The Jade Empire cracks down on Catholicism [FT, IC, TG]

Open to all but telegram me for entry before posting. No god-modding etc all the usual rules. Enjoy!

The Holy Precincts, Aeterna City, Alejandra District, Laptev
The early hours of the morning

Tai-I Aoi Yoshida gripped the hilt of her hikatana as she marched steadily towards the wide front steps of the Holy Precincts, the home of the San Alejandran Catholic Church and official residence of Pope Absolvo III. The Church had once been the most powerful religious institution on Laptev, but that had been a century ago or more and now it was a tolerated minority when ranged against the towering triple alliance of Jade Shinto, the godless Imaginariumese to the north and the dark rituals of Ystovia to the east.

Now, however, the Church had finally outlived the patience of the Jade Empire. A JIAN investigation had discovered proof positive that the Church was funding and abetting the Resistenza di San Alejandro in their futile and violent war of attrition against the Jade Empire, and the Jade Empress herself had decreed that the Holy See must fall.

With the professional Jade Marines deployed at crucial spots around the city to handle the inevitable uprising that would occur, the local forces of the feudal nobility had been mustered to storm the Holy Precincts and several other churches. Aoi Yoshida was a senior member of the retinue of the mixed race overlord of Alejandra District, Fujin-Daimyo Terranova and had been given responsibility for this night's primary objective. At Yoshida's back were nearly six hundred members of the Imperial Jade Guard, conscript ashigaru militia armed with everything from energy lances and crude .50 calibre bolt-action railguns to the reliable old Burnham M2A6 assault rifle. Barely trained and poorly armoured, they were however more than a match for the ceremonial Barsus Guard who protected the Holy Precincts. Barsus had ceased to exist long ago, and these few half-trained policemen in their ceremonial white and orange tunics were the last remnants of a once great Empire, and the two men laid aside their ceremonial spears and reached for their laser sidearms. Yoshida drew her hikatana and ignited it, casting a red glow over the leading ranks of the Imperial Jade Guard. Among the throng, other samurai officers did the same. Yoshida called repeatedly for her soldiers to hold their fire and the hugely outnumbered Barsus Guardsmen, sweating beneath their steel helmets, did not fire the blaster pistols they had aimed at the huge crowd. Yoshida stopped barely four feet away from them, her followers clattering to a halt behind her and raising a variety of weapons, so that nearly forty muzzles were weaving patterns across the two Barsus Guardsmen's chests.

She stared at them for three heartbeats, willing them to surrender, and then shrugged and spoke a single calm word of command. Moments later she was stepping over their corpses as her soldiers crowded after her, their weapons still smoking. They spread out, gunshots and laserfire echoing through the ancient halls as cries of outrage and pain marked the progress of the Imperial Jade Guard through the buildings. Yoshida led a core of several dozen warriors, including many heavily-armoured samurai. They clattered through the Chapel of St. Mark, dispatching three more Barsus Guards and a pair of minor priests who got in the way, before one of the warriors kicked in a small oak door that led to a flight of spiral stairs. He rushed up the stairs and was promptly thrown backwards, blood spurting from a bullet hole in his chest, but Yoshida pressed upwards in her shielded armour and gutted the brightly-liveried guard who was defending the staircase, the crackle and hiss of evaporating blood drowning out his gasp of pain as he tumbled past her and down the stairs.

Emerging at the top, she found a small but well-appointed bedroom with an ancient four-poster bed, many bookcases and thick drapery lining the walls. An elderly man in a plain white nightgown cowered in one corner, beside a bureau with a small decanter of wine on top of it. His eyes widened as the Jade warriors spilled into his room, his mouth working silently as he waved his hands, trying to brace himself on the desk.

"Bertoldo Vignone, you are under arrest for treason against the Jade Empire. Come with us," said the samurai woman in scarlet and white. She had just captured Pope Absolvo III.

Outside the Cathedral

Mercatusian marines were waiting outside the Cathedral, led by the well-known tracker and sniper Dzenan Petrovic. The Mercatusian military had long wanted Absolvo III executed for drug dealing and aiding an enemy. As well as that, Petrovic had a personal grudge with Tai-I Aoi Yoshida, the warrior who had captured the now-criminal pope and was heading out of the Cathedral. He kept the details a complete secret from anyone, threatening anyone who pressed him on the subject with a rifle pointed at their face. In Mercatusian Formal, he said to his 6 troops over radio, "When that asshole and the pope emerge, shoot out their knees. You are free to kill any troops she has with her. If you kill either Absolvo or Yoshida, I'll shoot you without hesitation, understood?" They all nodded, their black-visored stealth helmets showing no emotion. They were armed with T106 Caseless 8mm Assault Rifles and nerve agent grenades. The rifle was capable of putting down a troop in a single shot, leaving a nasty, gaping hole. When armed with hollow points, people have gotten their arms blown off or their heads were shredded. These troops knew how to handle the heavy recoil of the improved chemical propellant, which was favored over rail guns because of the heavy capacitors required to fire a rail gun. Petrovic held his 12mm Special Purpose Sniper System (SPSS) at the ready, waiting for his targets to emerge.

Only 30 minutes later did Yoshida, Absolvo, and her troops emerge from the Cathedral. In Formal, Petrovic shouted, "Fire on the entrance!" A hail of 8mm Caseless hollow points rained down from behind cover, and the noise without ear protection would have rendered someone deaf within the first 3 seconds of firing. Petrovic was quickly moving, zigzagging to avoid any return fire. Through his scope, he spotted Yoshida. Let's see what you'll do if I shoot your leg." He said to himself. He intended to wound her and the pope so he could finish them when the battle was over. The only reason he carried a handgun was to execute people, to make them feel defeated when his victims and targets died. He gave the trigger a gentle squeeze, and 3 ounces of armor-piercing boron carbide escaped the barrel.

