Bobrovka Village,
Altai Mountains, East Kazakhstan Region,
The Kazakh Republic.

11:30AM GMT +6
June 8th, 2019

Abduwali Sayrami slung his rugged Kalashnikov over his shoulder as he began approaching the outskirts of the village of Bobrovka, a small village surrounded by the expansive Altai Mountains which extended through Eastern Kazakhstan, the Xinjiang Republic, Mongolia and Russia. Following Abduwali were eight men who were also armed and primarily Uyghur like himself and represented only a fraction of a larger mujahideen compromised of Uyghurs, Chechens, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Afghans and Turkmens. Who operated primarily in the East Kazakhstan Region and the neighboring Xinjiang Republic and had once been several separate jihadist factions from across Central Asia who unified themselves into one entity upon pledging allegiance to Al-Shams in 2015. Much of what is referred to as the 'Turkic Jaish al-Fatah' or Turkic Army of Conquest, live and operate within the Altai Mountain region that specifically spreads into the neighboring Xinjiang Republic. The factions that comprise of TJaF have been operating independently of each other since the mid to late 1990s and have since created a strong presence in Xinjiang and in the East Kazakhstan Region. A prolonged insurgency has existed even before the formation of the Al-Shams linked TJaF and after the formation the mujahideen had been able to recruit new fighters primarily Kazakh youth who had harsh upbringings in the former Soviet Republic. The current Kazakh and Xinjiang Republics who both maintained majority Islamist populations were very much ripe for TJaF and Al-Shams influence and were the perfect breeding grounds for extremism.

Abduwali and his eight Uyghur fighters promptly entered Bobrovka from which they walked in the open as with the relative seclusion of the village its self their was no real Kazakh Republic authority to stop them. The village was home to over 60 people most being native Kazakhs who lived the rural lifestyle as their ancestors before them did years ago. The village market was Abduwali's first stop as they needed to get supplies that they couldn't get themselves out in the remoteness of the Altai Mountains. Certain food stuffs, pots and pans along with clothing were usually items that local militants such as Abduwali's would come to these villages to acquire besides the fact that they also served as the village's protection as the residents were all adherents to Sunni Islam and always welcomed mujahideen fighters in with open arms.

"Peace be upon you" A villager remarked as Abduwali and his men passed by and now walked up to one of the cluster of houses which was fairly easy to spot as a black flag with Arabic writing was hung just outside. He entered on his own as the rest of his men stayed outside talking among themselves and inspecting their weapons. The inside of the house was remarkably clean for how old most houses in the village were and in the living room was a fire place and on the floor a prayer mat that was used for prayer. Sitting crisscrossed on the floor wielding a small cup of locally brewed tea was Tahir Hojaniasov who looked up at Abduwali with a smile and gestured him over to a small table that had a tea kettle and a spare cup.

"Peace be upon you, brother. Come, come sit and have tea with me" Hojaniasov said as Abduwali having already slipped off his shoes and placed them off to the side joined him at the table. Hot tea was served into the spare cup in which Abduwali took the cup blowing on it softly. Tahir Hojaniasov was a native Kazakh and part of the Turkic Army of Conquest who operated in Eastern Kazakhstan who was now handling the training of over a dozen teenagers in Islamic theology and military training. Hojaniasov had served in the Kazakh Army in Soviet times and now used his experience to train the new generation of TJaF, an older gentleman by far as he was over half way through his fifties but due to his lifestyle and clean dieting he was still just as strong and capable. A convert to Islam after the dissolution of the Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan, he had originally joined a mujahideen outfit in these very mountains who were mostly Uyghurs, however now they were all part of TJaF and more so Al-Shams.

"Have your travels been well?" Hojaniasov asked as the two drank tea as Arabic nasheeds played at a low volume from somewhere in the house. Abduwali shifted himself before nodding his head several times to the question. He and his men and made the short journey down from their base camp further in the Altai Mountains from which they sometimes traversed to get into the neighboring Xinjiang Republic. His most recent journey into the Xinjiang Republic saw him meeting up with another TJaF outfit and participating in hit and run attacks against Xinjiang security forces.

"They've been very well, Brother. And how are the students? Are they ready to begin their life of Jihad with us in the way of Allah?" Abduwali asked in return as Hojaniasov sipped his tea once more before setting it down. Twelve teenagers ranging from 14-18 years old had volunteered and were allowed by their parents to join Hojaniasov in learning the way of a true Islamic warrior. Over a month of studying the Qu'ran and receiving basic military training in the form of physical fitness and firearms training, he believed that they were as ready as could be to join the Jihad.

