This Character/War RP is for members belonging to the Greater Dienstad region. As always, you are welcome to read along.

I. Prelude To War

20 Upton Street, Weston, Phibeta. December 1860

The great age of industrialization. There stands an island empire that rules the waves of Greater Dienstad through the steam-powered iron frigates that it has built, through the small gunboats that protect its shores. To the regiments of light infantry that patrol the vast empire. And technological advancement has proven early on that flight is possible with the advent of observation balloons and airships. For Phibeta, she was the embodiment of power and glory. The perfect example of the greatest democracies in the world. Though it is true that Phibeta has a monarch (three sibling monarchs to be exact), there stands a parliament that votes democratically on the laws governing the empire. A highly refined and civilized society that no longer upholds any single element of barbarity.

Child labor has been officially made illegal. Slavery has long since been illegal, and there has been special care and consideration to protect these interests. Naval forces patrol the seas of its vast empire to crack down on slavery. The Midland Yards have been keeping a close track on factories, mines, and mills to uphold child labor laws. More social reform came about when the government passed an act to allow women the right to vote in 1844. The military made the motion to not only allow women to serve in the military but also to allow them to serve as officers the following year. It is the great age of democratic freedom, where the crown reigns overall, the crown being the Phibetan Empire.

From The far-off Cartune Isles to the rock that is Ribberton, Phibeta rules the waves. Phibeta has taken its seat on the world stage and has been keen on stepping its foot in foreign affairs, especially out East, close by to their colonies in the Cartune Isles.

The quaint townhouse of white shines as a light of democracy contrasting with the dirty clouds of soot of the industrial factories in the capital Weston. This townhouse belongs to the Prime Minister and First Lord of The Treasury, Mr. Louis Partarige. A member of the Conservative Party (otherwise known as the Bowlers) for the county of Kartridge, sips on tea grown from the colonies. He was a staunch supporter of Phibeta’s military conquest and imperial rule over several unclaimed lands that scatter throughout the Greater Dienstadi region. He is also in support of social reform and abolition policies, which Phibeta had led the way on for many years. He has big ambitions for the expansion of this land of hope and glory, from its territorial right around the region to the promotion of the ideals of God’s beckoning city on a hill. He wants nothing more than to make sure that the sun would never set on the Phibetan Empire.

Today, he sits in the drawing-room with his wife Elenor Partridge, having tea that has been grown in the Cartune Isles. He holds in his hands a copy of the Weston Mail, the local newspaper that since 1832, delivered regional and sometimes national news. Since 1855, it has been delivering news from around the world in part thanks to wired telegraph and cables that have been flung from across the empire.

“Elenor, look at this,” he says to his wife showing the newspaper. Their eyes are attentive to the international headlines.

Abetton Declares War On Katase. Neighboring Nations At War. Abetton Shown As Agressor.

“My goodness,” Elenor exclaims. “It would seem that war is on the horizon again. I would have never guessed that Abetton would go after a poor little nation like Katase”.

“Oh, but dear Elenor. I saw this a mile away, and many Bowlers did too. Abetton has been building up its military and that is not including the colonization races with them. They are an aggressive bunch, and their Queen is very irritable and uptight, nothing like our majestic sibling monarchs”. Louis steps up from his seat, and from his window, he sees the vast peninsula on which Phibeta sits.

“Abetton has blatantly attacked its neighbors, clearly in the name of territorial expansion, and racial superiority. We are protectors of the weak, and we as civilized people of a civilized society must not stand for this act of barbary. We as a nation must decide if we are to continue our right to empire, we must make for absolute certain that we are doing this for the goodness and protection of this grateful world”.

“It seems that parliament will be up in arms. But I’m sure you’ll convince them about this little war”.

“I know I can rally parliament, but their majesties will need to get on board as well”.

The 12th Dragoons. The Oysterfield Barracks, Oysterfield, Phibeta.

The horses that belonged to the cavalry of the 12th Dragoons march on parade. The 12th Dragoons, or the “Queen Diane’s Own” is a recently crafted cavalry regiment that has been created for female officers and soldiers to serve their majesties in both ceremonial and combat. So far, they have been assigned as the escort for Queen Diane I for any engagement she has outside of the capitol, and what other engagements are they needed for. Ever since the end of the civil wars and that regional bloodbath that was the Istoloa Wars, Phibeta has been in a perpetual state of peace. The reigns of the Three Sibling Monarchs have begun since then and continued on henceforth. No age has been as peaceful as this. Of course, Phibeta is always ready to carry out its duty, to protect interests overseas.

In their fur cloaks of navy blue over their military uniforms, their horses clad in fine garments, they gallop to their regimental marches. The commanding officer, Major General Lady Jamie McNiel, 3rd Countess of Oysrterfield, looks over her troops on her white steed. The horse riders gallop with their sabers shining their iron off the winter sun. Along with Lady McNiel, another figure marches in with her purple horse. Captain Milena Thompson is a member of one of the newest aristocratic families. Her family opened a textile mill in the town she came from and made their wealth quickly to gain their place in society. Her mother thought it would be a grand idea for both her daughters to serve in the military to gain more prestige for their family name. Her sister Mary is in the army serving as a lieutenant colonel in the 45th Midland Regiment. She is unlike most of the officers in the army, who paid their way into officer commissions where Milena went through the Royal Military Academy of Orkstead.

“Captain Thompson!” Shouts Lady McNeil to her, beside her were her loyal subordinates, Corporal Maude Albury and Sergeant Verna Monaghan, both on horses of red and yellow respectively. Captain Thompson rides her horse next to her commanding officer and the other subordinates.

“Don’t you love the smell of soldiers and horses in the early afternoon?” Jamie says, stretching her arms and legs.

“Oh, it is a good afternoon your Ladyship” Milena replies shyly.

“You know, this era of peace is rather nice. Wouldn’t you agree Captain”.

“Yeah. My mother told me that she hasn’t seen such a peaceful time since the Istoloa wars, neither the civil coup of a couple of years ago”.

“Oh, but that is the thing Captain,” Jamie says in a rather ominous voice, something that once could say is very dissatisfied with the current status of the world.

“I will never know the glories of war if I do not go out and charge in against the enemy. Oh, how I would love to do that. Have my sabre pointing at the enemy, ready to kill”.

“That seems a bit too much. War can’t be that glorious if it means death. Of one’s self or friends in arms”.

“Don’t be such a coward captain” Jamie replies. “I will not tolerate cowardice in this regiment”.

“Your ladyship, you might actually get what you are wishing for” Corporal Maude adds on, interrupting the conversation. She carries with her a satchel, of which she brings out a newspaper, the Weston Mail of course.

“War!?” Jamie exclaims with glee, Milena looking a bit worried.

“Not yet ma’am. It would seem that Abetton has declared war on Katase” replied Corporal Maude, “in an act and air of superiority over their neighbor, they launched an invasion on their borders. Think that they could march through the east in full annexation of an independent nation”.

“But, what does that have to do with Phibeta?” Milena replies.

“Well besides trade, it really doesn’t. But I’m sure that parliament will come up with an excuse for us to enter into a conflict” Sergeant Verna replies. “To my understanding, it would seem that the reason for us to be involved is to protect Katase and maintain the balance of powers within the region”.

“Well, that’s alright then!” Jamie replies happily, “I would like to charge in and show those arrogant Abettons a thing or two about might”. The dragoons march past the officers, who give their salutes to. Jamie felt pleased with her fine and glorious regiment.

“Ah, these are fine soldiers. Cogs in this grand scheme of military might. The pride of Phitannia itself. They are to be kept in tip-top shape and in working order”. She continues her little spiel to Captain Thompson. “If they are not fit, they can’t fight. If they can’t fight, then I’ll flog their backs good. Nothing gets in the way of the gallantry that is the 12th Dragoons Captain Thompson”, she finishes with a smirk on her face. Milena could only sit there and smile awkwardly.

The Office of The Admiralty, Porterfield building. Weston, Phibeta.

“Abetton at war with Katase?” First Lord of The Admiralty, Sir Reginald Gutterman, 10th Earl of Rutland, says to one of his captains in his office. The admiralty has always made sure that the seas of trade within their empire and outside around the region are kept clear so that trade with all nations can be achieved without the threat of lost ships, lost lives, and lost revenue. In the past, naval vessels were maintained to send colonists, soldiers, and missionaries (spreading the word of the Cardinal Heroes) around the world, as well as destroy smaller vessels and plunder others. Nowadays ever since the Istoloa Wars early on in the 19th Century, they maintain open seas of the empire.

“It would seem so,” replies Captain Edmund Richardson, captain of the iron-hulled steam frigate, HMS Hillington. “If my crews’ eyes don’t deceive them, they have seen Abetton warships sailing around their little peninsula, and a passing warship heard cannon fire from the ships that were attacking Katase ports”.

“How very… interesting” Sir Gutterman replies. On his desk, he takes a quick glance of the empire and his fleet. There was one warship he feels he can send to assess the situation. That ship is docked at Port Gallagher in their colony of the Cartune Isles, and so he picks up that little token that represented that ship. The HMS Creeton, one of the first kinds of steam-powered iron armored frigates commissioned in the wake of new warships in the region with iron hulls.

“Perhaps, a little gunboat diplomacy should be in order”.

“Sir?”

“Don’t worry. We have no concessions in Abetton or Katase, we are just sending a warship to observe the war and to protect trade in the area”. Reginald puts down the token on the bay of which lays the sea and small land corridor between Abetton and Katase. “I’ll send a telegram to Captain Octavia Winthrop to dispatch her ship to the bay between Abetton and Katase. If any of those two nations wish to mess with trade with us, then they will be met with early retaliation”.

“As you wish sir”.

“Oh, and bring a couple of Royal Marines with you as well. These well-trained soldiers will sure create a wonderful distraction to anyone who wishes to attack us”.

“Of course sir”. Captain Edmund leaves the office, with Sir Gutterman beaming with confidence, secure in the knowledge that his fleet will never falter to any circumstance, for it was the age where Phitannia rules the seas!

The world of Greater Dienstad is once again at witness of another major conflict. The storms of war are overhead. Whether the nation-states of the region wish to be involved is up to them, but as far as anyone is concerned, Phibeta, Katase, and Abetton will be at its center.

February 1860 - Sauville

Ongoing negotiations with neighboring Katase had not really been going well, perhaps by design, plenty in Abetton were heading the rallying cry of Abetton becoming the true dominate power on the Meridional continent and to do that that meant carving away the little Principality peninsula off to the far east, beyond the last intimidating natural border, the Sirin Mountains. Tall, difficult to navigate on foot, in the days of old, it was the perfect natural barrier between the little Kingdom of Abetton and the little Principality of Katase, but no more. Ships were bigger and better than ever so sailing around the coast was simple, nitroglycerin though difficult and dangerous to handle was incredibly useful in blowing away anything. Certainly innovations in science one day might make a more stable explosive but all in good time. Steam was slowly gaining traction as a means of propulsion, and industry was expanding. Now in 1859, Katase was worried about Abetton's ambitious expansions. Even now, Abetton homesteaders were increasingly encroaching into the Sirin Mountains and into the Katase villages that lined her, citizens were being taken for money to become new servants and slaves to Abetton masters, some were treated well others not.

Abetton was still toying with things but certainly the ambitious Queen Beatrix I was eager to prove herself as a strong Queen to be reckoned with, if that meant taking Katase than so be it, but was it worth the cost and effort? Tonight on a dark stormy evening in Abetton, that was what she and her group of Ministers were discussing. Opionons were split, admittedly about whether it was really worth it or maybe Abetton should look elsewhere. Far to the south, there was a rather nice looking archipelago of islands, one of which already was technically in Abetton control but the distance and the conditions of that part of the region honestly made traversing it difficult, not to mention the natives there weren't as savage as thought. Over a large map of the continent, Minister of the Military, a Mr. Lev Leps, an aged man of 55, grey hair and a weathered old face had long been discussing things with the equally ambitious Prime Minister Leon Schroeder, the hawkish Parliamentarian who answered to his Majesty were both making the case for war. Plenty of reasons, human resources, more ports, more natural resources.

"Enough, I've heard it all" Beatrix dismissed waving her hand for them to sit. "But at the end of the day, if we're going to war, we need something more to rally behind. Our superior genes is one thing but we need something more to excite the people. Really rally them up."

"Milady I would think living space and imperial glory would be plenty"

"Great enough to rally soldiers but what about the common man? What gets the farmer and the rancher to enlist? What inspires the sailors to join? What gets the women to give up their eldest for a greater cause?"

"Well Milady --" Minister Schroder was ready to go on with a few more details but Beatrix interrupted

"I'll tell you what, a real cause to get behind. We've already seen, Mister Minister how other nations are already showing concern . The righteous oh so goodly Phibeta for example sure has been taking stock of us have they not?"

