OPINION: League of Dependent States: How the LIS Merger with GENA Demonstrates Alliances’ Corruption of Values

Earlier today, the fledgling alliance Global Entente of Nations & Alliances (GENA) announced that the League of Independent States (LIS) has merged with it. This merger came as a surprise to international relations experts as LIS was founded on the principles of being independent from the influence of other nations. This surprise was, however, less of a surprise than the authoritarian founding nation of LIS, Phenyzia, joining Global Confederation of Nations (GCN), the name of GENA at the time.

GCN started out as alliance that strove to bring together alliances, establish economic ties, and help in military affairs. It was additionally dedicated to promoting world peace and security, nation building, and upholding human rights. And, most importantly for this author’s purposes, “ensuring democratic transitions of power”^[1]. GCN, in its own words, was founded, in part, to promote democracy. And yet, it let into the alliance a non-democratic nation who founded a nondemocratic alliance^[2]. One does need to consider that GCN’s desire to create a “World Assembly” of nations was a major factor in letting in this state, despite it being antithetical to much of what GCN stood for. For perhaps the leaders of GCN felt that by exposing Phenyzia to democratic ideals, it would eventually turn democratic. This is a logical fallacy used by many nations, including the home nation of this author, the NRI. In most cases, the authoritarian state just takes advantage of the situation and throws off international scrutiny to other authoritarian states that are not in the “in” group.

GCN/GENA has had an obsession with absorbing as many alliances as it can into itself. It is not exactly clear what had caused GCN/GENA to go on this path of mergers, but the attempt to merge in two different human rights organizations had directly let to the infighting in one, and the storming out of GENA members in the other. Some even see these merge attempts as forced, which is odd for an alliance that is based on democratic ideals.

The League of Independent States was founded in May as a direct response to democratic alliances like the International Freedom Coalition (IFC) and GCN/GENA. What had led LIS to fall from its ideals and join GENA? This is, quite frankly, a mystery. In this author’s research, there appeared to be a slow trend toward LIS joining GCN/GENA, but with no obvious clues as to why. LIS attempted to merge with GCN last month, but that merger was called off due to internal dissent from the Pro-Democracy camp, including several alliances threatening to pull out of GCN. And yet, LIS has joined GENA without any angst from this group.

It is the belief of this author that the leadership of GENA, in an effort to hold a monopoly on international discourse, is guilty of performing back-room corruption to smooth over the anger of existing GENA members, and to better entice the nations of LIS into GENA. Should this corruption be true, how many alliances has GENA brought into itself through this method. Is GENA’s entire premise illegitimate? That is not for this author to speculate, but it does deserve more investigation.

Ultimately, GCN/GENA is most likely here to stay. Whether that is a good or bad thing has yet to be seen. We have seen its unprecedented growth in recent months and its international activities has grown accordingly. It wants to bring as many members as it an in, with one of those being LIS. Because of this, LIS is now a member of GENA. So, in the end, the League of Independent States is now the League of Dependent States, dependent on GENA.

High levels of radiation? nothing to worry about
There have been reports of unusually high levels of radiation being detected in and around Oceania which could cause concerns with the international community however the OSDRT announces that there is nothing to worry about there are no experiments being conducted with radioactive products nor is there nuclear weapon testing the cause of high radiation is due to the DMR plants and the highly radioactive DMR-51 being used the OSDRT states they are developing scrubbers to help lower the radiation and because of how "unique" this material is it would take quite some time to produce said scrubbers. The OSDRT announced to anyone who is concerned that everything is under control and no one should be worried on whats happening in Oceania.

New use for older military vehicles, and new cartridge for military

The old stocks of BMP Infantry Fighting Vehicles ranging from completed hulls, turrets, and vehicles put into storage would be brought again however the hulls and completed BMPs will be put through a modernization program. The completed BMPs would have more advanced and modern electronics and equipment AND the 73mm gun on the BMP-1 will be replaced with a more powerful smoothbore recoilless gun using either the 105mm M40 or 82mm B-10.

BMP hulls that were completed but didn’t have the turret installed would be modified and turned into a light tank armed with a 100mm smoothbore gun allowing it to fire both APFSDS and ATGMs these will be designated as BMP-LT

Completed turrets will be used to arm OSDRT armored trolleys and the OAF armored trains any incompleted ones will be armed and used for these purposes.

The Armed Forces have announced that they will replace their older battle rifle cartridges with 6x49 cartridges in their machine guns, sniper rifles, and certain battle rifles. Tests were conducted and have shown that the cartridge has much superior velocity and penetration.

