Intro

During the economic boom of the 1920's, Domanania was modernizing, and was experiencing a population boom. During this time, numerous foreign companies were invited in to help promote economic growth. However, when the Great Depression began, these foreign companies began to drain the Doman people and government of their wealth to fill their pockets before pulling out of the country. In the following year, 3 million people were out of a job and homeless.

The government at this time, being corrupt and dubiously elected, began to institute radical policies that drained more wealth from the nation to fill their personal pockets. They also turned to military expansion to curtail unemployment. During this time, there was growing socialist support among factory workers and the unemployed. In 1930, over 230,000 socialist workers began to strike and protest across the country. This socialist organization was known as the "Free Workers of Domanania" or FWD. On August 3rd, 1930 25,000 workers marched on the capitol to protest. Members of government fled from the capitol to their personal estates, leaving the capitol abandoned.

The commander of the armed forces, Djaewo Pyuto, was appalled by the governments mishandling of the crisis. With the support of the heads of the Army, and Navy, Djaewo would invoke a constitutional right held by the military to declare martial law. On February 13th 1931, Djaeweo would march on the capitol with 5,000 troops and would declare the National Diet a hazard to the public good, and arrested all 180 members of the Diet. On the 15th, the Prime Minister and his cabinet was placed under house arrest, and would resign their positions on the same hour on the 20th. Following the constitutional line of succession, the Commander of the Armed forces assumes temporary control of the nation until a new election is held.

Widespread protests against this seizure of power drew the ire of the military commanders. On March 3rd, the military government declared the FWD a criminal organization that was crippling the nation. The military then began to crack down on FWD supporters and other groups of people they believed to be "Detrimental to the Health of the Nation". Since 1929, government facilities housed minorities and forced them to work to earn bread. Under the temporary government, FWD supporters and minorities were increasingly forced into camps and ghettos.

On March 12th, new members of the national Diet were appointed. By law, the Diet needed a minimum of 20 members to be considered legitimate. Djaewo and his supporters appointed military leaders and loyal politicians to the Diet and held a closed election while under martial law. By an overwhelming majority, Djaewo Pyuto was elected as Prime Minister of Domanania, with a 20-1 vote in favor. Over the next three months the temporary government increasingly centralized support under the Prime Minister, and suspended free elections, turning it into a fully militarized structure and turning it into a true Junta.

At the same time, opposition to the coup was growing stronger. FWD support also grew as people were increasingly arrested or killed by the Junta forces. Opposition grew violent when on July 23rd, 1931 a group of 20 FWD workers began to fire upon a Junta patrol in Tawunt. A firefight broke out leaving 12 Junta troops, 15 FWD supporters, and 5 civilians dead. Opposition would only grow more violent over the next several years.

During this time, a splinter group of the FWD known as the "People's Army of Domanania" separated themselves from the FWD to try and increase communist support. The PAD would fight both the FWD and the Junta, seeing both as enemies of the people.

By 1933, the Nation was in a full state of civil war, as FWD forces fought the full might of the Junta military forces while both sides were hit with sabotage and terrorist attacks from the PAD. With the increasing violence against civilians, members of the Junta army and navy deserted to fight on the side of the FWD or PAD. In the case of the navy, individual captains deserted with their crews, giving the "rebels" a fighting chance against the overwhelming forces of the Junta.

Imperial war

In 1937 the war was stagnant. The Junta forces controlled much of the west and north coast, the FWD controlled much of the land in the center of the nation and west coast, and the PAD managed to carve out small pockets of resistance over the entire country.

An invasion force of Athara Magarat landed in the country in 1937, beginning the "Doman War". They took advantage of the destabilized state to try and win a quick war in the wider Imperial War. This didn't go as planned as the three forces agreed to a temporary cease fire to drive back the invaders.

Over the course of the war, the forces of Domanania managed to hold the invaders to the north coast.

The Junta forces committed to suicidal attacks against enemy lines, and indiscriminately targeted civilians as well as increasing the number of civilians placed in concentration camps and ghettos. Despite the cease fire, Junta command would always take chances to attack weakened pockets of FWD or PAD forces. One of these attacks occurred against the PAD when the leaders gathered to discuss strategy. The command structure of the PAD was destroyed over night. This lead to a period in time when invading forces pushed further into the country, as the PAD was successful at sabotaging their supply lines, slowing their advances.

The FWD committed to a guerrilla style war. In particular, they preferred to capture enemy equipment to then use against them. This proved very effective in training FWD forces to use conventional tactics, and gave them a significant boost to their equipment, which would improve their odds against Junta forces.

By late 1944, both forces drove the invaders off the island, and partook in military actions in the larger imperial war near the end. While they were two separate forces, the Junta was the only representative at the negotiation table at the end of the war.

