Insaani House of Representation Votes on Shariā [IC/Open]

The Insaani House of Representation is about to vote on something that deeply divided the country: should shariā be the law of the land.
Insaanistan is Muslim majority, and Islam is the national religion. However, laws are in place to protect religious minorities from persecution, and it has taken pride in its multicultural and multi-religious identity.
While shariā itself doesn’t include oppression of religious minorities, in the modern era, it generally ends up that way in practice. Many Christians, Hindus, Druze, Sikhs and atheists fear persecution in the name of religion.

The same can be said for homosexuals in Insaanistan. In 2020, President Mustafa ibn Sina Abu Jamal officially made homosexual relationships and/or intercourse a crime. However, as to “follow Islamic principles”, it was a crime with literally no punishment whatsoever. With Mustafa dead, many gay people in Insaanistan fear their protection will die with him.

Protests are being organized around Cairo, where the vote is taking place. If it passes in the House of Representation, it will move to the National General for them to vote as to whether it will enter.

The amendment imposing shariā is championed by the relatively newly popular National Islamic Party (NIP) and Hizb Islamiyya fil Ard an-Nas (HIN). Everyone in Insaanistan is carefully watching, as the outcome effects virtually everyone.

Leader of the HIN, Abdul-Ghaffar Yusuf, steps up to speak.
He clears his throat.
“Bismillahi rahman ar-raheem.
As-salaamu Ālaykum wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatuhu. We are gathered here today to discuss what many of my adversaries will have you believe is a complex issue. But in reality, it is quite simple: should we or should we not follow our religion and implement its laws as our law? Why is it our pseudo-religious munafiqeen colleagues try to make it seem different from how it is? Do they not love Allah and his Prophets (peace be upon them)? Or are the so concerned with what our Western counterparts think of us that they throw out Allah’s words to suit them? Insaanistan is already a Muslim country. It is high time we make it an Islamic one. It is high time we do our founders and ancestors proud, and forget the legacy of that traitor Abu Jamal.
As-Salaamu Ālaykum.”
He steps down from the podium and returns to his seat.

María Rosada of the Democratic Liberal People’s Party stands up.
“Hello Fellow Representatives. I shall not begin my speech the same way as Mr. Yusuf, as I am not a Muslim. I am Catholic and proud to be one. But I will not be is subject to, of all things, an Islamic state. Islam is a religion of war and oppression...”
This drew gasps and protests from many of the other Representatives.
“If you don’t like Muslims, then leave!” one, Ali al-Masri of the NIP, shouted.
“That brings me to my next point, Mr. Masri,” she said. “If this House goes ahead and votes to impose sharia law on this nation, we in España,” she continued, making a point of saying “España” rather than it’s official name (which is an Arabized pronunciation of it), Êsbanya, “will not wait for the National General to block or certify it. We will immediately secede from this nation! If it doesn’t work for us,” she yelled over the indignant cries and yells of “Traitor! Traitor!”
“...we will not live in it!”
The only ones clapping were other DLPP members. Most of them were also from the Iberian Peninsula and sympathized with her.
María sat down, glaring at Ali al-Masri.

Firnas al-Andalusi of the Iberian-Maghrebi Democratic Party (IMDP) steps up.
“As-salaamu Ālaykum.
I start this way unlike Ms. Rosada. She is no more Êsbani than I am, but I am a Muslim. My grandparents were Moroccans who moved to Granada, in the South of the peninsula, where there ancestors were expelled by Ms. Rosada’s ancestors,” he said, pointing a finger at her.
“But I don’t blame her or Catholics for those actions. While I am firmly against the the imposition of shariā on all of Insaanistan...”
This drew grumbles from some other Parliamentarians.
“... I also do not stand for this assault on our democracy and it’s values, or the religion of the majority of its people! You Ms. Rosada, have stepped out of line, and God of Christians and Muslims alike as my witness, you will answer for it somehow, whether in this dunya or in the akhira.
Salaam.”
He stepped down to boos from DLPP, NIP and HIN members but cheers from most of the rest of the body.

Democratic-Socialist Party member, Moshe Gómez, stands up and walks to the podium.
“I begin my speech today not with salaam, but which Shalom. Shalom Aleichem. I am a Jew. Like both Mr. Andalusi and Ms. Rosada, I have Iberian roots. And I have little to say except this: I oppose the enforcement of sharia on Insaanistan, but I would much rather live under an Islamic regime than a Catholic one.”
He sat down amid applause and boos.

Āisha Muhammad from the Democratic Party stood up and went to the podium.
“Asalaamu Ālaykum.
Today was supposed to a decision on whether or not religious law should be imposed on Insaanistan. But all I saw today was exactly why we can’t do that. Intolerance. Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh: this is all our land.
There is nothing wrong with shariā. But we can’t have it, because there is something wrong with those imposing it.
Salaam.”

