The Argentine-American War(IC, Cold War, OPEN TO ALL)

Postby Peroniist Argentina » Sat Jul 03, 2021 10:20 am

May 29th, 1958
The Falkland Islands

Argentine General Teodoro Aguirre raised a pair of weathered binoculars to his eyes, gazing out upon the ocean blue. He adjusted the sights slowly, focusing on a numerous amount of grey silhouettes on the horizon. After a few agonizing seconds, the silhouettes took the shape of American battleships. Their massive turrets were at their normal resting position and he could not see any crew milling about on the decks. General Aguirre lowered the binoculars and handed them back to his second-in-command. The General could hear sharp cracks of rifles and the occasional machine gun burst off in the distance. The Americans were desperately trying to push inland but the Argentine commandoes were managing to put up stiff resistance. Only the first line of the 5 defense lines(the worst of the defenses, in Aguirre's opinion) had been captured, although the Argentine infantry had taken serious losses, losses that Aguirre could not afford at the moment. The only other positive that the General could see was that the Argentine submarine attacks had made the US navy wary of getting too close to the Falklands. A barely audible sigh escaped his mouth. For now, the Falkland defenders would be forced to fight a defensive battle against their American foe.

Unknown location within the Argentine-controlled Chilean provinces
A man stared out onto the sun setting on the waves of the sea, gritting his teeth in frustration. He had been promised that the supplies would be here by now. They had been low for two weeks and he feared he'd run out of ammunition in the next few days. He cursed under his breath and checked his silver pocket watch again. A few rebels he had brought with him milled about aimlessly. They were bored out of their minds and were probably angry at their commander for making them wait so long. Suddenly, the man's radio crackled to life.
"Augusto, has any of the shipments arrived?" Asked his commander
There was a brief moment of silence before Augusto responded with "They haven't arrived yet, sir, but I'm sure they'll be here soon."
"They better be there soon. The Argentine front is being very quiet right now. I think they're going to try something soon. If the supplies aren't there within ten minutes, we'll cut our losses and figure out what to do from there. Out." The radio went back to being silent. Augusto looked up at the churning ocean silently praying that the much need ammunition and food would arrive soon.

theme
Kapitän zur See Otto Kretschmer, the ace of the aces of the German submariners (OOC note: this is a real person and if you have a problem with me using him here as my character give me a word and I’ll replace him in no time) was more than pleased when offered command of the fresh, just finished tests Type XXIXI attack submarine. As one of the highest ranking officers in Kriegsmarine, he had heard a lot of rumors about the capabilities and the specifications of the class, such as that it could stay underwater for an infinite amount of time, the fact that the submarine could reach speeds up to 50 knots when submerged- some rumors seemed to be true from the few documents he was allowed to see about the type, some seemed more as an overexageration. Neither the less, he knew what that assignment also meant…

Several days later, he was staying atop the podium at Bismarckbucht submarine base, with the crews of the submarines that will go under his command staying in front of him, awaiting his speech, coughing up a bit, he spoke up in a powerful, strong voice:
-Officers and sailors! I suppose, most of you have had served with the Kriegsmarine in the Second Weltkrieg. You’ve heard and felt the explosions of the dive bombs, knew, how it feels to be under attack. All of you know, that I’m not a big fan of long political speeches, as well as trying to justify the actions, however, allow me to tell you that in the mission our Vaterland had tasked us with today, we will have our revenge for our honorable and brave comrades, sunk by the Amerikans. I ask you to perform at the top of your ability, ask not in the name of our Kaiserine, not in the name of The Fuhrer, but in the name of the fallen, who still remain unavenged. The Amerikans believe that their ships are unrivaled on the seas, they believe that there is no force that can fight them. I won’t say that they’re weak, for what glory can one find in fighting a weak enemy, however I can say that they’re overconfident in themselves. Your boats are more than a worthy opponent to theirs, however, you also have something more, crucial to the victory. You have the Will to Fight, strengthened by your nation, your comrades and your families back home. Let’s make them proud and show the Amerikans, that the German U-Boat is still a force to be reckoned with! Got Mitt Uns!

