"It will have to go in waves. We could use that street near the Ministry of Defence as a rendez-vous point. Well.. at worst we will have to walk some 20 miles. But it's better then getting blown up here."

Meanwhile at the Ministry of Defence the lieutenant and a soldier stepped forward. "We are going to talk to them" The soldier grabbed a white rag that was tied around a broomstick. The captain nodded "God speed !" Slowly they crept from behind the wall of a building and started walking. Every second, every step scared the hell out of them.

" I still like your idea. However, noticed that unless we can manage to pull those Anti-Tank guns, when we get there, it will be like taking a knife to a gunfight ? "

"That's indeed the problem. But unlike they plan on blowing up the entire inner city with every citizen around the tanks there are pretty damn useless for them. And.. I don't think that they will be looking forward to having to do that."
The officer looked at the desk for a moment and called a soldier "Phased withdrawal. I want everyone to start withdrawing slowly."

" Let us atleast wait for the Marines to land. " commented Andrew, pointing to the rapidly approaching landing crafts.

"That's a very good idea" the officer nodded.

Meanwhile at the street close to the Ministry. A lieutenant called out to the officer, a colonel, that stood before his men and the tanks with an outraged look on his face. The mean had their rifles pointing down. "Sir.. let us talk on neutral ground !"

"Come closer.. we will talk here." The colonel responded. He looked rather nervous and agitated.

Coetzee went down to get Smuts, Kruger and Maxime. And the soldiers began to withdrawal. Yielding piece by inch and constantly giving each other cover.

Meanwhile in the street the situation was getting increasingly tense. "Sir.. I urge come and talk to us.
"You come here.. " was the only response.

The soldiers came closer. "We are unarmed". The colonel looked them in the face "You filthy traitors !" and smacked the soldier with a water bottle.. breaking his nose. While saying some more words that should not be said in a decent company The soldier fell back into the arms of his superior that quickly carried him off.

The other lieutenant had seen it all and the incident caused a shock amongst the men. He walked to a truck and quickly opened a box in the back of it. He got out a grenade. "What the fuck do you think you're doing ?!" His captain asked him. "I am going there.. and if they try something I blow him up when he gets me !" The captain responded "Are you fucking nuts ?"

"Sometimes we need martyrs !" and he pushed the captain away and began to walk to the tanks. Holding his hand clenched. Hoping that they wouldn't fire.

Slowly the men began to trickle into the tunnel. It was cool and damp in that tunnel and they made relatively slow progress. "How long is that thing ?" Coetzee asked the officer. " A couple of miles. It's part of a system. I can say with honesty that I have seen most of it."

Meanwhile the lieutenant approached the tanks and the colonel looked at him. "Sir.." the lieutenant said "You don't want to fight your own men. Join the people."
The colonel looked up to a soldier on a tank, sitting behind his machinegun "Shoot him !" The soldier seemed to ignore the order. "Shoot him !" the colonel repeated the order. Suddenly the soldier, a young corporal, jumped off the tank. Immediately there were two MP's there grabbing him and dragging him the sidewalk. The officer looked at him "You just ruined your life !" He turned to another soldier sitting on a tank to the right of him "Shoot him !"

The lieutenant looked him straight in the eye. The young soldier looked back and suddenly put down his machinegun and jumped off the tank. The colonel drew his gun in a fit of rage and pointed it at the lieutenant. 'You vokken bastard... !" He clicked his trigger.

"Yes.. there seems to be a program for that too" the officer grinned "I'll inform you when it becomes army fashion."

Meanwhile in the street...
The gun jammed. Now being severely enraged the colonel aimed again.. it jammed.. and jammed again. Suddenly a shot cracked and the colonel collapsed. A soldier standing more to the back had aimed his rifle at him and pulled the trigger. The two MP's wanted to release their prisoner and arrest the shooter when suddenly a couple of soldiers attacked them.. beating them with their rifle butts and their naked firsts.

"We are with you, lieutenant." The arrested gunner said. The lieutenant sighed in relief and started walking back while the men got on their tanks. They left the beaten military policemen and the severely wounded colonel on the pavement.

On the other side there was a sigh of relief and some cheers. The soldiers had expected a massacre but this was a turn of events they couldn't have expected. The lieutenant came back. In his hand he held the grenade. "Fortune favours the bold.. and from time to time the stupid." He grinned. Suddenly he bursted out in tears. "Fuck..." he whispered. "I am still alive !"

"Same here.. it has been a while. This is something new for me." The officer was clearly amused. "If you ever have the time.. take some time to study these caves. I can assure you: it's worth it. It always influences me in my real work."

"Impressive isn't it." The officer pointed at it. "There are a lot more of these here. In my daily occupation I am a glassblower. And so was my father.. and so was his father. God's willing my grandson will be too one day."

The officer signalled his men to get down. He aimed his rifle further down the cave.

Meanwhile.. in the old city troops were taking over the Ministry of Defence.. finding that van de Wijdeveen had fled. But his office proved to be a treasure trove of information.

They began to move faster. Suddenly there was light in a cave next to them. There was an exit to the Bay.

The officer walked out first. "Alright.." He said... " A small prayer would be in order. Do you see that rock at the other side of the Bay ? If there is something on that sees us.. we'd done for. But if we follow these stepping stones here we will reach a small pier and there we can get on a pathway."

The officer had clearly walked here before. They progressed quickly over the rocks. Only once did a soldier seem to slip but was helped up again by one of his comrades. Finally they saw a small pier appear.
