The emphasis was on "initially". You may have a larger fighting force in the beginning, but that can change in a...snap, if you would.

Historically, yes. Culturally? No...it isn't. The United Kingdom seems more-or-less closer to Germany (which makes sense, considering that the English ARE a Germanic people).
