The sea raged, but the skies had calmed. Over the last three hours, the volume of missiles streaking through the atmosphere had diminished, with fighters returning gradually to the supercarriers that formed the core of the Alexiandran fleet. The steel-grey surface of the ocean was littered with the detritus of battle: fragments from jet engines, missile guidance fins, oil slicks, propellers. Here and there, a stray body could be seen bobbing amidst the waves. What remained of the Lower Magican High Seas Fleet was withdrawing from the blockade line. Its fighting spearhead blunted, it would surely present an easy target for the packs of Allied hunter-killer submarines in the area. The Alexiandrans had one priority now: destroy as much of the High Seas Fleet as possible before it could reach the relative safety of the archipelago’s straits, infested as they were with communist anti-ship missile installations.
The losses suffered by the Allies, while not catastrophic, were significant. The Alexiandrans had lost at least five vessels of varying sizes, as well as a few dozen pilots. Now that the enemy had forfeited the battlefield, search and rescue operations could begin - specially equipped helicopters and dirigibles began to comb the wreckage, fishing pilots and sailors from the depths. Signals were sent back to the Admiralty in Lockbourne, urging the dispatch of resupply ships and aircraft. To the northeast, Alexiandran combat air patrols were waging a furious campaign of harassment against the retreating fleet. Some communist vessels had been left completely defenceless, with Lower Magican air assets too thinly stretched to ward off the waves of fighter-bombers and interceptors bearing down on them. Many of the craft were so antiquated that they did not possess dedicated anti-air assets aside from deck-mounted machine guns, which were completely useless against supersonic, over-the-horizon missiles.
Meanwhile, far to the north, the leading elements of Ninth Fleet were beginning to enter into missile range of the Lower Magican home islands. The Empire had given its qualified assent to the planned strike, and targets - predominantly military in nature - had already been picked out. The initial volley would consist of about a hundred cruise and ballistic missiles, aimed at known missile silos, airfields, chemical weapons factories and biological warfare labs. Upper Magica had had years to conduct reconnaissance against the communists, and their painstaking work was now paying off; its operatives were able to provide detailed instructions as to where and when each missile should strike.
The first warheads would be ballistic, fired by the fleet’s three nuclear-powered submarines. These would signal the start of the wider bombardment, and this bombardment, in turn, would trigger kinetic strikes from orbit. In the ensuing confusion, SEAD raids into enemy territory would provide cover for Alexiandran and Harrisopian helicopters to press north, delivering special forces teams to more resistant targets.
Far overhead, in orbit, Alexiandra’s fleet of weapons satellites - which had been so heavily taxed in recent years - began to wheel patiently into position. It would take a few hours for them to align correctly with their objectives, during which time the Ninth Fleet would be making its final preparations. Once the satellites were ready, this latter-day blitzkrieg, one of the most technologically advanced offensives Alexiandra had ever conducted, could begin. There was not long to go now.
Lockbourne, Alexiandra
Back in Lockbourne, a growing sense of unease pervaded the General Staff. Vichnaya had, once again, assured Lyceni of its peaceful intentions. But there was a clear dissonance between its words and its actions. The enemy’s preparations had been meticulous, but satellites had still spotted units on the move, and SIGINT concurred that a massive movement of vehicles and personnel was underway. What was more, the Magicans had been under sustained cyber-attack for days and experts agreed that the breadth and depth of assets deployed suggested that a state actor was responsible.
Deep in the bowels of the Information Defence Bureau, Alexiandra’s premiere cyber warfare organisation, analysts and coders were scrambling to improvise a defence against the storm that was sure to come. They took a leaf out of the Magican playbook, concealing ‘bombs’ within innocuous bits of code, testing backup servers, constructing whole decoy versions of important government websites. The name of the game was deterrence: if the Vichnayans did attack Alexiandran assets online, they would feel the sting.
A more conventional response was also in the offing, with the so-called ‘second echelon’ of Alexiandran forces in the midst of mobilisation. So far, only the Marines had seen action in Magica; now, the Army was steeling itself for battle. Long military trains snaked across the Republic’s backcountry, carrying tanks, trucks, ammunition and weaponry to assembly points around the nation. It was not yet known where the Vichnayans intended to strike, but any threat of involvement from such a large and technologically advanced state was to be taken in deadly earnest. Most likely, the Federal Republic was preparing some sort of invasion of the Magican archipelago, and its proximity to the theatre gave it a decided logistical advantage. The Alexiandrans were determined to close the gap, with huge troop transport planes taking off from airfields in the coast every few minutes. Within a couple of days, thousands more Alexiandran troops - and, crucially, a great deal more armour - would be on Magican soil. Naval assets not already committed in the east were bound there, streaming across the South Sea in vast, vigilant convoys.
The following military communique was sent to Riomler, the only belligerent which shared a landmass with Vichnaya, through secure channels.

Dear Friends,
We have become aware that Vichnaya, your northeast neighbour, is preparing to enter the Magican conflict. Since it has refused to clarify its intentions to our satisfaction, we can only assume that it is hostile, and that Federal forces are making ready to deploy against us. With this in mind, we urge you to undertake proactive defensive measures. Yours is the only Allied country which shares a landmass with Vichnaya, leaving you uniquely positioned to disrupt the enemy’s attack. A simultaneous air and land attack could blunt the Vichnayan onslaught before it can gather momentum.
As always, please continue to act in coordination with Allied forces, and to keep us appraised of any new developments. We urge you not to undertake any rash moves until Vichnaya’s involvement in the war is confirmed.
