The Ausferilandian Winter War

Ausferiland, an ally of the VSO which neighbors Zolevskoy, an ally of the ABC Defense Etente and Kruppstadt Pact. Although both countries have remained at odds since the Ausferilandian coup in 1996, tensions came to a boiling point in September after a terrorist attack struck Acre, the capital of Ausferiland. A Zolevskoyan ethnonationalist organization claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed over 80 civilians. In response, Ausferilandian president Petko Alexander introduced the Citizen’s Security Law, which would force ethnic Zolevskoyans to be expelled to the northern regions of the country. Ethnic Zolevskoyans begin protesting throughout the country, which begin to be suppressed by the Ausferiland National Defense Force after two weeks of rioting. Outraged, armed protesters take over the city of Glaz in northern Ausferiland, and soon after declare the creation of the Republic of South Kardzhali. Rebel forces, aided by a number of ethnic Zolevskoyan ANDF forces who defected, begin to make gains in the region.

Now it is November, only 2 months since the beginning of the war. Despite the OCN attempting to bring the war under control and bring peace, some do not want the war just yet. While Zolevskoy and it's allies seek to bolster the South Kardzhali rebels and weaken a VSO ally in the region, the VSO seeks to bolster the government forces and prevent Zolevskoy from gaining influence in the region. Neither side intends to back down from the fight until one bloc succeeds, and Ausferiland is is their newest battleground of Vesperia.

11/12/2020 - President Valov reasserts commitment to to Ausfer-Zolevskoyans despite Ausferilandian backlash

President Valov reasserted his commitment to supporting the Zolevskoyan minority in Ausferiland and the South Kardzhali prot-state today, stating that any threats to the existence of Zolevskoy and it's people will result in a "decisive and overwhelming" response. These comments come at the same time as he confirmed that an additional 20,000 troops of the Republic of Zolevskoy Armed Forces will be deployed to the border region, including several batteries of PPSD-20 SAMs and cruise missile launchers. Speaking to reporters outside the Montazh though, Zolevskoyan defense minister Teodor Cherganski used less fiery language, saying only that Zolevskoy was capable of defending against any Ausferilandian threats, and that it's commitments to protecting the Zolevskoyans of Ausferiland were "set in stone".

"Ausferiland has committed themselves to threatening our people within and outside of their borders time and time again. Any threats against us allies will be met with a disproportionate response, both decisive and overwhelming." President Valov stated.

However, he also stated that ultimately, he wishes to end the civil war in Ausferiland peacefully, and that Zolevskoyan military deployments are to ensure that the thread of spillovers can be dealt with quicker.

Meanwhile, VSO and allies have continued to back the Ausferilandian government. Granzerian prime minister Szabolcs Černý has seemingly brushed off Ausferilandian discrimination against ethnic minorities, stating that "the Ausferilandian people and government have every right to decide what best national solutions work for them, the Granzerian government has no right to dictate to Ausferiland how it should or should not treat the citizens that it represents." Granzery has maintained a military presence in the country to train and advise Ausferilandian armed forces, much to the dismay of the Zolevskoyan government. Nonetheless, many fear that any further escalations could sweep away any hope of a peaceful resolution to the civil war which has already claimed over 90,000 lives; most of which are civilians.

AFTER ACTION REPORT ON THE MASSACRE AT PLACHKOVSTI
HADNAGY ALIZ IMRENY
REPORTED AT 1450 18/11/2020

Before the massacre, F Company had spent the last two weeks with the Ausferilandian 15th Motor-Rifle Division, 3rd Battalion. Our primary missions were outlined clearly, as were our ROE. We were in the country to assist Ausferilandian soldiers and Ausferilandian civilians, and assist the ANDF in securing the secessionist regions. I swore an oath to uphold my orders and the institution of the Royal Defence Force, as did all my comrades, and we would never break from our mission or ROE. The incident in question began on the 16th of November, the town of Plachkovsti had a population of, I would estimate, around 1,200 or so, mostly but not entirely ethnically Zolevskoyan, it was perceived by us and our Ausferilandian associates that the town was heavily pro-South Khardzali.

The number of militants in the village itself was limited when we took the town, against the almost 600 of us, there was probably about 50 rebels, who either fled or surrendered when they saw the size of our forces. The first indication of what was to come was the Ausferilandian treatment of the militants we captured, in all about 20. After the captives had been executed, the ANDF took to rounding up the families of those militants who had been killed, they had their identification and state records, so the process was not too difficult, within a few hours about 30 wives (a number were widows) and in excess of 40 children were displayed ahead of the ANDF section commander and our own unit commander, Major Bela. We expected the Ausferilandians to take them into custody, perhaps interrogate them about their family connections.