Piazza della Pigna, Aeterna
Aoi Yoshida

As she stepped out of the front of the Holy Precincts, Yoshida felt something like a horse kicking her leg. There was a loud crackle and a bright yellow-orange flare as the shields of her gosoku armour absorbed the hit, flaring into quiescence as they overloaded. Bruised but intact, she instantly ducked behind a vast pillar, her HUD lighting up to show her the rough direction of the incoming fire. Behind her, several samurai and ashigaru were caught in the hail of gunfire, three ashigaru going down instantly as the others scattered for cover and began to return fire.

She turned to see the Pope, cuffed, in the doorway, and waved the soldiers escorting him back inside, then turned on her short-range comms...

Captain Agamemmnon Aeneas
In charge of Delta Company, Jade Marines from the 1544th Regiment, Captain Aeneas was a stolid, muscular man with a pointed black beard hidden by the corinthian-style helmet of his MACS armour. In shining scarlet and gold, he was a prime specimen of the Eagles, the crack regiment from Medolanium, and his regiment was one of two providing security in Aeterna City whilst the crackdown began. They had been expecting resistance from local troublemakers, and even perhaps an appearance by the terrorist RSA, but it seemed a handful of foreigners had managed to smuggle some weapons in-system, presumably hidden in trading vessels or public transports.

He heard the call from a Jade Guard officer on the other side of the square, but he had already heard the gunfire and seen the troops go down. He had 150 elite Jade Marines under his command, with thousands of comrades throughout the city, and he barked for one of his engineering platoons and a couple of his infantry platoons to capture the interlopers. 2nd and 4th Platoons moved in from the south, whilst 6th slipped along an alley from the north-west. 2nd and 4th laid down a barrage of fire to suppress the attackers with Arisaka M4 blaster rifles supported by two T99 Automatic Railguns, the railguns alone capable of sending 1400 rounds per minute at the unfortunate Mercatusan marines.

As Petrovic shifted to a new position to fire on Yoshida, 6th Platoon spotted him in the low light, their HUD's highlighting him. There was a clattering behind him as they spread out, taking cover in the street and training fifteen weapons at his back.

"Lay down your weapon! Put it down or we will shoot you!" bellowed a sergeant from behind the stone steps of a small pizzeria, sighting down the barrel of his M4, finger itched and ready to fire.

Petrovic calmly obeyed the soldiers, responding with the rudimentary Jade that he knew, "You guys win, I put gun down." He gently laid his sniper rifle down on the ground along with his handgun. Unbeknownst to them, he had concealed a small energy knife beneath his torso armor, cloaked so that their visors couldn't see it through the armor. He then used his neural implant to contact his remaining troops, hiding from the T99 fire. Across their HUDs, a message flashed. "Activate retreat teleporters, set destination [REDACTED]." The troops nodded at each other, grabbing a small silver device from a slot in the boron carbide armor. They dematerialized in a flash of orange, reappearing at the ordered location. When the teleportation was confirmed, Petrovic focused on getting rescued from the now 15 guns trained on his chest. He contacted a sniper that he positioned on top of the Cathedral in case such a thing were needed. "Longshot, fire incendiaries at the SpecOps troops and then teleport to [REDACTED]" The sniper, cloaked, aimed his anti-material rifle at the ground next to the Sergeant. He fired twice, the soldiers yelling in alarm at the explosions, looking for their attacker. In the confusion, Petrovic reacted swiftly. He ran, grabbing his SPSS and 10mm pistol, looking for Yoshida. The 6th were looking in their proximity for Petrovic, but it was too late. He was already out of sight.

Petrovic entered the Cathedral through one of the sides that had a hole blown in it. An injured soldier was crawling on the ground, bleeding out heavily. Petrovic grabbed looked at her, kneeling to her elevation. She shed a single tear as Petrovic asked, "Where is Absolvo?" She hesitantly pointed up, "Top floor." she said. Petrovic nodded, and grabbed her by the neck, helping her up. She knew what was about to happen. Petrovic drew his pistol, pulled the slide back, and shot her in the back of the head. She jerked forwards, and then fell limp, pure fear painted on her dead face. He looked at her body, taking the dog tag and her assault rifle along with the spare clips she had. He knew where he had to go now, he walked up the stairs and through halls, shooting any wounded he found. Unbeknownst to him, however, Yoshida saw where he went in and what he had done.

Holy Precincts
Petrovic

The Mercatan soldier made his way through the hallowed halls, viciously murdering any injured members of the Barsus Guards he came across. His footsteps echoed loud in the quiet, still air of the dusty corridors. Passing antique tapestries and ancient marble busts, Petrovic turned a corner and was confronted by a group of perhaps a dozen samurai and ashigaru in various colours. Out front, holding nothing but a katana, a samurai in black armour with panels of white and lightning blue lacquer waited for Petrovic. Behind him, one ashigaru in a baggy cream shirt and brown slacks underneath camo-patterned flak armour grinning from beneath her conical sugegasa hat. She held what looked like a bulky grenade in one hand, her thumb ready on some kind of detonator.

The samurai in front spoke from behind his snarling mempo mask, in heavily-accented Basic.

"Gaijin, today you are going to die. Draw your blade and die honourably, or do not. Either way, I will take great enjoyment from your death."

He took a step towards Petrovic, one hand still at his side, waiting for the foreigner's response.

