They Refuse

Today, we have heard that our first evacuation aircraft are beginning to depart from Shafiristan. They are loaded, mostly, with noblewomen from that country, which is now facing the threat of a Communist revolution. Most of the noblemen from Shafiristan have refused to come along. Out of millions of noblemen who are now facing the threat of revolutionary violence, only a small minority have boarded planes to Allanea – a place where they know well they would be free and safe, a place so intensely free that several Errinunderan Communist agents once literally went mad and died upon witnessing our society. Yet there are now untold numbers who refuse this safety, who are refuse our succor – purely so they can stand and fight for their freedom.

Will they win? This is not for me to say. True, reports suggest that so far these noblemen outnumber the rebels, but these may prove false, and the situation may change. I am not a general, nor am I an analyst. I am but a poet. What I know, however, is this: the reasons these men refuse our succor and our protection are reason enough for us to provide them with our assistance.

Here are men, most of them out of uniform, who are facing a lethal threat. They know that any of them can be slain for merely who they are. Even should the 'revolution' fail, it is wholly possible that a bullet or a hand-grenade can kill any one of them at any time. Should it succeed, there will be a red day and a black night for Shafiristan.

We have seen the Red Darkness fall on many a country. We know what happens when it falls. So do these men. Yet they do not flee. They send their loved ones to safety, and themselves remain in their palaces, their mansions, with service rifles and heirloom shotguns, with their grandfather's sword or their father's hunting dagger. These men are defiant in the face of violence – and in that way, they are free.

What is more Allanean than to stand, with rifle in hand, in defiance of your would-be oppressors? Perhaps these men will win, or perhaps they will lose. They cannot know, and neither can we.

There is one thing, however, that they wish to make certain. That regardless of what happens in the end, first there will be a fight.

We must help them bring about this certainty.

Oren Ilyinsky was a poet. He was not privy to all of the secrets of the state, and thus he did not know of the dark shapes, more quiet than even the sea itself, moving inexorably towards Shafiristan's shores.

The Kyundaoan ground forces heard the news that the majority of male Sharifistani nobles are staying behind to fend off the approaching Communists. The Kyundaoans knew too well that the nobles themselves can't defeat a heavily armed group of over 5,000. Naturally, they decided to spread out so they could cover as much ground as humanly possible. This was a high tech anti-Communist force of around 500,000; no Communist in their right mind would dare go up against such an army.

Some time afterwards, a group of Communist spies was captured by Kyundaoan troops. The Communists were tied behind their backs and dragged to a Kyundaoan officer. They had no weapons on them, having been forcibly disarmed by the Kyundaoans.

Soldier: These are the spies we caught.

Officer: Torture them for information. I don't care how you do it.

The Communist spies were driven to a nearby prison, where they would be tortured in ways that, upon seeing these methods, would give you PTSD. Inside the prison, they were taken to a secret chamber guarded by Kyundaoan and Sharifistani soldiers.

The Sharifistani soldiers ask "What is going on in those chambers?!"Torture is one thing the Sharifistanis oppose, despite their flaws.
Some of them hear the screams of the prisoners and intend to liberate them.

Some time later, several armed Kyundaoan soldiers suddenly burst out of the room. One of them had a written note in hand as the tortured and traumatized Communists were dragged out of the secret chamber. The soldier with the written note immediately turns to the Kyundaoan soldier who was outside the room.

Soldier: We have the enemy camp's location. Send this to the general now.

The other soldier takes the note and follows his new orders. The rest take the Communists outside the prison, where several crosses were prepared. These crosses were two and a half times the height of an average Kyundaoan man and had two horizontal bars of equal length. The Communists' arms were tied to the upper bars and their lower legs were tied to the lower bar. The crosses were raised until they were upright. The Communists were going to slowly die up there and at least ten Kyundaoan soldiers were standing guard, ready to shoot anyone who got anywhere near the crosses.

The soldier who left the prison with the written note from earlier reaches the general and hands him the note.

The general takes the note and reads it. Pleased to hear that the torture worked, he gives the camp's location to the Kyundaoan Army and orders them to surround it. A one-sided bloodbath was about to happen.

Emperor Haytham Sung, upon hearing of the Sharifistani military's complaints of the Kyundaoan Army's methods against the the Communists, decided to make an announcement on the matter. His suspicions were confirmed; the Mohammedans would be uncooperative to where they could be secretly supporting Communism. Moments later, the camera was ready. The Emperor took to the microphone.