"They've done very well. It has been a month since I have started teaching them and all of them are fast learners. God willing they are ready to join us in our cause, brother." He remarked as Abduwali nodded. The teenagers would soon be put to the test once they were outfitted with gear and firearms for themselves. The rise of the Caliphate of Rum by the Jund Al-Rashid had raised morale significantly among the entirety of the Turkic Army of Conquest and were now in the process of training new recruits and beginning a reinvigorated jihad against their enemies.

Zyryanosk,
East Kazakhstan Region,
The Kazakh Republic.

2:45PM GMT +6
June 17th 2019

"Are you close to arriving at the target, Madiyar?" Bekzhan Fomenkoev the appointed Emir in East Kazakhstan for the Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh said over the radio. Fomenkoev a half Kazakh and half Russian was originally part of one of the founding groups that because of Al-Shams arranged the creation of the Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh. A shura council within the new organization voted and decided that he be a appointed Emir over the Kazakhstan area of operations for the group. Bekzhan had grown up in the East Kazakhstan Region and had served in the former Kazakhstan Soviet Army in 1979 until 1985 during the out break of the Kazakh Civil War. During the beginning of hostilities by anti-communist forces which included Islamist factions, Fomenkoev who was an adherent Sunni Muslim defected and began his career as an insurgent. Having rose to the rank of Sergeant Major with experience in company level tactics he proved himself to be a skillful tactician and has always led operations himself in the region. Today was no different as he was coordinating a martyrdom operation from the safety of a safe house somewhere in Zyryanosk as an eighteen year old by the name of Madiyar drove a van packed with fertilizer based explosives in the back.

"I am. God willing I will make the kafir suffer and I will see jannah soon." Madiyar said over the radio as he was coming upon the last street leading towards a local police station. The martyrdom operation had been planned as a response to recent arrests of what had been deemed as 'radical Islamists' and were affiliated with Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh. Those that were arrested were mostly members of the Islamic Party of Kazakhstan which was a fringe political party advocating for better treatment of Muslims and the basis for the establishment of some form of Sharia law. It had been accused of having ties to radical Islamists like the Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh but all accusations were denied. However the Service of Internal Security were able to covertly find links between the two which began law enforcement scrutiny against the Islamic Party and suspected members of the Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh. The local police station was in view as the van drove swiftly into the parking lot before swerving towards the building's inner fence as Madiyar detonated the van's explosives unleashing a powerful explosion upon the station. The sheer explosion was able to tear through the fence along with the side of the entire building along with the sheer shock wave shattering nearby windows and the explosion being felt from blocks away.

"He's done it. Peace be upon him he is with Allah now." Fomenkoev said before taking his finger off the talk button as others elsewhere celebrated the successful suicide bombing over the radio. First responders and local Police soon arrived at the scene of the bombing with priority being to battle the fire that had enveloped the part of the building that had been demolished in the explosion. It would be another hour before emergency services could start to search the ravaged building for survivors in which some had already emerged from the other half of the building. An investigation into the cause of the explosion was already underway and law enforcement would soon have their answer as from eye witnesses and tests taken, it was concrete that it was a suicide bombing. The bombing had taken the lives of over 17 police officers including several civilians who had happened to be inside when the van detonated. Further investigation would be taken over by the Service of Internal Security that were already looking at the suspected perpetrators being the Turkic Jaish Al-Fateh.

Semey, Kazakhstan | Dolon Air Base
50° 32' 26" N, 79° 12' 7" E

Amidst the seeming expanse of nothingness known only as "the steppe" sat Dolon Air Base and, fifty miles away, the eastern Kazakh city of Semey, home to a surprisingly large number of people, 300,000 or so as per the last census estimate. Split by the Irtysh River, the city was modernizing with the changing world though it had hardly given up on its 238-year history. It was also a battleground in the rising insurgency in Eastern Kazakhstan where Islamic fundamentalism had taken root. Successive administrations in Nur-Sultan had been unsuccessful in wiping it out, despite their efforts. That was part of the reason why Dolon Air Base was leased by the Imperial Layartebian Air Force and why this sizeable deployment of Layartebian forces existed. It was all in the fight against Al-Shams and their allies, which in this area happened to be the Turkic Jadish Al-Fateh (TJaF) or the Turkic Army of Conquest.

The TJaF was a sizeable foe with manpower estimates anywhere from a low of five thousand to a high of twenty thousand. They swore allegiance to Al-Shams and called Al-Judhr (The Root) in Pakistan their allies. The Empire had already had several run-ins with Al-Judhr, which fought against Britannian integration of Pakistan. It was Al-Judhr that provided Mullah Shahir Alhasan Najjar with safety and security. The former leader of Al-Shams' Shura Council had been assassinated in a joint Britannian-Layartebian raid in 2016. Al-Judhr's forces suffered greatly that evening but they'd failed in their mission to protect him.

