It was terrifying to behold. Even if one was filled with loathing towards the people of Hulti, it was still nightmarish – hundreds of thousands of people, in the grip of fear for their lives, running to leave the city. The roads overflowed with the teeming masses of mankind. Some wept, some prayed, some swore terribly at the traffic jams. One could smell it – the terror-infused sweat of the teeming multitudes. Where they could, the locals got off the roads and ran into the woods. Many of them had been slave-catchers, and now hoped to use the skills that they used for their craft to survive in the wild.

For a brief hour or two, they moved almost unimpeded, while the Allaneans took stock of the captured city. It is then that they discovered the awful truth – thousands of domestic slaves, left shot or stabbed to death in the homes of their masters, or simply lying in the street. Only a small fraction remained alive.
The Allanean soldiers found the city records, and they have discovered that it had been the place where hundreds of thousands of slave-catchers, overseers, and others had lived, that its entire society revolved around enslaving others.

Now their attention turned to the city multitudes. Now it was a terrible time.

The helicopters descended, moving low above the ground, the sound of their engines deafening. Rocket pods came life with fire and smoke, streaking out to the refugee column. Down below, trucks and buses caught flame. Men who were walking along the road with their meager belongings fell to the ground, shrapnel scything through their bodies.

Some – those who were the most fit, or perhaps the most experienced, ran off the rod, running across the fields as fast as their legs could take them, to the lifesaving edge of the woods.

Then the helicopters turned, automatic cannon clattering the ground around the fleeing figures churning up in smoke, and several of the figures fell to the ground and moved no longer.

Rafail Pardakis had taken off his uniform shirt. He thought it would be enough, that the Allaneans would recognize him in the masses of refugees.

As he fled by foot from the city he saw the Allaneans' rage. He saw armored vehicles firing automatic cannon into the crowds as they attempted to flee. He saw slave-catchers and officers hanged from lamp posts or nailed to trees. Fighter jets, passing over the crowds, dropped incendiaries and cluster bombs as the Hultians ran.

Where he could, he ran. Where he could not, he walked, or sneaked, or crawled. He crawled through a ditch for hundreds of yards to avoid being spotted by the invader soldiers, even as they cut down dozens with their rifles and finished off the wounded with their bayonets.

Rafail was, at last, in sight of the woods.

He could smell the forest from here.

He began running. Half a minute's run, he thought, and he would be in the shade of the trees. They could not get him there.

And then he heard the barking.

Enormous, grey dogs, running and leaping across the field with ease. Rafail's uncle was a slave-catcher – he had seen dogs used to catch slaves. He knew there was no chance of fleeing from a pack of dogs.

He stopped. Tears ran down his cheeks as the dogs approached. Behind them, the Allaneans – three soldiers, their leader with his face tattooed in bluish ink. They laughed as they caught up with him. He was crying, bent over, his hands pressing against his knees.

"Mercy." – he said, in broken Common. "I'm sorry…. Sorry… please, mercy, I have not-"

The soldiers laughed as their leader swung his rifle to his shoulder. Pain blazed through Rafail's kneecap and the hand that had been pressing against it.

"What…" – he whimpered as he fell over – "I surrender, please, have mercy-"

"Hulti's mercy!" – one of the soldiers laughed – "That's the one you'll get!"

They were, in fact, quite merciful. The next shot after that was a headshot.
