The ground shivered under their rolling threads as the distant whine of their engines drifted through the grasslands. It sounded like there was a gathering thunderstorm even if the skies were clear and blue. Their tracks tore up the grass and laid shallow trenches in the soil. Ahead bulldozer units cleared corpses of trees for the rest of the column to follow.

Commander Ikari opened up the hatch of his Type 90 tank to gaze around. The 7th SSDF armored division was all around him. They were advancing in a wide line with the spearhead of the armor ahead with the APCs and other mechanized elements following close behind him.

They had their orders as they began to approach from the north towards the village of Yelizovo in the far distance. Their orders were clear. Repulse the occupiers from the town, cut the road, and defend it from possible counterattacks. They could have approached silently across the smaller roads to reduce their profile and noise but that wasn't the point. They wanted to create as much noise as possible.

Ikari wanted to avoid a bloodbath on both sides if possible. He reached inside his turret as his Loader handed him the radio piece.

He had been ordered to lie about the charter of course. The SSDF didn't really have the time nor really cared to consult with the Kamchatskians about this. In fact, orders were if the Chong Qing forces refused to withdraw they were to flatten the entire town with artillery rather than risk damage to their tanks. If there were bystander casualties? They were to be attributed to Chong Qing.

Ikari wasn't exactly a fan of these orders. They were here to protect the people dammit yet High Command seemed only concerned about securing the safety of the Home Island's North. They couldn't allow the Russians to come one step closer to Santoak itself and damn the number of Kamchatskian lives needed to secure that.

Furthermore, it seemed that the Joint Councill was enraged by the direct refusal of Chong Qing. Ikari was beginning to suspect this was more punitive than protection. Punish Chong Qing for their refusal of the Santoak Authority.

In recent years ever since the last M.A.G.E attack, the military arm of the government had started to lose more and more influence as the Evangelion Project drifted to more under civilian control. There were fears within the SSDF that instead of enjoying their past parallel power structure to the civilian government, they might now be forced to be under their command. The position of Lord Protector might one day be subject to the cabinet of the Prime Minister. Some saw that as... unacceptable.

Ikari knew this was all a power play. The High Command of SSDF wanted to prove how essential they were and to maintain their power by escalating this conflict faster than it had to.

Part of him actually wanted this plan to actually work because he knew that if push come to shove, the SSDF would not budge. They would go down fighting...

He sighed.

"We're finally here." YNN reporter Ham Seok-jun stood feeling the cold air of Kamchatka. The airport was strangely peaceful, and everything was quiet. Ham Seok-jun did not like this silence. This is because in this silence, for some reason, I felt an eerie feeling far from peace.

Within the Capital, Captain Masayuki sat limply on the bumper of his APC. He watched the dawn come over the horizon. Despite its light, he felt none of its warmth. All he could feel was the cold pit in his stomach.

All around the city armored car and APCs were now patrolling the streets. Right now a curfew was being ordered for all Kamchatskian citizens on the megaphones. As usual, the local authorities were not being consulted. If they identified anyone from the protest a squad of Spec-Ops with their Santoak markings blacked out would grab them and detain them for the foreseeable future.

He buried his face in his hands. What a mess this was. They were here to help...

Yet they were doing all of this. General Kazumi had met with him barely an hour ago. The General had told Mayasuki it wasn't his fault. An investigation had been done and it turned out that Russian infiltrators were in that crowd. They were armed with bombs and guns, ready to commit a massacre and blame it on the SSDF. A few civilians were killed, sure, but that's just the way war was. Sometimes accidents happened and Mayasuki and his men shouldn't face punishment for doing their duty. The General told him no charges would be made and that Mayasuki would be a hero for stopping the Russian plans.

So long as he didn't speak of this. The integrity of the SSDF was paramount in these dangerous times. The people needed to know that the SSDF could be trusted to protect them.

Though Kazumi never said anything, Mayasuki knew there was a silent threat behind those words.

Mayasuki joined to defend the people.

He stared out at the street. The bodies had been removed but the blood still lay slick on the streets. SSDF bullet casings were being picked up while troops from the General's own personal unit - the Hounds - were dropping AK-47 casings and explosive residue.

This didn't really feel like defending anyone.

Despite the efforts of Santoak forces now patrolling the streets, the reporters from Seorabeol would find in the alleyways and in the slums of the city that the SSDF had yet to sweep, there would be surviving protestors and whispers of an "Incident resulting in dozens of death" caused by the SSDF.