"Yes, Your Grace, they have as some others have. But as of now we don't imagine they have reason to attack us if we decided to annex Katase for ourselves."

"And let's not give them one if we can help it, I think we need to show Abetton and the rest of the world what kind of people the Katase state is, a nation of treacherous, vile loathsome creatures. The HMS Hero, the Pride of our Fleet, will become our sacrifice upon the alter."

"Not the ship that won the great Abetton War?"

"You know another ship that also bears the name of my dear son the Prince? Your future King? Yes that one. Sabotage it and blame it upon the Katase diplomats here. Seize them, lock them up, hang them, sell them, I don't care just pin it on them. The Press will report how the great ship was destroyed by the Katase government as a way to get the edge on us. Then we shall begin the war proper, blockade their ports, march though the Sirins and begin occupation. We shall formally annex it soon enough. Tonight, as it sits in the harbor the Great ship Hero shall be destroyed and Katase will be blamed for it. Do it."

"As you Wish then, Milady." The men stood from the table and left. Beatrix watched the rain pounding out the window with the great flashes of lightning. The Queen gave a smirk of her brilliant plan and spoke aloud to nobody but herself as it to rationalize it herself, "Finally time to do what Markus didn't have the courage to do. Time for me to take my rightful place in the halls of history."

But this wasn't just for her, yes this would cement her legacy but it would also give her son a mighty vast kingdom to rule over when he came of age. For now though, he was still a child. A child young age 8. He was the second child of the family, behind his elder sister, Beatrix II (so named for her mother) aged 12 and of course there was the youngest, Viola aged 4. All still quite young when their father died and mother became the new Queen. Hero was the heir apparent but until he was of age it would be up to his mother to run the Kingdom before passing the title to him, if she did anyway, theoretically any Monarch can keep the title even if an heir was named but Beatrix had every intention of seeing her beautiful son rise up to become King.

Tonight with the rain and storm pounding Hero was with his sister Beatrix as the siblings poured over a storybook together. Viola was already sound asleep next to them her thumb in her mouth and resting soundly. It seemed only Hero was frightened tonight. The maid servants who were in charge of caring for the young ones though had to separate them "Milord, young Lord it is quite late time for bed."

"Can't I stay with Bea tonight?"

"You know your mother won't approve. You have to become brave now, Young Lord. Come come."

He sighed heavy, to make him a tough young man he was going to have to just deal with it.

"Good night, Hero, sweet dreams" His sister wished him. Hero scurried along with the maid who would see him off to bed. In time these children would see the city fall but for now they were just a bunch of children of nobility and behaved as such.

Late into the night, the Queen sipped down a glass of wine anticipating any moment the fruits of her plan to begin and so it began as the city of Sauville was rocked by a mighty explosion, a deafening loud bang as the mighty navy ship, The Hero went up in flames. It would take along with it several sailors and the ship's admiral and many of the ranking officers, a shame but necessary casualties to feed the blood lust for war. Katase diplomats who'd been in the city to negotiate terms with Abetton were swiftly arrested for espionage and sabotage and murder. The headlines all read the same. Spies of Katase Blow Navy Ship Citizens Demand Answers and so on...Now as 1860 rolled on, plans were in motion through the autumn, winter and now again into the summer as December rolled along. Would the world buy it? Hope so, if not, well who cares, Abetton had the upper hand now, counter intuitive as it is to sink a pride of the fleet, it was working as an effective propaganda tool at home as enlistment numbers jumped high. A formal deceleration of war was made using the ship as justification, how the rest of the world and region would respond would be seen in the months to come but for now, things were in motion, units being formed and ships being built at a rapid pace, it will still take time to get enough ships but for now they had enough a simple blockade could begin, but this war was going to be anything but simple.

Office of the Regent Minister
Goldenberg, Imperial Republic of Wellovia
December 1860

Regent Minster Paul Orval was an older man, pushing 60 with gray hair and freshly groomed mutton chops on the side. A man of pure white Imbri descent, his family had been powerful in Wellovian politics ever since the first colonists landed here some 200 years ago. They had been loyalists during the independence movement, but took the election for independence in stride.

Now, nearly 40 years later, this former Officer of the King's Cavalry was the closest thing Wellovia had to a King. He was technically elected by his fellow Nobles(The House of Nobility, the only Parliament House with any real power). As the chosen Regent of Wellovia, he would rule until his death, abdication, or the House of Nobility's revocation. He had also gained control of the Wig Party, the most powerful political party at the moment. Despite that, the country was changing fast.

A new population of wealthy Merchants had exploded into existence over the last 20 years, and with them even common blood now had resources and capital capable of rivaling many smaller noble families. While the farms that grew the tea, flax, wool, and even silk were still owned by noble families, nearly everything was being bought up by factories who turned them into textiles and tea bricks to be sold overseas for even more. A few nobles had been smart enough to fund their own factories, and now a growing Liberal Party had formed to become the Wigs main rival.

The Wigs still dominated the House of Nobility, which meant they still held the actual power, but the petitions from the House of Commons were getting bolder. The Liberals had rallied the House of Commons to their banner, and now pushed the House of Nobility to give them direct legal authority, especially when it came to regulation. Normally the House of Nobles could ignore any prattling from the Commons, except that now Regent Minster Paul Orval's own Noble rivals were using it as a chance to seize power themselves. Didn't those fools understand that once they give commoners actual legal authority over anything, they couldn't get it back?

While Nobility bickered with the rising Merchants, other threats were emerging. Among the common folks, new political ideas were forming, talks of Democracy and organized Labor. Although the Democratic Party was small, barely taking any seats in the House of Commons, it wasn't hard to see their influence growing. Their main goal was giving the House of Commons power, something the Liberals gladly used, but they also had to separate themselves from the Laborists.

The Laborists wanted something akin to public ownership of property, and were not shy about using violence. The slave uprising in the border territory of Isa a few years ago had been armed by Laborist extremists. Although the rebellion was put down, now there was a debate on continuing slavery. Seeing many nations had already outlawed it, the Liberals argued that slavery was keeping Wellovia from growing. According to Regent Minster Paul Orval, the real reason the Liberals wanted to outlaw slavery was because it would give them a moral victory, while also forcing their rivals to lose money by actually paying their workers.

While dealing with all this, Regent Minster Paul Orval had gotten word that a Abettonite vessel had been sabotaged, and in response, they had invaded Katase. It was common knowledge that Abettetonite politicians had their eyes on conquering the whole continent of Meridional, but he didn't expect them to actually start. Taking a break from the political infighting of the day, he met with his head generals and Admirals to determine what Wellovia was capable of.

"Gentlemen, I'm sure you've all read in the papers that Abetton has invaded Katase. It seems that our powerful trade partner has decided to do more than just talk about controlling the Meridional, but has taken to action. If the Wellovian Imperial Army is called upon to take up arms in our defense, what is our situation?"

First to speak was Lord Edmure Polk, General of the Imperial Guard and de facto Leader of the Army. Much like the Regent Minster, Lord Polk was also an older man in his sixties of pure Imbri descent. Unlike the Regent Minister however, he was balding and instead chose to grow out a long gray beard and wear his stiff light blue Kepi everywhere he could. Luckily no one minded the faux paux in this meeting. Putting on reading glasses, he pulled out a summary report and began paraphrasing.

"Regent Minster, the Imperial Army is not the same army of twenty years ago. As of last year, we have a military force of 135 thousand men, including provincial armies. Roughly, 40 thousand foot infantry, 28 thousand mounted infantry, 15 thousand Cavalry, and around 900 cannons. In addition, the 4th and 5th corps can assemble an additional 77 thousand foot infantry within a month of orders."

"I thought Abetton had a standing army much smaller than that."

"We think they have a standing army between 30 and 50 thousand troops, but they do have more advanced weapons. Their marines can fire up to eight shots a minute with their breech loaders. After hearing about this, the Imperial Guard looked into acquiring new weapons, and now the Imperial Guard Cavalry carries the finest breech loading rifle money can buy."

General Polk looked happy with himself after that comment, but Regent Minister Paul had a follow up question: "It was my understanding that those Breech loading rifles were actually acquired from Abetton."

Recoiling a bit at that comment, the General tried to recover: "The design was, yes, but we have a license to produce it locally. Part of that agreement was to sell a portion of the rifles we made back to Abetton, but in case of war I would assume we keep them."

"Was that you who negotiated that deal?"

"Yes Regent, it was my understanding the Imperial Guard should have the best weapons available to us."

"Fair, and what of the rest of the Army? I doubt we'll send the Imperial Guard in right away."

"The current model 1855 rifle is good, more accurate than the 1840. It cannot match a breech loader, but our biggest strength in fighting a defensive war will be our numbers. Even if they defeat our Navy," General Polk gave the Admiral a sideways glance, "and focus everything on Goldenberg, we can still hold the city. The Imperial Guard alone is around 11 thousand infantry supported by 8 thousand Cavalry. Realistically, they would want to land elsewhere, and if they do we can trade land and time to stretch out their frontlines until we can break through and cut them off."

"And if they cross through the Kashgar Emirate?"

"Then the Emirate is either on their side, or against them. The southern mountains will slow them down, but the same concept applies. If we need to call up more soldiers, we have the manpower and spare rifles to do so. Even if the Emirate joins them, we can arm nearly an extra hundred thousand soldiers."

"What offensive options do we have?"

The General looked at the Regent Minster with an inquisitive look, but responded accordingly: "3rd and 2nd Corps are our main fighting force and would be ready. We could probably even send the Ordenite Mercenary regiment with them. Unfortunately, The 4th is too scattered in the mountains to be used offensively."

"Understood, I have no plans to propose aggressive actions, but better to be prepared." With that, Regent Minster Paul Orval turned to Admiral Lord Thomas Withaus. "Admiral, how capable is our navy?"

Being one of the youngest members at the table, Admiral Withaus had been instrumental in bringing the Navy up to date with steam and iron. Early fifties, with more salt than pepper in his full head of hair, he had been a sailor most of his life. His appointment was only after he managed to demonstrate his side wheel frigate's combat abilities to the previous Regent Minister.

"Much like the General's Army, we are more than capable of defending the homeland. The Iron floating fortress IRS Determined is the backbone of the Home Fleet and can shield any port from invasion. Plus we still have the six Golden Bay Class Ships of the Line in service, rated at 96 guns each.

In terms of defense, Home Fleet and North Fleet will watch their coasts, they are mostly Frigates and Sloops, but have the Determined and two Golden Bay Classes, the IRS Dauntless and IRS Golden Bay to give them a punch.

In terms of offense, 3rd Fleet is still our oldest far reaching fleet. The IRS Galant observed the Abetton invasion of the Sugar Islands, so Vice Admiral Douglas is familiar with their tactics. They have received a few modern ships in the form of a side wheel, and two screw, sloops, but the bulk of the modern vessels are part of the 4th Fleet. I believe our new Iron Frigates can be used to show that Wellovia is no longer a weak colony, but becoming a power in its own right. I believe the 4th fleet could even make the Phibetan navy think twice."

Paul listened before responding carefully: "I know my predecessor had a lot of faith in your new ideas of a Steam powered Navy, but I hope they are as good as you say." Regent Minster Paul Orval looked over the table one more time. "Let me take this information to the House of Nobility, and we'll decide what to do. Thank you all."

Residence of Esmeralda Polk,
Wellovian Ambassador to Abetton
Sauville, Abetton
December 1860

Esmeralda was only in her forties, with dark brown hair, and exceptional fashion tastes. Sauville was a much more cultured and beautiful Capital than Goldenberg could ever hope for. It was such a perfect place for her, rather than being stuck in a family farm. Sauville embraced progress and their Queen was as powerful as she was beautiful. The old geezers running Wellovia still relied on the old plantation methods to generate wealth, but Esmeralda knew their economic future rested in industry, not agriculture.

In short, she was a staunch supporter of the Liberal Party, and the Regent Minister was doing everything he could to replace her with someone more amicable to his policies. The Embassy mission to the most powerful nation on their continent was a prestigious position. One given to Esmeralda by the previous Regent Minister when her cousin, Lord General Edmure Polk, came here to negotiate for military weapons. Unfortunately for current Regent Minister Paul Orval, Esmeralda had taken to court politics like a fish to water, and had many friends in Parliament who refused to let Paul find a suitable replacement. Therefore she remained, if only to spite her current Regent.

When Abetton invaded the Sugar Islands, Esmeralda negotiated to allow the IRS Galant the right to neutral observation. She had also been instrumental in opening up more trade between the two nations, a feat which sounded better than it actually had been. After all, the Sugar islands were colonies to support Abetton, but in exchange for coal and friendly ports, their merchants were allowed to trade a small amount of their stock as payment.