The fleet, commanded by Vizeadmrial Kurt Dobratz (also a real person), makes its way from Laka under the cover of the night, traveling most of the way into the open sea submerged- U-500 Type XXIXI nuclear sub doesn’t even need to surface, and the three accompanying Type-XXII‘s can snorkel their way around mostly undetected. That being said, the submarines when surfaced travel substantially harder, which the subs will do, when in the open ocean and undetected. Once they enter the area where the presence of US patrol planes is expected, they will dive and remain underwater for the most of the time, retreating north way to surface if needed. For now, the submarines have to stay undetected, reveling they position and existence will be disastrous. They await the intel from the Argentinians, routes of enemy patrol planes, the consistence of the enemy fleet and, even more useful, the general layout of the fleet.

Undisclosed Location near the Malvinas Islands, Southern Atlantic Ocean
Unfortunately, due to incompetence on the Argentinean part, the Argentine submarines found themselves surfacing roughly 7 miles off from the planned rendezvous point, but well out of the way of the American patrols. This gave the CO of the small task force, Captain Gusto Vera, with two dilemmas. He sat in his small commander’s chair with a grim expression. He could have his fleet run a risk, cut through the American destroyers and naval bombers in an attempt to reach the point. This was the riskiest option. He had to maintain radio discipline for all of this operation. The six Argentine submarines would also have to space themselves out in order to leave as little of a trail as possible.
The second option was much simpler. He could cut his losses and return to their naval base in the Malvinas. This would likely condemn their allies to be discovered and destroyed, but the Argentineans would live to fight another day. Much to the condemnation of his junior officers and enlisted, Captain Vera decided to leave his allies in the hands of fate. Waves broke over the hulls of the Submarines as they quietly slipped back under the water. Much to both his annoyance and anger, one submarine broke off from the formation and began making a beeline to the rendezvous. The commander of the rogue submarine, Lieutenant Guzmán, sat in a solemn silence as his men rushed desperately to their battle-stations. He knew that his actions would likely result in a Court Martial and maybe a death penalty. But to him, preserving Argentina by saving her allies was worth whatever may happen to him next.