The whole conversation took a matter of milliseconds. Cicero activated the Welthelm Defensive system only momentarily, flash-alerting all authorised vessels and systems in the region that FTL would be momentarily unavailable. For the unwitting Mercatan soldiers, their attempt at teleportation would still work, but would deposit them in a completely randomised location thanks to the space-time distortion caused by the Time-space Interdiction Lattice, or TILT, that just made a web of artificial gravity shadows all over the area.

The soldiers, instead of teleporting away to safety, would find themselves in the middle of a swooping vineyard just outside the city, gentling sloping downhill from an old plaster building with a slate-tiled roof and drystone walls. Almost instantly, overhead, a 46m Hyo-class corvette slid into reality above them, appearing as if from nowhere, its shining red flanks full of menace as it cast a long shadow over the interlopers.

Its BDP emplacements, heavy weapons designed to shoot down enemy fighters and torpedoes in the cold vacuum of space using gyaku-beams, came to bear on the enemy, whilst from several other directions multiple Soyokaze L3 shuttles appeared, hovering at the edges of the vineyard and depositing squads of Jade Marines.

From the belly of the corvette, a booming loudspeaker demanded the surrender of the Mercatans.

"ATTENTION CRIMINALS. YOU ARE UNDER ARREST. IF YOU RESIST YOU WILL BE EXECUTED. LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS."

Petrovic looked at the Samurai for a few moments, analyzing the situation. Even though I can't understand most of what he's saying, I know he's challenging me, he thought. Petrovic was well versed in close-quarters combat, and he looked forward to the challenge. He produced an energy machete, igniting the white-hot blade. The Samurai readied his blade, and Petrovic readied his. The two swiftly charged, and to an observer it would look like a blur of motion. Petrovic was driven on by a lust for revenge against Yoshida, who he still hasn't found yet. Some years back, Yoshida single-handedly killed all of the troops under his command, after which he vowed to avenge them. The Samurai was extremely skillful, many times almost taking Petrovic' head, leg, or arm with his blade. After Petrovic was tired of going on the defense, he backed away, and charged with a swift barrage of moves. Heavy slashes and constant jabs harried the Samurai, until the woman with the grenade-like thing threw it at Petrovic. All of a sudden, channels of pain erupted on Petrovic. He fell on the floor in agony, screaming like he never had before. The soldiers before him just stared, the woman who had thrown the grenade giving some kind of sick smile. He noticed several gashes and holes on his right side, all bleeding out. "For my sister." she said, referring to the first soldier Petrovic shot in the Cathedral. He put the dog tag he took on the floor next to him, and the woman who threw the object swiftly picked it up. The Samurai moved to gut Petrovic, but was stopped by his comrades. "We need to know how he got here and why he is here." one of them said. He nodded, and backed down, and the last thing Petrovic felt was the butt of a rifle hitting his head, knocking him out. For the first time in his career, Petrovic had been captured.

Outside where the soldiers had teleported, the soldiers look around in confusion. They all knew what to do when facing capture. They all dropped their weapons in compliance, and one of them pulled out a black object with a holographic button on it. He pressed it, and the fusion cores of their suits were overloaded, detonating with a blast of heat and radiation. The blast radius vaporized everything within 200 meters, and just like that, they were gone.

The Holy Empire of Imperial Gatorland sees this persecution of the Catholic population as a breach of human rights.

The Imperial Senate has declared war on Great Ingen and Mercatus.

We have sent the 1st Imperial Navy fleet, with 5 stormtrooper legions to invade. Our intelligence network, the Inquisition, is gathering intelligence on the location of the Pope.

Holy Precincts
Petrovic

Daisuke Hamasaki stepped back, his face contemplative. The Mercatan had used his machete-style weapon to great effect, keeping it tight to his body and managing to parry or dodge the hissing attacks of the long katana, but he had tired and launched a wild, slashing offensive which, had the ashigaru behind Daisuke not used her Stasis Grenade to intervene, would have forced Daisuke to bring the confrontation to a close.

Another soldier stepped forwards, raising his Burnham assault rifle and bringing it down sharply on the Mercatan's head....

The Three Sisters Vineyard
Outside Aeterna

The cornered Mercatans yanked out some kind of suicide switch and detonated it, presumably hoping to take some of the Imperials with them. The waves of energy crackled harmlessly against the powerful shielding of the corvette and shuttles, whilst the soldiers on the ground were buffeted by the blast, their personal shielding screeching in protest and in some cases overloading, leaving a chorus of warning beeps. Those whose shields had failed fell into covering positions, whilst the rest of the marines cautiously advanced to check the area. Upon finding it clear of everything except radiation and the swirling particles that had once been Mercatan troops, a staff sergeant shook his head.

"What a waste," he said "to attempt such a noble death in such an embarrassing way."

An Ingenious regiment, they had no qualms about choosing death over dishonour, but to do so in such a haphazard and unsuccessful way was greatly shameful to them. Still, it had been a decent effort.

???
Petrovic

Sometime later, Petrovic awoke. He had been stripped of his armour and weapons, and a full search had been made to ensure he had no cyanide capsules, hidden weapons or other devices on his person. Dressed only in a white loincloth, a bright light was shining directly into his face. He could smell the cold, faintly damp aroma of stone, suggesting he was deep inside an old building or a cave of some kind. His hands were cuffed behind his back, and he would quickly realise he was slumped against a metal pole that ran from the ceiling to the floor behind him, his arms cuffed around it.

Behind the lamp a silhouette stirred, barely visible in the darkness, and a voice spoke in Basic, the common language of the galaxy. It was a male voice, with a strange lilting accent and bass tones that suggested the person speaking was physically massive. Two yellow-gold glints which might have been eyes became apparent behind the light, just to the right.