With Abetton now invading a nation bordering Wellovia, the Wigs back home were worried. They saw the Abetton invasion of the Sugar Islands, and this invasion as the beginning of a pattern of conquest. Abetton was small, but powerful. They worried the Queen would come for Wellovia next.

The Liberals on the other hand, worried the Wigs would use this fear to cut off trade and gut the economic prosperity they had achieved following the Abettetonite model. She had to do something to fix this situation. Letters from home painted a tense picture, and she knew she had to make a decision before the Regent Minister formally declared an embargo against Abetton, or worse, military support of Katase.

Writing a letter to the proper authorities, Esmeralda knew she had to get a mission started early.

"Dear Foreign Ministry,

My heart goes out to the families of the crew of the HMS Hero. A tragedy that no doubt shall be properly avenged. On behalf of the Wellovian Court, I grieve with you. Our two great nations have shared this continent for over forty years, ever since our original colony elected to be a sovereign state. In that time our nations have been peaceful and kind to one another, sharing in trade, and resupply of ships, to ensure we both prosper and make our shared continent a paradise on earth. As the Ambassador from Wellovia, I have always strived to bring our two nations closer together.

Yet, I find myself receiving letters from home, people who are deeply concerned with the current situation. The Abettetonite invasion of Katase has brought up questions about the full intentions of Abetton regarding the rest of the Meridional continent, and I would like to alleviate the concerns of the Wellovian Court. I would dearly like to discuss the situation with either the Queen or a suitable representative, and find a way to ensure we remain close, either through a formal Treaty of Friendship, or a Non-Aggression pact

Your humble servant,

Esmeralda Polk

”Let me get this straight,” exclaims a confused Prime Minister Louis Partaridge. “The kingdom of Abetton plans on going to war with Katase, over some lousy frigate?”

“It would appear so,” says First Lord of The Admiralty, Sir Reginald Gutterman, who has just interrupted breakfast of the prime minister, his wife, and the PM’s guest, Lady Jamie McNeil, who was there to discuss the appointment of officers in the 12th Dragoons. Sir Gutterman hands over a newspaper from the kingdom. As it reads, Spies of Katase Blow Navy Ship Citizens Demand Answers. This would come as a shock to the prime minister. He knows that His Majesty, the Grand Prince of Katase has come previously to meet with the three sibling monarchs a few months ago as a way to show gratitude for the aid after the Katase storms of 1858. From the delegation over there, he has heard about the Katase people, and how nice and welcoming they are. He wouldn’t have guessed that they would be sending spies. Perhaps this was an elaborate hoax created by Abetton to justify war goals? Or maybe they were crying over spilled milk. After all, it was one lousy naval vessel out of many, probably more powerful than that one.

“I…” He began, “I do not know how to feel about this. On the one hand, I find it hard to believe that Katase would be sending out spies on missions to sabotage other nations’ military equipment. But on the other hand, if they did, then it is just plain stupid for Abetton to justify war over an outdated, outclassed gunboat”.

That’s called foreshadowing

“Prime Minister, if I may” Sir Gutterman interrupted. “I would like to point out that a couple of months before this incident, a delegation from Katase were in the capital negotiating to settle the territorial dispute of the Sirin Mountain Region”. It was at that moment, figurative candles were beginning to flicker upon their heads. It would seem that the dice have been cast.

“In any case sir. I just wanted to bring this to your attention. I better leave for the office”.

“But Sir Gutterman,” Elenor exclaimed. “Why don’t you stay a little while, for breakfast”.

“Afraid I do not have time for breakfast ma’am. I have a very important meeting with one of the fleet admirals. But don’t you worry. I’ll grab a quick bite at the local bakery”. Reginald opens the front door, reaching for his bicorne hat and cane.

“Until later, Prime Minister” he finishes, as he leaves.

“It would seem that war is inevitable. Frankly, I feel a little jealous” Jamie says, breaking the bit of silence that fell on them once the First Lord left.

“Not all that glitters is gold Lady McNiel,” Louis cautioned him. “What do you make of it your ladyship?”

“I don’t believe a single word out of their mouths,” Jamie says bluntly, reading through the papers. “Really think about it Mr. Partaridge. A delegation from Katase is also being blamed for the incident. I don’t think this would be a chain reaction, but perhaps a discreet way of making Katase look like they are in the wrong”.

“Perhaps, and as much as I have bashed it for being outdated. Out of all the ships, why this one? The one that has been the pride of Abetton’s naval force?”

“Look, I don’t know what their queen is thinking. Perhaps symbolic of Abetton pride. I do know for certain that they will cling on to this event like gravy does on potato cakes, they will… nay, are using this to justify their war goals” she finishes ominously. Louis breathed out a sigh of annoyance. This was going to be a hectic morning in parliament.

“In any case, we will hear about it once their majesties get word of this. Now then, Lady McNiel, have you decided on who you would like as officers in the 12th Dragoons”.

“Well, I have been eyeing on one Ms. Milena Thompson. She would make a fine captain indeed.

Several of weeks has passed. Word eventually reached the crown. King Yohannes, the eldest of the monarchs and the calm and diligent summoned the parliament for an emergency meeting in the house of peers. Knowing well what happened during the Isotola Wars that plagued the days when he and his siblings lived as orphans in Whitington Falls when the war was not going as well as many would have hoped, but also remember the words of Sir Nathaniel of Shiledfried, protector of children around the world. He gave a statement to the parliament on which he declared neutrality, but would remain diligent to the event at hand.

An Open International Statement Procured by His Majesty, King Yohannes to The House of Peers and The House of Commons

Members of the noble house. It is with great sorrow to hear the events that have unfolded on one night in February in the year of the Heroes, 1860. As a kingdom with a strong naval tradition, we sympathize with the loss of the great ship, Hero, along with its crew and brave sailors.

However, I must express the difference of opinion that I share that the Abetton queen doesn’t. I do not believe that the Katase delegates were to blame for the sabotage. It is in my good faith, as well as the faith of my younger brother and sister, that no one in Katase, would be so angry with their neighbors that they would just sail by and destroy an Abetton naval vessel and NOT worry about the repercussions of going to war with a powerful nation.

I would like to also bring to attention that the Abettonese government has been on a jingoistic fervor with the conquests of islands that belonged to Marche Noire and Brasillistan, as well as the shared opinion of the conquest of the Meridional continent, of which Katase shares. This kind of warmongering and conquest without a proper clause is not acceptable.

Therefore, I ask the parliament, the Prime Minister, and our delegates throughout the region to declare our neutrality. However, my siblings and I will keep a diligent eye on these two nations as their relation unfolds for the world to see. I pray that the region is not engulfed in another war as terrible as the Isotola Wars were just a previous time ago.

King Yohannes Warmingham
Co-Monarch of Phibeta

Of course, there was more than meets the eye in this statement. Under the tables of diplomacy, King William IV, the younger brother of Yohannes (and co-monarch) sent a telegram to the Grand Prince, via the military attachè…

Telegram:

To Grand Prince Kamado of the Principality of Katase,

A ship will be dispatched bearing modern military equipment, and a few officers. Along with £2.4 million. This is all done in secret.

King William Warmingham IV
Co-Monarch of Phibeta

HMS Creeton. Port Gallagher Naval Dockyards, Gallagher, The Cartune Isle Colonies. December 1860. 10 Months Later

It was freezing tonight. Captain Octavia Winthrop hated the cold weather of this part of the world at this time of the year. She stands, dressed in her naval blue greatcoat, watches over the bow of the ship. The conditions of the cold weather were not too horrid, the port didn’t freeze over, so ships could still traverse the waves. But, it was unbearably cold for sailors and officers. Hands deep in the coat’s pocket, she blew off some air, precipitation making her breath visible via smoke. Just as she was contemplating her job as captain of the oldest steam frigate of the fleet, one of her trusted officers, First Lieutenant Connie Bradley approaches the captain, saluting each other.

“Telegram from the First Lord ma’am” Connie states, handing the note over to the captain. She reads it and sighs in relief. It would seem that she and her crew were being posted elsewhere, where too?

“Lieutenant, tell the engine room to get those engines ready, get our helmsman on deck, and request for members of the royal marines at the garrison to board. We are headed to the Abetton-Katase Peninsula to preside over a conflict”.

“Right away ma’am”. She starts heading down, but before she left…

“Excuse me ma’am, but about the Abettons. Do you believe in that the incident was done as actual sabotage?”. This was a common debate around the empire, whether or not the attack on the HMSF Hero was deliberate, or was staged by Abetton.

“I have never believed a single word that came out of their mouths. Not one bit. I assume you were taught history as well?”

“Of course ma’am”

“Then you would know that we too did the same thing in this very port”.

“Yes, back in the 1770s, our forefathers staged a sabotage event of one of the frigates stationed here. A deliberate way to strip autonomous power among the colonies. But that caused a revolution to happen if I’m not mistaken”.

“Correction, an insurrection! We were able to shoot down the rebel leaders and regain control of the colonies. The point is that our forefathers did it, then so can them. We are not above it, they are not above it. No one is above manipulating events to produce results. Now, prepare the ship!”

“Yes, ma’am!” Connie leaves to do what she is ordered. The ship slowly begins to warm up from the burning coal bunkers. The black smoke billowing from the chimney, the frigate leaves the port, the helmsman is at the control of the wheel. She was the first iron-hulled steam frigate of the fleet. What would be in store for this ship, no one knows, but they are certain that they would not return to Phibetan shores until their task is complete.

The Royal Palace. Nadeshiko, Katase.

Ever since the Sauville Trumpet of Abetton “slapped” Phibeta’s honor, diplomatic relations with Katase has certainly grown. Which was out of concern of an Abetton dominated continent. Though it isn’t much of Phibeta’s business, it is vital and mentioned several times that the balance of powers established in the post-Isotola War era would be broken from this war. Since that time, a diplomat and a military attache have been established with both government approval in the capital of Katase. Just this night, the military attache, General Lloyd Benton has requested an audience with the Grand Prince. It was a way to gather information on what is going on at the frontlines if Phibeta does enter the war. And its also a way to share with the Grand Prince some of the technological advances that could turn the tides of war.

In the halls of the Grand Palace, the guards announce the arrival of the Phibetan military attache. Lloyd approaches His Royal Highness, bowing in front of him as if he was one of the three sibling monarchs from his homeland.

“Your Royal Highness” he begins, “Their Majesties wishes you a good evening, with hopes that the current war situation is going well?”

Plans had been in motion for months, now it was growing to a full speed ahead. Slowly over the months the supply lines had been laid over the land of Abetton, like a very long bridge. Troops would march out of the great Capital of Sauville in waves and set up little posts, miles out to begin the process of being able to feed troops towards the land war of Katase. The distance grew little by little each month and before long, it would be at the base of the Sirin Moutains, the narrow strip of land that connected Abetton with Katase. Today, this sunny late summers morn, the Queen took to a stage in the heart of the city to address another large batch of troops. "My men, and women, you fight in my name but you do not merely fight for me! You fight for your mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, all kin near and far. You fight for the Lords and Ladies who provide you with the towns, the roads, the land you farm, the factories you work, the mills you construct. In time, this land will be larger than we all know it. Abetton will be a power to reckon with. As Katase will begin to realize, they will be soon our subjects. March with a steady pace, a song in your heart and no fear. Bring glory to our Kingdom and let the world hear Abetton's thunderous voice, a voice that calls 'we are not the small kingdom you thought, we are a global power! A Mighty Empire. May she rule the lands and the seas for all time.' My fighting men, as you set upon your steeds and march through the countryside, every town and village from here to Sirin will be there to greet you and welcome you the hereos of our land. May the Gods smile favorably upon us all."

The crowd erupted into applause as the queen smiled and waved and made her departure. Next was the speeches from other Ministers of her Council and the Prime Minister.

"Your Highness." A relatively young woman greeted her, but she was no ordinary woman, she was Abetton's Foreign Minister Francesca Forester , yes even in this era, Abetton was surprisingly progressive when it came to the role of women in society but terribly regressive in the matters of race and slavery. Honestly the Foreign Ministry in this era was pretty minor in the rank of Ministers, they did handle some matters of foreign affairs and policy but any major negotiations fell upon the Monarch and Prime Minister. They mostly served as an extra liaison to foreign dignitaries of lesser status, minor diplomats and the such.

"Ah, Minister Forester, good to see you. Please, let's get out of the beating sun."

"Yes, of course." She escorted the lady to the shade of the nearest tree where they could talk. "Forgive my direct approach to you, Your Highness, with the Honorable Prime Minister Schroeder, currently in The Colony I had a Foreign Matter come up that I must handle"

"Of course, think nothing of it, what is it I can do for you, Minister?"

"Well Your Highness, we've gotten a concerned letter from Wellovian Court."

"Wellovian...Oh yes the nation to our North."

