Sovereign Class Starship
The Void
25th November 2400
Captain Robin Sinclair, the Trillian CO of the Starship Freedom, sat in her quarters, sat on the edge of her viewport, on a ledge that was just wide enough for a humanoid to sit on. Resting her head against the edge of the window she flickered over the page in her book, trying to distract herself from the view outside. Even in the High-tech age of Computerized everything, Robin still preferred the good-old-fashioned hardback. All too soon however she couldn't avoid looking out the viewport.
Total Darkness.
The Void as it had been called by Starfleet was more commonly referred to as 'The Night' by the Captain and crew of the Freedom was a vast area of space some several hundred Light-years across and deep completely devoid of stars. To make matters worse there was some strange form of radiation that prevented light from stars outside the void from being seen within. So naturally it caught the attention of Starfleet and the Freedom was dispatched to investigate.
Looking out into the darkness Robyn realized one thing; she was inconsolably lonely.
She had taken a shuttle out the day before, thinking it would give her something to concentrate on. But looking back at her ship, she could barely see it despite being only a short distance away. The only light coming from the viewport lights, the ships running light which illuminated it's name and registry, and of course the warp nacelles, shining bright in the darkness. She took a holopicture of this and intended to get it printed when they got home. Despite this, it still depressed her. And it wasn't just her of course; the entire crew was being affected.
Robyn jerked forward as her Combadge chirped. She plucked it from the armless purple top she was wearing and tapped it.
"Sinclair"
"Captain, We're receiving a transmission from the Starship Soulwolf" Commander Ravencroft reported over the Comm.
Robyn smiled slightly.
"Pipe it through"
Robyn stood up and walked across her room towards the desk on the far side, away from the window. Tearing her eyes away from the disconcerting night, she reached forward and activated the console, forcing a smile.
"Tom"
"Robyn Sinclair" Captain Thomas Hunter replied as his visage appeared on the viewer "Having fun out there?"
"I wish" Robyn muttered.
"Your only out there for another few weeks" Hunter assured her "They've commissioned the Hawking to come out and relieve you on-station, you'll be home by Christmas"
"Good to hear" Robyn smiled "That'll cheer up my crew no end"
"I'm glad" Hunter replied "I'm looking forw..."
Robyn frowned as the communication flickered and disappeared, followed shortly after by the lights in her quarters. Across the ship similar events were taking place, all systems powered down, plunging the interior of the ship into darkness and deactivating all systems, including the Warp Core which completely shut down. On the outside the remaining lights faded, leaving the ship totally dark in the void.
"I know I wanted excitement" Robyn muttered as she groped around in the dark to find a light "But this is not what I had in mind..."