1947-1960

Near the end of the Imperial war, the two sides continued the cease fire to try and negotiate a peace, to end the civil war. After 6 months negotiations broke down as the FWD wanted a return to democracy with their socialist ideals being the guiding force, and the Junta wanted to maintain their control and bring about their "Perfect Nation". By 1947, the fighting began again, with the FWD and Junta forces on more or less equal footing.

This is where other nations may get involved (if they weren't already involved in the early years)

There is a timeline i have that outlines the civil war up until its conclusion.

1947
: Both Junta and FWD forces offer to sell old ships for support.
1948: The FWD Announces the formation of the Congressional Republic, and their desires to return to Democracy

April 2nd, 1953: Junta forces begin using chemical weapons against Republic forces and civilians. Smuggled footage and reports alert the region to the atrocities.
May 4th, 1953: Junta forces deny using chemical weapons. They release footage of "Republic Executions" in an attempt to show that the republic is just as guilty of atrocities. This was infact Junta forces at a concentration camp. This footage wouldn't be debunked until 1959.
November 12th, 1953: Republic forces attack Haerusrán to retake t he city, begining the 2nd Battle of Haerusrán
January 9th, 1953: Republic forces retake the city. Junta forces launch hundreds of unguided missiles into the city using chemical weapons. Kills 2,000 civilians in 4 months.

Mid 1957: Nuclear test publicized to the region
Late 1957: Island campaign concluded. Captured or destroyed most aircraft and ships belonging the the Junta government.
Early 1958: Junta forces pushed back to Saekrásá. Battle of Saekrásá Begins.
February 6th, 1958: Junta forces detonate a 20kt nuclear device off the north coast of Domanania. Device was placed on a destroyer and detonated outside the major harbor. 50 people would die from radiation sickness over the next year because of this device.
April 1958: Junta government widely condemned for atmospheric test. Battle of Saekrásá ends in republic victory.
Mid 1958: Large scale assault towards Tawunt

June 1st, 1960: Republic forces raid Junta compound, capturing several high ranking generals
October 5th, 1960: Republic forces declare the Junta dissolved and the remaining troops and officials as terrorists
After: A cruel guerilla war would continue until 1970 when Djaewo would die of a heart attack and most of the remaining generals and officials surrendered. This would officially end the insurgency, and the last official threats of the Junta forces.

and this is where the civil war official ends.

I want this war to be rather even up to about 1954 where it begins to turn in the favor of the Republic, with nations supporting either side either directly or indirectly.

This thread is to discuss different responses, levels of support, and overall involvement in the conflict. The IC thread which i will post at a later date hopefully will be a series of IC posts about people's reactions, Official statements, or viewpoints of people directly impacted by this.

Keep in mind, the events here are just an outline and not set in stone. They are subject to change based on the responses of others.

I have some ideas for Ioudan involvement in the Doman Civil War.

Based on the short description of the factions, Ioudaia would likely have become involved early, providing money to the FWD long before the civil war. But there is a certain irony to this: as Ioudaia was itself increasing its modernization after 1925, replacing industrialized artisanal work with mass production, it's likely some of those exploitative companies were Ioudan. Sorry about that. :)

Once the civil war broke out, our support would have increased to non-lethal aid, then weapons, advisors, and finally our own troops. How much support the FWD got and how quickly it grew would have depended entirely on the FWD's goals and methods. The better they were (more democracy, civil rights, rule of law, respect for the laws of war) the more support. If they were just the least bad, well, Ioudaia would have taken what it could get, but if necessary, letting the Doman grey-and-black combatants slaughter each other and then moving in to impose Ioudaia's vision of order would have been acceptable.

Ioudaia would have sought to carve out buffer zones in Domanania in the west (junta held) to prevent waves of refugees. In the east, Ioudaia would have provided civil support to the FWD to run refugee camps, and maintain civil order to the same end.

All of this would have naturally dragged Ioudaia into the IW once AM shows up.

So, supporting the FWD early on, would you have been an instigator, trying to provoke them to doing more?

And early on before the IW, the FWD was mostly using guerilla tactics and tried to stick to military and government targets. Of course in the nature of things, early on there were civilian casualties.

Also, a lot of the terrible things the Junta did weren't public knowledge until much later on. So while they were very evil, a lot of their worst behaviors weren't known for a while. Such as the concentration camps weren't public information until 1955.

New Jacobland became a socialist state in 1949, so I would definitely see them supporting the Socialists here. It would probably begin from 1951 onwards, because a new nation can't immediately jump into a massive foreign war. The socialists in New Jacobland end up getting overthrown in 1962.

Nah, it's kind of hard to say we support people's self-determination while trying to use them for our own ends.