"Yes, Your Highness." Wellovia was more like two nations away though with another range of imposing impassable mountains along the northern border, it may as well be a world away. "Anyway, with our expanding military acts and our intent to annex Katase, there has been concerned raised about their status as a nation." Surprisingly, Wellovia had been a blip on Katase's radar, the nations didn't really have much in the way of formal relations but they did occasionally cross paths and kept a friendly demeanor towards one another, especially when Abetton came into it's island colony.

"What concerns them, Minister? We've only expressed desire to take upon the lands of Meridional for ourselves."

"Of Course, Highness, but do remember this is a large continent. We do tend to almost think of ourselves as an island we do share the entire land. Your rallying words, powerful have caught their ears and they are understandably concerned. They make no threats, quite opposite they would like to broker a peace with us."

"Mmmm." The lands of the north, well they didn't interest Beatrix much in a sense she wished to occupy it, but having a powerful ally on the world stage? Perhaps this was a good chance. "Lady Minister, see if they can dispatch someone of their House or anyone of their Ministers of State to come and discuss this matter with me, I shall gladly receive them myself."

"As you Wish, it shall be done." She bowed for the Queen and went along to take care of the matter.

From The Abetton Foreign Ministry,

Addressed to the Ministries of Wellovia and to Miss Esmeralda Polk

Dear Miss Polk and all other readers this concerns,

Your words have reached us and Her Royal Highness, Queen Beatrix expresses her great appreciation of your sharing of the sadness of the loss of our great ship, The Hero, a ship that was commissioned and named in honor of the son of the Late King, future King of Abetton, His Royal Highness, Prince Hero. The ship was a great pride of the fleet and did accomplish Abetton's goal of becoming a true naval force.

Now, Her Royal Highness has also heard your concerns and would be delighted to discuss this with you or any others you wish to have come talk the matters over. While I cannot say for sure what will result, HRH has also expressed the possibility of a mutual pact, allyship but I'm also certain something as simple as a non-aggression pact will be discussed too, all options are on the table. Surely a mutual arrangement can be reached between us all and we can become closer allies.

We look forward to seeing you as soon as possible,

Respectfully yours,
Francesca Forester

The Sugar Islands - Abetton Colony, December 1860

As mentioned, in Abetton, the slave trade was alive and well, some slaves came from overseas, some were coming from Neighboring Katase even, mostly those along the border and others were being plucked from Abetton itself, yes even its own residence, whether colonial nationals or just people unlucky enough to be born in a low social class. Some were taken by force (often the foreign or Katase citizens) and some were sold, often by desperate hungry families or just families who simply didn't want another child. Boys and girls, mostly late-childhood-to-early adolescence, prime of their youth, others into their early adulthood. The elderly and sick were usually rejected. In the port of Charlotte, sat a large steamer with smoke billowing out of it's stacks. Today was a pretty unpleasant day, angry black storm clouds were gathering, the seas were already growing rough. Slowly but surely a fresh batch of human slaves set for the mainland were being loaded. This group was mostly children but some young adults were among them. The captain called out from the deck "Can we move it along, weather's turning and we need to get out and going!"

"All right all right, keep yer shirt on, we're almost done here!"

"What's a few worthless sacks of flesh if I can't get out of the port?!" The captain yelled back

"It's less payment for you if you can't squeeze a full load aboard so shut yer trap!"

Dockworkers and Captains always seemed to go at it, a Captain eager to get out of port regardless of weather and the dock crew doing everything they could to make sure things were done properly because if something (or someone) was missing, it was on them and it came out of their pay. On this voyage was a young teenage female named Elaina, she'd migrated to the colony over a decade ago with her family, her father heard something of "gold in dem hills" but as such, no gold was to be found, the family went bankrupt and owed a lot of money and the only way to get out of bondage was to sell their daughter. Couldn't sell their son, oh no, he was going places, he'd save the family but their daughter a girl who couldn't speak properly was worthless. Where she'd wind up was anyone's guess, slaves did anything from be factory workers, mine workers, to household labor to noble and wealthy families. A much older woman, a middle aged woman named Rosie was also going aboard. She'd been in bondage for pretty much her life, master to master, mainland to the colony now back to the mainland after being lost in a bet. She took pity on the young teen next to her. "First voyage?"

"y-y-y-yes ma-a'm." Elaina meekly replied

"My fourth I think. Gonna be a rough one, my dear." No sense in sugar coating it, that storm was going to be on them and it was gonna be hell. "Just hang onto me, I'll keep you safe"

"R-really?"

"Amazing as it is to find sympathy among fellow captives, I like to look after younger girls like you. Trust me."

"Quite," The sailors on the ground ordered "Now march" They pushed them along to board, walking up the gangway to their doom again.

Another figure to note, a small child, Iroha, a girl from the Auroran Empire, part of the archipelago that Abetton had a single island claim in, she'd be of note as the first possible cat girl in Abetton history. The thunder made her recoil in fear but she had no time to quiver as she too was pushed to get moving. Among the men was another young man, Leo Burton, an adolescent at 16, an example of an Abetton native from the mainland, born to a poor family. He was sent to the colony a a farm laborer but another farm purchased him so he was going back to the mainland.

This small handful of slaves were on their way to Abetton but first might cross paths upon the stormy seas with a certain HMS Creeton ship. The Captain, retired Colonel Burton Fox, he had no qualms about being a slave ship transporter, it was great money for him and on his own ships he had is share of servants. With the ship underway and already facing the rough seas he grumbled "Those blasted crew, hoped to beat the storm out of port but here we are."

At his side his wife and First Officer and former Calvary Woman, Cecee Fox, long black hair, steely read eyes, she enjoyed the rough weather, the excitement of the seas, no horse could bring her the same pleasure, she was glad to be out of the Calvary and sailing at her husband's side. Plus it was fun to watch the cargo have to take the brunt of the weather as water would seep into the hold where they were kept.

"What's the fun of sailing without a little weather. But this is quite a storm isn't it?"

"Quite, My dear. But nothing compared to the storm Abetton is about to bring upon Katase."

"Speaking of, perhaps we should set our sights there after our stop in Pucelle." Pucelle, considered to be the southern hub thanks it's location on the sea. "Once we take the land for ourselves, a whole new market. Let's get in there while we can before the rest of the market. "

"You do have a good eye for this business, my dear. I suppose we shall. I'm sure by the time of our arrival ports will be opened for trading. All right, my dear, tonight after I hand the helm off, we shall begin charting our new bid for a berth."

She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. "Easy does it, I still have to get us through the storm first"

"Mmm fair enough"

Sauville - February 1860

Another day, another failed negotiation with the Abetton. In the last couple of years, the Kingdom had been doing its share of saber rattling against Katase and more and more it was looking like Abetton was chomping at the bit to get into Katase, to truly dominate the southern continent from sea-to-shining sea. It's hard to really see why, Katase has resources sure, but so does Abetton, Abetton probably moreso having more arable land, not to say Katase didn't have any, it did. It had mines, coal, everything else it's neighbor had, just a smaller land size comparatively speaking. Leaving Castle Sauville again, young Ambassador Hideki Matsuoka and his wife, Yumiko and an handful of staff were escorted through the rain into the coach, where they'd be escorted back to their hotel. . Both from Katase but dressed in Abetton dress, that is Western attire, a black suit for Hideki and a cute frilly dress for Yumiko and similarly most of the staff (save a few) were also dressed in suits and dresses, only a couple in traditional kimono. Relations with both Abetton and Phibeta over the years had brought plenty with it including global dress so hey when in Rome, or Sauville this case. They'd been here for two months trying in vein to get the Queen to back off and respect Katase's territorial integrity and likewise they would as well.

Hdeki looked discouraged while Yumiko tried her best to comfort him. "My the stone roads are nice but still kind of bumpy wouldn't you say, dear?" She patted his shoulder. She awaited a response but nothing came of him as he stared out the window. Not easy, it felt like the fate of the country was resting on his shoulders. "Come on, cheer up. So today didn't go well, tomorrow is another day. We'll stay till they see reason. Didn't you also see the young Prince and Princesses? So cute!"

"Yeah. They are really cute." They didn't have kids of their own, yet but someday for sure.

"Yumi...I just don't know, I feel like they don't want to see reason and are stalling."

"Maybe, but come on, as father said all politics is a game, it's all about making the right moves. We could always take them to a game of Go and see how they fair against the all-time-champ" She smiled smugly of her accomplishment on that.

"Right now, that would be the best thing to see."

"Want to play me later?"

"Why bother you always beat me."

"I'll let you win this time."

"Mmm no"

"aww meanie"

He poked at her cheek "Will you not do that" She pouted to him "Done that to me ever since we were kids"

"And it's just as cute now as it was then."

The couple's banter seemed to lift his spirits some more which had him feeling good about it. Late in the evening at their hotel, they did have one game and yes she did beat him in no-time-flat, but now they were simply relaxing, listening to the still pounding rain at their window. Hideki was reading a book, a work of native Abetton, not a bad little novel, as Yumi was writing letters to friends and family back home. A soft knock at their door as Hideki got off the bed to answer it, seeing a hotel staffer there holding out an envelope. "Telegram for you sir."

"Oh thank you, good sir." He bowed for the gentleman who did the same and closing the door behind him he began reading.

"A telegram?" Yumiko asked

"That's right....Huh it's from the Abetton Government, they said they wanted to see me urgently."

"What, right now? It's nearly nine."

"Oh I think it's about our ship, I guess there's some little detail I got to sort out, no matter."

He reached for his coat and hat

"Still, now and in the rain?"

"It does say to come down right away to get this matter sorted. I'm sure it's nothing, love, probably some silly thing with the paperwork." He kissed her and left her be "Be back soon."

"All right."

Taking a coach down to the harbor he followed the directions on the message. "Hello?" He called out entering into an empty dark office. As he searched around he saw emerging from the darkness a figure brandishing a billy club ready to pounce and before he could do anything to defend himself he was knocked out cold. It would be a while later the large explosion that would rock the harbor would echo out across the city and he and his group were set to be the patsies of it. When he'd report to police to report his mugging the suspicions would turn onto him given he was the only figure seen there. The telegram sent to him to lure him was also coded in a easy cipher to make it look like it was a call to action to sabataoge the ship. Now the Katase delegation was jailed. Hideki would be set to be hung for his treachery, Yumiko and others would be sold off.

December 1860

The events that transpired those months ago had finally given Abetton its justification for war and now Abetton was ready to make promise on the matter. Katase would have time to get its affairs in order to determine if it could fight or if quick surrender would be the better option. Hard as it was to consider such a thing, the nation had to think of its people. the Royal family had multiple generations under its roof, the head of the family and of course Grand Prince and Leader of this country Grand Prince Kamado. The Oldest at 60. Kind of odd to be considered a "Prince" at 60 but the old titles stood from when Katase itself was a colony over a century ago, (and maybe yet again if Abetton gets its way). Today would hopefully be a good day, as General Lloyd Benton would be meeting with Kamado. The General was greeted by his daughter, Himeko with her daughter, his granddaughter at his side. The palace did have staff normally but given the war situation, all staff were dismissed so they can support their family needs and only critical members were retained.

"Welcome General" She bowed for him "My father is eager to see you. Hinako, show him your respect and bow, my darling."

"Oh right" The little girl bowed before him.

"Please follow me." Leading him through a series of doors both the paper screens and the big wood kind they arrived in the main conference room, Komado stood as the General walked in. "Thank you for coming, Honorable General" he welcomed him to take a seat next to his. "Well slowly but surely. But I'm afraid the outlook isn't great. We have good land force but Abetton still has us beat in both Naval and Ground."

HMS Creeton. The Sugar Islands, Abetton Colony. December 1860

The morning storm battered the decks of the HMS Creeton. But, unlike many other frigates from the old age of sail, this ship was not rocking or rolling on the open seas as much. The ship has been made with strong material, which could withstand the strong and fierce winds and waves nature might bring upon them. However, it doesn’t mean that the winds were favorable to sail, but thanks to the coal-fueled engines, they could navigate the waters with ease, and with a large supply of coal from their colonies, they could make the trek and still have enough to provide warmth and comfort for the crew. The rough storm was still a bother to most of the crew however, the lookouts, boatswains, and carpenters were on deck, the former looking out for obstacles, the other two to maintain the ship’s condition.

Captain Octavia Winthrop was enjoying her breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, potato hash, and bread in her cabin. A fair better than most of the sailors on board, though they too were well-fed, but as captain, she is commander, and such is granted fair better accommodations. She sips down on some hot cocoa, and all of a sudden, a knock is heard on her door.

“Ma’am, permission to enter?”

“Come in”. The quartermaster of the ship, Petty Officer Franklin Webb approaches the captain.

“Ma’am, I believe there is something out there that should come to your attention on the starboard side”

“What do you mean? It’s probably the island chains, the Sugar Islands, it means we are almost at the peninsula”.

