Absorption or Federation. (FT open)

Postby United Districts of 1 » Sat Oct 30, 2010 9:47 pm

Epilogue 2173-2175
For years the Allied states had sat peacefully. Interrupted occasionally by a skirmish or small conflict. However a rift continued to widen between the two factions sharing UD space. They were the two major ethnic groups of the districts. The first was the Federation of Eden. This group of humans originating from the planet Eden lacks the technology of their counterparts but what they lack in technological power they make up in tactical brilliance. The second faction was the Vasari. A hive minded race of ten foot tall killing machines. In 2174 a pirate raid on a human colony was exposed as a Vasari backed attack. This sparked further tensions between the two races. Months later the fuel was added. A Vasari hive had been gutted by an attack from federation splinter groups. The Vasari fleet followed the splinter group back to the colony Sanctum. Believing it to be a act of war they glassed the colony. The death of thousands was the final blow for the federation. The emergency Eden war council was created to combat the vasari might, the E.E.W.C quickly used the abundant resources of the outer colonies to raise a substantial fleet. In response the Vasari Launched an attack on the colony of Lynus. Lynus is the federations largest producer of liquid oxygen. And so a Federation fleet moved to intercept. This is the turning point of the young war and possibly the UD1 as a whole.

Present day, Geo-synchronies orbit over Lynus colony, Colvara station
"All crew report to combat positions."
The intercom buzzed as klaxons roared throughout the station. The orbital Rail Cannon station was one of the many defending the key colony. In the control room Commodore Ne'vis sat in the large grey chair that was his home. Around him the busied activity of the bridge crew was dwarfed by the massive ships moving quickly about in the vacuum. His relaxation was shattered by the terrified speaking of a young man.

"Sir... They're here"

The massive ships popped into existence with a horrifying red glow. The Vasari had arrived. There fleet was twice the size of the Federations. It was 599,000 miles out and still forming for combat. The federation fired its first volley of Rail slugs at the densely packed vasari fleet. The slugs moved at .9995 percent of light speed. They impacted the alien ships with massive force. A large cruiser was hit dead on. The front of the ship shattered inward while the back was pushed into the void. The cruiser spun around before being engulfed in a ball of blue flame. The same happened to several other craft.

The vasari fleet returned fire. They used much more advanced weapons than the solid slugs of the humans. From the rear of the craft beams of black matter spat out into large globs of blackness. These masses of dark formed into massive disks. Again from the back of the vasari craft came massive spikes. Floated lazily into the black disks. As they disappeared into the disks they reappeared behind the federation fleet. With a burst of light the massive spears of metal punched through the armor of the carriers and missile cruisers that sat at the back of the fleet. Their hulls were punctured like a needle through velvet. By the end of the unavoidable bombardment ten federation craft had been speared.

The Hyper Rail Cannons had been charged and now unleashed their deadly hundred fleet long slugs. The slugs moving at unfathomable speed disintegrated into molten drops of titanium and iron. These drops hit the vasari craft like bullets to the naked hide of fair game. Multiple craft were simply Ionized killing all on board. Others fell apart slowly as their hulls submitted to physics. The vasari fleet was now at half strength and losing more every minute. They retreated to their starting point. The battle was over but the war was still in its infancy.

The Septill didn't use FTL as others would see it, for a split second when the rail discharged, creating the jump conduit though which the ship traveled, it existed at both the destination and the point of origin, and everywhere in between. After that infinitely small period of time the ship existed only in one place again, as it should. It made for very fast travel, but meant that the ship jumping had little to no idea of what they were jumping into. While the jump operator could sense large objects, the size of a small moon or large asteroid being about the smallest, smaller objects like ships, were but smears of paint on a rough wall were to a blind man.

So when the SRS Conducting Breeze appeared in a flash of hard radiation and found themselves in the middle of a fire fight you can imagine their surprise. Well, 'in the middle of' being used loosely. Due to the nature of the Jump Rail jumping too close to the planet can cause the massive amounts of radiation generated by the jump to harm or even destroy ecosystems. But even a few AU from the battle was far too close as ships were hit by hypervelocity slugs tore apart, sending shrapnel shredding out at relativistic speeds all over the system. Combine that with the fact that their entry was less then subtle, and a massive burst of radiation could be considered a danger even at the couple million mile distance, needless to say the ship leader was less then ecstatic about their jump location.