IHC occupies Zarnicovia Nova; Republic of Zarnicovia established

Armenian troops, accompanied by foreign nationals, pay their respects to the fallen in Boa

Following a series of Victory Day parades in Boa; members of the Provisional Brazzillian Council (promptly renamed the "Provisional Zarnicovian Council") gathered outside the senate building to proclaim the Republic of Zarnicovia as the legitimate government of the isles. The Republic of Zarnicovia, henceforth shortened to just "Zarnicovia", is recognized by the International Humanitarian Coalition and to an extent; a few non-aligned nations as the official government of the isles; though this claim is refuted by the irredentist Novian Democratic Republic and the Zarnicovian Socialist and Unionist Party (both of whom have been designated terrorist organizations by the Kingdom of Armenia, the only nation in the IHC to do so as of now).

International Humanitarian Council, as of today, has asked fellow alliances (such as GENA and the KTO) to recognize their established government as legitimate; and awaits their response.

Panic swept the Republic of Zarnicovia as terrorists aligned to a prominent cult unleashed a flurry of various devastating attacks this week; especially outside of the economically-important city of Cal which, like Boa; is currently under a lengthy reconstruction effort (of which was started by Hayrig Garabedian).

Said "cultists" have been a thorn in the IHC's side ever since the alliance promised to intervene in Slavacia on behalf of their government not too long ago; and are believed to be aligned with the terrorist organization, the "Novian Democratic Republic". Though the IHC has been able to repel many a cultist away from urban areas; their presence in the countryside seems to have "increased in the last week"; experts say.

One particularly cruel attack was perpetrated against members of an IHC peacekeeping squad dispatched to deal with riots in many a village. Discovered this afternoon, their convoy was left abandoned in a field not too far from a major road; their crews nowhere in sight. They, alongside an IHC interpreter, are considered to be dead; as the cult is known for its senseless brutality; especially towards prisoners of war.

As a direct result of these attacks, martial law has been enacted after a vote was approved by the Senate of the Republic of Zarnicovia; with a majority of peacekeeping forces concentrated around the Cal Region.

Authoritarian Government Overthrown in Coup de’tat

As the government began to pack up to leave at 4:46 P.M on an otherwise peaceful Saturday the presidential building was stormed and captured by former veterans and democratic supporters known as the Blue Bolt.

As the conservative government packed up for the day Kenton Theodosius was doing some last minute files and listening to the latest debates about which laws a few bad and which ones are good. Little did he except that within just under a minute his office would be surrounded by former spec ops team Blue Bolt a democratic insurgent group that had been a thorn in the governments side for a while, spreading democratic propaganda, staging protests for democracy, and sometimes assassinating fascist politicians. They hated the current system and wanted to see a new era of freedom and democracy in the Galapagos and now with military support it looked like that was possible.

By 6:30 P.M almost the entire upper house of the fascist politicians was either dead or tied on the ground was guarded by a battalion of soldiers and 5 tanks. The police were ordered to stand down as the rebels began to present themselves to the population of the Galapagos. In speeches on Twitter and other streaming platforms the leaders of the Blue Bolt stated their intentions for free and open elections, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom to hold any political opinions. This was a surprise to those who had lived under mostly authoritarian regimes their entire lives. Crimea uses thermobaric weapons in Mayfield; thousands dead

Once again, tragedy has struck the Republic of Zarnicovia.

Following a series of terrorist attacks involving the use of chemical weapons in Mayfield's residential district; and in the midst of a thorough investigation by the IHC, Crimea; a nation aligned with the terrorist group, the Novian Democratic Republic, indiscriminately fired not one, but several, thermobaric warheads into the city; targeting primarily the residential and economic districts. The ensuing battle; of which involved Armenia retaliating against the Gothians with the use of white phosphorus, is said to have claimed thousands of additional lives; leaving the total death toll somewhere in the hundreds of thousands.

Thankfully, the Gothians were forced to retreat following the arrival of reinforcements from Boa, who helped reclaim aerial superiority through the use of Mayfield's anti-air systems; hopefully discouraging any sort of further attacks from happening. As of now, Mayfield has been mostly abandoned; its inhabitants transported to safer lands. Those who refused to leave, dubbed "chgnavorner" (literally "hermits") by the Armenian government, are ordered to follow a plethora of mandates, including a curfew before sunfall; and an IHC-sponsored screening for exposure to harmful chemicals.

A funeral service is to be held in the ruined square; attended by IHC officials, including High Commissioner Hayrig Garabedian.

