Nothing For It

Like most stories in this world, this one must begin not at the beginning, but before it. In fact, well before my entry into this affair.

It began with the colonisation of Makuta in the north. It was then, and is now, a wretched island populated by wretched peoples, engaging in the most beastly acts imaginable, and some that are too vile for the mind as well. Yet, despite the brutish state of these aboriginals, they inhabited a land that was most suitable for tobacco and rubber. The Dutch were the first to come into this place, followed by Her Majesty's East Indies Trading Company. We were happy enough to dwell in peace with one another, and I say neither that all we did was right or wrong in the land then, but then the Recent Unpleasantness forced the Dutch to retreat, and there were more important issues to attend to. New Chauseland's men and boys fought the good fight, and eventually repossessed Makuta from the occupiers. Afterwards, the Dutch were in no mood to take it back, and we certainly could not in good conscience leave the poor savages as we had found them. So, we simply annexed the territory, and afforded the inhabitants the benefit of New Chauseland's protection.

In modern times, what with the spirit of irredentism and revolution being spread by villainous bolsheviks, the people grew restless, and believed it to be better to secede. On our side, we had the understanding with the Dutch that control was to be passed over to our party, but the native Makutans rejected this. Some of their more learned types suggested that because the Dutch had not consulted with them, the transfer was invalid. In any case, from perhaps the mid 1950s onward, there has been a great stirring up north, occasionally erupting into conflagrations of arms.

I, Colonel Robert J. Wicliffe, 3rd (Senurapore) Regiment, 8th Division, am responsible for this territory's security.

EDIT: OOC note, feel free to chime in with support or frothing rage.
