Summary
The T-120 Goldhorn is the next generation of Lubyakan exploitation battle tank, designed to replace the aging T-105 Orc Exploitation tank in order to create a superior vehicle for the information based warfare of the twenty first century. The T-120 Goldhorn is designed around these information systems, rather than merely incorporating them as was common in upgrades of older vehicles. When this is combined with its increased levels of mobility provided by the new design, the T-120 is expected to provide the military with the greatest capabilities possible with modern technology, while doing so at a cost low enough to provide for mass production, ensuring that the T-120 remains a cost effective fighting vehicle that can be deployed in large numbers during any combat operation, and widely issued to Lubyakan Grenadier formations.

History and Combat Record

In the later years of the Windigo War, Lubyakan armored vehicle design split into two camps regarding the future form that Lubyakan armor would take. While the main battle tank concept had been dominant since the end of the Continental Wars, there were still two camps within the Lubyakan Army attempting to persuade the Ministry of Defense to side with them when it came time to replace the aging T-95 and T-100 tanks that had served successfully since the late 1950s. One camp, led primarily by officers from the Grenadier divisions, argued that while the battle tank could engage in breakthrough operations, its primary mission was to exploit holes created in the enemy line, and in order to do so, the next generation of tank should focus on being fast, mechanically reliable, and with a long range, arguing that the resultant loss of armored protection and firepower could be compensated for by the gains in speed and shock, along with committal of the tank to areas where the enemy was already heavily engaged. The other camp, led by officers of the Rifle and Tank divisions claimed that the role of exploitation was already filled by the Grenadier divisions, and that the Army’s main tank should be primarily designed for combating enemy armor and supporting the infantry a breakthrough operation, so that there would be an opening to exploit in the first place. Their proposed vehicle would be much heavier, focusing on increased firepower and armor at the expense of maneuverability and range, with the belief that the tank would never be far from friendly resupply in standard operations.

Each faction had significant support, both within the Army and in the Ministry of Defense, thus resulting in a deadlock until compromise could be established. In order to satiate the Grenadier officers, a major upgrade program would be created for the T-100, christened as the T-105. The resultant vehicle was satisfactory in terms of reliability and range, although as the next generation of vehicles came into play within the region, complaints began to arise about the perceived lack of firepower and armored protection provided by the T-105, especially when compared to the expensive vehicles available in the global market place.. Meanwhile, the Rifle and Armored wings of the Army were to receive the completely new T-110 Battle Tank, which would feature both exceptionally heavy armor and firepower, in the form of a 140 mm ETC cannon and Anyova-II armor, complete with heavy metal inserts. However, some officers continued to declare that the T-110’s armor and firepower were insufficient, presenting the concept of the reserve tank that would be nearly analogous to the heavy breakthrough tanks of the Continental Wars. With the success of the T-110 in the Paradoxian Hegemonic Wars driving them, they succeeded in ensuring the development of the T-115 ‘Chimera’ Heavy Tank, which mounted even heavier armor and weaponry than the T-110.

However, in more recent years both the T-110 and the T-115 have come under critique by Army officers, especially those in logistical formations. Both of the vehicles--but the T-115 in particular--were accused of being simply ‘too heavy’ to be combat effective, and it was widely agreed that the 152 mm regenerative liquid propellant (RLP) cannon of the T-115 was simply overkill, providing excessive amounts of power for the targets it was meant to engage. Furthermore, the wide variety in vehicle design had created a logistical nightmare, as parts and mechanics for three very different vehicles had to be acquired and maintained at all times, lest shortages and bottlenecks became commonplace. Even as these criticisms were made, the Grenadier formations once again began to point out that while the armor and armament of the T-105 had been sufficient when the vehicle was introduced in 1989, by 2005, it was hopelessly outclassed, and required replacement. Thus did development begin on the T-120 Goldhorn Exploitation Battle Tank, designed to fully replace the T-105 in Lubyakan service, while also serving to reduce the numbers of T-110 and T-115 tanks. In order to do this, the T-120 would need to preserve the excellent performance of the T-105, while bringing in aspects of the fearsome firepower and defensive systems of the T-110 and T-115 tanks.