IHC launches investigation after Visegradian ships seen in Zarnicovian waters

Tensions have risen after Visegradian ships were located off the coast of the island of Saint John's; a territory relatively close to the Republic of Zarnicovia. Though the island is de jure claimed by the Republic of Zarnicovia, is has been a de facto territory of the prominent terrorist group, the Novian Democratic Republic, ever since the collapse of Zarnicovia Nova. Disappearances of peacekeepers and interpreters have been commonplace; leading to the Senate of the Republic of Zarnicovia declaring the island a "no access zone" in hopes of starving out whatever militants reside there. Until now, a few rafts and fishing boats were seized for aiding the terrorists; and their occupants usually detained.

So, imagine the surprise when residents of a local village not too far from the island spotted Visegradian warships patrolling nearby waters. Visegrad; a member of the European Defense League, had been proclaiming its support for the Novian Democratic Republic for quite some time now despite the alliance's leader; Russia, directly opposing said organization. Coast guard members are ordered to not intervene; "lest it stoke an international incident", and rather report on any illegal activity.

Hayrig Garabedian, IHC High Commissioner of the Republic of Zarnicovia; has requested that the Russian government intervene on their behalf, and has issued an investigation into these sightings.

Foreign Companies Under New Data Laws

Foreign companies are now under heavy scrutiny by the Makko Okoan Government with the recent passing of the Digital Security & Privacy Law. Foreign companies are now mandated to delete all data upon request by a Makko Okoan citizen unless a valid reason can be provided for denying such a request and in addition to that, mandates that foreign companies not store data on government officials without prior written authorization. Legal experts from Amnesty International claim that this law is a tiny expansion of civil rights

but also in some ways, decreases civil rights.

In addition to foreign companies being affected, foreign governments are as well, with mandated surveillance and monitoring of all diplomatic and embassy computers within the nation. Luckily, according to International Affairs Expert Franziska Schwarz from Ferwerter here in Makko Oko from an international college student exchange program, governments are lucky the monitoring only has to be minimal, enough so to detect illegal activities such as visiting blacklisted websites, and is not nearly as deep of monitoring as regular citizens and other non-government personnel tend to have.

Foreign Air Security Services Finally Authorized

When the FlySECURE Act was originally enacted, all foreign law enforcement were under said law, not authorized to police flights that had anything to do with Makko Oko. This led to questions from international affairs scholars at the University Of Opposh and abroad, with some governments also showing concern over the legislation. After months of silence from the government on the matter of the FlySECURE Act's blatant mistakes of not adding provisions for foreign law enforcement, the Ministry Of Internal Security in a joint bulletin with the DIFSS published today has stated that the FlySECURE Act has been revised with no official reason given for the revision, nor for the bulletin, but it goes on to state that airports and government officials had merely 1 day to transition over to the newly written articles that the revision introduced.

Surprisingly, no articles were removed, but changes were made to existing articles, and a section dedicated to procedures on foreign law enforcement was established. While we may never know why it took so long for the revision to be completed, it does show signs that the Makko Okoan government wishes to work with the international community.

Olpen Officially Pulls Out of GENA

Chamber Minister Augustine Skinner officially signed the Declaration on Foreign Relation which pulls Olpen out of the Global Confederation of Nations and the Global Entente of Nations and Alliances. This is following a promise to stop bloody interventions in foreign wars and focus on economic, cultural, and social growth in the Olpenese state.

The process of leaving the Global Confederation of Nations began officially after the originally proposed merger with the League of Independent States. Not only was Augustine Skinner also pursuing an isolationist policy, but T. ZBalls, Olpenese ambassador to both the UF and to the GCN, resigned, in his words "disgusted at what the United Federation has become." Following this, Olpen removed the Pact of RIbbons and Steel and Collective Pact from the alliance, as well as issuing a condemnation of the GENA. 2 days later, all Olpenese staff in the GENA Headquarters in Marajarbia were instructed to go to Marajarbian International to be flown out of the nation. At this point, the documents withdrawing were all finished and the Senate simply needed to vote on the resolution to leave. That day, the Senate voted near-unanimously to leave. The bill was signed the following Monday, as the next was a Sunday.

Many are worried about the departure, known as Olxit, and the effect it will have on the economy. The government believes that neutrality in politics could help the nation in its trade endeavors, with many saying new deals could be made with KTO states.They also believe they could join the Outer Economic Zone.