“It’s a ship ma’am”. That part was what got the captain interested. This lane was usually a shipping lane of Phibeta, a trade route from one of the port cities of Katase. Many ships of Phibeta have mentioned in passing that merchant slave ships were in the area. It would be something for the captain to investigate.

“Alright, let me get my coat. It’s downpouring hard today”. The captain grabs her coat, her raincoat, and her bicorne hat. When she arrived on top of the deck, she sees what the other sailors were clamoring about. In the distance, she sees a steamship, a paddle wheeler it would seem like, like many merchant ships of the day. She notices that the ship’s standard was purple, white, and had a shield to the left. That was a naval symbol well known in this area of water. It was an Abettonese merchant ship, and many will know that it holds goods and slaves alike. The captain knows that foreign policy allows Phibetan naval vessels to seize slave ships and detain all crew involved. However, one must always be cautious of how it goes. One wrong step and it could trigger a war, and Abetton is surely on a hype train when it comes to war.

“It’s an Abetton merchant ship,” says First Lieutenant Connie Bradley. “It’s well known that this nation harbors the slave trade on board. Shall we approach her and her crew?”

“I believe we should” Captain Winthrop replies. But standard protocol notes that we should alert their crew about how they are in Phibeta’s shipping and naval lanes, and this subject to investigation” she turns to both P.O. Webb and the head-gunner, Standing Officer Eric Abbott. “Officer Webb, have your crew signal the merchant ship, through the signaling flags, and signal to them that we demand to investigate the vessel, as it is within our shipping lane”.

“Yes ma’am”

“Officer Abbott,” she continues, “If the ship fails to respond, fire a warning shot on the opposite side of where the ship is. And only a warning shot. Do not fire on the ship itself!”

“Yes ma’am”

“One more thing, Officer Webb, if the ship still fails to stop, set our course on to them, and pursue them. Do not fire on them, but pursue them until they give up. If they are too far for us to pursue by then, we will let them off, but we will report this to the admiralty. Does everyone understand?”

“Aye!”

“Good”. The officers and sailors run about to do their duty. Looks like a little excitement before their destination. She turns to First Lieutenant Bradley.

“Bradley, send a telegraph to the admiralty, we are securing a merchant slave ship off the Sugar Islands”.

“You sure ma’am? We seem pretty far from the telegraph station in Gallagher?”

“HMS Billington and HMS Farnsworth heading back from the Gilligan Isles, I’m pretty sure we are still in range. They will hopefully relay the message to the telegraph station who will relay that to the admiralty”.

“Yes ma’am,” The first lieutenant heads down to the newly designated telegraph room, which was still in its infancy, with an underwater cable that was recently stretched out to the colony of Dillydale, increasing range. The telegraph worked like flag signaling, she inserted the message, as if she were signaling a ship with flags, and hopefully, it would pick up. And, though weak, was picked up by the passing HMS Billington to the west.

Quick deviation from route… securing a merchant ship… could be handling slaves.

Meanwhile, the flagman started waving his arms with the flags at hand, messaging to the merchant ship at sea, in the internationally recognized semaphore alphabet.

This is HMS Creeton. As you are in Phibetan shipping lanes, we demand to inspect your ship for slaves

Meanwhile, a young lady was also on board, not as a sailor, but as a journalist, from the famous city newspaper company, The Weston Mail, to document the tales of the crew and Captain of the ship.

“Oh! What a scoop!” said the journalist, whose name is Amelia Oliver. “Captain, can I document this great chase! It’ll surely make great headlines for The Weston Mail!”

“Oh. Um, sure. I see no harm in that” Captain Winthrop replies.

Kensington Palace. Weston, Phibeta.

Kensington Palace, the home of the sibling monarchs. The current monarchs of Phibeta, and her empire. Prime Minister Partaridge requested a meeting with the monarchs on the Abetton-Katase issue. His goal is to establish an emissary within their kingdom to contact Her Majesty, and see if there could be a way for Abetton and Katase to work things out and bring peace in the region. He looks at his watch, it was almost time for their majesties to arrive in the room, just in time for afternoon tea. The monarchs enter the room, their presence announced by the household staff. The eldest, King Yohannes II, the younger brother, King William IV, and the youngest sister, Queen Diane. The prime minister bows to their majesties, for he is but a humble servant to the throne.

“Your majesties. I thank you for granting me the request of an audience”.

“Yes, yes, no need for formalities prime minister. What is it that you need?” Yohannes replies.

“Is it about that royal decree on tea? Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t want to do that, but to maintain such a vast empire, we have to maintain a perfect budget” said Queen Diane. King William was scarfing down a few biscuits. It is strange really, that just 46 years ago, these monarchs were living in exile in the town of Whitington Falls, abandoned on the streets after the death of their father, the civil war, and the hostile takeover by Lord Salarus, 15th Earl of Partoston. He has since been exiled to Isla Exila in 1812. These monarchs were unlike most others in the past, as they had no prior manners of the court, which was probably the reason for the great wave of social reforms.

“No, it’s not about that your majesty. I want to express my concerns over the current war situation between Abetton and Katase. You are aware of the situation, correct?”

“Of course!” King Yohannes replies, “What subject of the empire would not know of the situation?”

“The Abetton menace as one of the household staff, the chaplain I believe. He told me how Abetton went to war for slaves, land, and resources like that. How they always bully poor little Katase” says King William.

“Well, he is partially right. But I believe that peace can be achieved”

“Are you serious prime minister?”

“Of course your majesty. I believe that there has been some great misunderstanding between the two nations. I believe if we are to understand Abetton policy, we could find a mutual relation between those two and bring them to the negotiation table!”. In the eyes of the monarchs, this might seem possible. With the establishment of the Katase emissary two years earlier, they were able to boost relations with Katase. They are a great friend in the area of the region, bolstering trade with the colonial port of Gallagher in the Cartune Isles. Abetton on the other hand, only a few merchant ships dare to enter the ports. However, one small mistake, and things could end up the way the Katase diplomats did only a few months ago.

“What do you propose?”

“I propose an official diplomatic emissary be established in the capital of Sauville. That way, we can have knowledge of events going on in the war on both sides. Gain more insight into Abettonese ideology, and hopefully find a way to settle this war! With your permission, your majesties. I have already found a suitable candidate”. The monarchs continued to think. It would require massive amounts of security, since the wake of the Katase incident months back.

“Prime minister” King Yohannes starts in a more serious tone than usual. “You have our permission to send an emissary to Abetton. I will write to her majesty of our intent. In the meantime, I shall provide the emissary transportation via the gunboat, HMS Emerald. They will be accompanied by two royal marine sailors, to defend the emissary so what happened to Katase’s delegates doesn’t happen to us. I trust you understand the dangers of such a mission?”

“Of course your majesty, I understand” Louis replies, a sigh of relief from hearing that. He stands and bows to them once more. “I have a parliamentary business to attend to. I bid you a good afternoon”. He leaves the drawing-room. King Yohannes turns to his younger brother.

“William. Fetch the Lord Chamberlain. Have him send pen and paper. I shall write to Her Majesty at once”.

“Okay, Yohannes”. William leaves to find him.

“Hey, Yohannes,” says Diane. “Should we also have the emissary keep an eye out for Abetton’s and Katase’s neighbor to the north?”

“Oh, Wellovia right?”

“Yeah, What our intelligence can gather, they have joined the side of Abetton in a mutual pact”.

“Yes. I think we shall. We also have our merchant fleet and naval force transferring a shipping lane from our colony of the Gilligan Isles to the Cartune Isles down south close by to Wellovia’s coast. They will keep looking out as well”. Just then, the Lord Chamberlain, Baron Rotweller of Shipton, enters the room.

“Excuse me, sir, pen and paper as your brother requested”.

“Thank you very much. Lord Chamberlain, Diane, I’ll need some time alone please”.

“As you wish sir”

“Okay, Yohannes. I’ll see you later” they both leave as Yohannes pens down his and his sibling’s statements.

To Her Majesty, Queen Beatrix of the Kingdom of Abetton,

We write to you on the relation of our great empires. We are sure that you are aware that relations with our nations have been, shall we say, rough between the edges, especially with your government’s current stance on indentured servitude.

However, as We spoke with our prime minister, We believe that a severe misunderstanding has come between our people and perhaps can be resolved with diplomacy, especially with your nation’s current state of war with your neighbor and our new trade partner, Katase.

Therefore, We ask for permission to establish a diplomatic emissary within your capital as it will be the most rapid means of communication with your empire, much like we did with Katase.

It seems wishful thinking, but We are sure that peace can be achieved and the balance of powers in this region will maintain as it has since the Isotola Wars of the 1790s.

Co-Monarch of Phibeta

For sake of History, I am claiming that the blank plot of land between Wellovia and Katase belonged to Wellovia in 1860. This will be lost historically sometime after this RP

Vihaan snuck between some bushes, with his sister Diya just ahead of him. Their linen clothes were torn to the point of barely keeping the sun off of their bronzed skin, the bright yellows and blues of the fabric long since faded by fieldwork. Only their headbands looked somewhat maintained, a tightly woven band holding up the cloth head cover that kept the sun off their ears and neck. Both were slaves on the run, and as they were approaching adulthood, were about to be sold off by their Lord for easy money. The slave revolt two years ago killed off many of the slaves in key industries, which meant that in Isa, the price of slaves was at an all time high. It also meant that they would likely be sold to a mining company or chemical factory, as their slaves made up the bulk of the revolt. That is, if Diya wasn't purchased for another kind of work. Whether the hell ahead of them be underground, full of acidic air, or at the whims of some wealthy merchant, it didn't matter. They did the least dangerous thing they could think of, and ran.

Behind them, no doubt slave catching patrols were following their scent, using dogs and horses, but they couldn't cross into Katase, or so the siblings hoped. They knew they were somewhere close, but all mountains looked the same to them. Their only guide had been the sun and stars, surviving on what berries and roots they could find. They were nearly dead when Diya climbed over a boulder and saw smoke.

"Vihaan! Vihaan look! Smoke!"

"Did the patrols get ahead of us?"

"No, I don't think so, no look! It's a house! I think we made it!"

Vihaan finally climbed up next to his sister to get a good look.

"I think you're right. That doesn't look like any house I've seen in Isa."

At this point it didn't matter anymore, they were near death from exhaustion, malnutrition, and dehydration. They wouldn't make good slaves to be sold to market. They would either be captured, and probably killed, or die here in the wilderness. What remained of their straw sandals dragged underneath them as they stumbled to the gate, weakly pounding on the door. With no one answering, Vihaan collapsed, falling unconscious on the floor in front of the gate. Mustering up her last bit of courage, Diya shouted: "Please help, please help us! Are we in Katase?" Before falling to the ground herself.

Unknown to them, but they had made it, the only question was, would they live long enough to know.

Sauville, Abetton
January 1861

Ambassador Esmeralda Polk had dressed in her finest formal attire for a meeting with the Queen. Next to her stood her cousin, Lord General Edmure Polk, dressed in his meticulously maintained Imperial Guard uniform. And next to him was Regent Minster Paul Orval, dressed in the Abetton style of a black suit fit for a king. They had taken one of the new Armored Frigates, the IRS Resolute, around the continent and towards a friendly port in Abetton. Although now, the Regent Minister could see just how advanced the Navy of Abetton was compared to his own.

The Regent Minister knew that Esmeralda was playing politics here, but she was good at it. No doubt her cousin had helped. He had been plotting his own ideas back home, trying to find a way to capitalize on the invasion. Just a few weeks ago in December he had given a speech in the House of Nobility warning of the dangers of Abetton aggression, and that the world needed to know that Wellovia was no longer a backwater colony. He thought he had done well until the very next day, when he received a copy of the letters shared between Esmeralda and the Abetton Foreign Ministry. The Liberals had pulled a coup behind his back.

He had been preaching fear of the unknown intentions of Abetton, only to find out that the Abetton was happy to treat Wellovia as an equal, and was in favor of friendship, or even an alliance. Esmeralda's coup de grace was sending copies of the letters to the most powerful nobles and ministers. Now everyone knew Abetton's intentions were friendly, and the Regent Minister looked like he had jumped the gun, nearly leading Wellovia into an unnecessary war. The next session of the House of Nobility essentially told Regent Minister Orval to go to Abetton and become as closely allied to them as possible. Abetton was advanced, powerful, and growing. If they were to treat Wellovia as an equal, and an alliance was on the table, then it would both remove the threat of Abetton aggression, and give Wellovia prestige as an influential nation.

Now Orval would likely have to apologize to the Queen about his concern, and make peace. He gave Esmeralda a sideways glance, he would need to remember not to underestimate her in the future.

As the trio was brought to the Queen, the General and Ambassador both bowed deeply to the Queen, while the Regent Minister gave a smaller, but respectful, bow. As they were both heads of state, they were equals.