-Now, where the hell are these Argentinians?! We’ve been sitting in this place pond for the past 17 hours and they’re nowhere to be seen! What’s even worse- we’ve been picking up radar signals from the enemy fleet- they (i believe) know that something is happening here, although they don’t exactly know neither where we are, neither what we’re up to…- Kreshmer was getting more and more nervous with each second his submarine stayed surfaced,- we’re sitting ducks in here! Vizeadmiral, we have to turn to Argentine- otherwise me and my men will not be able to fulfill their duties!
-I appreciate your advice, zür See, however, we will stay here for all the necessary amount of time. I have my orders to await the allied ships in this area,- and violating this orders will bring undesirable consequences of matter and…- Dobratz was unable to finish his sentence as he was unterrupted by a very frightened voice of the sonar operator: “Contact, submarine, bearing 321, speed 10 knots…”
-Bring us to the safe depth and notify the rest of the fleet do do so! Acoustic, type of the contact?
-I think it’s something very, very old…- while the acoustic officer, who at the time served aboard the world renown U-96, had surely heard a lot of submarines, he had an incredibly hard time identifying the sub,- sounds somewhat like an old Type VII… I think it’s definitely not British or American because they don’t use such old things…- he was quickly flipping through the pages of Jane’s, before stopping his hand on the picture of a not-so-indimidating-looking sub,- THIS! Type Santa-Fe ARA sub, advancing on our position at periscope depth.
-Let me get a listen…- Kreshmer listened to the sound of the submarine’s old Diesel engine working, and gave his judgment,- Whatever this “genius” is doing here one thing is certain: taking into consideration that his engine is literally screaming our loudly, I can safely state now half of the world knows that he is here and soon, we’re going to see some very unhappy Englishmen or Yankees converge on our position.
-Signal him to follow us, we’re getting out of here, order the rest of the submarines to retreat to argenti…- Vizeadmiral was interrupted again, this time by a flak periscope operator:
-Aircraft! Bearing 127, distance 5 km, type: Shackleton! Approachin on the position of the allied sub!
-Well, Sheiße…
The approaching Shackleton didn’t even bother to circle around and drop additional sonar buoys to determine the exact position of an old Santa-Fe class,- so loud it was that the plane’s sonar operator had deduced the range without a need for complex operations. However, what he didn’t count into account were Lakan subs, all of which still carried, maybe as a left-over from a bygone era, flak cannons. When it had gone in for a depth charge run, the plane’s crew had suddenly noticed that another sub had surfaced, a bit too off-course to be attacked on this run, however even more unusual was that the moment after the sub had surfaced it began firing a flak cannon at Shackleton, which they were completely unprepared for- a Santa-Fe class did not carry a flak cannon and, according to their info, neither did any of the U-Boats in the ARA had the ability to open fire immediately after surfacing. Due to the surprise effect, as well as an installation of a tracking computer, the flak had hit the Shackleton, damaging one of the engines and piercing through one of the fuel tanks, forcing it to loose some fuel before it had sealed. This made the plane to abandon it’s attack run and turn towards friendly units- the already stripped on fuel patrol plane had now to save every minute it can in order to have a chance at returning to base, however, it did send out the coordinates of the submarines to the allied forces, and was even able to receive a message from the mysterious U-Boat, with the person on the other side swearing at the “Arschloch brit Schwachkopf” in a wild mixture of English and German words. The attacking sub was the U-404, commanded by Zora Oberhauser, Lakan first female U-Boat captain, renown for her bravery and willingness to follow orders, coupled with borderline stupidity.
Knowing that this Shackleton’s call will attacks P2U’s, other Shackleton’s or, even worse, enemy surface combatants, Dobratz had immediately began to move his fleet, as well as allied Santa-Fe north-east, away from the enemy fleet, often changing course and rigging the ships for ultra quiet whenever any sort of danger will arrive. He knew that the brave Santa-Fe had little to no chance of getting away- the time the ARA sub had to stay underwater was extremely limited and, unlike the Lakan subs, it couldn’t hide underwater during nighttime, but had to stay surfaced most of the time. As such he took some of the crew members from the submarine aboard, citing “You will be of better use here rather than sitting at the sea bottom in your sub…” Effectively it was but a sitting duck just waiting for the hunter to arrive.

Lieutenant Guzmán stood on the deck of the sub as his men departed. He knew it was a suicide run from the get-go, but getting the information to his allies outweighed the risk of death. His crew passed by as they departed their sub, saluting Guzmán and uttering “For Argentina” as they went.
The young Lieutenant nodded to his Lakan counterpart, Dobratz, as the last group left the submarine. He had passed the vital information to the highest enlisted man, Sergeant Jorge Alvarado, to give to the Lakan fleet. The Santa-Fe submarine and what remained of hed crew slid into the sea and turned back to link up with a detachment of Argentinean civilian vessels to the South-East of their position. There was no guarantee that the understaffed Santa-Fe would make it, but if they stayed with their allied submarines, they risked exposing them.

The Falklands/Malvinas
As the sun faded from the sky, the Argentine forces began preparations to consolidate their forces at three of the primary defensive fortifications, abandoning one to the British and American forces. Reports indicated that the Americans were going to launch another invasion on the opposite side of the islands in an attempt to surround and cut off the Argentine Garrison there.