After a flight from Aragon on his presidential plane to Insaanistan, the usual convoy, arriving at his lodgings, and finally getting ready, Nicolas Furia heads to the House of Representatives building. Along the way he is thinking of how frequently he goes to Insaanistan. He comes through the main entrance, where everyone can see him, flanked by bodyguards, his Minister of Foreign Affairs and a few advisors.

Qassim Ali of the NIP steps up to the podium.
“Salaamu Ālaykum.
Shariā can and should be the law of Insaanistan. When implemented correctly, shariā liberates women, protects the young and defends religious minorities. Only when perpetrated the way Saudi Arabia, Iran and DAESH interpret it with their radical un-Islamic oppression does it become a problem. I ask Allah that you all agree to allow it to be the official law of this blessed land. Amin.
As-salaamu Ālaykum.”

Nicolas Furia nods. He begins to take notes, secretly, on what different parties believe. He hopes there will not be a party that wishes for Sharia law in the extremist style.

The Delegate Ruiz is taking notes as his initial government attitude is for the possibility of a moderate muslim government, but more conservative than Mustafa.

Jon Rhodes was on a private plane financed by the D.I.M. en route to Insaanistan. The Warp that the Insaani government opened to the Jamesian Republic was over the Atlantic Ocean. Then the plane crossed over into Insannistan. If the calculations were correct, the warp should have them over Tripoli. Jon was 23 and fresh out of Mid-West University. He got hired as a reporter for the Victory City Times. He was the youngest reporter in its history to be hired. He got this assignment after two D.I.M. agents spoke to the editor. President Lewis was expected to arrive in Insaanistan later this month. They chose him because he was young and he had a good record. Insaanistan recently just got over a short civil war. Though there has been some uneasiness in the country ever since. Sharia law was very foreign to the Muslim governments of the world. Sharia had been used in the 18th and 19th centuries, and died out in the 20th. The D.I.M. was conducting research into Insaanistan and part of this assignment was to learn about the happenings of the government and people. The plane soon enough landed in Cairo.

After going through the airport and settling in a hotel room in Cairo, Jon went down to the Senate building. He went through security and went to the press area. He saw several people from different countries. He was guided to a place reserved for The Jamesian Republic. He took notes on what has already happened.
*A representative from Spain threatened that if Sharia law is adopted, the territory will secede.
* The debate has begun.

Furia passes a note that is eventually passed on to the leaders of the parties in favor of Sharia law. It asks "If Sharia law is imposed, does that mean Langenian soldiers that fought, died, and got hurt fighting the Islamic Republic, who had Sharia, as well as their Kamilistani allies, died in vain?"

Asim Tamzali steps up to the podium.
“Asalaamu Ālaykum.
The foreigner, Mr. Furia, asks whether or not his men died in vain. Well, I have an answer. We never asked for your help. That bloody coward Abu Jamal did. We take no responsibility for your waste of your men’s lives!”

Many Parliamentarians yelled at Asim angrily for such a remark. However, he didn’t back down, though he did sit down.

"And my men? the men who helped save your country? The men who liberated Italy? The men who helped take out the Rayanes? The men, who when the Isaani army was near collapse, stood with you in your darkest hours?" He said angrily
"And the Langenians fought fiercely to protect you anf free SPain. In fact, I say, with out both of our men and others, you would have fallen months ago. This very assembly would not exist!"

“Agreed!” said a Democratic Parliamentarian. He turned to Asim “You disrespect not just the foreigners martyred on our soil! You disrespect yourself, you pig!”
Asim stared angrily. “...What did you call me?!”
“A pig! That’s what you are!”
Asim and the Democrat were now face to face and yelled angrily at each other.

"Enough! I know all of you are civilized persons! Mr. Asim, though I am an observer, I will not sit quietly while I am insulted! Are you not grateful for what me and my men did for your country? If it weren't for the forces of Langenia, Romextly, and other esteemed nations, you wouldn't be here! You wouldn't even have the opportunity to attempt to impose Sharia! Back in my country there are families who lost relatives to keep communist and Rayane terrorists at bay! Is that a waste of men? Is it a waste to men to stop terrorists that are no better than Daesh?" He sits back down glaring angrily.

Archipelago Bay's President, Xin Smith, issues a public statement regarding the vote.

"We stand for tolerance of all, no matter where they come from, who they are, or what they believe. We try not to get too involved in the internal politics of other nationstates, however we are against the application of Shariā in Insaani. This is due to a myriad of reasons, mainly that we oppose the death penalty and view any expansion of that as likely leading to a miscarriage of justice. Secondly, as Homosexuality cannot be controlled we view it as cruel to punish Homosexuals and that the state should have no business in what consenting adults do in the bedroom. We understand there are cultural sensitivities at play but we sincerely hope that Insaani remains the compassionate Islamic nation it now is instead of going down the path of being hardline."

Eventually, things settled down.