"Your Highness, it is truly a pleasure to finally meet you. Thank you for seeing me. I hope that together we can bring about great things between our nations."

SS Foxtrot Enroute to Mainland Abetton

Since departing the port the storm conditions grew worse and the good ship true was rolling in the waves but the fearless crew were sure going to keep her afloat. With the rolling waves it was often hard to see through everything, the rain, large rolling seas.

Phibeta wrote:This is HMS Creeton. As you are in Phibetan shipping lanes, we demand to inspect your ship for slaves

"Captain!" The Officer of Coms called over to his Captain at the Helm who was keeping the ship steady and into the wind. "We're being hailed by a passing ship"

"What kind of ship?"

"Some kind of war ship by the looks of her design. She's demanding we be inspected"

"Inspection, in this weather? They just fall off the banana boat? Tell them to sodder off, I've got a ship to keep afloat and a schedule to keep."

"She says we're in foreign lanes?"

"All the damn ocean is a foreign lane, especially in a storm. Tell them."

"Aye Captain." He signaled back, though nicer tone and with a large floodlight.
Unable to fulfill request. Conditions Rough. Advised keep moving.

Back in sunny Sauville the queen was enjoying her afternoon when yet another message came across her deck, this one from Phibeta, a nation that'd been certainly paying attention to Abetton's recent actions. For now it seemed as though they wanted to keep things on the observation side, that was good, Abetton wanted to keep its focus on the impending invasion of Katase. This was a formal deceleration of war made, everything by the ways and formalities of war were being observed, nothing to fear.

To His Majesty King Yohannes Warmingham,

How great it is to hear from you, Your Grace, I've read your letter and I understand we've been having disagreements but I think this is a good time to see if we can't let our cooler heads prevail and discuss things closer. Our deceleration of war is perfectly justified, you must understand but that's for another matter. We understand you want to observe and for now the best way is to agree with your request for a diplomatic emissary in Sauville. Our Foreign Minister will help set things up for you in good time. Any other matters, don't hesitate to write me back."

Queen Beatrix
Of Abetton

"Milady" Her maid announced "The Honorable Ambassadors and Regent of Wellovia to see you."

"Delightful, show them in please."

The Maid guided the group in and the Queen stood to greet them. "The pleasure is mine, thank you so much."

The door opened again as young Beatrix II was also escorted in by a maid, mostly to quietly watch a moment or two before the maids would fetch her again. For the Queen, it was important for her future heirs to see government in action and Beatrix being the oldest of her two siblings would pass her knowledge along as well. "My daughter, Princess Beatrix, named of course in my honor. My dear departed Husbands idea, personally I thought of Alicia as a cute name but well, the King's tradition must take precedent. I'm so delightful Wellovia had reached out to me, and I do want to give my own apologies for maybe being a bit fast and loose with my words of glory for our Kingdom. We do often forget this is a very large landmass beyond the mighty Griffin Mountains along our Northern border, the mighty Abetton Sea around us and of course the Sirin Mountains to our East. We only wish to take the remaining protrusion of land that is the Katase nation. We do have reason to believe the peninsula that was colonized by Goudere in the 16th Century very well could have belonged to nomadic Abetton tribes going back even earlier only to be forced away by various environmental factors. Ontop of that the sinking of the Hero by their spies and other treachery has more than justified our cause for war. But how does Wellovia feel about the conflict, support it, oppose it, maybe just indifferent? I'm eager to hear what you all have to say."

HMS Creeton. The Sugar Islands, Abetton Colony. December 1860

“Officer Webb! Any word?” Captain Winthrop shouts on deck.

“The ship has responded”. Franklin looks through a small military telescope.

“They say… They won’t stop because of the stormy weather. Which is understandable might add ma’am”.

“Damnit all!” Winthrop cursed. How are they supposed to do their job in this weather? The weather should not be an excuse for possible slave ships to getaway. The only option now is to pursue it until…

A. The conditions are favorable to board a ship in the open sea.
B. Until HMS Creeton reaches the peninsula.
C. They force the ship to dock at a nearby harbor.

Options B and C might be a little tricky since they are nowhere near friendly ports to conduct their investigation, and if they do dock in Abetton ports, they will have no jurisdiction.

“The best course of action is to pursue the ship until we have favorable weather conditions, or until we reach the peninsula and we cannot pursue them further. I am willing to chase this ship to the depths of the earth, but we are assigned to the peninsula. We’ll chase them, but only as permitted. Understand officer?”

“Aye, ma’am. Also, I reckon we use the signaling lamp too”

“That’s fine officer”. Officer Webb goes to the signalman and informs him of the message. Meanwhile, Officer Abbott approaches the captain.

“Ma’am, do you still want us to fire a warning shot?”

“No, they got the message. If they respond with a flat out no, we shall fire that warning shot and use all of our motive power to chase them”.

“Aye, ma’am”. Officer Abbott responds, running down the deck to inform the gunners. One of the sailors on board went up to the captain.

“Excuse me captain, but with all due respect, can’t we let this ship be?”

“Foreign policy dictates that any ship in our shipping lane is subject to investigation by Their Majesties’ Navy”.

“Yeah, but it’s the open seas?”

“Listen, we established a trade route between our colonial outpost of Gallagher and a few trade ports in Katase, therefore, we have jurisdiction of this shipping lane. Now get to your station! That’s an order!” the sailor does as he is told. The flagman continues to wave his arms, signaling the ship. Another sailor also used the signaling lamp.

We understand. However, we will continue to observe until weather is favorable, or until we reach the peninsula.

Port Gallagher, The Cartune Isles Colonies. December 1860

The last leg of the emissary’s voyage. From this port, just a short passage to the west coast of Abetton, he will get to the capital on land. HMS Creeton is already heading to the peninsula, so hopefully, he can get a glance at Phibeta’s first steam frigate. A marvel in naval engineering. This politician became the governor of the colonial government of the Gilligan Isles, but on the request of Their Majesties’ government, he is now going to be the first emissary to Abetton.

Mr. Theodore Hodges is one of the most skilled politicians who believe in the rights and freedoms granted to all that live in the empire. This new assignment from the government will allow him to spread the beliefs of the empire, as well as keep an open eye for the neighbors to the north of Abetton. And that is all on top of what the government tells him to.

“Oh, Theo! It’ll be lonely without you on the Gilligan Isles” says his wife, Rachel Hodges as Theodore steps on the gangplank to board the HMS Emerald, a Gem-Class gunboat.

“That’s why I have appointed you acting governor until I return. I’m sure it will be for only a few months, or perhaps years until we can officially establish an embassy. When they told me that I couldn’t bring the family for security reasons, I was on the verge of tears”. He looks at his wife and kisses her on the cheek. “I’ll send you a letter once I arrived in Sauville”.

“Good luck, dear!” Theodore walks up the gangplank to board HMS Emerald. He is greeted by Captain Jonathan Vinson, an experienced mariner who has been in the navy ever since it was legal for children to serve as cabin boys.

“Sir! It’s a pleasure to be escorting you” Captain Vinson briefs to Theodore. “We shall arrive on the west coast of Abetton in just a few days. A week at most if conditions are unbearable”.

“Excellent. I think the plan is that once we land, I shall travel on land to the capital, and establish myself as a representative of Their Majesties’ Government. And don’t you worry about little old me. I shall be escorted by two Royal Marines to protect me of course”.

“That’s good. Well, we should get going. By the way, there have been reports of slave trading, so we might have to deviate a bit and investigate slave ships”.

“Sounds excellent”. With the supplies replenished, the gunboat begins to steam and sail out of Port Gallagher. It’ll be a couple of days until they reach Abettonese ports on their west coast.

It was a bit of a pill to swallow, having to be bailed out like this, Katase welcomed the strength of friends and community but last thing it wanted was to only be the receiving end. When a great typhoon ravaged the coast, Phibeta was there to help and here they are again. A more cynical side wonders if there's a deeper ploy but what choice did he have, he took the document and signed "Your generosity is boundless that said, I want to make it clear, this may be given to us free but I still intend to repay it to your fine nation, somehow someway at some time. When this war is over, count on Katase for something, I shall hope. Mr. Ambassador, I don't know if you intend to leave right away but I do open the Palace to you or anywhere else in the city of Nadeshiko or the nation for that matter. Consider it our first gesture of thanks to you. I have released most of the staff to prepare for the eventual war we'll be fighting but I have many members of my family around who'd be delighted to help you as well. I know the times are tough and fighting will be at any moment but Kataseans won't back down we will stand our ground and fight."

The mountainous frontier of Izu, pretty sparse, quiet and home to a few thousand residents. The biggest city was Toki which sat well at the edge of the Provincial border that separated it from its neighbor. Compared to it's neighbors that sat on the Abetton-Katase side of the border, it'd been spared the raids and everything else by the near do well neighbor of Abetton, would it be spared the war? Only time would tell. The little village that sat close to the border of Wellovia was called Aichi, only a handful of residents, now even fewer with many soldiers being called up, mostly men but some women too.

The young 10-year old Ichigo Yasu walked along the dirt path leading to her family home where what to her wandering eyes she saw something? Uh what was it? It was hard to tell but it looked like a large pile of rags and cloth on the ground. Strange who would put that there, she wondered as she got closer it was apparent, it wasn't a large pile of discarded rags or clothes, it was two people?! Who were they, they didn't look like they came from here. "MAMA!" She called out running from them to find her mother. Her mother, Hotaru was busy trying to clean up, getting clothes washed, the house cleaned and everything else. Her husband was among those called up so she was left to take care of the family on her own, well mostly she had her eldest daughter, Yumiko, 13, as well, older than Ichigo but younger than her son, Kaname, who as it happened was the town doctor, well sort of, he was technically the assistant but the actual town doctor was called up to the military which left the 18-year-old Kaname to well handle the town. No pressure, kid.

"Mama mama mama!" Hotaru could hear Ichigo calling for her by the sound of her voice though she wasn't a silly girl calling out she was home, she sounded upset or worried by something.

"Ichigo!" Getting up from her soap bucket Hotaru found the teary eyed Ichigo "Ichigo, what's wrong?"

"Mama, come with me, come with me!" Her mother wanted to ask but Ichigo practically yanked on her arm to get her to follow. In the time since Ichigo ran up the path a ways to grab their mom, Yumiko too stumbled upon them, "Mama, big sister, I found these two people."

"Mama" Yumiko was just as confused as anyone else unable to say any words

"Oh my?" Hotaru saw the two strangers. "Ichigo, run to town get your brother here. Yumiko help me try to get them inside."

Ichigo ran off down the road she'd return in a while as Yumiko and Hotaru worked to get the pair inside. Raising three kids gave her enough basic understanding to treat what she could, getting a cold cloth on them seemed like a decent start. Yumiko did what she could to help her mom as they awaited their brother to return but it was likely going to be a while. "Who are they?" Yumiko had to ask her mom

"I really don't know? Maybe they came over the border?" Hotaru wondered, "Can't do much until they come to, I'm afraid."

“Your Royal Highness, though I speak as only the military attache, we thank you for your hospitality. I’m sure that the ambassador would be pleased to hear this. The ambassador had mentioned this to me, but there are no intentions of leaving Katase, at least not until the unlikely event of the capital being overrun. But I have a good feeling that won’t happen. After all, our nations are in good standing with each other. We only want what is right in the region”.

Which was half true. Of course, Phibeta wants to keep the balance of great powers in check. But since some of the weapons have been tested and never seen combat, it would also be a boost in the industrial capacity as well as find ways to improve on these weapons, but that was all in secret.

There was another reason for all of this though, and that is by divinity, to defeat the shackles of the institution that is slavery, whether it be through war, or through the circumstances that present itself. It’s of course in the core of the teachings of the Cardinal Heroes, to serve justice to those who would attack the weak, bring honor, and defend the young from tyranny. Ever since the abolition of this institution in the early 1800s, its been a duty of Phibeta to do the same everywhere.

“Your Royal Highness,” Lloyd says solemnly, “I still feel terrible that your envoy in Sauville was hanged, and his wife and other staff enslaved. And that is all without a proper trial. It pains me to see such a practice from civilized nations like ourselves. Any nation that practices the institution of slavery is barbaric. Phibeta might be neutral in all this for now, but I am certain that our people will be supporting you in many ways. In fact, if your willing, I can show you one of the pieces of equipment that just came in which I think could change the tide of the war, not listed on the document for secrecy reasons of course. I am sure the ambassador would like to meet with you as well”.

"Why yes, a mutual defense pact, that is a fine idea, I must agree! Truly I think Wellovia and Abetton are very like minded and I suspect together this entire landmass we can share the glory between us. For your requests, that's doable. We can return any fugitive slaves upon our capture of the nation which as we speak is undergoing the final preparations, we should be ready to launch within a year even. Then I believe we are in full understanding of that. Delightful! Any other matters to discuss? You have come an awfully long way I'd hate to have this wrapped up so quickly. Perhaps further matters of trade?"