When Layartebian forces first scouted Dolon in 2000, they found an air base in great disrepair, having been abandoned nearly a decade earlier. Yet, despite the neglect, the runway was intact. Like most Soviet Kazakh air bases, the runway had been constructed out of precast, prestressed concrete slabs. They certainly held up better than the asphalt-paved runways in the Empire and battle damage repair was considered just a process of taking out the damaged blocks and putting in new ones. Air bases typically kept them on hand for such instances, being able to replace as many as one hundred and thirty slabs per crane per shift. This of course made the air base ideal for Layartebian usage and the Kazakh and Layartebian governments worked on the finer details and requirements such so that in 2002, an agreement was inked. Layartebian personnel arrived mid-year and by the end of 2002, Dolon Air Base was capable of supporting a limited, Layartebian presence. Within just three years, that presence was expanded and by 2015, Dolon Air Base hardly resembled its former self.

Now, the Layartebian presence was sizeable with nearly 2,000 men present in a vast and sprawling city centered on the flight line and its 4,000-meter long runway. It was home to the 909th Air Expeditionary Wing, which consisted of ten detachments from squadrons based in Layarteb. These detachments rotated every three years and the present makeup of the 909th Air Expeditionary Wing included twelve each of the A-10C Thunderbolt II, the F-26A Vulture, and the F-28B Viper. A detachment of eight MQ-9A Reaper drones were also present, making up the primarily combat units of the 909th AEW. Supporting them were four MC-12W Guardrail X aircraft, eight C-130J Super Hercules transports, four EF-26B Vulture electronic warfare aircraft, two EC-130J Compass Call II electronic warfare aircraft, two EQ-4B Global Hawks, and eight HH-60G Pave Hawk search and rescue helicopters. All told, there were seventy-two aircraft deployed there along with the necessarily mission support, maintenance, and medical groups supporting them. A security group had been deployed as well though initially it had only consisted of a single infantry company. Now, because the air base attracted the attention of the TJaF, the deployment ballooned to two motorized and one mechanized infantry company as well as two air defense companies, one with eight surface-to-air systems and one with eight C-RAM systems.

From Dolon Air Base, Layartebian aircraft and drones operated in support of the Kazakh government's fight against TJaF and their allies in Eastern Kazakhstan. Naturally, this meant that the base attracted the attention of TJaF. With nothing around the air base, TJaF insurgents could do little against the base effectively without exposing themselves. Their initial tactics had been to take pot shots with sniper rifles from long range, firing a few rounds from the ground at night and then hightailing it away before Layartebian sentries could respond. Then they started to lob mortars, never more than a half-dozen at a time and never aimed. These caused quite a bit of panic initially but the rounds normally fell short. Only two rounds had ever hit the tarmac and only one had hit the runway in all of the hundreds that they'd fired.

Hamstrung by rules of engagement set by the Kazakh government and the Ministry of Defense in Layarteb City, security personnel found themselves unable to respond to these attacks how they wanted. However, they'd quickly figured out a way to fight back in some fashion. Since most of the attacks occurred during the night, security personnel had taken to maintaining a small fleet of light drones equipped with thermal cameras. Through these cameras, they could often find insurgents encroaching upon their perimeter. Since they couldn't respond back in kind, they'd taken to equipping the drones with a variety of payloads. Initially, they dropped smoke grenades that were crudely rigged to the drones. That only worked so long before TJaF started showing up with gas masks. Security personnel changed tactics by equipping the drones with M-80s. Soldiers had no problems getting their hands on the fireworks since they were often used by the military to simulate explosives. Dropping these had caused quite a stir amongst the TJaF insurgents and more than a few were injured - albeit superficially - by shrapnel from the devices. A few times, the M-80s were tied to full cans of Coca-Cola and dropped, adding extra fragmentation while still being marginally lethal. Insofar as all of the recorded attacks showed, none of the TJaF insurgents had been seriously wounded. Surely TJaF would be changing tactics again since C-RAM had effectively neutralized their mortar attacks.

The C-RAM units were ingenious. Since the retirement of the 20-millimeter caliber, the navy had thousands of Phalanx CIWS systems lying in storage, which were then appropriated to the army and the air force for use in base security against artillery fire. At night, the long stream of tracers from these guns as they fired at over 4,500 rounds per minute made for quite a show. The Layartebians had more ammo than the insurgents had mortars, or so it seemed from the repeated attacks that the Layartebians at Dolon endured. Eventually though, TJaF would get lucky and their attacks on Dolon would migrate away from being a petty nuisance and into a more direct threat. If that happened, the ROE were likely to shift and TJaF would find itself within the crosshairs of more than just firecrackers and smoke grenades.
