Federatsiy-class Battlecruiser

Image

OVERVIEW

From the beginning of the 20th century, the old Kingdom of Lauzannia ruled the waves of the Black Sea with the Svoboda-class battleships as well as the impressive Lauzannia. However, the ravages of World War 2 and the Western powers leaving Lauzannia to the Warsaw Pact and COMECON lead to the Lauzanne People's Navy becoming one of the premier naval powers of the Pact, second to the USSR. Post-Refusal War, the now-Federal Republic's LMDF was in a confusing situation where it had initially taken as many ships destined for Russian scrapyards as possible, leaving the reborn LMDF as the primary Black Sea power once more, but this time they had few, if any indigenously designed ships.

The Federatsiy-class was launched in the late 2010's, it's construction suspended by the Spring War diverting funds towards the Army and Air Force. Commissioned in 2020, the ship is as much a statement towards the other Black Sea nations as it is a continuation of Lauzannean shipbuilding tradition. At 17,000 tons at full load, it is the heaviest surface combatant within the Black Sea, and is only matched by the Russian Kirov-class ships.

The entire ship has been constructed with experience working on the Pikarel-class corvettes for signature reduction and missile transportation. To reduce weight, a composite superstructure and radar mast were utilised to lower the ship's center of gravity and allow it more stability in rough seas. A newly designed hull minimises overall noise, adding a large bow sonar for detection of submarines and torpedoes. The Federatsiy is also constructed in blocks, easing the strain on local industry to both build and assemble the entire warship.

For armaments, the flagship of the Lauzannean Navy does not disappoint. Taking the AK-130-1A system slated for the Admiral Ardelean-class Frigate, the AK-130-2A system sports the same twin-barrel armament as the AK-130 in a new automated low-profile mount, capable of interfacing with the ship's fire control radars. However, in an emergency the system can be manned and utilised electro-optically. However, the centerpiece of the Federatsiy-class is it's unmatched 184 vertical launch cells, with 8 near the middle for close range defence with quad packed missiles, the other 176 missiles located in the immense prow of the ship. With many of the missile tubes being strike-length, the ship boasts an impressive capability to be loaded for anti ship, land attack or anti aircraft work, forming an immense dome of protection around any naval asset. For self defence, the Federatsiy-class uses a modernised Kashtan CIWS in the stern, with two rotary 30mm cannons backed by 8 guided missiles for defending the ship from many kinds of munitions or small boats. In the aft of the ship, two CADS-N-1M missile batteries with 21 missiles each provide protection in the rear 180 degrees of the ship, allowing for all-around protection from many threats. With little space for torpedo tubes, some VLS in the stern can be reserved for anti-submarine missiles, should the need arise or ASW cover be insufficient.

However, for all it's combat potential, the ship would hardly be worthy of the name if it did not have sensors and a combat system to match. Designed for Lauzannean ships, the various sensors are all unified under the GL-MCS 3000 system. With modularity in mind, the system is scalable to the various warships in the Lauzannean fleet, sharing architecture with the smaller ships in the fleet and allowing for the sharing of target data, the sensor picture within the fleet and the engagement of multiple targets at once. With the ability to control up to 16 missiles simultaneously along with engaging up to 16 targets, along with tracking of up to 1,000 overall targets within it's combat system. These can range from aircraft, to missiles, ships and submarines.

Fitted with a reliable COGAD system rather than a more exotic CODLAG or IEP propulsion keeps the costs lowered on the ship, keeping it's availability and readiness up.

In terms of sensors, firepower and speed, the Federatsiy is unmatched from it's older Soviet and Russian contemporaries, packing an immense 184 VLS cells from which to carry long range SAMs, anti ship and land attack cruise missiles, or ASW missiles in equal measure. With powerful X and S-band radars for target acquisition and detection, supported by a powerful bow and flank sonar arrays allows the Federatsiy-class to provide long range air defence, ASW and AShW weapons to bear against almost any kind of target.

Good sensors, a high flank speed and extremely powerful armaments make the Federatsiy-class a stand-out ship for any fleet it is attached to.