Design work on the T-120 Goldhorn began in mid 2005, as the age of the T-105 began to show, and the limitations of the T-110 and T-115 became obvious. Due to the desire to incorporate many new features into the vehicle, the first production runs of the T-120 were not completed until later-2012, although certain breakthroughs in design were used to create the T-105BV as a stopgap vehicle designed both for Lubyakan service, and for export to foreign powers who wished to upgrade their existing T-105 fleets, while not investing in the acquisition of the T-120 on a large scale basis. However, now the T-120 is in full mass-production, with units formerly equipped with the T-105 having their vehicles replaced with the initial version of the T-120 completely on schedule.

Armament

In a way, the T-120 represents a change in direction on behalf of Lubyakan armored fighting vehicle designers, and its armament is perhaps the most telltale sign of this change in focus. The designers of the T-110 and T-115 had prioritized the increased firepower provided by the TA17 140 mm ETC gun of the T-110 and the TA19 152 mm RLP gun of the T-115 at the expense of vehicle weight and mobility, believing that the massive firepower provided by these weapons systems would be absolutely necessary in order to defeat both the existing battle tanks fielded by neighbouring powers, as well as to defeat any new designs created or acquired by those powers in the near future. However, when these vehicles finally say combat, it became clear that their weaponry was overpowered, doing far more damage than was necessary to enemy vehicles, while the added weight necessary to maintain these weaponry limited the ability of these vehicles to advance. As a result, armament became one of the primary focuses of the T-120 project, and perhaps the first change was the decision to pursue a 125 mm main gun for the T-120.

The T-120s main gun is a 125 mm L/55 ETC smoothbore cannon, incorporating design features from the T-110 in terms of the ETC firing system, along with the T-110B with the use of VMK AG’s Frontier tank barrel in order to reduce the weight of the barrel, while preserving the amount of firepower possessed by the tank, by retaining the strength necessary to successfully utilize the ETC firing system. The choice of the ETC firing system was the result of a compromise in the design of the T-120. Perhaps the greatest criticism levelled at the T-105 series was the insufficiency of its conventional 125 mm cannon against modern main battle tanks, and the choice of the new ETC firing system was meant to enable the T-105 to engage hostile battle tanks with a reasonable degree of success. Lubyakan experience with ETC technology in both naval weaponry and the TA17 cannon mounted on the T-110 enabled the new TA16 to be rapidly developed for use, and the cannon was ready for service long before the T-120 was. Although not as powerful as the TA17 140 mm ETC or TA19 152 mm RLP guns mounted on the T-110 and T-115 series respectively, the TA16 was lighter than either of those systems, and could be mounted on the T-120 without having to increase the size of the tanks recoil dampening system or investment into a more efficient muzzle brake design than what had already been developed. While the TA16 cannon lacks a certain degree of killing power, especially when faced against significantly heavier tanks, it is more than sufficient against all but the heaviest of modern battle tanks.

The main gun is mounted in an unmanned turret, mounted slightly rear of the vehicle’s centre. The unmanned turret stems from both the T-110U and T-105BV projects, which sought to transfer the entirety of the crew into the main fighting compartment, rather than in a separate turret structure. As it stands, the turret contains only an observation hatch for the commander, the main gun, its autoloader, ammunition storage, the coaxial and secondary weapons systems and their ammunition, along with the necessary sights and sensors required for the fire control system to accurately identify and calculate the aiming points necessary to engage hostile targets. The main gun is fed by a bustle autoloader, drawing ammunition from the turret bustle directly, enabling the use of full length shells to maintain the necessary levels of firepower deemed necessary for the T-120 to reliably engage most armoured targets. The nature of the tank’s bustle autoloader and large shells has resulted in the turret possessing a distinctive wedge shape, with a narrow front, which widens to make room for the bustle munition storage and autoloader. The excess space caused by the steady widening of the turret is meant to be used for general storage for crew possessions and equipment.