Unfortunately we put too much faith in the Ausferilandian, they lined the women and children up while the section commander for the Ausferilandians declared them enemies of the state, and told the militant captives that they would witness the 'consequences of their actions'. At this point Major Bela chose to intervene, he approached the Ausferilandian commander, a tall but weaselly man called Krauss. The Major made it clear that the Royal Defence Force would not stand by punitive action taken against civilians or family members. Krauss ignored the Major, who promptly drew his weapon on the Ausferilandians. The Ausferilandians drew their weapons, we drew ours, I myself pointed my rifle at Krauss, and if you forgive the turn of phrase, a Meralan Standoff ensued.

After a tense few moments, Bela informed Krauss he would be returning to our lines, and that if the Ausferilandians fired upon the civilians, we would open fire upon them. Krauss acknowledged this, but told Bela that if he were to leave without ordering us to stand down, he would be fired upon. Bela called his bluff, and began walking back to our lines. Krauss did not hesitate to shoot him through the head. We returned fire, killing Krauss, and killing at least a handful of Ausferilandians. The Ausferilandians outnumbered us 3 to 1, and as the next highest ranking man in the unit, knowing that the Ausferilandians would have the advantage of air and artillery support on their side, ordered my men to retreat, although it pained me greatly to leave those civilians to their fate, and if in that position again, I may have stayed to fight for their lives.

Regardless, me and my men retreated, losing perhaps 6 of our fighters. I should note, as we left, I could hear the consistent pop of gunshots, from what I can only assume was the Ausferilandian National Defence Force slaughtering the civilians in the town. Regardless, we returned to our Python APCs, using our radio I relayed the situation to our commanding officer in the RDF, telling them Bela had been killed. They told me to surrender to the Ausferilandians, threatening to cut off any support to us if we continued our course of action, including any legal support we'd need against the Ausferilandian government. Thus, I surrendered the Company to the mercy of the Ausferilandians

The report, leaked to the public by some unknown RDF member, caused an uproar in Granzery. The fact that the RDF had so callously disregarded the rules of war, the lives of civilians, and even the lives of their own troops, all in the name of realpolitik, disgusted most at home in Granzery. From anti-war advocates to antifascists, to pro-veteran groups and even nationalist groups grew in uproar against this betrayal from the RDF. Protests erupted across the nation, and the RDF in Ausferiland and across Granzery have gone on strike in response. Just days before a federal election, the situation is a complete disaster for the Granzerian Renaissance Party. Prime Minister Černý went on national television to say:

"We must not jump to any rash positions which might weaken Granzery on the world stage. What occurred in Ausferiland was incredibly unfortunate, and an inquiry must be made into the situation and bring those responsible for this betrayal to justice, however this is not a fast process. I'm sorry to say, but this process can last weeks or even months. Indicting war criminals can be very difficult, but the advantage of a report like this, is that it makes the reprisals that much easier."

Despite this statement, protests and strikes across the country have not dissipated. Gendarmerie and Local police have been completely overwhelmed with the volume of demonstration, and the situation looks to be rapidly spiralling out of control.

11/19/2020 - Protests Sweep Across Granzery as Leaked Document Proves Ausferilandian War Crimes

As Ausferilandian forces begin to make gains against rebel forces, a recently leaked after-action report of the Granzerian military, deployed to assist and advise ANDF forces, has brought to light a massacre against an ethnic Zolevskoyan village. Despite attempts to intervene and prevent the massacre, Ausferilandian forces began to fire upon forces of of the Granzerian military, killing 7. Just as the tragedy came to light, the already tense political climate within Granzery came to a boiling point as protests began just a week before federal elections, which the moderate Republican Socialist Party has dominated polls.

However, outrage has especially been seen within Zolevskoy. Shortly after news of the leaks came to the country, social media users quickly voiced their support for ethnic Zolevskoyans in Ausferiland, with "#SaveSouthKardzhali" trending on *whateverthehellourtwitteris*. Government officials were especially outraged, with some more extreme politicians calling for a full-scale intervention into Ausferiland. President Nedyalko Valov especially had harsh words for Ausferilandian president Petko Alexander, stating that "the mistreatment and, as of late, ethnic cleansing of Zolevskoyans in Ausferiland and South Kardzhali only serves to further ruin Petko's reputation on the world stage." Although he made no comment ont he chances of a military intervention, he did suggest that he would do whatever is necessary to stop any further crimes in the region.