Torrents of super heated gas poured out of the cooling systems on the vanguard cruiser as they struggled to cool the ship for possible high gee maneuvers that would damage the ship should they be attempted under the almost liquid state the outer hull was in after the jump. Fusion engines were powered up and defense field nodes were readied for combat. Energy coursed through the ship as it desperately tried to get battle ready before it was spotted.

"Sir more new contact"
"Is it hostile"
"Unknown"
The heavy cruiser that had just appeared was venting radiation as it did incredible maneuvers. On the stations large 150mm auto cannons began firing at the cruiser. From the remaining carriers swarms of drone fighters were launched. These were little more than metal ball s with an inertia drive and a 50 caliber system. From the station bright blue waves flowed from the Hyper rail cannon gun ports. The amount of radiation put off by the firing of these weapons was massive. Seventy AU's vented from the end of the cannon.

On the planet below debris begun to fall like comets on the cities and towns of the crucial colony. The ion pulse couplings of a cruiser had set their sights on a city of 1,000 people. Closing in on the city it was noticed by the inhabitants of the city. It was to late of course. The large engine component slammed into the dirt. A bright flash of plasma and heat washed over the town. Buildings burst into deadly flame as did people and plant life. Next came the shock-wave strong enough to flip trucks and trains it sheered steel in half like plastic.

Back on the station the alien ship was being hailed. As the Commodore was about to speak a left over vasari boarding craft slammed into the hangar. The klaxons started once more throughout the station. On the monitors you could see the massive aliens rushing the ill prepared hangar crew.

Lt.Ambros readied his rifle and put his weight on his back leg. He heard the screams of those just a inch away from safety. Behind him ten others did the same. One gutsy soldier moved closer to the door. Slowly he moved as though he was in a mine field. The tearing of metal and flesh ended his walk. A large spear had been driven through his skull. The blood dripped onto the floor.

The door slid open and two vasari rushed through. The first shields were dropped in seconds. A shotgun blast sent him to the floor into a pool of green blood. The second whipped up his spear and drove it through a soldier. Impaling him on the wall the vasari turned it's bolt rifle on the humans. The first shot tore through a medics chest. The medic tumbled around with the force of the bolt. The second shot pinned a shotgun toting soldier to the wall by his elbow.

Finally the vasari took a shoulder mounted rail rifle. His exploded into the little amount of brain matter he had. That little amount was now on the floor. The door slid shut and Lt.Ambros heard the hiss of the docking bay being vented into space. On the bridge four soldiers sat dead along with the commodore. Also in the bridge sat two dead vasari each full of holes..

"Warring space, no kidding," the ship-leader scoffed as he read the transmission, "are we cool enough to bring the forward gamma batteries to bear yet?"

"Aye, just about," one of the engineers who was struggling to control the overloaded cooling system said.

"Bring us about, forward gamma batteries to fire up on incoming targets," he barked, looking at the low power display built into his arm rest.

The cruiser turned to face the battle, shrapnel glancing off the defense fields randomly along with the staccato drum of the auto cannon shells. Lances of pure, intense gamma radiation struck out from banks along the front of the cruiser, targeting the drones launched in their direction. While the killing potential of the beams against biological targets was obvious, the sheer amount of heat that the beam striking shielded targets would quickly melt.

"Communications?" The ship leader said as the gamma batteries began firing to shoot down the incoming targets. The fields were holding up against the long range fire from the station for now, but till the jump rail was ready for another jump they were stuck. The fact that the jump operator was still passed out from having to control that much power also hindered them. While the jump operator was in the sensor deprivation chamber no one could access him, mainly because disconnecting him from the jump rail could be very dangerous to both him and the rail itself.

"There's a fault in both the main and secondary array, the cooling process probably damaged the connections."

"Damnit, fix it fast as you can," he cursed, then turned to the gunnery operators, "continue firing on anything sent our direction, hopfully they'll get bored of us and turn to their own problems."