Phibeta wrote:HMS Creeton.

SS Foxtrot Enroute to Mainland Abetton

Keeping a watchful eye to the horizon where the light originated, The Officer found a response "Captain, they intend to follow us further"

"Let them." The Captain gruffed off, it was little concern, soon enough they'd be out of the storm and back in Abetton.

"Just a moment." Emerging from the Captain's Bunk just off the bridge, Ceecee hearing everything. "They want to follow us then let them but we'll do it on our terms. I'm sure it's some morally righteous abolitionist again!"

"Ma'am...?"

"We'll have them follow us, but if their concern is we're in their shipping lanes and we're carrying our rightfully earned cargo, then we shall not give them a reason to inspect us. We'll turn into the full fury of the storm and head straight for Sauville instead of Port Serenity."

"My dear," Her husband objected "I love your fearless bold spirit but Sauville is another leg in of itself and in a storm like this.."

"We've faced plenty bad like this and well what's an extra day or two on the sea, we have more than enough fuel to make the trip. The danger is no worse than anything else. So let's turn our heading, Officer Paddock, Swing us hard to starboard 55 degrees."

"Aye Ma'am."

Cutting off any further protest from "It's my turn at the helm, darling. Time for you to rest. Can't go against the law now can we?"

He knew when to stand down from his wife, she was a lovely but kind of scary woman at times. "Let the fools follow us into the beast of the storm. These waters are our domain, Tempra and Juna will be calling the shots now. And to cross them is certain death."

HMS Creeton. Out at sea. December 1860

“It seems,” Officer Franklin Webb says to the captain looking through the telescope, “that they aren’t saying anything else. They probably would want us to chase them until they can’t be chased any longer”. Captain Winthrop studies the ship in question. She was more positive it was a slave ship from Abetton. A quick thought emerged in her head.

“Webb, get the chief engineer. I want to quickly chat with him”.

“Yes ma’am”. Officer Webb went down into the boiler room of the ship, bringing back Chief Engineer Fredrich Friggates onto the deck.

“Fredrich, how much coal do we have in our reserves?”

“Right now, we have more than enough to carry us into the peninsula. If we wanted to go faster, then we have enough for that as well”. Octavia has her eyes on that merchant ship ahead again.

“Excellent. Tell your crew to pump every ounce of steam you can give me. We are currently traveling at 6 knots, but this steamer is capable of 8… No, 10 knots! I want to get closer to that ship and continue to patrol those Abetton slave merchants”.

“We’ll give it all we can ma’am, we also need to be careful too. This storm seems it won’t let off, and we also don’t want to overheat the boilers”

“Just do whatever you need to do”. Fredrich returns to the boiler room, where the crew began to shovel coal into the fire. Slowly and surely, the ship picks up speed. The journalist frantically writes down incredible stories of the heroism of these sailors out on these dangerous waters. The ship not used to these speeds in these conditions began rocking a bit more than usual, but all of that is swept aside with the determination of the captain to chase down this supposed slave ship that wouldn’t stop for inspections (Although the weather sort of makes it understandable). In her thoughts, the captain was pleased to alsmot catch up with the merchant ship. She will show them that even in a shipping lane, Phitannia rules the seas.

20 Upton Street. Weston, Phibeta. December 1860

Lunchtime at 20 Upton. Louis Partaridge was about to have his luncheon fix of an exotic dish from the Phibetan Raj of Xofrautan, of which The Sibling Monarchs were made emperors and empress of the land. This dish is called curry. A dish made with various spices, cooked in a stew and blended with meat (today with mutton) and served with potatoes and this new grainy side dish called rice. Being a subject and servant of the Phibetan empire, it is only fair that he tries the delicacies of the far-off regions, especially since he has heard that the monarchs themselves enjoyed curry once and a while. In fact, he has heard that they plan on hiring a Xofrautanese chef in the royal kitchen. For pudding, it was familiar fare with some small jam tarts, all with some claret wine. Before he could tuck into his lunch, he heard a knock at the door.

“Come in!” he shouts. The door opened with one of the conservative MPs, Mr. Sidney Morris, entering the dining room.

“Prime Minister, I have a letter from Their Majesties”. He gives Louis the letter in question.

“Thank you, Mr. Morris” He replies. He opens the letter, reading its content. He smiles, feeling accomplished for himself. “It seems that the emissary has been accepted by Her Majesty over in Abetton. We shall see Mr. Hodges over there. I’ll send a letter to Their Majesties to give thanks”.

“Begging your pardon Prime Minister. I thought you followed party lines. This idea of peace seems to not fall in that. Are you alright?”

“Oh! Of course, I am. This is all a part of my grand plan”.

“Plan?”. Of course, there was a plan. It seemed sinister but like many Conservative Warhawks in parliament, they express interest in going to war, but ever since the Isolota Wars and the idea of regional peace by the Liberal Party (not to mention years of Liberal Rule since 1816) it was about time to perpetrate Phibeta’s true calling.

“You see, with Abetton imperialism is a threat to our own. Not to mention that Abetton slavery, especially among their children is disgusting. So, what I have planned is to send one of our emissaries over to Abetton, and if he gets attacked, that would immediately rally the people, when they see their fellow countryman in danger, either in slavery or death, to call parliament and Their Majesties to declare war on those Abetton barbarians”.

“I see, so it’s the standard “send someone to screw with” routine. Oh by the way, have you seen the papers?”. Sidney provides Louis with a copy of The Weston Mail, which has stated that the steam frigate HMS Creeton has been sent to the Abetton-Katase peninsula to protect Phibetan interests and to observe the war. Louis smirked sinisterly. The stakes have upped this time.

“Ah! Even more perfect! Abetton wouldn’t be too foolish to blow up our naval ship. Let me tell you, if Abetton raises hell over their vessel, so will we”.

“Sir?”

“Listen, I would bet every last pound that Abetton, try as they might to keep us out, will try to either butter us up to join their side, or to declare war on us. If we keep a warship in their peninsula, we can remind them that if they mess with one gunboat, they mess with the entire fleet. And if they mess with our allies, they tread on dangerous waters in the face of Phibeta and her loyal colonies”.

“You are all over the place Prime Minister”. Louis chuckled.

“Is it so? I intend on peace, no doubt about it. But war is good for general morale. We need to show the world not to mess with the Phibetan Empire. Speaking of, my luncheon is about to go cold. If there is nothing else, I must return to my lunch. Good day sir”.

“Of course sir. Nothing else at all”. Mr. Morris leaves the house, while Louis tucks into his lunch. The curry was a nice flavor, a bit spicy, but more favorable than his regular pastrami sandwiches. He wonders if this should make for a great national dish, even though it came from a land far from Phibeta.

The Royal Palace. Sauville, Abetton. December 1860

Mr. Hodges arrives at the palace, it was a long trip from Gallagher to a west coast port in Abetton, and finally a carriage ride to Sauville. He has previously checked into a hotel, and now he is here. His goal is to both represent Phibeta in this part of the world, as well as assert Phibetan policy on its shipping lanes. For today however, he is here to present his Letter of Credence to Her Majesty, which lists his experience and appointments.

Once he arrived, the doors for the palace open, and is greeted by the Lord Chamberlain of the palace.

“Good morning sir. I am an emissary from Phibeta. If Her Majesty isn’t busy. I would like to present to Her Majesty, my letter of Credence from Their Majesties, as tradition dictates of course”.

“Be rest assured, Your Royal Highness. We will help your people as much as we can with the extent of our neutrality. But I am sure we will be joining this little war soon. From what I have heard, members of parliament back home wish to declare war on Abetton for the continuation of slavery and slave trading on Phibetan shipping lanes, and for slapping our honor. Seeing the determination of your people, and the atrocities committed by the Abettons, support for war might be fevered in parliament and the general public”. General Beton stood up.

The Royal Palace. Sauville, Abetton. January 1861

"I would absolutely enjoy a chance to discuss opening up further trade. As we will be sharing a border soon, it may be in our interests to discuss what we want to happen along it.

I must admit that this is my first time in Sauville, even as a boy I never ventured this far west. I would love to see the city, tour your factories, see your ships and soldiers, and learn more about your people. I have no urgent need to return to Goldenberg, so I would be happy to spend a week or two learning about your country. This place is beautiful.

Somewhere along the Katase-Wellovian border
December 1860

Diya felt the pounding headache first, a loud pulsing ring of pain crushing the inside of her skull, pulling her back to the real world. She tried to raise an arm to her head, but her arms were heavy. As if realizing she was finally awake, her legs began to scream with pain, as though the adrenaline had finally worn off and all the damage she had done to them was finally able to make itself known. She tried to call out, but only a whimper made it out. She was laying down on something. Something else was on her head, it was cooler than it ought to be. Finally one hand found the strength to reach her head and felt the coarse fabric of a cloth on her face. She still didn't want to open her eyes, but it was becoming clear they were somewhere…

THE HOUSE! DID VIHAAN GET THEM IN?

She tried to sit up but her body protested, it was still recovering from the escape. She ignored the pain and tried to speak, his time managing to get words out: "Vihaan? where are we?"

Unknown to her, but Vihaan was nearby, still recovering, unconscious but breathing. Upon hearing his sister's voice, something in him started to wake up. His body protested, demanding rest after their run through the mountains, but she was his sister. Staying unconscious, his hand began to twitch, reaching out for her while he continued to rest.

SS Foxtrot

Over the waves, through the pounding rain the ship pushed on, with their fearless First Officer at the helm; fearless or reckless? Maybe both? Adjusting the wheel to ride the waves ideally rather than let the waves ride them, not that that was simple in such conditions as these. "Captain" The lookout adjacent to her called peering through her binoculars, "It seems we're still being followed."

"What? Are they crazy, or just plain stupid?"

"Looks like they're plowing along full steam."

"Ugh, fine then, let them follow, once we're in Sauville, all will be fine. No matter what, we don't stop until we reach Abetton waters"

"Aye ma'am" The bridge crew responded. Meanwhile though, there was more trouble brewing besides a nasty sea storm, as some nautical miles ahead, was a little unassuming schooner, cutting westward to try and get out of the storm. Who'd it run into first would remain to be seen but this was making an already bad situation worse.

Sauville, December 1860

To greet the lord was the Castle Butler along with a few maids. "Yes, of course. Welcome to Castle Sauville, Your Honor." He nodded taking the letter "Her Highness is ready to see you, please come along with me." He guided them down the various castle halls. Yet again the maids also attending to the Children walked the same hall. "Oh may I introduce her Royal Highnesses and His Royal Highness, Princess Beatrix II, Princess Viola and of course, Crowned Prince Hero."

"Mister Howell" Young Beatrix addressed him with a smile, "That'll be all from you for now. Allow me to escort our guests to Mother."

"As you wish, Milady, if you be needing further assistance you know to call upon us." He bowed for her "Please sir, follow me if you will." She continued leading him along the winding castle halls, past portraits of old Monarchs and other members of the families of old, other great figures of Abetton History all the way up to the large door of the Great Hall where the Queen was awaiting. Opening the heavy wood door, "Mother, we have a guest in our Castle from Phbeta." Beatrix joined her mother at her side as the Queen mother stood to welcome their new arrival. "Your Honor, welcome. I've been expecting at some point to receive word from Phibeta, what word you bring me today?"

"Ah delightful, I'm glad we can consider the future. If there's no great rush, then take some time to see the city and at your leisure our factories. After all, what better way to see what will be best for the great Wellovian people than to see what the great Abetton industry has to offer first? Then, join us for dinner. I shall look forward to seeing you tonight then. Mr. Howell?" She called for the attention of the Butler whom had been standing in the room ready to be at beck and call. "Yes, Your Highness?"

"If you'd please have Miss Louise and Mister Strom at the Stables prepare our guests for a trip around Sauville for our guests."

"As you Wish. Sir, Madam, would you walk this way please?"

"Delightful, my two stable heads will prepare your ride and tour."

HMS Creeton. Out at sea. December 1860

The engine pounds on the ship, doing its best to pick up speed, and it was. Captain Winthrop looks through the telescope, seeing the little merchant ship getting closer insight.

“Haha!” says Captain Octavia with a smirk. “I got you in my sights now! All we got to do now is force them off course, get out of this blasted storm, and inspect their vessel for slaves. The perfect plan”. HMS Creeton was getting close to her target, but as things were about to go their way, another obstacle stands in their way.

“Ma’am,” First Lieutenant Bradley says, in a worrying manner. “I think there is another ship on our path”.

“You sure you aren’t just looking at that merchant ship?”

