Granite-III Explosive Reactive Warding Armour

Granite-III Installation on a T-105BV
Summary
Granite-III is the latest development of Lubyakan explosive reactive armour (ERA) technology. Incorporating magical elements into the very fabric of construction, Granite-III is designed to protect against threats both convetional and magical in nature. Granite-III can be mounted on any vehicle capable of mounting standard ERA blocks, and in the same manner, granting untold flexibility in its application. For the military force facing the possibility of magic or other applications of non-standard physics, Granite-III is one of the finest tools available for negating such threats to their vehicles.

Development
Granite-III is a development off of previous iterations of the Granite Explosive Reactive Warding Armour, which was itself a branch of the Dominion’s Marble ERA project. Marble had originally begun as an element of the Dominion’s continued attempts to effectively combine magic and technology into a superior combination of the two factors. The Marble project was exceptionally successful, providing a product that was simultaneously as powerful as conventional ERA technologies, but significantly lighter. Marble also allowed multiple layers of ERA to be stacked in each brick, dramatically increasing the multiple hit capability of the armour.

At the same time as Marble was being developed, other power in Borealias had begun mass production of various forms of magical weaponry, including blink shells, and cluster spell munitions. These devices presented a new form of threat to Lubyakan vehicles, aircraft, and ships that conventional defence mechanisms would provide little to no resistance to. The Dominion lacked the magically capable population to successfully compete in a purely magical arms race. As a result, the Dominion turned increasingly to magical-technological fusions to close the gap.

Marble ERA’s main breakthrough had been the creation of orichalcum, a material capable of maintaining the stockpiled energy of a magical spell, and then releasing it at a set point. When turned to the role of ERA, the technology was simple as the material only had to release a surge of energy upon a sufficiently strong impact. Developing a counter to Herdite magical weapons would require the material to release a specific spell, rather than a surge of energy. Furthermore, the material would have to release the spell only upon encountering a magical spell that it could disperse.

Through significant expenditure of resources, Granite-I Reactive Warded Armour (RWA) was created. However, Granite-I had significant limitations. The single largest was that Granite-I was ineffective as standard ERA, and it required significant numbers of blocks to be effective against most magical attacks. Granite-II managed to resolve some of the issues by dramatically increasing the energy density of the material, enabling a healthy mix of standard ERA and RWA bricks to be mounted on a vehicle, providing full spectrum protection against both conventional and magical threats.

Characteristics
Granite-III is the first of the Granite line to deserve the title of ‘Explosive Reactive Warded Armour’ (ERWA). Granite-III provides--for the first time--truly equal protection against conventional and magical threats. The Granite-III block is capable of determining whether a threat requires the simple surge of energy, or the more concentrated specialised discharge of a counterspell. More impressively, Granite-III is capable of specialising its counterspell discharge to the nature of the threatening spell. This development enables Granite-III to be much more efficient than prior RWA technologies, allowing a single block to provide multiple discharges against both conventional and magical threats. This high multiple hit capability provides substantial endurance for a vehicle equipped with Granite-III ERWA, enabling it to operate for long periods without the need to reapply ERWA without any noticeable weight difference from more conventional ERA systems.

Granite-III consists of tightly packed layers of orichalcum infused material. The main difficulty was in the creation of sufficiently nuanced spell that could perform all the necessary requirements. Once the spell had been developed, it could be cast en masse on industrial quantities of orichaclum, which could then be processed and integrated into the material of choice. With ERWA, the material is normally an explosive of some kind, the detonation of which will provide additional energy for the spell to utilise. As the majority of the energy is redirected into the spell, a Granite-III brick can be mounted on surfaces that normally could not bear the brunt of such The material is then appropriately layered and formed into classic ERA ‘bricks’, covered in a protective weather resistant coating, before being prepared for shipment.

Contract
Granite-III is generally sold at cost of approximately NS$ 80,0000 a vehicle, with a margin of error depending on the vehicle. Unfortunately, domestic production rights of Granite-III can not be issued for reasons of state security. However, any bulk purchaser of Granite-III may request Lubyakan expert assistance in integrating the material into their military structure.