-The story of your bravery and honor, kamerad, will live for ages! Your selfless run to us truly proves the worthiness of your people’s fight! Best of luck, Guzmán!- Dobratz had truly known that he was leaving a man that, should he live to tell the tale, might become a submarine ace, rivaling Kreshmer or even, who knows, Arnauld de la Perière. For a man, having so much bravery is a man who’s lacking just the skills and the equipment. Before parting ways with the Santa Fe, Lakan submarines salute their bravery with a small barrage of flak cannon fire. U-404 requests to help escort the sub, but is denied- their duty to the Argentinians and the Vaterland outweighs their duty to the Guzmán.

Making their way out of the enemy hunter-killer groups operations area, the submarines turn southbound and, after some time, pick up what the acoustic identifies as “A large group of periscope depth submarines, no more than one Type-XIX, one Type-XIII’s, multiple Type VII’s and IX’s (OOC note: while VII couldn’t make it to Argentina on their own, with some help from a milk cow this is well in limit of something possible) two Santa-Fe’s, which are quickly identified as ARA submarine regrouping fleet. Comically enough on their advance the submarines that are still maintaining radio silence and expect for the Argentinians to identify them by sonar signature, but instead are misjudged to being UK attacking submarines and are engaged by Type XXI, which even fires an T-5 at them. With a clever use of maneuvering and knuckles, the attacked submarine, U-500, evades the torpedo, sending some short but very strong-worded communications both to Type XXI and the allied command. After sorting out this misunderstanding, submarines join in with the ARA fleet, awaiting further orders. While Dobratz, Kreshmer and most of the officers of the fleet do much more experience than their Argentinian counterparts, they understand that trying to mess up the chain of command will only serve to further derail their mission, and as such accept Gusto Vera’s command.

The Commanding officer broke radio silence to give a few commands to his units, as by now, the subs had left the primary patrol routes of the British and American units and any radio communication was highly unlikely to be detected. The only way, in his eyes, to be detected was if a rogue plane strayed far from its patrol route, which was all in all an unlikely event.

Estevan thought about how he hadn't visited Rio Grande Do Sul since his childhood years as he crossed the state line from Santa Catarina to Brazil's former southern-most state. The trucks behind him were spaced out quite erratically, some being only a few car lengths apart, others well over a mile. Estevan sat in the front passenger seat of the second vehicle leading the escort south westbound on Highway 150 towards Erechim. The first vehicle drove about 100 yards in front of them.

The convoy consisted of 15 vehicles. 5 of which were escorts, with three in the front of the convoy and two in the back. Each of the escort vehicles were Jeep Willys of different 1950s variants; the one Estevan rode in was a 1955. The 10 other vehicles, the convoy itself, all comprised of commercial trucks with covered truck beds. 5 of the trucks were full of weapon crates. MP-40s, M1 Grands, Thompsons, Stens and Sterlings, M3s, M1 Bazookas, and more. In total, the trucks carried over 100000 rounds of ammunition. The other 5 trucks hauled pirates, just under 200 in fact. These Pirates were to assist the Argentine military in defending the coastline of the mainland.

They still had 15 hours in their journey before they reached Buenos Aires, where they would hand their cargo to Argentine military contacts familiar with the Pirate State and its intentions. From the capital, the Pirates would then make haste southward, towards the frontline between the Argentinians and recently landed US soldiers.

Estevan slowly began to doze off as the convoy continued its days long trip through South America.

As the translating officer’s English was… far from perfect, it was unanimously agreed that it would be preferable to keep communicating in Spanish, because a torpedo officer at the U-313, a Spanish-Lakan immigrant, Roberta Halconero, could easily translate the communications.
-Copy that, sir, we are at your disposal!

While the Lakan subs will follow ARA around, traveling a bit in the lead, to avoid the less advanced subs revealing subs, they will do it almost always while submerged, snorkeling only at night and evading being detected by enemy forces. As their passive sonar is far more effective than those of Argentinians, it is well within possibility that they will be able to detect the enemy ships firstly.

