"We offer all the right to live in utopia—but some still choose to fight for the right to live in hell."
- Ren Cao, Supreme Commissary of the Pan-Asiatic States

PREMISE

Outsiders often come across mention of bands of rebels agitating within the Pan-Asiatic States in their news cycle, and make the terrible mistake of disregarding them as minor skirmishes of the rabble. Some laugh at the pettiness of the rebel's quarrel, others heckle at yet another stunt by the majoritarian Pan-Asiatic government to enforce its ideology—knowing full well that those who oppose the military might of the People's Federation in small numbers are walking right into a slaughter.

But there is always the chosen few, the men and women of action. There are those with a lust to bathe in blood. There are those who see insurgency as an opportunity: a chance to die for a cause maybe? A chance to prove their worth? A chance at adventure? Or perhaps for the pragmatic, a chance to sell their sword for a fair price?

The insurgency in Aceh, officially designated the Aceh Disturbance by the Pan-Asiatic government, was first, merely an obscure conflict fought by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) between 1976 to 2005. People thought the peace would last.

It would not.

The Free Aceh Movement has the goal of making the province of Aceh independent from the Pan-Asiatic States due to cultural and religious differences between Aceh and much of the rest of the State of Nusantara. A more conservative form of Islam than is mainstream in most of Nusantara is widely practiced in Aceh. The broadly secular policies the late '90s were especially unpopular in Aceh where many resented the central government's policy of promoting a unified 'Nusantara culture'. Further, not surprisingly given the location of the province at the northern end of Nusantara, there is a widespread feeling in the province that leaders in distant Jakarta and Neo-Manila do not understand Aceh's problems and have little sympathy for local needs and customs in Aceh.

But the main issue pertaining to economic grievances were related to the revenues derived from the oil and gas industries in Aceh. Oil - the liquid gold of the 21st Century, was something the Pan-Asiatic Revolution-Machine needed to survive: for their tanks to be distributed among the proletariat of the world, the proletariat of Aceh had to sacrifice their vast, lush, and sacred earth.

An "LNG boom" following the discovery natural gas on the northeast coast of Aceh led to scarcity of every other major resource. Now, the Pan-Asiatic States Armed Forces have tightened their grip on the region once more. The political authority of the Armed Forces, considerable even under normal conditions, now became unchallengeable. In the name of national security, military and police authorities deployed in Aceh were thereafter free to use virtually any means deemed necessary to destroy the traitors to the revolution.

With their ammunition and food stores empty, the rebels of Aceh have also turned to more desperate means of feeding their own revolution - armed force against local farmers. On both the government's and rebel's side, no sacrifice is unwarranted. But able men with the will to fight are scarce.

THE THREE GOLDEN RULES

  1. Please keep responses civil and realistic.
  2. I reserve the right to refuse to recognize something as canon in PAS lore if particular actions are not realistic.
  3. Direct all chatter not written from an in-character perspective to the OOC thread.

Free Aceh Movement Resurfaces in Pan-Asiatic States
The Voice of Nusantara
September 18th, 2019

ACEH, Federation of New Nusantara, Pan-Asiatic States—The armed secessionist organization, the Free Aceh Movement (Indonesian: Gerakan Aceh Merdeka or simply GAM, Acehnese: Geurakan Acèh Meurdèka, also: Gěrakan Aceh Měrdeka), previously branded by the People's Federation of Pan-Asiatic States as a Medium Threat terrorist organization, has made a volatile resurgence in Southern Nusantara after a detachment of Acehnese militants overpowered Pan-Asiatic forces and seized multiple minor villages and municipalities within the West Aceh Prefecture, on the road to the key city of Calang.

