The missile will not detonate, rather it simply destroys the nuke by sheer kinetic force, knocking it off target, or obliterating it well out of effective range.
These installations are controlled by the CIC centres, these retain control over the satellites and ground installations that make up SLAMS, and information is constantly fed to the most up-to-date computer systems yet known, allowing quick and easy communications with chiefs of staff and emergency services.
Installation packages start from $625,356,000 for a single stage defence network, and up to $1,967,890,000 for a double stage network. Necessary maintainence and update works will require a continuous payment of $1,786,000,000 PA. All instalment, training and programming operations will be handled by New Phyrrean Department of Missile Defence.
