Legends of the Shadow [FT; Character RP; Closed]

Postby Thrashia » Mon Dec 06, 2010 1:14 am

There lies a secret at the heart of the Imperial Palace on Pol-Kamra, homeworld of the Thrashian Empire. For more than three generations, the Imperial Knights have publicly safeguarded the reigning Emperor and his family, using the Force as their ally. However, like the color of their armor, the Imperial Knights are a red herring for which any wishing to harm the Imperial Family would be distracted. For it is from the shadows that the true guardians lie in wait, the silent and deadly Shadow Guard.

Selected for their strength and affinity for the Force and its application to combat, they are the elite. It is their sole purpose in life to safeguard the Imperial Family from the shadows; a secret cabal of men and women who have devoted themselves to Death. For by their deaths may the Emperor be kept safe and their duty fulfilled.

That is the purpose of the Shadow Guard. Nothing more, nothing less.

-=-=-=-=-

The combat training arena was wide and formed in the shape of a circle. Various traps and hidden dangers covered its floor and walls. A single misstep could lead to a quick and ugly death. But that was the least of any combatant's worries when spending time in the arena. Above the arena was a single viewing platform, from where the senior members of the Shadow Guard could watch and direct the performance and training of the younger, newer members that joined their ranks.

Kandar, known by his rank of “Shadow Leader,” watched with interest as one of his newer apprentices fought the various challengers that had been provided for him to face for today's challenge.

Besides the automated traps, which were deadly, there were more than a dozen assassin droids in the arena armed with everything from exotic to mundane weapons. They were the latest design of combat droid for the use in assaulting high profile personages and killing them with extreme prejudice.

To his apprentice, Adaric, they were little more than toys.

Wearing the black knit armor of the Shadow Guard, Adaric twisted below a sudden plume of super heated plasma, barely escaping the radius by which his skin would have been scorched and his bones turned to ash. His jumped carried him away and into the waiting arms of three assassin droids. Two were armed with blaster rifles and the third with a pair of whirling lightsabers.

Using the Force, Adaric increased his spinning speed and passed beneath the legs of the lightsaber-armed droid. A quick jerk and and foot stomp, and he launched upwards, bringing his lightsaber in a whirling arc that cut the second assassin droid in half. The third opened fire, dousing the area in blaster fire. Adaric deflected it all, aiming some of the shots at the droid he had just passed up, causing several of the bolts to hit it in the back and fall forward.

Smiling, Adaric raised his hand and closed his palm. He reached out with the Force and crushed the third droid like a child would a tin can.

He couldn't celebrate his victory however, as four more droids appeared at his side, armed with melee weapons. On managed to hit the edge of their blades against his right shoulder guard, putting a scratch down its black, mirror-like surface. Cursing, Adaric returned the favor with an upper cut inside the droid's guard, and sliced both its arms and head off.

More droids began to fall before his glowing, gold lightsaber.

“I've never seen him smile like that,” said a voice behind Kandar. He had sensed her coming more than three hundred meters away, but he acted surprised none-the-less when he turned to face her. He fell to one knee and bowed his head in respect.

“Your Majesty honors us by her presence,” said Kandar.

Princess Dheinalia Kushrenada walked forward and stood next to Kandar at the edge of the viewing platform. A look of confusion was on her delicate face as she looked down upon Adaric as he dismembered three more droids whilst jumping over a sudden, gaping pit opened up in the floor with stakes at the bottom of it. A wide, Cheshire-esque smile was on Adaric's face. It was probably the only emotion she had seen on his face in over a year.

Kandar stood up and nodded as the princess looked down upon Adaric. “I know what it is that makes him smile. It is part of what it means to be a warrior. At this moment, right now, anything that does not directly involve him, Adaric will ignore. What he is feeling is not life, nor is it death. But an elusive and deep feeling of extreme happiness.”

“Happiness?” asked Dheinalia, obviously horrified by the prospect that anyone could be happy with the destruction that Adaric was inflicting. The princess closed her eyes and Kandar unconsciously became more tense. It was a carefully kept secret, that the princess had telepathic powers. Nothing too extreme or impressive; however she did have the power to project herself into another's mind and read his thoughts and heart. It would make her a good ruler one day, even if it made Kandar very uncomfortable.

“I see his thoughts, and they are filled with nothing but bloodshed,” said Dheinalia. She was careful not to let Adaric sense her intrusion to his mind. Part of what gave her an advantage when it came to dealing with Force-users was that they had a hard time sensing her power. “How terrible.”