"Buenos sera, my friend. Welcome to the house of the Jade Intelligence Agency Network. I am Colonel Azorrado, and it is my singular pleasure to have you with us. May I ask the purpose of your visit?"

Petrovic looked up at the Colonel with a blank face. "I was here to capture and execute Absolvo III as well as attain vengeance against Tai-I Aoi Yoshida, for reasons I won't reveal. Now, may I graciously ask that you provide me with more proper clothing?" He looked down at his side, which had previously been in terrible shape after the grenade-like weapon was used on him, but now showed no sign of any injury. The Colonel paused for a moment, appearing to speak to another person in Petrovic's still blurry vision.

Crimetopolis' post is blatant godmodding and is to be disregarded. He has been informed via TG that he is not welcome to participate in this thread

Seiiki City
Somewhere beneath the Kokobusho

Bertoldo Vignone, formerly known as Pope Absolvo III, had not been mistreated as such. He was held in a secure room with a comfortable couch, a small bookshelf, and a washroom down the hall. A stern-looking guard in fatigues waited just inside the heavy door, whilst outside the occasional sound of footsteps, rolling pallets, sliding doors, or muffled announcements betrayed the existence of a world beyond the cell.

After what seemed like hours, the erstwhile Pope was almost dozing when the door suddenly swung open and in swept Shogun Kanbei, commander of the entire Jade military. At his shoulder was Director Johnson, the country's leading intelligence officer. A mismatched pair, one a born-and-bred samurai of impeccable lineage, the other a second-generation Imaginariumese immigrant with a murky history, they nevertheless seemed united in purpose.

Kanbei stood, hands on his hips, staring at Vignone who had scrambled to his feet, and only after an uncomfortable silence did he slowly lower himself to sit on the one long couch. Johnson perched herself on the arm of said couch, leaving Vignone nowhere to sit. He stood awkwardly, in his robes but missing his mitre and accoutrements, until finally Johnson spoke in a calm, almost reassuring tone.

"Bertoldo, it's been a while. Let's catch up..."

????
Petrovic

There was silence for a moment. Colonel Azzorado seemed to be digesting Petrovic's answer. The eyes closed, leaving Petrovic alone in the blinding light for a moment, before the Colonel's voice spoke again.

"Most interesting. Before we go any further, I will make it clear to you that your treatment depends wholly on your cooperation. Lacking any formal declaration of war, and having entered the Jade Empire under false pretenses, you are not affording the protections given to prisoners of war by the Imperial Jade Navy, but I am not a cruel man. So let us talk some more."

He stepped forwards into the light. He was a humanoid, roughly six feet tall, but broad with lithe muscle. He had the face of a lynx with glinting, cruel eyes and large, tufted ears. He was dressed in black fatigues and appeared unarmed, but his hands were massive paws ending in sharp claws. This was no half-human half-feline creature - this was simply a felid that had evolved to become the apex predator of its environment. It spoke like a human and dressed like a human, but any Imperial familiar with felidaens knew that they were in no way human. Their minds worked differently, in strange ways, and the only real similarities they shared with humans were bipedalism and the common biological traits all mammals shared.

"Tell me your name," he said soothingly, his eyes unwinking as they stared at the prisoner "and tell me who sent you to kill the Pope, and why?"

"Tell me your name," he said soothingly, his eyes unwinking as they stared at the prisoner "and tell me who sent you to kill the Pope, and why?"

"My name is Major Dzenan Petrovic of the Mercatusian Marine Corp. I was sent to kill the Pope by a commander, who's name was not divulged to me. The Pope was wanted dead on drug smuggling charges, a few acts of terrorism by his religious organization, and multiple charges of kidnapping, mostly children from the outer worlds." Petrovic replied. He trembled at the sight of a nonhuman, especially a felidaen, as Mercatusians were naturally xenophobic because of devastating past wars with them. More specifically, a savage war had been fought between the "kitties" as Mercatusians called them, and Mercatus itself. People commonly came back missing limbs and prisoners were ripped apart as a sport after their usefulness was over. The Felidean looked into Petrovic's eyes, and Petrovic trembled more so, even though he was being completely compliant, having nothing to hide.

The officer's ears pricked at Petrovic's response. He seemed almost taken aback by the open admission of intent.

"I see."

He turned his back, pacing around the far side of the room before returning to Petrovic. He opened his mouth to speak, and then hesitated, as if he had thought of something else. When he spoke, it was with a calm, almost inquisitive tone.

"Tell me, why did your government not simply reach out to the Jade Empire? The crimes of the Catholic Church are being dragged screaming into the light, but by attacking Jade soldiers with your treacherous acts of terrorism you have brought about a state of war between Mercata and the Jade Empire."

He leaned closer to Petrovic, his lip curling back. "Should the Jade Empress see fit, she will unleash the warships of the Imperial Jade Navy to burn your worlds. The charred bones of your people will be trodden underfoot by Imperial warriors, and millions of souls will find their way to the next life or else be consumed by the Great Dragon. You have murdered nearly a dozen brave Jade soldiers, you have bought treachery and death onto the sacred planet of Laptev, and now the fires of Rapuchefu lick at your feet, so tell me what madness possessed you and your leaders to attack us?!"

By the time he finished he was hissing with anger, the stench of his breath washing over Petrovic.

Petrovic hesitantly responded, "I was not ordered to attack your soldiers. I had a personal vendetta with your warrior Yoshida, and I am afraid I was too committed to it, even more so than my mission. I know now I should have gone alone, and only focused on my assigned target and Yoshida. I understand those men and women had families, and you may see killing the weak and wounded as a dishonor, but in actuality, it was mercy." He trembled more so to the point of sweating profusely, waiting for the felidaen to decide that he wasn't being truthful and rip him apart here and now. He was still being completely honest, however.

