The Aiko Island chain is located south of Japan and has had a long history of swapping hands between nations, much to the dismay of the island natives. The Japanese first set foot on the islands in 1787, though they rarely visited the islands as they served no real strategic purpose. The Japanese lost the islands to the Korthian Empire in 1885 during a minor conflict between the two nations. Korthia’s King converted the islands to become a fortress and a port to project more power across Asia, as well as giving his nation’s merchants a place to harbor in during their travels.
Life at the islands was uneventful, though the Korthians and Germans did have a few naval skirmishes near the main island during the first world war. However, at the start of WW2, the Korthian garrison was captured and brutally executed by the Japanese Empire, who then enslaved the natives and turned the islands into fortresses. They constructed airfields, reinforced the harbors, added numerous fixed artillery and AA cannons, and built miles of tunnels underneath the islands in preparation for an invasion that never came.
The Japanese were starved out by the Americans, and were preyed upon by the natives, who had grown tired of their Japanese occupiers.
After Japan’s surrender, the island chain was returned to the newly formed Republic of Korthia, where it was used as a fortified storage facility and refueling base for planes and ships. However, its purpose changed once again when uprisings began in Korthia’s Asian colonies. Korthia’s troops brought captured German weapons, ammunition, and equipment to the island in order to be used for the upcoming campaigns.
It took a brutal and costly three year campaign to put down the numerous guerrilla groups within the Korthian’s territory, but in 1951, most of the colonies had been placed back under the boots of their colonizers. However, the young Republic’s problems were far from over. Many of those within the military, and government itself, yearned for a return to Korthia’s prewar glory and status as a superpower and to have an absolute Monarch in power. The conspirators planned in the upmost secrecy and executed their plans in February of 1953.
The homeland lost contact with nearly a quarter of her garrisons across Asia and received disturbing reports that almost a third of the navy had suddenly vanished from various ports. Facing mounting international criticism for their poor handling of the crisis in Vietnam, the Korthians swept the loss of their men under the rug and wrote the vessels off as “lost in a freak storm with all hands”.
These blatant lies would be proven false when the first of many merchant ships suddenly vanished when they neared the Aiko Islands. The first vessel to disappear was a Kyrainian cargo ship, which failed to appear in Vietnam. Nearly a dozen ships disappeared in the span of a few months and the international community turned to Korthia for an answer. Realizing that their lies could be maintained no longer, the government admitted to the loss and assumed desertion of an unknown number of its military personnel. The Korthians swiftly put together an international task force to investigate the island chain and see who was truly behind the missing vessels…