Pikarel-class Corvette

Postby Lauzanne » Wed Feb 16, 2022 7:22 am

Pikarel-class Corvette

Image

OVERVIEW

The Lauzannean navy for most of it's history has been the premier Black Sea naval power, a position necessitated by it's large coastline and hostile naval powers that shared the waters with it. To this end, the corvette has always been the backbone of securing Lauzanne's territorial waters, emphasised by the older Morgen-class corvette. However, it's old and limited sonar, limited endurance, large signature and noisy capabilities coupled with a lack of hangar to sustain a helicopter at sea lead to the development and deployment of the newer Pikarel-class.

Developed towards the 2000's and launching in 2010, the first ship was built around the same time as the Federatsiy flagship to modernise the navy. The Pikarel quickly distinguished itself by being faster and better armed, boasting superior sensors and reduced signature for a minimal increase in weight and manning requirements. Five have been constructed since, with seven more on order to replace the last of the Morgens.

Of the five produced, four use a conventional CODOG system, with the fifth of the Improved Pikarel-class equipped with an IEP system to both quieten the ship and also test the system for the later Admiral Ardelean-class Frigates. The other seven on order are intended to be equipped for such a system. The IEP system boasts increased endurance and signature reduction, allowing for decoupling the engines from the shafts as the greatest source of noise emitted by the ship.

the Pikarel-class is the first recipient of the modular GL-MCS 3000 combat system. Sporting an open architecture, new electronically scanned array sensors, a fully digital computing system and superior display systems allows for a streamlined method to track up to 200 targets, able to steer 2 simultaneous weapons to targets. Coupled with a newer larger sonar and towed array, the ship is a capable ASW combatant with the ability to function independently.

For armaments, the Pikarel mounts the same AK-176 76mm gun as it's predecessor, along with the same 533mm torpedoes shared by the rest of the navy's ships and submarines. The old Osa missiles were replaced with Tor launchers amidships, replaced by an 8-cell VLS on the Improved Pikarel. In the stern, a 16-cell VLS system is located, allowing for a variety of missiles to be used by the Pikarel. A Kashtan-L CIWS provides protection from enemy missiles, and two heavy machine guns round out the weapons selection.

For ASW operations, two MH-2N helicopters can be carried, but typically only one is used, along with servicing happening inside the hangar.

Cheap, fast and capable, the Pikarel is a staple of any prospective navy.

Beluga-Class Attack Submarine

Postby Lauzanne » Fri Feb 25, 2022 4:57 am

Beluga-class Attack Submarine

Image

OVERVIEW

Building off the successes of the prior Helianthus-class SSK from the 80's, the Lauzannean navy formally tendered a desire to replace the aging submarine fleet of Helianthus and Ange-class SSGs with newer submarines, given the near on 40 year technological gap between the last class and it's successor. Although design work wasn't promising for an indigenous submarine in terms of improvement, the shocking news of the AUKUS agreement and the cancellation of the Australian Attack-class presented an ample opportunity.

With an agreement reached through the French, the now-designated Beluga-class was to build off of the Shortfin Barracuda design. Leveraging it's large battery bank, X-fin layout, smaller beam than the Helianthus-class and improved diesel generators, along with all-new isolation technology to isolate the two decks and all the machinery with rubber gives the design a significant noise reduction compared to it's predecessor. Use of new generators with far more power allows the submarine to surface for only a few minutes per day to recharge batteries. Although it may be seen as a weakness, there is little a navy can do to acquire, identify and attack a target within such a span of time.

For armament, the Beluga carries 20 weapons of varying kinds as the situation requires, with four 533mm torpedo tubes located in the flanks. Sonar is provided by a large conformal array that is very sensitive, a large improvement over the cylindrical sonars used by the earlier Ange and Helianthus boats. Berthing is provided for 60, along with additional space for up to 15 commandos as the situation requires. A detachable lockout chamber is also present for using a swimmer delivery vehicle.

With a long range, high submerged endurance, low indiscretion rate, varied weapons and extreme quiet, the Beluga is the underwater shield of Lauzanne's waters.