The Jade Empire has captured one Major Petrovic in Imperial territory. Major Petrovic claims he was dispatched by your nation to kidnap a Jade citizen, Bertoldo Vignone.

In the process of attempting to commit this crime, he and his soldiers killed six members of the Imperial Jade Guard and attempted to kill multiple civilians, Guard and Jade Marines. Petrovic is now in custody and has asserted that he was dispatched to perform this mission by your military authorities.

This constitutes an act of war. We demand an immediate explanation and reparations be provided, or we will be forced to consider our two nations to be in a state of war.

Secure Transmission From Skavac

Petrovic was sent to kidnap and execute who we knew as Pope Absolvo III, and know no one by the name of Bertoldo Vignone. However, he was not ordered to target Jade civilians, unless that was the work of the men under his command, because Petrovic has never shown hostility to civilians. He was permitted to target Jade troops if he deemed it necessary. Please don't tell me his personal vendetta got in the way of things. We agree to pay reparations and any at all costs of funerals. If the attack on Jade forces was authorized by our military authorities, I, nor any of my associates, authorized this intervention. If the rumors are true in the house of state, then a decommissioned fanatical branch of our military may secretly be trying to come back to power, and created a situation in which Petrovic was an unknowing pawn in their sick game. I personally apologize for this intervention and have authorized an investigation of all government officials. We wish to have a prosperous and friendly relationship with the Jade Empire, and it is incidents like these which revive our fanatical past that obstruct such negotiations.

Signed: Sargon IV

???

Petrovic almost seemed like he was struck when the Colonel asked that question. He hesitated, but wishing to live, he answered, "I-, she-, a few years back, when Mercatus and Jade were still enemies, Yoshida had killed off my entire squad single-handedly when they were wounded, and the medics had their hands full. I lost everything to her, my honor, my morale, and my self-perceived capability to lead, and only the lust for vengeance was left. I saw the assignment as a chance to fulfill that, and I took it." A guard arrived with Petrovic's jumpsuit and water, and he hastily dressed and gulped down the water.

Secure communication to Skavac
You have the audacity to authorise covert operations on our soil and grant clearance to your personnel to murder our soldiers. This is unacceptable. The Jade Empire demands reparations in the form of a colony planet or planets with a total raw material output of no less than 6,000,000,000,000 NSD aggregate value, equivalent to six thousand billion NSD dollars per murdered Imperial. This planet or planets will be evacuated immediately by all Mercatan citizens, personnel, contractors and tenants and the planets ceded in perpetuity to the Jade Empire of Ingen.

If these demands are not met then the Jade Empire will declare war on Mercata and will accept nothing short of unconditional surrender. You have twenty-four standard hours to respond to these demands.

Petrovic
The Colonel sneered. "You murder conscript peasants and call it mercy, and then whine about the loss of men under your command? Their deaths were your fault. Your crimes have bought great danger to Mercata. Even now, the Jade Empire is readying itself for glorious war. It is most likely that many more Mercatans will die because of you, Major Petrovic. You did very well to get your team so deeply into Jade territory, but now your people will pay for your transgressions."

He turned to leave, pausing in the doorway.

"The Jade Empress will decide your fate. If you are lucky, you will receive an honourable execution, or perhaps even the right to die with a weapon in your hands. If your luck has run out, then you will die in ignominy and pain. Your honesty speaks in your favour, but your crimes speak against you. I leave you now to think on what you have done."

He stepped into the corridor, shutting the heavy cell door behind him. Yoshida waited outside, her arms folded.

"What did he want, sir?"

Azzorado raised his eyebrows, glancing back at the door, and then shook his head.

"He says you massacred his squad, a long time ago. His judgement is clearly flawed.". The colonel shrugged lackadasically and then strolled away down the corridor, leaving Aoi to stare at the cell. She remembered a skirmish on some far-off colony world, a handful of Mercatans against the few Imperials there to investigate an unusual sensory reading. An ambush, and several enemies writhing on the ground in pain. She had finished them off quickly with her rifle, seeing more enemies approaching. It had been cruel, but that was war, and a far kinder fate than many could expect...but she could understand the survivor's guilt the Major must have felt, the hot anger of watching injured men and women under your command killed by an uncaring enemy. She took a step towards the door and then stopped, shaking her head and then walking away.

Standing aboard his Sea Fortress, Eclipse, Drakvar Telios looked on to the shore of Great Ingen. Know, as Drakvar the Kraken, this accomplished lord admiral had earned many accolades in the Empire's service, including being made Duke of Atlantis. His keen eyes surveyed the land. "Send the crew to action stations" he instructed his staff.
"Today we attack Great Ingen.
Forward, for the Emperor and for Gatorland!"

His enormous fleet began to rumble with the sound of guns, as his carriers started to disgourge armoured vehicles and aircraft. The invasion had begun.

Judgement of the Void

The news of the ongoing persecution of Catholicism within the Ingenious Realm would have come off as delightful. Those members of the Magistrum who desired to renew the war with the Ingenious and banish them to the furthest regions of civilized space once more were in high spirits. Mobilization for war, even as the cycle's end was nigh, was made official throughout a Realm that hungered once more for Voidkampf. The Magisters of the Dread Fleet saw to their charges, and set their course for the Ingenious Realm.

War, red war, would be brought to the Ingenious Realm with a determination to lay waste the Jade Realm fro Laptev to the remotest Ingenious outposts. The mobilization had proceeded with typical efficiency as forces were withdrawn from quiet sectors to prop up the expeditionary force. Under the command of the Dux Atarr du Vras, the Magisters and Commanders of the host submitted themselves to his charge. The great host assembled would number some fifty Corps, though more were expected to be provided for reinforcement if casualties should resemble those of Yamsai or Septimania.