“Ma’am, with all due respect, I wouldn’t be bringing it up unless I am sure that there is another vessel out at sea”. Captain Winthrop takes her telescope off of the merchant ship, and on a schooner that was coming straight for them. That’s no good! If they get close to that damned schooner, they are going to ram her (most likely), and they might be getting out unscathed, but unless that schooner is also iron-hulled, they are going to be rammed into. Worse case, they too will sink. Octavia sighs heavily. Scenarios like this call for quick action.

“It’ll be too reckless to keep steaming, but we need to keep our speed. Officer Webb!” She shouts.

“Yes ma’am?”

“Go down to the chief engineer and tell him to slow the engines down. Not too much though, we want to maintain our distance with the merchant ship, and make sure to get the signalers to contact the schooner and tell them to get out of the way”.

“Yes, ma’am”. Officer Webb starts giving out the orders to the signalers before heading down to the engine room. The smoke starts becoming less thick as the ship slows a little, maintaining slower speeds and keeping the merchant ship close. She turns her attention to the first lieutenant.

“Bradley. Have the crew prepare lifeboats. We might not be able to avoid the schooner, and might sink in the process. IT’s only a precaution though”.

“Yes, ma’am”. The crew begins to prepare lifeboats when all else fails. This is not ideal weather to be in a maritime accident. But it couldn’t be helped. The lamp signaler and flagman signal to the schooner frantically to get them to turn, so they can continue their pursuit.

Get out of the way! Get out of the way! Speeding along! Be advised, we are turning starboard side, your port side!

XX Dec 1860

On behalf of the government in The Grand Kingdom of Phibeta, the undersigned, King Yohannes II, King William IV, and Queen Diane do hereby appoint,

Theodore Hodges, Governor of The Gilligan Isles,

to represent the Government of Phibeta as the emissary to the Kingdom of Abetton, at the leisure of either Their Majesties or Her Majesty.

The said representative is fully authorized to take part in the meeting, to transact all such matters as
may pertain to its work on behalf of Their Majesties.

We have considered the character of Mr. Hodges, a stern but fair one, as the governor of our colony of the Gilligan Isles. Under him, the colony prospered. A champion of law and order, and a well worded politician, who we believe in these times of tense relations, is suitable to speak on behalf of our interests.

In witness whereof, We, King Yohannes, King William IV, and Queen Diane, have signed this Letter of Credentials and have affixed
hereto our official seal.

King Yohannes II, King William IV, Queen Diane. House of Waringham of the Grand Kingdom of Phibeta

“I hope, that at this time, we can come to some understanding with between our peoples and our interests in the region”.

“Now, about this new piece of military equipment we got. Why not come by to the docks where we will unload this new weapon. The ambassador will be down there to oversee some unloading operations, and he would be pleased to see you”.

"I understand." He stood up again nodding in a firm approval. "Your nation's own honor has to be maintained and we can't ask you to compromise that.

Yumiko had been asked to keep an eye on the sleeping pair as their mother continued to make both sense of the situation and use of the time by preparing food for them to eat if they could and while she awaited her son to come. Spotting at least one of them was awake she darted from the corner to Diya's side "Easy easy." She spoke not even knowing if she could understand her. She offered up the little bowl of fresh water if she wanted. Pointing at herself, she said "Yumiko." Because at this point what else can she say to them. Rural village like this, not much use to learn a foreign language so she honestly didn't know anything. "Mama!" She called out for her mother to hopefully come in quickly, all the while she still offered up the bowl of water.

“It’ll be my pleasure, Your Royal Highness”. The general proceeded to escort the Grand Prince down to the dockyards on the horse and carriage he came on earlier. The Phibetan merchant ship was well guarded by the few merchant mariners that were also naval reserves. Down by the docks were a few crates, which were classified as clothing, machinery, and food supplies. While most of the contents were true to form, they were also misleading to some of the crates, which secretly held military equipment. One of this military equipment was already assembled. A new kind of military weapon has the shape of a small artillery gun. But looks could be deceiving.

The two arrived at the docks. There, the Phibetan ambassador, Sir Simon Scott, was looking over the shipment of the supplies and the reassembly of the new weapon. He turns over to see the military attache and the Grand Prince, coming out of the carriage.

“Your Royal Highness,” Sir Scott says, bowing to him. “It is an honor to be in your presence again. Their Majesties hope you are well, but I assume General Benton told you that already. He probably also told you about the new weapon we have developed” he finishes looking over at the weapon with that appeared like a small artillery gun.

"Mother, the Honorable Governor Hodges is herby appointed to discuss matters between us and the Phibetan Kingdom on behalf of their king, William IV and Queen Diane. In witness, King Yohannes."

"Thank you, dear." She said as Beatrix handed over the letter to her. "Phibeta sounds concerned about something as I understand. The papers have certainly been reporting that your government has taken quite the interest in our recent military buildup. My question would be what concern is it of His and Her Royal Highnesses of your Kingdom about our activity." She nodded over to one of the attendants standing who laid out a large world map. "Our continent is the last great stretch with a vast turbulent ocean beyond. Seemingly endless we might think so centuries back. Oh I know the sentiment that must be echoing in your hallowed halls, Abetton has been graced by all the Heavens to have large swaths of land already. Well that's just the thing, the land here is so vast. You know it was but a couple of centuries ago Abetton wasn't even the Kingdom you see here. Just a loose collection of tribes and villages that dotted this place. The tall mountains you see outside the window, the green plains, the marshlands along the southern coasts. Increasingly we've collected into a Divinely written kingdom. I mean how else can it be so when so much works against us as a people?"

Out to Sea

Waves so high you'd think you were sailing right into a mountainside! Rain so fierce you'd think you were under waterfall. All the Foxtrot needed as to make it to port of Sauville, so there could be little dispute they were in their rightful territory of Abetton. The ships holding their own for now but on a dangerous collision course with another ship. Aboard, her fearless captain kept sturdy while her lookouts kept eyes on their ship tailing. "Captain, they seem to be slowing"

"Aha, of course they are! Nobody can fight off a massive storm in the Abetton Sea! We'll maintain our rate of speed."

"Captain, surely we can afford to bleed off?"

"Nonsense. It's some moral crusader abolitionist blockade runner, I just know it. Our property is ours to hold and take, no exceptions."

"Yes, Captain."

Unfortunately for the little schooner it was unable to see the signals over the massive waves any flashing glimpses were simply ruled out as lightning or mirages playing tricks on the captain. This schooner was Abetton born but not iron hulled, not even powered by the magnificence of steam, just the wind and currents that could carry her. A full load of passengers and cargo of her own, not slaves in this case just coffee, tea and sugarcane, it wasn't long before she felt the impact of the Foxtrot cutting through her stern!

Aboard the Foxtrot everyone felt the shutter as the two ships made contact. "We're hit!"

"All stop!"

"All stop!"

"What did we hit another ship?"

"Aye Captain, we have!"

"Blasted all, in such weather. We have no choice now, get all men and get ready to rescue who we can, if the sea doesn't swallow up anyone first."

It was codified into Abetton Maritime Law, ships were mandated to assist if able, conditions weren't great for that but they had to do it.

Castle Sauville. Sauville, Abetton. December 1860

Theodore listens to what her majesty has to say. Looking outside of the window of the castle and of the map of the continent, it was obvious that there was a dream of having the entirety of Meridional all to themselves. Graced by all the heavens they say? Surely, if the heavens did intend on that, then why have they blessed Katase with the lands to share with on this continent?

“That may as well be your majesty, with all due respect,” Mr. Hodges starts solemnly. “But I don’t see why this cannot be obtained through diplomatic unity? The problem that Their Majesties see is the growing concerns of the conquest of the region. We ourselves have an overseas empire too, mostly consisting of colonization of empty lands throughout the region and the far lands beyond the oceans, but we uphold the rights of self-determination for any nation, regardless of status in the world. We recognize Katase as a sovereign nation and as such, treat them with the highest respect. They are great trading partners, so I do not see why this can not be achieved. I am sure you well remember the horrible Isotola Wars of the 1790s. One power-hungry emperor trying to conquer the surrounding islands and continents of the Greater Dienstad. A costly war that cost many lives. We do not want another repeat of such a devastating war”. Though a proud supporter of the Conservative idea of just war himself (given that he was a former member of the Duke of Riderton’s Grenadiers), he knew of the families of the soldiers who never saw their husbands, sons, or daughters ever again. He sighs heavily.

“Now, Their Majesties are all for a united continent between the two powers. If You wish to unite Abetton and Katase with a compromise and an act of union, we will be all for it. The main issue is the upsetting of the balance of powers set by the Concert of Greater Dienstad. Especially with the controversial question of the day”. He sits down on a chair. Looking at the young princess.

“Pardon me for breaking the atmosphere Your Majesty, but you have such wonderful children when I step foot on the palace grounds,” he says to Queen Beatrix. “All behaved well, all happy children. I couldn’t say the same for other children who are subjected to the institution of slavery. I may be speaking from a nation that has since outlawed the practice since 1833, but I can say proudly that under no circumstances are the life of a being is worth monetary value. Especially children in Katase, The island chains of the South Seas, which I have been hearing reports of in the region. And under serfdom laws here in Abetton. Forgive me for being out of line Your Majesty, for being so blunt. But I am sure your children wouldn’t want to be in that situation either. Starved, wearing old rags, having to work from dawn to dusk for a lord who could sell them at any moment?”

HMS Creeton. Out at sea. December 1860

A loud scraping can be heard at sea over the wind and rain. But it wasn’t on the HMS Creeton, the slave ship that they have been chasing has scrapped the schooner that was heading in the opposite direction.

“ALL STOP!!” shouts Captain Winthrop. The frigate beings its gradual slowing down, as it was already doing. It stopped six feet of the foremast of the bow hitting the schooner as well. This weather sometimes could be cruel.

“The schooner must have struck that merchant ship,” says First Lieutenant Bradley. “It seems that passengers are on board”.

“That could have been us with that ship. I don’t know what worse could have happened”. Octavia sighs. But smirks in delight. Not at the maritime disaster that laid before them, but the situation itself. Not only can they aid in such a rescue mission, but there was an excuse to inspect the merchant ship for slaves. Octavia clears her throat

“It is our naval policy to help all passing ships within our shipping lanes, or anywhere in the open seas. Bradley,” she states to her First Lieutenant, please send lifeboats down to the schooner and rescue anyone on that ship, and ask Major Tyler Lane to have the Royal Marines send down ropes to pull any peoples overboard”.

“Yes, ma’am”. Connie leaves to tell the crew to launch lifeboats to carry out their current rescue orders. Royal Marines throw ropes for anyone to grab on to, and will be pulled out of the treacherous waters. Captain Winthrop turns to Officer Eric Abbott.

“Officer Abbott. Once the situation clears up. Grab a few marines and sailors. I intend to board that merchant ship at the right moment. That’ll teach them to try and run away from the force of Phibeta”.

“Yes, ma’am”. Officer Abbott remains on standby, helping to launch lifeboats. All sailors were at work in the terrible weather, Captain Winthrop continues to look, waiting for the write time to board the ship. Perhaps later once everything settles down.

"Katase as far as we're concerned is an illigiamite puppet state. The lands are historically composed of old nomadic tribes that presently make up the Abetton Kingdom's people. Katase was once a colony of the old Marumochi Kingdom, a kingdom that has long fell into the obscurity of history. Barbarians they are began forcing our people out of the lands and further into the grasslands of the central plains that we occupy now. The land is a Princely state without a monarch to answer to? How can they claim sovereignty when they have no sovereign to answer to? They know this to be true which is why their spies sabotaged our great naval ship The Hero. A ship that saw battle and combat and won us the southern islands!" she gave him the next moment to speak, the issue of slavery arose, "So abolition it is then, you seek? If your nation feels you have no need for the serfs than so be it however, Abetton being as large and sprawling as it is, on top of a quickly growing population requires much in the way of manual labor. My children are of the fine nobility, divinely ordained by the Gods and Goddesses of all Heavens. Others are born to serve and work, be it adult or child. It's the order of this universe. Just as the planets revolve around the sun there is an order to everything and the order says that the Gods set our value and position in life. And our slaves are hardly starving. What good would they be if they were deprived of what it takes for them to work. the Phibeta kingdom wants to introduce nonsense of egaltarianisim then let it, it will only lead to ruin in the end. There are those born to rule and born to serve."

Out to Sea

Seas were bad but it was growing evident that maybe conditions were starting to let up a little, the wind wasn't as punishing and the rain not as heavy but it still was a heavy effort to pull survivors out of the water. Those who were deceased, namely the crew at the bridge and bow were unfortunately lost to the seas. The stern section of the schooner, which was mostly composed up of women and children, had better luck with survivors, people largely of Abetton's higher class but still hardly what they bargained for on a trip like this. "Hurry now, everyone aboard!"

"Yes Captain"

"Any time now that nosy ship that's been chasing us will be on us. Last thing I need is to have some moral crusaders take my payday away."