Domanania wrote:And early on before the IW, the FWD was mostly using guerilla tactics and tried to stick to military and government targets. Of course in the nature of things, early on there were civilian casualties.

So long as civvie casualties were accidental or were justified under whatever laws of war TWI has at the time, it won't cause a problem.

Well, there's "public knowledge" and there's "things a resistance movement/guerrilla force would know". IMO, the FWD and PAD would probably know about some atrocities and parts of some of the very large ones, but wouldn't know everything. At least, that's been the situation about RL atrocities.

The FWD did try to limit civilian casualties as much as possible. And similar to WW2, people could know something was up with the camps, but the true horrors of the inside wouldn't be well known until the camps were liberated. Footage would be smuggled out at times, but the Junta would do everything in their power to play down the evidence and even out right deny it

No need to jump in from the outset. I have it listed that the first foreign troops arrive in mid '53. You don't even have to get involved in depth until later.

Or, perhaps, in their attempt to throw a huge amount of support behind the Republic that it exacerbates the situation that leads to them getting overthrown. Such as providing too much material and troops that the economic situation worsens, war weariness ect. that leads to their collapse.

As it's a very long and protracted campaign; I doubt Altera would get involved directly - at least not at the beginning of the Civil War.

Towards the end of the Civil War would be around the time Altera would be facing similar intervention in Aprosia; the Aprosian Emergency - when Altera was attempting to assist the legitimate government in quelling communist/nationalist uprisings (though the uprisings were overwhelmingly communist led) - so there would be a certain degree of sympathy and concern that a Doman-style civil war would erupt in Aprosia.

It's difficult for Altera; on the one hand you get a somewhat stronger, but illegitimate government - and on the other a potential ally and republic; but with socialist leanings. In the grand scheme of things, I think Altera would support the Republicans - how we support them is another matter.

Arms? Supplies? Volunteers or possibly "volunteers"? I'm open to discuss.

I think that whatever you do, coordination with Ioudaia would be beneficial, since both countries are supporting the same faction. If Altera's government doesn't want to appear to be involved, aid can be "laundered" via Ioudaia, since the fighting is on the country's border, and later spills over into Ioudaia itself.

Any sort of cooperation in the Doman War could lead to coordination in the IW once Altera joins the fighting, which seems like it would be helpful in the naval battles in the Mesder Seas. At the least, information-sharing between the two navies in reconnaisance seems advantageous, even if they don't otherwise work together.

I think the plan Dorm and I discussed (as you all know, my memory can be hazy so apologies if this is incorrect), Altera was to quietly supply arms to the rebels at the beginning of the war - so Ioudaia could be used as the intermediary.

However, when it's clear Alterans need to be involved; we'd be able to send expeditionary forces to assist. I imagine no grand armies - but akin to the light infantry and light armour sent to Malaya by the British in the Malayan Emergency - which will be very similar to the Aprosian Emergency around the same time as well.

Ah, even with AM absent, looks like my original pitch still sticks. We can supply arms, train troops or hell, even deploy some light infantry to assist the anti-junta forces.

So with the absence of AM regarding the civil war, i will be making a few changes to the timeline.

Namely, having the Junta be overthrown in the 1970's as apposed to the 60's.

I would like to make the civil war still be more of a rebellion until the IW. Without the baptism of fire that the civil war had previously, i think it would make sense to have the civil war to have a slower burn to start, but still ramps up after the IW.

Ioudaia Being the neighbor that Altera previously funneled weapons through i was thinking that to keep the Junta busy and unable to interfere with the IW that Ioudaia began training the FWD and provide more weapons than before.

Im also thinking of delaying the formation of the Congressional Republic until the mid 50's after a successful series of raids against Junta assets in the west and successfully capturing certain cities. I think it would work well if pushing from the west, out of Ioudaia that they capture the Kevaae province, which would give access to a major port.

Alteran Republics Which brings me to AR. Previously you funneled some weapons and personnel through Ioudaia, but when would Altera ramp up support to try and help speed along the collapse of the Junta?

Jointly i was also thinking that perhaps Ioudaia and Altera could coordinate to enforce an embargo on the Junta during the last 10 years after it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were up to some evil stuff in concentration camps (and perhaps even delaying WMD programs, and the knowledge the Junta was developing them could hasten actions against them)

An embargo sounds like a grand idea; would a no-fly-zone be on the books as well?

I would have no problems with that idea. Especially if the embargo is in place and the Junta attempts to harass ships trying to enforce it. Which, if done well enough, might weaken the Juntas total air control over the country and allow further air support from the Republic

Due to Kaskalma’s proximity to the conflict we would have backed the original government before the junta was declared. After that the King would send in spies and politicians to attempt to establish a monarchy. This would be a pretty irrelevant faction but large enough to irritate the two main factions.