The Frankian Orders, from the high to the low, set to the task of striking a blow at the Dragon with due vigor. The great Dromonds lumbered from their ports, churning up the very elements of the Void. Tens of thousands of other vessels followed in their wake, ranging in size from the ancient dreadnoughts to the latest ships-of-the-line. Constant retrofitting and reinforcement had brought the bloodied ranks of the Dread Fleet back to full-strength, new faces had gradually replaced those of old.. New faces that had not yet known the taste of defeat.

The Dread Sovereign watched the proceedings solemnly, his eyes watching his children gather once more to face the storm that he had averted. Once more, the Supreme Magistrum had ruled that Voidkampf should resume amongst the Great Powers. While the diplomats formally harangued, the soldiers readied themselves for a war that was expected to be as horrible as the last. Feylor IV desired no additional territories, but even he could conclude that the great betrayal of the Ingenious on behalf of the Pords had certainly rankled greatly. To strike a blow might weaken the Jade Empire to the point where they might make a decisive contribution to another bout of Voidkampf, at the most the Jade Realm would be reduced to ash and bone.

The Dread Sovereign noted a pamphlet as he strolled with his guard through a commune. It was that of a horned knight slaying a dragon, his lance piercing its heart. If all went well off Laptev, which had never been taken, then the war might be ended in a matter of days. If not, the horned knight be bucked off his horse to be devoured whole by the dragon. It was then that he noticed his daughters riding up towards him, their green armor gleaming in Neustria's morning sun.

His daughters dismounted and bent the knee to their King, to their father. He bade them rise, and embraced them.

So there shall be war, father.

Aye, strife will once more return to the Cosmos. But this time we are not alone, for we are but of one many powers arranged against the Dragon.

Unenlighted regimes, father, will not be able to do much harm to the dragons...

Our arms shall be more than enough to tip the scale...

May the Mater Most High will it...

And may She keep you safe, and guide your fusillades.

Diplomatic Wrangling

Official Condemnation

The persecution of one of the paths to the Mater's Light is an abomination in the eyes of His Dread Sovereign and that of His Government. Such measures are the remnants of barbaric realms that could not guarantee domestic tranquility amongst the orders of their respective Realm. The Frankian government demands that such measures should cease, and that those responsible for the persecution be handed over to an international court of law to face trial for their crimes. If not, Her Jade Majesty can guarantee that the Dread Realm will take up arms in defense of religious minorities and guarantee tranquility within Her Realm.

Messages would be streamed constantly to the Catholic subjects of the Ingenious Realm, as well as to foreign volunteers who might wish to give all for the cause of the Pope.

To the Catholic folk of the Jade Realm!
Your liberation will come, another Cyrus is foretold. You will be delivered from the Jade yoke if you will rise on behalf of His Dread Majesty. Your rights, your liberties, your right to autonomy will be respected under the banner of the Great Dread King. The Catholic Liberation Army has joined the ranks of our Greenclad, the followers of your Faith sail with those of the Dread Fleet!

Encrypted dispatches would be directed towards those already in arms against the Jade Realm, though not yet coordinated.

New Friends, New Allies. The Dread Realm pledges itself to your cause against the unholy and treacherous Ingenious. If you will but stand with our host we shall together bring justice to those that are dispossessed. From this moment, know that His Dread Sovereign's government intends the formation of an anti-Ingenious coalition until the forces of oppression are forever vanquished.
O Pious, do not forsake us!
We keep the Law of the Mater Atkana.
Her name is ever upon our tongue.
O Pious, do not forget the Children of Atkane!
What must rise, must fall. What must live, must die. What must be, must cease. Only the One shall remain.

Your support of the terrorist Resistanzia de San Alejandra has not gone unnoted. The Dread Realm's unwavering support for any who would harm the Jade Empire, no matter how debased their methods or cause, is unfortunate, and so to assuage your distraught minds we assure you that the Jade Empire is an empire at peace with itself and does not require the maladroit interference of any foreign power.

Should Royal Frankia be so unwise as to trespass on sovereign Imperial territory, they will not be spared. Your fleets are not welcome here, but should they choose to violate Imperial space we will use their hulls for scrap and their crews for slave labour. Your pretense at caring for the so-called plight of the Catholics in the Jade Empire is a fig leaf for your desire to assault our territories and our people, and it will not save you from the destruction that will surely follow if you make such an unwise choice.

For every Jade warrior that falls in glorious battle, a hundred Franks will die. Only if your people are truly prepared to make their final journey and step into the dingy glow you call your Mater's Light should they come bearing arms against us. Only if they are prepared to see their worlds burn and their families slain by their own hubris should they raise their fist to strike against the people of the Great Dragon.

The Jade Palace, Ingen
Jade Empress Takara

The Jade Empress still found it strange that Matamoro Kanbei, the tenacious hero of the Restoration and overlord of Laptev Province, was now her Shogun. The previous commander of the military, Takeichi Starkpfote, had passed away of old age only a few months ago, and following a grand state funeral his replacement had been selected by the Council of Regents, summoned at her request for the heavy task of replacing one of the finest warmasters the Empire had ever seen.

Kanbei was a fierce, compact man, more than a hundred years old, putting him squarely in middle age for an Ingenious. His hair was still jet black, with only a few streaks of grey and white here and there betraying the years of experience under his belt. He sat on a simple wooden stool in front of her in the Lantern Room, where she sat decorously on a carved wooden chair that was close to being a throne, but just modest enough to retain the title of chair. Few people were permitted to sit in the presence of the Jade Empress, and even her consort Colonel Buntaro was stood to attention at the door on the far side of the room, but as Shogun Kanbei was second only in rank to Takara herself.