The Free Aceh Movement is a separatist group seeking independence for the Aceh region of Sumatra from the Pan-Asiatic States. Their military leaders have been linked to several other notorious terrorist organizations operating in the Pan-Asiatic States advocating for secessionism and/or Anti-Communism, such as the Neo-Kuomintang Revolutionary Army (NKRA) in China and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in the Tagalog Soviet Socialist Republic. The GAM fought against the Imperial Japanese government during the Aceh insurgency from 1976 to 1991, and then against the Pan-Asiatic States government from 1991 until the present during which over 38,000 lives within the region are believed to have been lost.

The GAM have also been investigated to have established connections with the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and declassified documents by the Pan-Asiatic States' Ministry of State and Public Security (MSPS) have unveiled in previous years that several contracts between the American government and the Aceh insurgents have perpetuated the guerilla war through illegal transactions of arms and ammunition. The American government has refuted and denied these claims.

Peace talks with the leaders of the insurgency were attempted in 2005, where the Pan-Asiatic government even offered amnesty for participants of the conflict, but were ultimately, and vehemently turned-down. The GAM have fought a guerilla war since then, but despite this, the Ministry of Defense reported their numbers to be merely around 1,000 to 1,500, and their strength in military technology to be below-average. These were both justified by the exponentially increasing number of defectors between 1991 and 2005, and the fact that the GAM still equips their militants with dated Second Pacific War-era small arms.

Between 2005 and 2019, an unsettling and tranquil lack of aggression from both sides existed, and raids against civilian and military targets confirmed to be of Acehnese origin in the region were averaged at only around 4 to 5 times per six months. Usually, these attacks were selective, only targeted against deliveries of food and clean water. The Pan-Asiatic States Armed Forces (PASAF), on the other hand, found much trouble in rooting-out the insurgency, as the mountainous terrain proved difficult and atrocious even for the most experienced of special forces units.

This tranquility was shattered this morning, when a battalion of Acehnese militants stormed the region with overwhelming manpower, equipped with the latest technology, and through modern infiltration tactics. Despite the fact that the Western and Southeastern Aceh Prefectures were quarantined high-conflict sites by the Pan-Asiatic States Armed Forces, Acehnese forces were able to catch the 33rd and 41st Pan-Asiatic Frontier Infantry Divisions off-guard. In response to this, the 9th Core Type 99a Armored Infiltration Regiment was deployed along with a Task Force of Armored Sentinels.

While the advance was halted, especially with the introduction of the 3rd Fighter Wing operating from and around Banda Aceh, the GAM's retreat preserved their forces, and continue to hold the city of Calang hostage. With an estimate of around 5,000 Acehnese rebels entrenched around the forests and mountains of Calang's outskirts, the city is cut-off from much-needed medical supplies and necessities, which have been attempted to be airlifted via the People's Air Force. While attempts in the afternoon were successful, the People's Air Force remains wary of handheld rocket-launchers and flak cannons hidden by the Acehnese military.

"This isn't Israel nor Skyhooked. Their deployment isn't really as massive as most enemies which have had engagements against the People's Army," cited Daimyō-Heneral Mã Sơn Lâm of the Forward Infantry Corps, Commander-in-Chief of Operation Sandbox, the operation to repel the terror-attacks of the Acehnese threat, during an interview with the Neo-Manila Post. "It's the terrain that burdens [our] troops ... We suspect that they are operating around the mountainous peripheral of Meulaboh. They have fortresses underground all the way from Calang to there... Our conventional army is not trained for mountainous warfare. The enemy is heavily fortified and we must exercise the utmost caution to protect civilian life and deter wasting the lives of our troops."

Muddy terrain caused by an influx of storms in the region have also slowed the approach of Sentinel units, although mechanized infantry have made their way through easily via Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs). Despite this, garrisons in the region remain critically unprepared for mounting an offensive, and the Daimyō-Heneral believes that a strong, underplanned offensive on the area may cause a severe casualty rate.

"I would not waste the life of a Pan-Asiatic hero for ten Acehnese soldiers. One death is one too many.", remarked the Commander-in-Chief.