Like most Lubyakan tanks, the T-120s main gun is capable of switching to a reduced charge in order to fire an anti-tank guided munition in order to engage hostile armoured targets at ranges after the point when the TA16's kinetic rounds have lost enough of their energy that penetration of hostile armour is doubtful. The TA16 utilises the new PTURS-14 'Hussar' anti-tank guided missile, which is an improvement on the existing PTURS-11 'Marksman' anti-tank missile utilised on the T-105. The T-105's carouser autoloader proved too short to allow for use of the Hussar, and the missile takes full advantage of the T-120's bustle autoloader to allow for the largest missile possible. The PTURS-14 uses is a SACLOS missile, requiring that fire control remain locked on the target until missile impact and incorporates multiple guidance systems to reduce the impact of jamming or dazzler missile defenses.

Also mounted in the turret is the co-axial armament, which is intended to be used as a back-up for the computerized fire control system, as well as to enable the gunner to engage infantry without having to draw upon the vehicle’s main armament and its limited ammunition supply, which is specialised for use against both hostile armour and hostile installations, so as to fit with the tank’s stated purpouse of exploiting gaps in the enemy line by destroying mobile reserves as well as rear area infrastructure. The co-axial armament is a standard Lubyakan Army heavy machine gun, which has matching ballistic properties to the main armament, and is often used in high electroniv jamming situations, when and if the vehicle’s electronic range finding and target prediction encounters severe issues, or it otherwise disabled. The long range of the AOPP-11 heavy machine gun enables the tank to provide a strong weapon for use against infantry and to enable the vehicle to continue engaging targets, even if its fire control system has been disabled.

Atop the turret in a remote weapon station (RWS) is the T-120’s secondary armament, an ZU-19 35 mm autocannon. Developed from anti-aircraft autocannons mounted on self propelled anti aircraft systems, the ZU-19 is intended to be used against infantry, light armour and unarmoured vehicles, as well as to engage low flying helicopters if necessary, thus preserving ammunition for the main gun . The ZU-19 is mounted in a second turret above the main turret, with a 360 degrees of rotation and +50 degrees of elevation. This flexible turret enable the ZU-19 to be highly flexible and engage targets independently of the main and coaxial armament. The ZU-19, its controls and sensors, along with its ammunition storage is mounted to the right of the main gun and its attendant systems. The high vertical mobility of the ZU-19 enables it to be extremely useful in urban situations, when it can be used to target and engage hostile infantry sheltering at high elevations.

Defense Systems

As an exploitation tank, the T-120 was always intended to prioritise mobility, range and reliability over firepower and armour. This focus on mobility has created some limits on the strength and potency of the vehicle’s passive armour and required compensation on some levels in order to maximize protection in spite of the weight limits of the T-120. The T-120’s protection scheme is multi-layered, designed to ensure the defeat of most hostile rounds from reasonably expected targets via the use of both passive and active measures. While the T-120’s armour can not be expected to defeat the largest and most powerful guns and other weapons commonly mounted on top of the line battle tanks, it can be expected to withstand the firepower of more common tank and anti tank weaponry to a reasonable extent. The defense systems are combined with enhanced survivability measures so that--even if the vehicle suffers a mission kill event--the vehicle can be repaired and the crew recovered for future operations.

The first layer of defenses consists of the T-120s active defense systems, which consists primarily of the TFA-17 ‘Blinder’ Mk III electronic jamming system. The TFA-17s jamming system is designed to block or otherwise disrupt the systems of laser, active and semi-active command guidance munitions. It is also able to successfully interfere with the laser range finding systems commonly utilised on many armoured vehicles for general rangefinding and fire control systems or on certain ‘smart’ weapon systems to identify and home in on a target in order to reduce the chances of the vehicle being engaged at all. Along with electronic countermeasures, the T-120 incorporates advanced signal reduction equipment. The most basic of these systems consists of multiple white phosphorous grenades connected to the TFA-17, which can be used to temporarily shroud the vehicle during key points in time, as well as to allow the vehicle to drive off unprotected infantry in the immediately surrounding area. The T-120 also incorporates radar absorbent and infrared shrouding materials designed to limit the ability of the vehicle to be detected by electronic guidance systems on both ground and air based systems. When combined with the vehicle’s relatively low profile, the sum total of these active protection systems is that the T-120 is capable of operation with a much reduced signature to most forms of detection. The end result is that the vehicle is inherently harder to destroy by simple virtue of being harder to detect.