Leaning his right hand on his right knee and his left elbow on his right knee, he stroked his moustache with his left hand contemplatively.

"If the Franks do truly intend to invade, they will come in great numbers." said Takara calmly, stating it as a fact rather than a question. Kanbei nodded, almost to himself, then glanced up at her.

"Yes. I am not too concerned about our ability to withstand their assault. They will come at us in great waves and we will mow them down like wheat." He sounded confident, but privately he suspected it would be a little more difficult than that. "What concerns me at present is their persistence. No matter how great their losses here, they seem unable to give up their designs on Laptev. I had hoped that, after the fiasco at Long Isle, they would abandon their bitter fury, but it seems that the ocean of their anger only deepens with time. I believe that, if they attack us, we have no option but to counter-attack. "The offense that ought to be done to the man must be done in such a way that you must not be afraid of revenge""

As they spoke, across the territories of the Jade Empire, preparations were being made to turn out the Imperial Jade Guard and call fleets to ready stations. System defenses were checked and re-checked, and local governors quietly prepared for emergency protocols in case the Franks did decide to hazard their arms against the Jade Empire once again.

I would sacrifice a billion lives for victory.
-Magister Urstanna vra Krevskyr

While the war of words waged between the powers, the Frankian Crown readied itself for another clash through rationing and calling up even the oldest of the Greenclad. Regiments sprang up from the very soil as the Frankian regime mobilized every son necessary for the coming campaign against the dragon. Rise or fall, the Rammenflieg would need all her sons in the pursuit of glory abroad. Millions, nay, billions might fall, but a weakening of the Ingenious regime as a tic for tack was but a small price to pay.

Incessant propaganda against the Jade Majesty's administers proliferated, it not being deemed to fit to insult a fellow monarch of another power. The Ingenious monarch was said to be misled by war mongers or religious fanatics with little incite to the reaction of the Cosmos outside their control. Perhaps this part of the war of words might make defections from the Ingenious easier, but none of the Magistrate expected that the Ingenious ranks will buckle as soon as they were pressed. The last war had taught the old masters a lesson, that to direct their chief war aim at the enemy's heart would result in an instant parry.

Maneuver and the bringing of fire to bear were stressed by those that bore the Magister's cross to the lowliest shiplord. In the great battles that were come, a swift stroke at an exposed portion of the enemy might be able to net a victory. One for one, it was believed that the Dread Fleet assembled against but a single front might achieve far more than fighting on multiple fronts against an entire coalition. The Ingenious were at a disadvantage this time around, for now they were at war with multiple powers while the Frankians could concentrate on but a single neck.

The 19th, 34th, and 58th Corps that converged on the Mater''s Redoubt to bulster the 8th Armada were but a sample of the host being assembled. Other Corps were arriving from ftl with each passing day, brought from distant corners of the Realm to bulster the 8th Armada to beyond full-strength. The Dromonds, constructed to go toe to toe with the Sacred League, were numbering in their thousands. Dreadnoughts from the last war had been retrofitted to withstand the Voidkampf that was expected. What was perhaps more noticeable was how few the Frankian warships were in contrast to the Yamsai conflict, the last war having brought home the need to consolidate ships and guns to better guarantee shock, firepower, and force coordination.

Other points of coordination were designated, though while the nation mobilized no formal declaration of war was not yet issued. It was hoped by some in the Magistrate the Ingenious might come to their senses in pursuing such a vicious policy against religious minorities, but most expected that even her Jade Majesty could not stop what was coming. Worlds would surely burn, entire communities slaughtered, scores of Fleets and Armies slain, but it was not yet decided by Fate whose should certainly burn.

A feint against Laptev was postulated, it drawing forth the bulk of the Dragon's resources and fury. Given the lessons of the last conflict and the amount of casualties wrought from the defense, some recommended a defensive strategy that would force the Dragon to dispatch their forces where they could be sufficiently wrecked. In the Void, and with some advantage in force replenishment, the Ingenious would be lured into a conflict that would cost them at a great disadvantage themselves to pursue. Some advocated a direct assault on Alejandra to spark a national rising, perhaps capable of sparking similar risings across the Jade Empire.

Ultimately, and despite the opposition of some within the Magistrate, the defensive strategy was adopted. Worlds would be burned to prevent them from falling to the foe, sections of the foe isolated from their main body would be cut off and annihilated, and space and lives would be traded to ultimately weaken the Ingenious Fleet to the point where they might catch find themselves in a quandary that would bring their cause to ruin. Neustria, in particular, was considered bait for shattering forever the Ingenious Fleet and opening Laptev itself to invasion.

None of this would leave the chambers of the Magistrate, though it would be noted that the Frankians were placed in a defensive stance while troublesome areas were cleared of their populations and wealth. Engineers labored incessantly once the order was handed down to create formidable works to hold the foe and force him into concentrating his forces into fields of fire that Frankian orbital artillery might smash to ruin. Lancer formations were drilled for hit and run exercises in support of Voltigeur units to disrupt the enemy and to maul him wherever possible.

The 4th Lancers had won fame in the last war, though none thought this war would net them any but grief. They were responsible for rearguard actions off Neustria, where, if the enemy should concentrate in force, those of the white shako might find themselves cut to ribbons against concentrated turbolazer fire. The 45th Hussar regiment had been attached only recently, swelling their ranks with ships and fighting men. The 93rd Voltigeurs checked their batteries and systems, practicing fighting on the run to pepper targets of opportunity to ruin.