NEARLY TWO MONTHS AFTER THE CAPTURE OF CALANG BY ACEHNESE FORCES

"It's like the definition didn't ever exist,
I guess it's all just dependent who your nemesis is,
Irrelevant how eloquent the rhetoric peddler is,
They're tellin' fibs now you tell us who the terrorist is."
- Lowkey, "Terrorist?"

Thousands of Pan-Asiatic troops now amassed on the outskirts of Calang. After months of brutal skirmishes and guerrilla warfare, followed by weeks of air-raids and tactical bombing, the Pan-Asiatic States Armed Forces now planned on launching a final decisive offensive to re-take the key Acehnese-controlled regional capital. Refugees had caused traffic along major highways, but fresh troops to replace losses as well as newly-manufactured armored vehicles shipped from the State of Japan, had finally made their way to the government garrison and were preparing for the push.

Aspirant First Class Poltorak Ventura of the 36th "Undas" Jungle Combat Company's "E" Section, a War-Hero previously re-deployed from the Pan-Asiatic States' military attaché in Samporna was tasked to make soft attacks with his troops along the coast to take-out enemy artillery and scout the environment one last time to clear a path for APCs towards Calang. The Aspirant sat on the trackside of a moving Type-85 Armored Ambulance as it made its way to the front.

Beside the Aspirant was Cadre Volunteer (CV) Kiều Ðăng Khánh, military primus inter pares and de facto captain of an Indochinese volunteer outfit from Vientiane. CV Kiều, a medic who was carefully surveying the ravaged countryside with a pair of binoculars, was spoken-to by the Aspirant.

"Our boys," softly uttered Aspirant Ventura, "...are so green, they've never even held rifles before. Sadly, this is the best the People's Federation can provide us."

The Aspirant pointed at a convoy of black-sleeved frontier infantrymen marching through the streets of a village. The medic pointed his binoculars towards them - noticing the unit's tan skin, brown eyes, young constitution, and nervous composure.

"Mina! Mina!" exclaimed one of the teenagers from the contingent of infantrymen in a Southern Filipino accent, as he ran out of a barn flailing his arms. Several veterans quickly came to the Filipino soldier's aid as he explained how one of his comrades had accidentally stepped on a landmine while inspecting a house. Soldiers from a nearby technical unit unloaded from their jeep to diffuse the explosive.

The Aspirant sighed. Kiều put his hand around Aspirant Ventura's shoulder.

"Enjoy the war while it lasts, Comrade-Aspirant. The peace will be hell," said CV Kiều.

Outskirts of Calang

Morris jumped down from the Black Hawk, saluting to the pilot when he had unboarded. The pilot, wearing the characteristic Black Beret of Mercatusian uniforms and aviator sunglasses, saluted back. The chopper left, and Kyle Morris was on his own. He was wearing his uniform, carrying his combat equipment and clothing in his rucksack. The uniform for this jungle environment was lime-green and army green pixel camo, and Kyle's beret was displaying a blue sigil, showing his rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was heading to the city of Calang to assist PAS forces in eradicating the Aceh Insurgents. He saw the line of tanks and other vehicles with fresh recruits staffing them. "Damn, they really have been stretched thin. These guys look greener than the hippies back home." he remarked to himself. Everyone looked at him with a mix of hopeful and dreadful looks. Kyle spoke in fluent chinese, asking, "Where is the commander of this operation?" They all looked at each other for a moment, and then one pointed over to a tank, where two men stood, one wearing a PAS Aspirant's uniform, the other wearing a volunteer uniform of some kind. Kyle nodded in thanks, walking over to the two men. Shouldering his Dragunov SVDS, he stated, "I heard some assistance was needed over here? Preferably from an experienced soldier, correct? Listen, your men are so green I couldn't distinguish them from the rest of the foliage here, they need someone to lead them into war, and I would be more than happy to help our Pan-Asian allies in that way." The two looked at him with a looks that said, "We do need help." Even under the sunglasses, you could tell Kyle had a look of concern in his eyes.