Emperor Sung: "Our government has been receiving complaints from the Sharifistani military over the methods our troops have been using against the Communists, namely the use of torture and crucifixion. We offered the Mohammedan assistance in the fight against the Communists and a sheer lack of gratitude is how they repay us. There are conspiracy theories out there stating that the Mohammedan cult is in league with the Red Menace. Those conspiracy theories appear to be true, the Sharifistani military in general being an example. Because of this, we are pulling out of Sharifistan entirely. The Sharifistani military shall receive no support in any capacity, it shall be designated a terror group and it shall be treated as such."

On the Sharifistani coastline and in Sharifistani airports, the Kyundaoan Army leaves for home. They had heard the Emperor's announcement. The Kyundaoans who tortured and crucified a few Communists (and shot the Sharifistani soldiers who approached them) were leaving as well, furious that the Sharifistanis would be just like the stereotypical Mohammedan: ungrateful bastards. It took a while for the Kyundaoan forces to leave given their numbers were in the hundreds of thousands, but they all leave as sworn enemies of Sharifistan.

About a day later in Kyundao, the last of the Kyundaoan troops arrived.

The Free Kingdom is perplexed by the erratic behavior of the government of Kyundao. We are informed that, apparently, that His Majesty, Emperor Sung of Kyundao, has ordered the evacuation of his country’s entire contingent from Shafiristan in response to the Shafiristani government’s complaints about the use of torture and crucifixion by Kyundao forces. In response to the Shafiristani government complaining about those activities, Emperor Sung has now declared Shafiristan a terrorist state.

Now, as it is well known, the Free Kingdom of Allanea does sometimes make use of some extreme execution methods against violators of human rights, slavers, and terrorists. We make no apologies for this fact. However, three points must be made which are important in this international dispute: first, that Shafiristan committed or endorsed no acts of terror against Kyundao, and merely expressed concerns about the tactics of Kyundao’s forces. Second, though it’s likely that all those captured by the Kyuandao force were indeed actually terrorists, obviously Shafiristan’s government is concerned about the torture of its citizens – who may or may not be guilty – by a foreign armed force without any monitoring by Shafiristani authorities. Third, and most importantly, a military force operating in counterinsurgency support of a foreign government is a guest of that government. No matter how well-armed, and how necessary the presence, it exists upon the host nation’s sufferance. It must abide by the rules set for it by the host nation – or be viewed as an occupying invader.

Meanwhile we commend the Sultan of Shafiristan for the wise move of abolishing some key censorship restrictions. Not only is this a difficult decision to make during a civil war, but also a powerful demonstration of the Shafiristani crown’s moral supremacy over the rebels.

The Communist rebels seek to murder the monarch and the nobles.

The Shafiristani government rejects the armed support of Kyundao to protect the Communists from being tortured.

The Communist rebels seek to take over the government and exterminate the opposition.

The Shafiristani monarch protects their rights to be free from censorship, torture, and cruel and unusual punishments.

From which we learn of the Sultan’s total and absolute moral superiority over his foes, whether foreign and domestic.

The Senate of the Free Kingdom of Allanea is now debating an extended support package for Shafiristan, and the King of Allanea has just signed a check of one billion New Dornalian dollars to the Shafiristani government.

That is our opinion.

"Yes, Communist rebellion, i presume?", General Fokin replied.
"Affirmative. Shall i call President?"
"Yes."

Sometime later, his staff are dialling direct president line with secure connection. After some minute, the call is connected.

"Good Morning, President. I have a conversation about situation in Sharifistan. Shall we do that?", General Fokin asking first
"Sure."
"Are you know about rebellion in Sharifistan ?"
"Yes, i know very much."
"So, we have headline in some foreign news say: 'Emperor Sung: Mohammedan cult is friend of the Red Menace', 'Mohammedan cult conspiracy is true!' or something like that!", General Fokin say with high tone.
"Fine, the rebel communist is Maoist or Stalinist way?"
"There no information about that, but probably they are more likely radical one. We shall search them."
"What if the communist hunt our citizen in Sharifistan?"
"God bless the good Ikherians and Sharifistanians, shall we intervene in Sharifistan?"
"I very agree, as that news headline and radicalist communist threat danger our people and Sharifistanians."
"Oh, President, as usual, ask the parliament leader first."