The T-120’s passive systems are mostly found within the vehicle’s armour scheme, which empasises protection while remaining economic in terms of weight and cost. Like all modern vehicles, the T-120’s Anyova IV-L armour is a composite material consisting of differing layers of material designed to interrupt both the flow of a chemical penetration jet or the structural integrity of a kinetic penetrator. The armour varies in its thickness around the vehicle, but in line with analysis of combat records from the entirety of Lubyakan Army experience with armoured fighting vehicles that shows a vast majority of hits striking the frontal sections of the vehicle, the armour is thickest in the front. There it consists of four distinct layers separating the outside world from the internal fighting compartment. The outermost layer is a simple sheet of high hardness Rota Armour designed to protect the vehicle and underlying armour systems from small arms fire and the armour piercing rounds from the low calibre (30-40 mm) autocannons commonly found on most IFVs around the world. Beneath this layer on the frontal sections of the vehicle is an air space, designed to defeat chemical energy anti-tank weapons by causing premature detonation of the shaped charge, and preventing it from penetrating the fighting compartment. This air space is widest on the front and front third of the vehicle’s sides, where the vast majority of hits are likely to take place. It is mostly non-existent on the rear most 2/3 of the side and the vehicle rear in order to preserve internal space for use in fuel and ammunition storage.

Underneath the air layer is the ‘universal armour’ which covers the entirety of the vehicle, including both rear and full sides. However, thickness varies depending on exact location of the armour, in order to focus the vehicle’s armour protection where hits are most likely, and increase protection while remaining economical in terms of cost and weight. The universal armour is a three layer composite piece, consisting of a layer of ceramic material ‘sandwiched’ between two pieces of Rota armour. The composite nature of the armour provides superior protection over a simple homogenous plate against both kinetic and chemical energy penetrators. In many cases, the universal armour layer incorporates the use of newly developed enchanted materiels, which have proven to be exceptionally more effective in defeating both chemical and kinetic penetration when compared to the non-enchanted material.

However, in order to limit the weight of the vehicle in order to increase operational and strategic mobility, the T-120 series lacks the heavy metal layer common in most heavier vehicles. The lack of this layer creates a vulnerability in the T-120’s protection system with regards to heavy kinetic penetrators. Whereas a heavier vehicle with a heavy metal layer might enjoy protection against the heavy kinetic penetrators, the T-120’s lack of this defense system is a severe vulnerability that must be rectified if the T-120 is to be able to survive in the modern battlefield. In order to provide protection against kinetic energy penetrators, while keeping the vehicle light enough in order to maintain its operational and strategic mobility, the T-120 utilises the newest model of Erotan Heavy Engineering’s Marble explosive reactive armour (ERA). A triumph of magic-technological fusion that EHE has made its name in, the newest variant of Marble ERA has been shown to be capable of shattering kinetic energy long rod penetrators before they penetrate the main armour layer. While there is a multiple hit problem that is inherent to the use of ERA to defend the vehicle, the lightness of Marble ERA allows for both multiple layers of the material to be attached, and for the ERA to be placed along more of the vehicle than a comparative heavy metal layer could be used, including the top of the vehicle. That the ERA is also able to protect the vehicle against chemical penetration only serves to increase the defenses of the vehicle against all forms of possible attack.