“He is a warrior charge with your protection,” commented Kandar, quietly. He knew better than to argue directly with the princess. She was too sharp. “His abilities with a lightsaber and combat in the Force are commendable.”

Dheinalia turned and faced Kandar, looking deeply into his being. What Kandar saw there was enough to make him stop breathing for a second. The princess was filled with sorrow and regret, almost consumed by it.

“There might have been a time when he need not have learned such things,” whispered Dheinalia.

“Princess?”

She cleared her throat. “Have him come to the audience chamber once he is done. I will speak with him.”

“As you command,” Kandar bowed as Dheinalia walked back out of the arena and into the main halls of the palace. Kandar glanced down to watch as Adaric beheaded the last two assassin droids and dismantled a giant multi-laser turret with a Force crush.

“Just what does her majesty have in mind for you, my boy?” Kandar asked himself aloud.

Adaric had quickly changed and showered after finishing his daily combat routine. His master, Kandar, had been as harsh and critical as ever, pointing out where he had made careless mistakes or taken too many risks. It grated on Adaric's pride to hear all those remarks, as much good they did him. He was already one of the most skilled warriors within the Shadow Guard. Why did he have to listen to an old man grumble about his combat risks? They always worked out, didn't they?

He nervously made his way through the hidden passageways of the Imperial Palace, ones which only the Imperial Family and the Shadow Guard knew the existence of. The Shadow Guard used them to get between their hidden apartments in the under-crofts of the Palace to everywhere else they were needed. No one in the palace except the Princess and her two personal maids knew that the Shadow Guard even existed.

After walking for several minutes through the dimly lit corridors Adaric arrived before the door. He stood there for several minutes, thinking about what was on the other side of that door. He always had to prepare himself mentally before going before the Princess. When he had first been brought to train and become a member of the Shadow Guard, he had been introduced to the Princess. It had been she who had given him his name.

When joining the Shadow Guard, you gave up any life you had before. Part of that was choosing a new name. Adaric had been sad, only nine years old and without a name. Then the princess had appeared before him and smiled like a cherub.

“Well, if you cannot think of a name then I shall give you one,” the seven year-old princess had declared. “Since you are to be my protector, then I will have to give you a strong name. My Papa told me about a story with a hero who saved a bunch of people! Adaric! That's the name! From now on you will be named Adaric! Whenever I am in trouble, I will know that you will save me.”

The memory made Adaric smile for a moment, cracking his cool, calm and collected thoughts. He quickly pushed the memory back into the recesses of his mind and focused on the task at hand. With a deep breath he pushed open the door and entered.

The audience chamber was empty of courtiers and members of the People's Assembly who usually flocked to the room. It had obviously been cleared out on the princess's order. The hall was covered in mementos of the Thrashian Empire's past glories from as far back in time as Ancient Terra. At the far end was the raised dais and the throne. Sitting atop it like a delicate angel was the Princess.

Her smooth, full face was calm and betrayed none of her thoughts as she watched Adaric walk forward and humbly bow ten feet from her throne as etiquette demanded. He held his pose, knowing that he would be recognized whenever the Princess wished to acknowledge him. He noted with curiosity that Rose, the Princess's personal lady-in-waiting, was standing behind the throne, looking at him with a deep frown.

Had he done something wrong?

“Rise, Shadow Guard,” said the Princess in her best authoritative voice.

“You wished to see me, Majesty?”asked Adaric, rising to his feet.

“Yes. I watched you today during your combat training.”

“I hope it pleased you, Majesty,” said Adaric. He inwardly jumped for joy. To think that the princess would see him in training when he was at his best form! She must have been impressed! Who wouldn't be?

“It did not please me in the slightest,” said Dheinalia coldly.

Adaric froze. Had he heard right? He looked up, confused, at the Princess. She was looking at him with no emotion on her face, except a deep look of disappointment. Disappointment!? About what!?

“I apologize, Majesty, if I have displeased you. I only live to protect you.”

“You live for combat and the taking of life, Adaric,” said the Princess. “I could see it on your face as you fought today. Every movement and swing was done with a horrible smile upon your face.”

“I-I-I...don't know...”

“You do not know anything of compassion. You know nothing of mercy,” said the princess. Every word was like a cold knife being burried in Adaric's flesh, digging deeper, towards his heart.

She continued. “From this day forward I am ordering you to never again kill anyone or anything needlessly. Life is precious and you must learn to treasure it. I've seen that you cannot learn these things here, so I have ordered that Master Kandar send you on a journey to find these things.”

