,they scream, as the remaining beasts begin ramming towards the enemy...

The group moves to encircle the horde, attempting to thin out the beasts. If they all charge in different directions, they will be disoriented and isolated, and easier to hunt down as a result.

These creatures must be stupid- they've played right into the warlord's trap. As they charge outward at their targets, they are spread out from each other. They draw blood, sure, and several riders are cut down from their mounts. But far too few to save them now.

The warriors turn inward in their charge. They've encircled these creatures, drawn them out, and cut them off from each other. Now it truly is little more than hunting big game.

Many of the beasts begin dropping like flies...but the stamping of manh dark hooves may be heard in the distance softly under the cries of warriors, and roars of beasts

Whatever is coming, there are not enough warriors to fight. And so it is time to leave.
The slaughter complete, the warriors prepare to depart. They pile their dead and light the pyre ablaze before riding hard for the south.

They had won the battle, but the war is another matter entirely.

only a few of the beasts from before survive, and soon enough dissapear into the wilderness entirely, but the forces far off are not so easily dispersed.

the deepest darkest wails and screams, mostly resembling that of a sword being scraped against a rock, but 1000 times higher pitched could be heard far away, behind the rolling hills...

It is most certainly time to go. Their welcome has expired.

But that pyre was not simply an act of honor for the dead.
The grass of the steppe is dry.
And the wind is to the north.

This blaze will start a much larger one. And the oncoming forces will have to contend with a fire they cannot outrun.

They'd better have damn good health insurance.

the steppe grasses quickly light on fire as the land behind them lights up with a blaze of red, like a wall shielding them from the enemy...

a dark figure can barely be seen as it appears from out of the fire....unharmed...




then another.....








and another........










and another.......

The fire seemed to have been, well, less effective than expected.

But it at least served one purpose- the smoke obscured from the oncoming horde the retreating warriors. And by the time they cleared the fire line, the only evidence of the battle was a blazing pyre and the scattered corpses of two hundred beasts of war.

as these dark figures on even darker, what seem to be horses, keep appearing out of the fire, they all stop once they emerge, and seem to line up orderly...

These new foes seem delighted by the sight of their dead fellows. Well, that was unexpected.

the bird with the man on his horse begins shaking violently and it's eyes begin darkening...

He looks at the bird with concern. Good things never happen when bird suffers.

It's mouth slightly opens and it murmurs out in a dark echoey voice...

"The will of King Kruul will not be so easily broken...

The bird coughs up some black goo onto the mans hand...but he feels some cold small item within the goo....

it turns back to normal as it's eyes brighten up again to look average, but it still seems sad...

the black goo in his hand is tarry and strange, but the strange small item within it is cool and icy...

The man pokes at the thing with his finger, for whatever reason. Don't you know what a bad idea that is? It could be toxic! Or it could, I don't know, be hard to wash out?

The goo begins to suddenly vanish, leaving a small but strange Amulet can be seen...

Oh, boy, that's not unsettling at all!

He looks at the amulet, shivers, looks at it again, and in one motion just yeets it into the field. It has to be cursed; such things are unwise to keep around.

The bird looks up at him and makes what looks to be a smile, with it having a beak and all.
Then the man hears something finally NOT sinister sounding in his head as the bird looks at him.

"You made a good decision..."

The man smiles about how genre-savvy he is and then rides off with the rest of the force and the bird in tow, as I can't think of a good conclusion to write here.