Magister Karl vra Urstann was in charge of the defense of the outlying Neustrian sector, that sector that would bear the likely assault of the Ingenious. Postulations from the computer and official intelligence reports did not give justice to providing him a fair guesstimate of what it was he was likely to face. Such matters as Voidkampf, where and when the enemy might strike, were not yet rendered sufficiently a science. His staff had debated on the likelihood of an Ingenious assault against Austrasia, Neustrasia, Urlannenbourg, or even Gerwannia, but the staffs of those Cores were discussing the same issue. No matter where the enemy struck and in what number, his forces would be faced against a determined foe that was growing stronger every day.

The Metic Legions were being ferried from Greater Frankia to reinforce strongpoints that the enemy would be forced to disembark and assault. Nasty surprises would lay for those that wielded the katana as Greenclad and Legionnaires dug into the poor soil of these worlds. Battery emplacements were to coordinate with the orbital forts and squadrons, and if worst came to worst at least disrupt the initial landings. If the Ingenious came on they would have to fight for every league of ground, more to delay their ships in orbit than the men on the ground themselves.

As such matters were discussed and the decisions implemented, a final ultimatum was dispatched to the Jade Realm.

His Dread Sovereign's government issues this final warning that, unless the Ingenious should cease and desist from their actions against the Catholics within their dominion, then His Dread Sovereign's government will regard itself in a state of war with the Jade Empire. Such a war will be ruinous, and result in the end of the Jade Empire as a Great Power. Frankians and Ingenious will fall alike in strife, but remember that we will not stop until we achieve our righteous war aims. Harken to reason, and abandon your arrogant ministers who threaten your fabled Empire to ruin.
O Pious, do not forsake us!
We keep the Law of the Mater Atkana.
Her name is ever upon our tongue.
O Pious, do not forget the Children of Atkane!
What must rise, must fall. What must live, must die. What must be, must cease. Only the One shall remain.

The Umehara Courtyard

Early in the morning, the former Pope was woken politely by his guard. Behind the man, whose face had become half familiar over the last few days, stood several stern-faced warriors in the rich green ceremonial armour of the 1st Regiment, the Konoe Shinan. Bertoldo shuddered, and even though nothing had been said, he instinctively knew what was to happen.

Allowed to dress, he was led through the ancient stone walkways and wooden corridors of the Jade Palace until, abruptly, they stepped through a small cherrywood door and into the early sunlight, a faint mist curling under the eaves of the castle and bringing a soft chill to the air. In the courtyard of smoothly raked gravel a throng waited, a riot of colours as samurai and nobles from a dozen different districts, along with clerks and aides and functionaries and other civilians. The severe face of Matomoro Kanbei leaped out at him from the crowd, dressed in a somber blue kimono with dark navy trim and open-toed sandals despite the cold.

He stepped forwards and bowed to Bertoldo, who bowed back, although less deeply. Some embers of resolve fanned themselves into a passionate determination to show these barbarians how to die with dignity.

"Bertoldo Vignone, you have been found guilty of incitement of terrorism, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit arson, aiding and abetting wanted criminals, and of disturbing the peace of the Jade Empire. For this you have been sentenced to die. You shall be put to death this day, at this place. Do you have any last words?"

The man was so blunt and so severe that it took Vignone a few moments to answer. Starkpfote, for all that he had been a non-human monstrosity, had understood the nuance of conversation. Finally the old man responded, straightening his back.

"All I have done I have done for the good of the people of San Alejandro, and for the glorification of Our Father in Heaven. His hand lays upon me now, and I go gladly to his right hand side in Heaven. I pray for your eternal souls and forgive you your sins."

With that he simply closed his eyes and clutched his crucifix, whispering in High Alejandran. Kanbei nodded and gestured at the guards, who walked Vignone over to a wooden post erected for the purpose and lashed his hands to it, tearing open his shirt. An ashigaru dressed in black, with a headwrap covering everything save his eyes, stepped forwards hefting a heavy whip with notches in the leather. The man glanced at Kanbei, eyes wide open, and at a nod he raised the whip, his arm drawn far back. Vignone opened his eyes and raised them to the grey sky, the sun obscured by curling clouds. There was a moment of pregnant silence, then the executioner grunted and the whip cracked...

Across the Jade Empire

There had been unrest across the nation after the Empire had arrested the Pope, particularly in Alejandra District. RSA attacks had erupted across the islands, but the JIAN and Jade Marines had been prepared for the unrest - indeed, they had counted on such a drastic move provoking action from a range of cells and lone wolves, and it had been a bloody few days, with civilians, soldiers and rebels shedding blood by the gallon.

Across the Jade Empire now, broadcast by the Jade Courier Network, the government-run multimedia organisation, was a statement from the Jade Palace that Bertoldo Vignone had been executed by flogging that morning after being convicted of a wide range of crimes related to his sponsorship of the terror organisation known as the Resistanzia de San Alejandro. With the latest news of Vignone's painful death, the province erupted into protests both peaceful and violent. Of the 1.3 billion people living in Alejandra District, nearly a billion of them were still registered Catholics. As anti-government violence intensified, regiments of Jade Marines mobilised specifically for this moment were quietly landed across the islands, equipped with LTL weapons to assist the hugely unnumbered Jade Guard in suppressing the furious crowds. Within a few hours of the announcement, several thousand Alejandrans had already been arrested, whilst rumours of deaths across the board began to float across social media apps. The flag of the Franks began to appear as a protest symbol, whilst counter-protests against the Catholics and Frankish interference in other Imperial districts resulted in curfews and increased police presence across much of the Jade Empire.