Waters off the Coast of the Malvinas
The two fleets of Submarines circled the islands as the hours grew later. Complacency had replaced the sense of high alert within the ranks of the Argentine sailors after no enemy vessels had been spotted. A thick fog had come over the islands, which further hampered the attempt to defend against a possible landing.
And then, hell broke loose. As Captain Vera broke the surface to let his engines breathe, the submarine shook violently. Water began pouring into the hull of the vessel as the men inside yelled in fear. Captain Vera’s face went white as he realized he had made a fatal error: he had failed to properly seal hatches. His men desperately attempted to close the breach, but the water had already filled too many compartments. The order to abandon ship was given as it began to sink bow first into the icy waters. As the men desperately fought to escape, they heard the chilling sound of Americans yelling. They had accidentally rammed a destroyer, whose crew was now firing on the unarmed and defenseless Argentinean sailors. An SOS signal was sent out before the ship slipped back beneath the waves, taking Captain Vera and many of her crew with her.

Slaver Pirates of Vaas wrote:Snip

The convoy of vehicles was shadowed by a lone jet, flying too high for detection with the eyes. The lack of discipline in the convoy gave away their position from the air. The Argentine pilot tightly gripped the joystick as he descended. It was unlikely, but an American jet could possibly be in the area. Getting lower to identify the convoy was a move that would leave him vulnerable. He made sure to avoid flying directly over them, instead choosing to fly off to the side to avoid provoking them.
Just as his command had suspected, it was the pirate convoy. The Pilot radioed in their positions and dipped his wings to show his peaceful intent. More air support was moving in to provide escorts, should any American jets move in to intercept the supply line. However, the Argentinean forces had no way of communicating this with the Pirates via radio.

-Idiots! What the hell are these morons doing?! They’re going to get themselves…- if anything was true about Vizeadmiral it’s that at the moment he was NOT having a good time, alongside with Kreshmer.
-Sir, acoustic contact, heading straight for argentine submarine, it’s a destroyer!
-Well, great, what could also go wrong? Are these morons going to…
-Sir, looks like the Argentinians are abandoning the ship! Americans… They’re opening fire at them!
-Fucking awesome, just awesome!, sarcastically replied Kreshmer in a maddened voice,- now they’re even ready to commit war crimes!- you know,- he pointed at the young third officer, a Lakan who didn’t participate in the WW2,- even when they were fighting nazis they never fired at the men overboard. Never. Now they’re fighting Argentinians, who are just defending their land and that’s how they treat them? Well, let’s see how they’ll like a piece of their own medicine… Periscope!
-Frekap?
-Measure the American’s heading, speed and distance to us. Prepare aft tube, we will fire off a G10ev (Mk-37 analogue) at them! Keep the wire for as long as possible. After we will fire, we will enter a steady dive to 250 meters- their submarine weapons don’t work this well there. Our sub’s test depth is 210 meters, but fear not- I’ve brought old Type VII to 280 and came out without a scratch!- Kreshmer explained himself to the admiral, who was beginning to express concerns about the safety of the dive. Still, he had one major concern:
-Sir, I’m afraid that I can’t allow you to attack their destroyer. There are still ARA men in the water- the blast will finish them up!
-Vizeadmiral, with all due respect, they’re ALREADY dead. The Americans are firing at them, finishing them off one by one- what difference would it make if our torpedo or an American bullet finishes their lives?
Thinking for a couple of seconds, Dobratz took no time in allowing to continue with the attack.

The submarine would, after measuring the American destroyer’s characteristics needed for a successful torpedo launch fire an acoustic torpedo and dive away from the periscope depth. Because they’ve fired an aft torpedo they should be able to keep the wire for a prolonged period, which will allow for the weapons officer to guide it in to the target before it goes active. The rest of the fleet signals the Argentinians to dive and escape- the rest of the American forces will converge on Lakan submarine group which will allow for the ARA subs to escape. U-404 will be tasked with attacking the destroyer should U-500’s torpedo miss or go dud and the other two conventionals have their orders to dive to 210 to avoid detection and lie in wait.