Engine and Mobility

In order to maintain itself as a highly mobile vehicle suitable for the exploitation of the enemy’s rear areas in the tactical and operational sense, the T-120 was envisioned from the beginning of combining light weight with an extremely reliable, fuel efficient, and powerful engine. The T-120’s mission profile envisions it as an exploitation vehicle, and this mission statement emphasises the need for range, reliability, and mobility, which were the guiding factors behind the design and implementation of the new 8G-1 Diesel engine. The choice was made to pursue diesel, due to experiences with the gas turbine engine utilised in the T-110 and T-115 designs. The gas turbine systems--while powerful--proved to be too fuel inefficient for the purpouses of the T-120, and thus the use of a diesel engine was fixed. A secondary benefit of the choice to use diesel as opposed to gas turbine was the decreased costs of production inherent in the use of a diesel engine and the relative ease of use that came about from a use of more widely available diesel engine. Even so, the 8G-1 engine is capable of generating up to 1,300 horsepower, sufficient to keep the vehicle at speed, even when significant amounts of energy are demanded by the ETC weapons system. In addition to the main engine, the T-120 mounts a pair of APUs in order to provide power to vital systems such as the overpressure and climate control systems, along with the external sensor systems. While the APUs can not generate sufficient power themselves to operate the ETC gun, they are capable of operating the turret and secondary weapons, enabling the vehicle to remain somewhat combat effective even without the main engine active.

In addition to its engine systems, and the need for large fuel reservoirs, the T-120’s need for mobility has seen its tracks redesigned and optimised for continual and long lasting service, without failure. Stronger track links utilising some of the processes behind the creation of Rota armor have allowed for these advances to be made, without unduly increasing the cost of the vehicle or the weight of its suspension systems. Due to the ETC cannon, the vehicle also relies on electric drive, so that energy can be shifted from propulsion to weaponry with relative ease, and reliability.

Electronic Systems
The most important part of a modern vehicle is its electronic systems, and the presence or lack thereof of these systems can be a deciding factor in the fast paced and demanding nature of modern mechanised warfare. As such, while the cost of the T-120 remains a dominating factor, the vehicle has been equipped with the finest quality electronic systems can be reasonably installed on the vehicle. As has been previously mentioned in the section on the T-120’s defensive capabilities, the vehicle mounts an extensive electronic warfare suite. This suit is built around an electronic ‘dazzler’ system, meant to confuse the seeker heads of laser guided anti-tank missiles and other laser based systems, such as rangefinders and target marking systems. The T-120’s electronic warfare suite is capable of significantly increasing its survivability against most forms of long range ATGMs, while also increasing the vehicle’s survivability by making proper tracking by hostile fire control systems more difficult overall. When combined with high mobility and impressive armour, the T-120 is surprisingly resilient for a vehicle in its weight class.

The T-120’s electronics also include its fire control system, which--by necessity--is of extremely high quality. In every campaign that the Lubyakan Army has engaged in, and in every simulation of tank combat in the modern world, it has been shown that an effective computer assisted fire control system is an absolute necessity for the ensured combat effectiveness, and Erotan Heavy Engineering has moved to ensure that the T-120 will remain effective at a relatively low cost. Like all Lubyakan vehicles, the T-120 is connected to the wider Hive Battle Command System, which serves as a high speed data link between Lubyakan force and commanders, ensuring that decisions can be made with the benefit of the most up to date information. In addition, the T-120’s connection to the Hive BCS is also effective on a tactical level, as it enables the T-120 to engage a target that has been detected by another vehicle or system, but the T-120 is not able to view itself. This capability can be used to successfully hit a vehicle in a defilade position with an ATGM, or fire on a camouflaged target directly that has been successfully marked by escorting infantry. The T-120’s FCS includes most of the standard pieces of equipment for any modern FCS, including laser range finder, night vision equipment, etc. The FCS computer, once a target has been identified by the gunner, is capable of ‘remembering’ up to three targets at any one time, and continually updating the fire solution on the vehicle, and alerting the gunner if a fire solution is no longer possible, given the new position of the T-120 or the identified target. The fire control system can also compensate for the selected ammunition at the time, as well as attempt to account for gravity, speed, and the many other factors can affect the fire solution for a given target. Once informed, the fire control system can automatically slew the vehicle’s turret and gun in order to properly align to the fire solution it has developed, requiring no input from the gunner other than a final press of the trigger to actually fire the shell. Of course, in the case that the vehicle’s system is damaged and unable to function, the T-120 includes back up manual systems for acquiring a proper fire solution of any given target.