Concerns of even more war crimes against ethnic Zolevskoyans have especially grown after the military force of Ausferiland have begun to make significant gains against the breakaway state of South Kardzhali. Fears of a refugee crisis have also mounted, which has been the main reason some have called for president Valov to intervene in the war.

As we know, the forces of Ausferiland have reached the gates of the South Kardzhali capital of Glaz. Any day now, they could break through and take over the city, making our country's efforts to support our people fruitless. With Granzery in turmoil, they are unlikely to intervene. Now is the time for us to come in. At 0300 local time on December 2nd, Operation Orgia will commence to expel Ausferilandian forces from South Kardzhali, in a massive combined arms operation with the strength of our ground, air, and naval forces.

As soon as the clock strikes 3 AM, the 1st Tank Division and 101st Mechanized Division of the Western military district will cross the border, at the same time as the 2nd Tank Division, 1st Aviation Brigade, and 105th Mechanized Division of the Southern military district. Air force squadrons to be taking part in this operation consist of the 101st, 105th, 116th, 106th tactical fighter squadrons, 69th attack squadron, Unit 555, 120th squadron, 166th and 200 squadrons, and other support forces to assist their efforts.

For the first phase of the operation, a barrage of Tochka ballistic missiles will be launched at strategic Ausferilandian targets such as communication infrastructure and logistical forces, with focus on damaging forces around Glaz. SB-07 missiles will also be fired towards ANDF command infrastructure and airbases to inflict further damage. Simultaneously, the air forces will begin a SEAD operation against Ausferilandian air defenses. The 555th Electronic Warfare Unit will jam ANDF radars to allow Zolevskoyan fighters to destroy as many air defenses as possible, with the help of other defenses such as decoys. Although SAM batteries will be the focus, some fighters will penetrate further to bomb the Weferlingen and Fortese air force bases. Once the effectiveness of ANDF air defenses is crippled, fighters will then begin focus on striking ANDF ground forces, to halt their advance on Glaz and provide air cover for Zolevskoyan ground forces.

As the air force begins their operations, our ground forces will begin to move into South Kardzhali. Squadrons of Lu-25 attack jets and attack helicopters will provide support for forces moving into South Kardzhali. While the 1st Tank Division moves west to push back ANDF forces heading east, elements of the 101st Mechanized Division will move towards the west flank of Glaz, while the rest moves east of the 1st TD in support of their operations. Meanwhile in the east, the 2nd Tank Division will immediately begin moving towards Glaz, while the 105th Mechanized Division moves to support anti-government forces in Glaz. Once ANDF forces are forced to retreat from the city, our forces will begin moving to restore the lines carved out by rebel forces at their height, as well as occupying the city of Cham. As soon as these objectives are achieved, our government will propose a ceasefire with Ausferiland and make no further gains. If Ausferiland refuses such a deal, the next objective will be the Weferling air force base, as well as the remainder of northwestern Ausferiland.

Some may be shocked by our sudden operations after decades of a defensive posture. But if we do not act, our people in South Kardzhali may be subject to even more violence at the hands of the ANDF and their lapdogs. We trust that the men and women of the RZAF will show the world that we will not lay dormant anymore.

02/12/2020 - BREAKING: Zolevskoyan forces begin attacks against Ausferilandian army

Just an hour ago, relentless explosions from bombs and artillery of the Republic of Zolevskoy Armed Forces launched a military campaign against Ausferilandian forces. The Zolevskoyan ministry of defense confirmed that a massive combined arms assault, codenamed Operation Orgiya, was underway.

Citizens living in the breakaway state of South Kardzhali reported on social media of massive Zolevskoyan armored columns moving south. Although there are many conflicting reports of the total casualties so far, some estimate that at least hundreds on both sides have been wounded or killed since the beginning of Zolevskoyan bombardments. Already, footage of fierce battles have made their way to social media, showing the

“Everyone around me woke up to look at the explosions in the distance, and they all seemed horrified.” Nicolaas Poelakker, a war correspondent explained over phone from the town of Glaz. The town sits north of Cham and is the current focal point of the bloody war in Ausferiland.

“There weren't many explosions within the city, but there were tons which landed near ANDF positions. Already the civilians are taking cover in their basements or other shelters they can find. The forces that were near this town moved out half an hour ago to try and defend against the surprise attack, but nobody has heard anything back from them yet.”

The Zolevskoyan president has previously made it clear that he will defend Ausfer-Zolevskoyans at any cost, and has clearly shown the world his willingness to use force to ensure such a goal. More information on the outbreak of the Zolev-Ausferilandian war will be posted as it comes in.
