"That was one of the plans of the reforms of government. More decentralisation as it is now made possible because of modern communication systems. Well.. the important news is that we have elections and referendums coming up. Both local and national - parliamentary elections, regional elections and local elections and then the referendums about the monarchy, left-hand traffic and constitutional reforms... so you will be kept busy for some time. If the results are positive you would have to attend a coronation and learn to drive on the wrong side of the road.."

"You suddenly fell asleep last night. No one remembers the time but you were exhausted. Right now it's 10 o 'clock in the morning so you have been the realms of dreams for quite some time." Pik had a smile on his face. "Let's see for the radio shall we ?" He said to Sarah.. I wonder what today's news is...."

"I myself do not see major reasons to need to change the sides of the road which are driven on, except spend time and money repainting the road, changing the signs around... Well, if you don't mind, I believe I should return to the house to pick up some final gear and my son." said Andrews.

"A very good idea. Maybe you could take him to the coast. It's not as warm as it is in the interior or you could play safe and take him to the National Park." The Major put down his glass and shook Andrew's hand.

"Well, he shall be actually staying with me in the H.Q. we are currently setting up, it is pretty comfortable and we even plane to put some natural vents." said Andrews, shaking his hand before turning out of the barrack and jumping onto the Bushmaster which had been waiting for him, heading in the direction of the house.

The Major went back to work. Suddenly his phone rang. "Major Grootman, 14th on Foot." He was surprised as he normally couldn't called on this phone by someone without military identification. "Den Uyl here... is Andrews still with you ?" He immediately recognised the voice.

"No, your Excellency, he left for the house to pick up his son. They have found a more definitive base." The Major replied.
"Then he needs to be called and informed that he is called to the States-General to receive his knighthood. It will be done by a commission in absence of the King. Could he be informed ? There is also some important news for him and he needs to be told in person."

"Yes.. your Excellency.. I will see to it that he is informed right away. Have a good day, your Excellency." The Prime Minister reprociated the greeting and hung up.

"Captain.." The Major said. "Get me Andrews on the line when you can... I have got some news for him."

The Captain who was standing in the doorway saluted and walked to the radio operator that would connect the Major's phone to Andrews' car phone.

However, the Bushmaster was already at the house, the driver having turned off the Radio and engine, bored of all the radio chatter coming out of it while he began to loaded some weapon crates onto the trucks.

Instead of waiting, Andrews walked up to the front door of the house, knocking on the door before opening it.

"Is anyone there?" he asked, out loud.

"Major Grootman, here, sorry to disturb you but the Prime Minister just called. He tried to contact you but you didn't seem to have heard your phone rang. He wants you in Handelshaven. "

"Not right now, I shall return to the house after the Bushmaster is loaded up and I've found my son.." answered Ryan, knocking on the Kitchen door and opening it.

"I will call back later but it's about your knighthood ceremony. It will be done by the Prime Minister before the joint Houses of the States-General. So they really want you up there.." The Major hung up.

Andrew put his phone away, and cursed. As if I hadn't yet made it clear enough that it wasn't going to happen, he thought. He walked into the Kitchen shaking Sarah's hand and piking his son up.

"Thank-you for having looked after him, I hope the extra problem wasn't too much of a nuisance..." he added.

"He wasn't a nuisance at all." Sarah smiles. "It's just the heat that's troubling him. It would be a good idea to take him into the mountains, to the National Park or to the Coast. Wherever he can cool down because it will only get warmer now."

Pik came back in and shook his Andrews' hand - he had a slightly surprised look on his face: "Congratulations, Andrews. Your name was on the news. The States-General has awarded you with the Distinguished Service Medal, the rank of Knight Commander in the Great Order of the Commonwealth and proclaimed you as Lord Lieutenant of the Uplands making you a peer in the Senate. For your services to the nation - they said."

"Wow... how could I explain it.... Well.. you have been awarded with the highest decorations this country knows for services done to it and they haven't been awarded for... generations. A Lord-Lieutenant runs the entire region, he also sits in the Senate. It's by order of the States-General and thus by order of the King..." Pik said. "Here.. it's in the papers." Pik handed him the local newspaper.

Andrews began to shake his head, obviously not too happy.

"I have never run a company, let alone a bloody Region, and now they want to put me into high level politics? If anyone here deserves medals, well it isn't me, all I did was simply give orders and in most of these did not even get the chance to use my weapon. Other people deserve these, I didn't single handedly shoot down a massive airliner full of bombs which was heading straight towards a government building." he said.

"They need a symbol, Andrews. It's not like a Lord Lieutenant does much of the running. That's up to the regional council's which is headed by a Lord Lieutenant. You have done more for this country then you probably know. Look outside for a moment." Pik took Andrews to the window. "People all over the country now know your name. They know what you and your men did to protect this house, to protect the village and of how bravely they fought during the Revolution. What they need is.. a symbol and there isn't a single general or NSF officer that can qualify for that job."

"You can qualify for it in my terms, so could the Major and the Captain. They have also defended this very same spot, remember? Big people don't think about the ones who do the most of the work, they only think of the one who seems to be commanding and giving out the orders." he answered.

"They too will probably be receiving medals but it's my feeling that this has a lot more to do with what you did during the Revolution. It's the symbolism that is apparently important here."

"All right, how long will the trip and the stay take? Because depending on that, I may have to put my 2nd in Command in charge of my men. Let alone to the fact that I was planning in helping in getting our H.Q. up and running..." he added.

Ït's a lot safer now. And you could take the train to Handelshaven which would be a couple of hours. But expect to be away for a couple of days in total. You can take Maxime with you, I am sure he would like to see the coast again." Pik said.

Mrs. van Oosten was standing in the doorway. "Don't worry about the train ticket, You can leave at 2. Pik.. can you look up the time table for me. Then I will arrange the tickets and the hotel. But I expect that Den Uyl has had that covered. Still.. I am going to have a word with him to see whether that is the case." She turned around and walked to the library. Pik following her and checking the timetables at the personal computer. "Should I place the order ma'am ?" She nodded. "Just a second." She was seen pushing a couple of buttons. "The classification number of the family account." She explained.

"What exactly do they need me there for? Because if it was to only give me a title, I wouldn't expect it to take many days, as you say yourself I could be gone for a few. But yes, I shall take my son with me as you have suggested. I known the situation has calmed down, but could you please contact me if anything comes up?" said Ryan, the last part directed at Pik.

"Because it will be done before the camera's in a meeting of joint Houses of the States-General I guess. People here take their time for ceremonies and I think that it is also a good idea if you get some rest - also for Maxime's sake. He can't handle the heat." Pik put down the paper "And of course I will contact you when something happens. You have a great number of people here looking out for you and a lot of those are the ones from which you might not immediately expect it."

"Thank-you for your help. Yet I do not really fancy sitting or standing for hours on end discussing the future of a Nation I am not even a citizen of, and which I do not know of the needs of the people or any politics, national or foreign alike." he added.