Admiral Ardelean-class Frigate

Postby Lauzanne » Tue Mar 15, 2022 7:32 am

Admiral Ardelean-class Frigate

Image

OVERVIEW

From the 70's through to the 80's, the Lauzannean navy has relied primarily on the older Deva-class Frigates and the Admiral Constantinesca-class Destroyers. With the rise of the Federatsiy in the 2000's, it had become apparent to the Navy staff that a new kind of ship was needed to better interface with the Federatsiy and lessen maintenance costs on hulls that would be near on 40-50 years after their launch when the new ship arrived. Although refit work was carried out on the Admiral Ionesca destroyer with the French-made SYLVER VLS, the cost was too great for the benefits of new missiles. Thus, the Admiral Ardelean-class was announced in 2013.

Delays caused by the Spring War lead to the launch of the lead ship Admiral Ardelean only occurring in 2019, two years after it was slated to have been launched. Under the current white paper, the Admiral Ardelean-class is slated to be 8 ships strong, all launched and commissioned by 2030. The ship will compliment the Pikarel-class and the Admiral Lagunesca-class destroyers.

When designing the Admiral Ardelean-class, it was deemed necessary to make the ship utilise Independent Electric Propulsion, akin to the Improved Pikarel-class ships that were coming out of the shipyards during the Spring War. This allows for greater fuel efficiency, along with making the ship quieter when dealing with submarines, as it's primary role is ASW within the 2030 fleet structure. A healthy amount of VLS cells were added to the design to allow for significant air defence and anti-shipping capability, with the missile loads able to be changed depending on the mission at hand.

The brains of the ship is the GL-MCS 3000 system, refined from experience on the Federatsiy and scaled to fit on the smaller ship. The Admiral Ardelean-class can track 400 targets at any given time, and is able to control 10 missiles independently to their targets. This modular system combined with the new AESA radars sporting Gallium Nitride elements allows for greater precision when detecting and tracking surface and aerial targets, combined with new sonars to track and destroy subsurface combatants. The ship also possesses the ability to share targeting data and network with the Federatsiy, Pikarel-class and the future Admiral Lagunesca-class ships to provide a fleet commander with a complete picture of the battlescape.

The IEP system utilises two AE-22KN gas turbines and three ESD-8KN diesel engines to provide both propulsion and hotel electric power to the ship and her systems. Propulsion is provided by two 27,000 shp engines, allowing the ship to cruise and reach flank speed much quieter than her predecessor, the Deva-class.

Armament is provided by a single 130mm dual purpose gun, 8 torpedo tubes, 72 VLS cells of varying lengths, heavy machine guns for defence against suicide boats or other small crafts, and CIWS is handled by a single Kashtan at the stern and two missile CIWS towards the aft. Provisions are made for two ASW helicopters with a hangar.

Admiral Lagunesca-Class Destroyer

Postby Lauzanne » Wed Mar 16, 2022 2:58 pm

Admiral Lagunesca-class Destroyer

Image

OVERVIEW

Despite the Federatsiy's success as the largest surface combatant within the Black Sea, it presented large logistical challenges for the 2000's era Lauzannean government. Hugh maintenance costs and a lack of ships to interface with, along with the older version of it's combat system, lack of easily replaceable parts, being the only one of it's kind and CODAG system lead to an announcement the ship would be retired by 2030, replaced by three as-yet unnamed destroyers.

Christened the Admiral Lagunesca-class when design work was finished in 2021, the ship sought to reduce the cost of the expensive Federatsiy to allow for three ships instead of one. The rationale for such a decision lies purely in numbers. In the 2020 White Paper for the Navy, it outlined a need to keep a consistent presence within the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. Such abilities were hampered by a large ship that could be taken out by a single submarine, with Lauzannean naval capabilities heavily reduced by any kind of maintenance cycle or dry-docking. As the White Paper argued, three ships would allow for one to remain within the Black Sea, one abroad, and one undergoing drydock, repairs or upgrades.

