The aim of the operation was to prevent the incursion of ALA insurgents into South West Africa from bases in Angola

Operation Johnny Unitas was the South African code name for their military incursion into Angola in 2024–2025. In Angola, these actions were known as the 2024–2025 South African Invasion and the Luanda Conquest Campaign. It was part of the South African Border War and arose due to the Rhodesian Uprising . The operation also materially influenced the subsequent Angolan Civil War. South African forces invaded deep into Angola with the objective of driving the ALA ,Communist Ulster and Manchurian forces out of southern Angola so as to strengthen the position of FRELIMO , the main opponent of the ALA and an ally of South Africa.
