The Aeryr Challenge

Established in 1968 by Imperial Decree as the Aetenglatyr-Rymantyr Rolling Stock Technologies and Production Corporate Partnership as a union of several major industrial corporations dedicated to the development and production of rolling stock for use within the Second Empire, Aeryr's origins lie in the ambitious high speed rail research and development program spearheaded by state subsidised research funds in the late 1960s. The alliance of corporations, created to give fledgling Anemonian activity in the sector a fighting chance, took the best of Anemonian brilliance in technological know-how and skill in production and applied it to the cold metal of the railway; with the production of the Generation I EX High Speed Train, and its widespread use across and between the nation, the rest became history.

Aeryr in its current form is a corporate amalgamate operating primarily through contributions and activity from three major firms, Fyrkondierikan North Heavy Industries IECpl, Aetenglatyr-Rymantyr Rolling Stock Technologies IECpl and Palentyr Electrotechnics IECpl, with tacit partnerships in place with countless other firms, including world leaders in technology such as Eletyr IECpl or the Imperial Foundries of Anemos Major. Our domestic rail supply voltage is 1500v DC by overhead pick up, with platform clearances permitting a maximum body width of 2.9m, will there be a narrow body variant capable of running on direct current? also a possibility of a 400 to 500km/h maximum speed in service.

We regret to inform you that the utilisation of non-standard narrow gauges by the EX high speed series of rolling stock was a practice revised by Generation 4 in the track relaying program of 1981, and is no longer a design option in the EXGen 7. Unfortunately, modifying the train to accommodate a narrow gauge would require its complete redesign due to the relatively fine placement of vital components within the train in its current form, and we note that there would be little demand for such a design in the current, standard gauge dominated markets to which we aim to sell. Additionally, the requested maximum speed in service, though theoretically feasible following modification to the EXGen 7 powerplant, was nonetheless considered a waste of space and resources given the maximum speeds both feasible and required on the high speed lines the EXGen 7 was designed for, and we note that attempts to attain such high speeds in service more often than not require sacrifices in other areas, such as passenger safety.

The train can, however, be modified to accommodate alternate sources of catenary energy provision; this information, we fear, will be of scant use of you in consideration of the above.

the wheelsets will still be standard gauge, just that the body work itself will be narrower, however thanks for the reply.

Hello, our office has been charged with the purchase of several new trainsets for use on the Trans-Hyserean Railway currently in development that is planned to run from the nations of Pallisio to Enaria. However, Pallisio and Enaria use 25kv AC 60Hz and 15kv 16.7Hz respectively. Thus, we are hoping to acquire EX Generation 7s in a multi-system form (OOC: a la ICE 3M).

Additionally, we ask of the possibility of having retractable nose couplers for the combining of two 10-unit sets to create 20-car sets for greater flexibility of capacity as well as for the use of pusher/puller locomotives for worst case scenarios. It is acknowledged that there simply may be no space for such equipment, that the gaps in the coupler doors are likely to interfere with the aerodynamics of the original design, and that the additional weight may hamper performance. With that in mind, nose coupling is not a definite must for us and only an item for consideration.

Should multi-system capability be no problem, we would like to order:

30x EXGen 7 10-Unit sets (25kv 60Hz, 15kv 16.7Hz) With a total cost of 1,200,000,000USD


Should the proposal for nose coupling be accepted, our order would be the same but, with the proposed feature added and additional costs assumed.

The requested modifications are entirely feasible; however, as you correctly ascertain, the addition of coupler doors will adversely affect the aerodynamics of the front cars, though the additional weight will have a minimal effect on the base performance of the train overall. The bicurrent capability is also installable; however, we note that the additional electrical equipment required to manage this may shift the train away from its base specifications.

Dear Madame,

I am writing on behalf of the Javelin Train Company, one of the ten private train operators in the Dangish Empire. The Javelin Train Company was founded just two years ago, after an independent commission recommended to the Imperial Government that Dangish Railways be privatised. Sixteen railway licences were auctioned to operators, and Javelin Train Company, backed by the transport behemoth Sky, operates the lucrative Western Mainline and the majority of New London routes.

Before privatisation, the Imperial Government allocated funds of £4 billion to Dangish Railways to spend on improving rail infrastructure and also to purchase new high-speed rolling stock. With privatisation, the authority to spend this money was in doubt. After a protracted High Court challenge, this money was split between the ten rail operators in the Empire. As a result, the Javelin Train Company has a budget of £400 million to spend on rolling stock.

We were considering upgrading our tracks to use magnetic levitation technology, but based on the severe power costs we are interested in purchasing traditional rolling stock. As such, we would like to place an order for eight 16-car EX Generation 7 high speed trains. This should greatly shorten the distance on the lengthy New London to Intel route, and we are very excited for the future.