“What?!” Adaric was so surprised that he spoke out of turn. The princess raised an eyebrow and frowned at him. Adaric immediately shut his mouth and knelt on one knee.

“I've made arrangements,” continued Dheinalia. “You will travel to the planet Argos in the Victoria System. There is a woman there whom you must find and learn from. Once you have learned how precious life is and to treasure it as such, then you will be allowed to return.”

Adaric seethed inside. Learn how precious life is? Whom do you think I treasure above all else? Who is it that I serve so faithfully, honing my skills every day in order to protect her?

When Adaric raised his head, his face was completely blank and void of any emotion. He even disseminated his thoughts so that the Princess could not read them without entering his conciousness, an act that he knew she would never do.

“As your Majesty commands,” Adaric said.

With a small bow, he turned and left.

Dheinalia fell back into her chair and a single tear came to her eye. She had to do it. If she did not make him learn now, Adaric would one day be nothing more than a killing automaton with no emotions. She did not want to lose the soul of the young boy she had met all those long years ago.

“Are you sure about this, my Lady?” asked Rose, coming forward and handing Dheinalia a handkerchief. The princess smiled and took it.

“Yes, Rose I am certain. That woman should be able to teach him, if no one else can. In the mean time, please prepare my baggage for travel. I have been told that our dear Regent, Admiral Thrawn, is finally allowing me permission to visit our new lands in the Beta Quadrant. We will have to leave tomorrow."

"Yes, my Lady."

Fueling Junction AA-14, Beta Quadrant

It was a common feature throughout Thrashian controlled territory that there were fuel stations set up for civilian use, own by either private citizens or subsidized by the government. It wasn't unusual to see any number of Galactic Imperial citizens traveling the routes designated as the safest and easiest by the Imperial Interstellar Traveling Bureau. Thanks to the all pervasive presence of the Imperial Fleet in keeping such vile persons as pirates and ship thieves from plaguing the hyper-lanes, people felt safe. So it seemed natural for the Princess to order her diplomatic vessel to travel along the routes that normal citizens would. She liked to get a feel for what the common people felt and experienced, as she was often kept in an ivory tower and always supervised by attendants that kept most of the outer world a vague shadow to her eyes.

But not this time around.

"My lady, please do not do that again," implored Rose, Dheinalia's personal handmaid. The down-ramp to one of the personal shuttles from the cruiser that the princess was riding on came to a close. Dheinalia lowered the hood of the cloak she was wearing and smiled at Rose. Her handmaid was a pretty woman of middling years. Dheinalia had chosen her because she was still wild in many sorts of ways and had a sixth sense when it came to understanding what Dheinalia wanted and would always cover for the princess.

"Do not worry, I kept my hood up and avoided eye contact with anyone," smiled Dheinalia. She took off the cloak and handed it to Rose who scowled at her mistress.

"You take too many risks. If anyone had seen you or recognized you..."

"Fear not, dear Rose, I can take care of myself. I enjoy these excursions. It lets me get a first hand account for what is happening in the outside world. I would fail a the future ruler of the Thrashian Empire if I did not make an attempt to understand the problems that my subjects face," said Dheinalia, trying to sound as if her excursions were nothing more than research.

It was true that Dheinalia took care to listen to the conversations about problems that people faced while she was moving through crowds, but it was also to fulfill her need for adventure. And it didn't hurt that risking things a bit made her happy and gave her an adrenaline high that nothing else in her closeted life could.

"Be that as it may my Lady, we must return to the ship. Captain Pennocce is getting angry with me for taking so long of the supposed errands that you sent me on," Rose said, berating Dheinalia a bit more for forcing Rose to take responsibility with their cruiser's captain.

"Yes, yes. Let's be off then!" smiled Dheinalia.

A figure stepped further back into the shadows of a small storage building next to the fueling station's main hub. The shadow had spotted the Princess almost as soon as the young woman had stepped off her shuttle craft. It had been child's play to follow her around. He made sure to stay far enough back that the reported powers of the Princess to pick up stray surface thoughts did not detect him as he tailed her. Enough time had been made to attach a small tracking device to the Princesses shuttle, which would then land in her escort cruiser. The trap would be set. The shadow took a small, but powerful communication device from his robes.

"Reporting. Target identified as Princess Dheinalia. Tracking device in place."

"Good...all is going according to plan as I have foreseen," replied a sinister and evil voice. "Return to your post."

"As you command, Master."