The Kingdom of the Two Mexicos sits on a knifes edge of conflicting internal interests between southern Zapatistas and northern Caudillos. Creating an outlet for this tension is paramount to preserve the union, and so riding on a wave of jingoism the Kingdom joins the Argentine American War by declaring the Second Reconquista, this time targeting the American southern states and Florida.

Zapatist Mexico has contributed Mayan and Zapotec forces based on the crown gaurantee that Florida and Georgia will become Zapatist states under the Kingdom upon the defeat of the United States. The bulk of the Mexican forces, however, are those of the President of the French Fourth Republic in Exile in Louisiana, himself a caudillo under North Mexico, who has been promised large portions of the eastern Mississippi basin to add to his territory. Fearing his own forces would be insufficient to defeat the American land forces, the President has called upon New Mexican, Upper Mississippi and Mormon Utah Caudillos to contribute forces in exchange for concessions of Louisiana territory, or promises of a portion of new territory in the Midwest and Great Lakes region.

The forces pledged to the war have been organized by the Crown into two columns, one focusing on the Gulf coast offensive, and the other targeting the upper Mississippi and great lakes region. The Tejano 3rd Rifle Brigade was the first unit to enter the United States, attacking US Army positions around Mobile.

The Crown of the Two Mexicos sends a message to Peronist Argentina, expressing the hope that this land invasion will tie up American forces in the defense of their homeland, and will ease naval pressure the Argentinians may face.

The American destroyer’s crew ceased firing on the Argentinean sailors as their submarine sank into the depths. After a few pot-shots, they threw nets overboard, allowing the non-wounded sailors to come aboard as POWs. Many of the wounded were in the process of being carried when an American lookout began screaming a warning for the incoming torpedo. The Captain of the vessel tried in vain to have his ship move forwards. The torpedo struck the stern, sending burning red strips of metal flying in every direction. Almost immediately, a fire broke out on her deck as she began to list heavily to port.
Local American ships quickly swarmed the area, their radar detecting the unknown hostile submarines as they dove. Depth charges were dropped in an attempt to sink at least one of the submarines while they descended from the surface.
Unfortunately for the Lakans and their allies, the American ground forces had already landed. They had made it unopposed, save for a few casualties from a mine. But now, thanks to seeing the Argentine sub, their morale began to waver as they realized they could be left stranded

-The enemy destroyer is hit! Looks like… Looks like we’ve blown their screws and rudder clean off! Men, we’ve got ourselves a mission kill!- sonar operator was sounding more then enthusiastic, her cheerfulness had captured the minds of the other crew members relatively fast,- most of them either did not knew or did not care about possibly killing the ARA men- sinking a whole destroyer was seen as being an acceptable trade for couple dozens of lifes. Interestingly, after the submarine had dived away, they immediately began picking up multiple enemy ships, advancing on their position. However, every single crew member knew what they should do:
-Weapons officer!
-Sir?
-Prepare to launch Sieglinde-IIIB sonar decoys, Bolds (other type of decoys) and Thetis-VI radar decoy!
-But sir, the aft torpedo tube is still pumping the water out, they can’t…
-I don’t care, fire it off from the frontal torpedo tube!
The reason weapons officer expressed his doubts is that, usually, radar decoys are fired from the aft torpedo tube- now the weapons servicemen and conscripts will have to carry the decoy all the way to the frontal tubes- while this is certainly faster than pumping the water out of them, this still will take some time, during which the submarine will perform standard evasive maneuvers to avoid the enemy getting a successful dive bomb run- diving and raising, rapidly changing directions- all the usual stuff. The sonar operator will be in a lookout for any enemy acoustic torpedo that might want to join the party.