As part of the initial design, it was quickly decided it would share as many components as possible with the Admiral Ardelean-class to boost readiness and reduce overall development costs. VLS systems would be standardised, and the new-generation GL MCS-3000 would be fitted to the ship to give it similar capabilities to the Federatsiy while remaining smaller, lighter and cheaper. Although attracting criticism from some aspects of the press and the more peace-focussed political parties, the decision was later proven to work out cheaper than maintaining the single massive Federatsiy, along with continuing to stimulate Lauzanne's shipbuilding industry further and provide more jobs to Lauzanne's shipbuilding industry.

The Admiral Lagunesca-class destroyer shares many design cues with the smaller Admiral Ardelean-class, with a similar superstructure, shared radars and engines, and similar armaments. The largest difference is overall CIWS armament, mounting a twin-barrel 130mm, and sporting almost twice the VLS capacity. The bow of the ship carries the main gun, 96 VLS cells and a single Kinzhal-2 Missile-based CIWS for protection against missiles, the mid-ships area containing the radars, bridge, CIC and engines. Aft of that is the other 64 VLS cells, along with two Kashtan-L Gun/Missile CIWS and two 30mm turrets for self defence against small boats and other threats deemed too small for the main gun. The rear hosts the drop-down hangar, with a theoretical maximum of helicopters supported being three.

Learning what it could from the Pikarel and the Admiral Ardelean-class, the IEP system has been refined to allow for longer periods of time at flank speed, optimising the system for minimal power loss from the generators to the engines and the systems aboard the ship. Three immense gas turbine engines coupled to four diesel generators give the ship plenty of power to operate sensors and propulsion at the commander's discretion, allowing for high speeds and large areas scanned by the new radars.

The brains of the Admiral Lagunesca-class is an incrementally updated GL-MCS-3000 system. Fusing the data from the various sensors on board the warship to give the CIC a complete picture of the battlespace, the system can interact with any Pikarel and Admiral Ardelean-class ships to co-operatively determine threats, engage targets and maintain a wide sensor footprint. The system matches the first generation system on the Federatsiy, being able to track up to 1,000 individual objects such as ships, munitions and aircraft. The Lagunesca can track 20 targets simultaneously, and control up to 16 missiles at any one time. This ability allows the ship to provide tracking information to other ships in the fleet, allowing for less chance of successful saturation attacks.

For hangar space, an area aft of the rear VLS has a drop-down hangar for deployment of 2 aircraft, however 3 full size helicopters can be stored. Plans are in place to procure a drone helicopter to increase overall capacity.

Delfin-class Missile Submarine

Postby Lauzanne » Sun Jul 17, 2022 3:51 pm

Delfin-class Missile Submarine

Image

OVERVIEW

With the Beluga-class submarines accepted into service and undergoing construction, the Naval design teams turned their eye to replacing the Ange-class SSG. Although many argued that the Beluga-class could do it's job with superior missiles compared to the old P-500 and P-1000's, the introduction of the Ballista SRBM opened opportunities for the Navy. Currently undergoing construction is the first ship of the fleet in Lauzannean service, the S-107 Delfin.

Based on an enlarged Beluga-class, the designers added to the length, beam and height to ensure the new missiles could fit. Also convinced of the ability of the Nachmerean Hammerhead missiles, a system was devised to allow for a quick swap-out of the launch cells to allow one Ballista SRBM or three Hammerhead cruise missiles per tube, for a maximum of 24 Ballista missiles or 72 Hammerhead missiles. The additional space also allowed for LOX tanks to use an AIP system, increasing the Delfin-class' underwater endurance to two weeks at five knots. Shared components allowed for a reduction in development costs.

in Lauzannean doctrine, the Delfin's main role is to engage large surface ship groupings, provide precision missile fires off the shore of a given nation, and project power within the Black Sea. Ideally supported by a Beluga-class and fed information from other ships and airborne assets.

Quiet and cost-effective yet packing an immense punch for it's size, the Delfin-class is an unconventional Lauzannean ship in an increasingly unconventional world.