Galapagos Coup

Blue Bolt operative jumping from roof to Galapgosian Senate

A recent Coup'de'ta in the neighboring state of Galapagos has left the nation concerned about the future of its former colony, and the future of the world as a whole. A democratic insurgency known once as the special operations division Blue Bolt stormed the capitol and took control of the capital, executing or capturing the entirety of the fascist Senate late in the day. They announced intentions to turn the Galapagos into a free democracy, instating free speech and assembly soon after they had taken President Theodosius hostage and killed him. Olpen recognizes the new Galapgos as soon as the SSD confirmed reports of the overthrow.

The interviewee, Captain of the Blue Bolts, stated that the new government could open an embassy with Olpen, however, they said they will wait for public opinion. They still stated they will have hostile relations with Marajarbia, but also said they will try a more diplomatic approach with the rest of the GENA nations. They expressed continual interest in the KTO, and have commended Janpian democracy.

They stated they planned to hold elections, although did not give a timetable for it. They said it "shouldn't be hard," citing a level of democracy in the old regime, which was met by skepticism from the reporter.

Breaking: Teshan and Upryene Naval Forces Clash Over Fishing Area

Greppe, Uprye – After years of rising tensions, Teshan and Upryene naval vessels attacked eah other after moving to enforce each nation’s claims on the Abria Shoal. The Abria Shoal is a major fishing spot for Uprye but is just outside its internationally recognized EEZ. Since 2019, Teshan fishing vessels began to arrive at the Shoal to fish due to overfishing closer to Tesheau itself. Tensions between the two nations have been rising for years because of this.

Back in 2020, Upryene and the NRI signed an agreement that included the establishment of a military base for Roman naval vessels as a direct result of these rising tensions. This only enflamed tensions as Tesheau condemned the alliance. The base is still under construction.

It is not known if this will escalate to all-out war, but many experts believe it will. Both nations are too far into their tensions to go to the diplomatic table. The expectation is that a limited naval exchange will happen between the two nations. Both nations do not have large navies as they are both small nations, so the conflict will be small. This could change if the NRI gets involved as the balance of power would shift dramatically onto the Upryene side.

Uprye is an island nation of 371,580 Upryenes. It is a liberal democracy that was established in 1986 after gaining independence from a colonial power. Its relationship with the NRI began in 2002 with a trade deal and establishment of embassies in both nations.

Tesheau is an island nation of 11,181,595 Teshans. This nation is officially a democracy but restricts voting to a specific elite. This nation is repressive and is dealing with a growing population in limited space. This is what led to the overfishing in its local seas.

After news had reached Parliament and later the office of the leader of the successful coup in Galapagos, Laura Ortiz and Alexander Schloss both looked at each other, a bit confused. Yet, Laura Ortiz decides to push forwards with recognition of the newly formed democracy, even offering a statue for the occasion of a flag flying over a pair of cuffs, broken open, with the chain between the cuffs also broken as well. Yet, even as the statue was shipped over, Peacekeepers were also sent over to "have a look around" perhaps to guard the statue itself.

Party recognizes new Galapagos Government

After a recent coup launched by the Blue Bolt against the authoritatian Galapagos Government, the Union of Party Member's Committee (UPMC), along with the Party Central, held a vote on recognizing the said state. Many union representatives were visibly surprised with the news, while some are seen in deep thinking. The People's Marshal remarked "A surprising, yet a welcoming development". As such by 10:00PM EJT, the UPMC held an emergency vote, gaining majority votes for the declaration. And with that, the declaration is immediately passed to the Party Central, who then voted it official. As such, the Janpian Union of Government Worker's Party, recognizes the Blue Bolt as the legitimate government of Galapagos, and declaring the Party's will to continue relations under the new administration. They also applauded their attempts to launch a free and fair elections, along with opening the state for free speech. The Party hopes that relations between the two states continue, along with continuing cooperation as KTO allies.

IFC Passes Resolution Requiring Members to Leave Alliances with Non-Democratic Members

Kairaku, Kirishima – The International Freedom Coalition Council passed Resolution 25a today. This resolution, called the Freedom, Continuity, and Legacy Act, was created to ensure that members if the IFC do not join alliances that poses a conflict of interest with the International Freedom Coalition. Members are now banned from becoming full members of alliances that have members that do not have freedoms and human rights record up to the standard of the IFC. This eliminates joint membership in many of the major alliances in the world.

The NRI’s Republic Senate, in response to this act, introduced an act to downgrade its membership in the Advocates for Abolition and Against Slavers to observer status. This is due to membership at least one nation whose human rights records is not up to the standard of the IFC due to war crimes committed in the name of fighting slavery. Though saddened by this shift, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that the NRI will continue its anti-piracy, anti-slavery, and anti-human trafficking policies.
