President Michael Morgan was sitting in his office of the presidental palace, signing a new bill that passed in the assembly, which reminded him when he was a simple deputy and not head of state, oh how he missed those days; now he is dealing crisis after crisis, wherever this was social, economic or political, and currently it was all three. Ardonia's economy was becoming increasingly stagnant and was in a gridlock within the assembly over wherever or not the state should intervene. Social issues were also becoming a major thorn in the government's side, women were demanding more rights with paid maternity leave and free access to abortion, and although Morgan and the rest of his social democratic party supported this, the various right-wing parties in the assembly vetoed any support bill and were pressuring the supreme court to pass legalisation to make abortion officially illegal. The politics of Ardonia had also radically changed as the communist party had secured the largest number of seats among the left coalition and left many on the right in believing a full-scale revolution was going to occur, Michael knew this was nonsense of course but he still had doubts about the communists' true intentions; there had also been multiple worker strikes across the country of which many accused the Communist party of having a hand in.
Another issue was the military, it had its budget cut by half in recent years which angered a lot of its personal and staff, however Michael never feared a coup despite their threats, the military had always been loyal, and he saw no reason for that to change now.
He finished signing the bill when he heard some commotion and then what sounded like gunfire outside, he stood out of his chair and turned towards the balcony window, he then saw a tank smash through the palace gates, the gunner on top of it must have saw him because he turned the 50.cal up and opened fire.
Michael dove for cover as the glass shattered and the inside of his office was ripped apart, then a presidental bodyguard burst into the room and shouted.
"Mr president are you alright!?" before rushing over.
"Yes I'm fine" Michael responded.
"What the hell is going on!?" He demaded.
"The Army sir", the guard replied, "they've gone rogue."
"Rogue?"
"We have to get you out of here, we've got your family waiting in a car outside, we just nee-"
He was cut off as a wall of bullets hit his body, blood exploded everywhere, covering Michael's face in a red smear, a few moments later about a dozen or so soldiers walked into the room, they scanned it before spotting him hiding away in a corner, he shouted and screamed as they dragged him before one hit him on the side of the head with the butt of his rifle, knocking him out. He was then dragged outside and placed into a military vehicle and drove away.
Soldiers began filling into the capital city's streets like a swarm, setting up checkpoints around key areas, moving tanks around the assembly building and postioning them to provide support to the troops storming it. Some citizens, police officers and secrutiy personal catched what was going on and a few small scale firefights broke out, however these were qucickly ended and overall, only a 130 people died in the capital city.
By 10:30am the army had seized control of the presidental palace, the national assembly and now the supreme court, near all deputies were either arrested or weren't in the assembly building at the time and now the military had full control of the capital. It was now time the plotters of the coup, high ranking generals and colonels, to announce it on national Televison for the rest of the country and world.
Greetings and good morning citizens of Ardonia and the world. For over several years now our once mighty and great nation has been ruled by a clique of corrupt bureuacrats, who has bought to the verge of chaos and collapse, well no more! It is the duty of the military to protect the republic from all enemies, foreign and domestic; President Michael Morgan and along with members of the national assembly and supreme court have been arrested, others have also faced house arrest, and they face will justice for their crimes soon enough. For now, all political activity will be suspended, all political parties deemed to be a threat to the security of the nation will be banned, this includes but is not limited to the Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Socialist party, the Left party and the Labour party; a national emergency has been declared and all military personnel active and reserve will be deployed. A military committee of the nation's top officers will govern for 5 years until peace has finally been secured, then a general election will be held.
We know this may sound alarming, but we assure this is for the good of the nation, please, go about your daily lives as you regularly would, and do not try to resist or protest, you will be seen as a terrorist and a traitor and dealt with effectively. To the rest of the world, we hope you can understand and recognise our new government as the legitimate one of Ardonia, as this action is to save the very foundation of our nation.
The military had now successfully couped the government and established a junta, there are expected to be protests and riots but how will the rest of the world react?