The FCS also operates in connection with the wider Hive-BCS network, which prioritises data links between inidividual vehicles, and between units and higher level commanders. At a tactical level, the integrated communication systems allow for vehicle to share everything from positional to fire control data, which allows any unit of vehicles so equipped to operate far more efficiently than traditional non-networked vehicles. Beyond the exceptionally high level communication equipment of the Hive-BCS network, the T-120 is equipped with standard radio communication systems in case the Hive network is unable to function. However, even without access to the Hive-BCS, the onboard computer systems of the T-120 are fully capable of processing and utilising the information provided by the vehicle’s myriad sensors, in order to provide the crew with up to date information on all aspects of the vehicle’s operation and systems.

Crew Amenities and Layout
The T-120 has an unmanned turret style layout, which means that all three crewmen--driver, commander, and gunner--are in the same armoured crew compartment within the vehicle. This layout was chosen for purposes of increased crew survivability while allowing for the overall shrinking of the T-120’s vertical height into a more compact system. In addition, ammunition is to be stored in the bustle of the unmanned turret, rather than in the crew compartment. The net result of this allows for the vehicle’s crew survivability to be immensely high, when compared to older models of the T-110 and especially the T-105. However, this increased survivability carries the setbacks of diminishing maximum total ammunition capacity, while increasing reliance on the autoloader. Within the crew compartment, the commander and gunner sit together beneath the turret, each with a hatch that opens up on either side of the main turret. The driver is seated centerline ahead of the commander and gunner, with a viewing hatch for navigation purposes. The commander also has access to a single hatchway that exits through the unmanned turret, which provides the ability for the commander to increase tactical understanding by providing a superior vantage point for the commander. However, due to the nature of the vehicle it is necessarily more dangerous and difficult to use than in a traditional layout.

In terms of crew amenities--while its small and compact shape results in the interior being relatively compact--the T-120 is outfitted to be as comfortable as possible, in the belief that increased comfort will allow for greater morale, which will increase combat effectiveness. The vehicles interior integrates a boiling vessel to enable the crew to prepare hot beverages along with MREs within the vehicle rather than exiting. The T-120 also includes a separate personal computer system for the crew that is seperate from the fire control, communication, and other computer networks. This computer system is intended for the crew’s personal use, and it capable of connecting to the internet using either military or civilian wireless connections. The separate systems are intended to prevent any potential contamination of the military network by potentially hostile entities.

The crew compartment are intended to be NBC sealed with overpressure systems, and are also intended to be completely climate controlled, with air conditioning and heating depending on the situation in order to make the vehicle comfortable to operate in a larger range of environments while maintaining crew comfort. The overpressure system enables the T-120 to operate within chemical or nuclear environments relatively effectively. The combined result of these systems is to allow for the T-120 to operate with high crew comfort and morale in a wide variety of environments, as an aspect of making the combined vehicle as combat effective as possible.

Contract
A single unit of the T-120 Goldhorn Exploitation tank is available for a value of NS$ 5,400,000, with domestic production rights currently unavailable for purchase. Purchase of a T-120 will provide the purchaser with a full complement of armour and software systems, and purchase of more than five hundred will allow for a steep discount on spare parts in the future.

The T-120M export variant is available for NS$ 4,400,000, and is delivered without Rota armour, Marble ERA, and with the computer systems left for the the installation of the purchaser's own systems.

To who it may concern,
Your order for 200 units of the T-110A has been reviewed by our board of directors. After due consideration, your order had been ACCEPTED. Your account with us has been debited appropriately, though we advise that your total costs will come to NS$ 1,100,000,000 rather than NS$ 2,000,000. As your payments have been received, delivery of your purchased equipment is underway. We also advise you that as we will be delivering to a warzone, we expect your nation to acquire the appropriate shipping capabilities, as our maritime insurance policies do not permit us to knowingly send our delivery vessels into an active warzone. We will inform you of any delays that may occur in production.

We hope that you find our products suitable for your needs in all military matters, and thank you for your business.

Sincerely,
Thomas Novanst

We in the Free Kingdom Armed Forces are pleased as always with the work of Erotan Heavy Engineering (which is after all the manufacturer of many of our T-95s and BMP-3s). We would like to purchase a supply of Marble ERA armor to be used on our BMP-3s and T-95s operating in certain high-value theaters.
